Bonjour Service Prevents Sleep Under Vista

Hey all.
I've been having a problem with iTunes (well, Bonjour really - but that came with iTunes, I didn't install it independently). I'm running the iTunes 8.0.0.35 version for Windows.
When the Bonjour service is running, the machine won't sleep according to the settings under the Power Options in Control Panel. I have my machine set to Hybrid Sleep after a bit of time of inactivity, and when the Bonjour service is running, that is magically disabled (the setting's still there, but the system won't sleep).
The only "Windows" setting that relates to this is "Allow computer to sleep" under Multimedia Settings / When Sharing Media in the Advanced Power Options of Control Panel. That's already setup so that it will sleep when using Media Player to share media.
It looks like the Bonjour that comes with iTunes is the ghetto edition - there's no controllers for it that I can find. I can "fix" the problem by simply disabling the "Bounjour Service" under Services - so it's definitely Bonjour that's the problem.
Can someone tell me how I might go about setting iTunes (/ Bonjour) to allow my machine to sleep like I've told it too? This whole Apple-does-my-thinking-for-me stuff is getting a bit tiresome.
Cheers

Unfortunately I do want to use it. I suppose I can just use Media Player to share my library (which is what I'm doing at the moment), but that seems to be a sort of half a job solution
I'm guessing this is an Apple "feature" and won't be resolved anytime soon?

  • Apple TV 3 doesn't start Bonjour services after sleep since firmware upgraded to 6.0.2 (6646.81.1 build)

I have upgraded my AppleTV 3 to firmware 6.0.2 for five weeks but always getting problem in Airplay my ipad2 and wired iMac to Apple TV3. Before that, the Apple TV3 in firmware 5.0 was fantastic in everything. Now, the all-time-sympton of my Apple TV3 waking up from sleep is:
    1) iPad2 in IOS6..1.3 can't find any airplay icon, same as my new iPhone 5s
    2) The wired iMac can't connect to AppleTV3 through Airplay, neither from Maverick's airplay icon nor from iTune's airplay icon.
    3) Further than that, the home sharing from AppleTV3 is found to be disconnected from iTune in iMac
My port-scan towards ApplTV3 at this scenario is found all the Bonjour services are missing, including:
    *  Remote Audio Output  (port 5000)
    *  _airplay (port 7000)
    * _touch-able (port 3689)
    * Sleep Proxy Server  (port 57206)
    * _appletv-v2 (port 3689)
My walk around at the moment is to restart AppleTV3, then all the Bonjour services come back and airplay, home sharing work again. However, this requires me to restart the box everytime I bring up the box from sleep. That means I have to turn on TV... quite fustrated.
I'm wondering if there is any similar problem encounted and any fix.  Well, I can't find any formal description from Apple but their trouble-shooting document keeps saying to "restart Apple TV" as last resort.
    Tks in advance!

I finally found the like-symptom causing the issue of missing airplay services on ATV box.
Well, I have one airport express installed in my study room, which connects to the same LAN as ATV3 in living room. Today, I reset airport express to factory setting and reconfigured everything on AirportExpress, including its SSiD, wifi network key and device password. All of a sudden, my iPad, iPhone, iMac lost their airplay connection to ATV3. Port scanning found no airplay services on ATV3 box. It needed box restart to bring up airplay as my earlier walk around solution. I still performed reset -> restore for a "permanent fix".
That said we might have airplay icon disappeared again if there were more than one airplay device on the same LAN that would interfere to each other. Working on one airplay device from ground start would cause airplay service of another box malfunction.
My experience showed this twice. The first was happened when I put an airport express on the same LAN and I posted a thread here for help. The second was in this morning when i reset airport express to factory setting

  • Bonjour services preventing itunes installing, have tried everything!

Hi there, am now getting to the point of ditching itunes, 2 ipods and an iphone because haven't been able to open itunes or sync anything for the past 2 months since the fateful day that Apple software updated and broke everything!
I have read some threads here and tried uninstalling everything in the correct order. Have even downloaded Windows Install Cleanup so I could get rid of Bonjour as it wouldn't uninstall any other way. When starting from a system with no apple components on it at all, rebooting, disabling firewall, and then trying to install the latest itunes, things seem to be working each time until it gets to 'stopping services', and then after sitting there for several mins not progressing I get a message that Bonjour Service could not be stopped, verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services. Well it is my PC, I am the administrator and am logged in as such. I have already wasted hours of precious time trying to fix this, my patience has run out! On the up side I have saved about £50 that I might have spent over the past 2 months on itunes music since I have been unable to open it
Any help would be much appreciated, failing that pass the message on to Apple why they are losing loyal customers like me who chose an iphone in the first place because at that point the software was good (!!!). Sorry for the rant but I am more than a little annoyed

OK I have done some more reading of random forums and discovered the following post:
"I have the same issue on 2 different Windows 7 machines. The first is Windows 7 Ultimate x64 trying to do an iTunes upgrade. The second is a brand new Windows 7 32-bit Home Premium. I spoke with Apple Support and they are escalating my case to an engineer.
If you don't need bonjour right now you can install iTunes without bonjour:
In Apple Software Update go to tools and choose download only. Then go to tools and choose open update folder. Then rename or delete the bonjour install file. Then run all of the other installs (but not Safari or other you may not want) - if they give you the option to repair just cancel since it is already installed. Do iTunes last. When you do iTunes it will not try to install bonjour since the file is not present. I disconnected from the network so it wouldn't try to download it but I'm not sure if that is necessary. When you run iTunes it will warn you that bonjour is not installed and that you can't connect to an Apple TV, etc. Other than that iTunes will work normally.
Now if they can just fix it..."
I decided to try this as I am not sure that bonjour is something that I need or want. And surprise! ... it actually worked. I have now got a working copy of itunes again (just need to click OK when a message comes up telling me I have bonjour disabled whenever I open it). This was also remarkably easy to do following the above instructions, no need to do thing to registry (yikes!). I didn't even realise that Apple Software Update gave that option to save the files not immediately install them, it isn't very obvious to begin with. I thought I would post this so that anyone else having Bonjour nightmares can try this too.
I am still very annoyed with Apple for wasting my time like this, and really they should be sorting out these issues and releasing a new non-bugged version of itunes so that their customers can focus on enjoying their music, ipods and iphones and not wanting to smash them against their interior decor!

  • Live Cam Voice requires restart after system sleep under Vista

I have attached my Live Cam Voice to my brandnew Vaio Notebook which runs Windows Vista Home Premium and installed the latest drivers from the Creative website. The cam works fine, until I put the laptop to sleep mode and waking it up again. After waking the PC up, the cam is not recognized anymore and I need to restart the computer.
Anybody experienced similar problems and (hopefully) has a solution? Thx.

Did you ever solve this problem? I have a similar problem on my desk top running Vista Home. I couldn't get the Vista driver (download from this wesite) to load so resorted to trying the XP dri've. This seemed to work until Vista put the machine into "Sleep" mode. After coming out of Sleep mode I eith have to restart the computer or disconnect and reconnect the webcam.

  • Bonjour services lost after waking up from sleep

My MacBook Air can initially see all the Bonjour Services from my NAS, Printer and PC in my local network.
When my IBook becomes awake after it was in sleep mode all the available Bonjour Services are not visible anymore.
My Wifi and internet are still working, but when I turns Wifi off and on, the services are visible again.
By the way my iPad doesn't have this kind of problems, Bonjour stays always visisble here.
What can I do to keep the Bonjour Services visible on my MacBook Air.

The previous solution only worked for a few days.
I have another fix from Apple that is working (for now):
Go to the network preference pane and create a new location by using the location pull-down menu. Call it whatever you want.
Select the new location. Choose the little tool icon dropdown under the left column of services and choose "set service order" Drag things around so that airport comes first and then ethernet. Save, apply, do what you need to do to save all of these settings. Restart the computer.
There might have been some other steps, but these are the main and most important parts.
The default configuration for service order is wrong and the computer gets hung looking around for a bluetooth or firewire network connection. After every major system update, check that the service order is set right--it could get overwritten.

  • Cannot install itunes 7.7 with Vista due to bonjour service issues

(I do have itunes version 7.6.2.9 working fine with no issues on vista)Cannot install itunes 7.7 becoz vista doesnt let bonjour service to run, While trying to start the Bonjour service from the Windows Services console gives an other error: "Windows could not start the Bonjour service on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code -65549." Is there any way I can get Bonjour to install and run as a service? tried switching off windows defender and Norton Internet security along with norton firewall too, still it doesnt let me install ,even tried downloading the windows version of bonjour but it too doesnt get installed as the service cannot start

Apple offer this advice which I guess is not much help to you as you have Norton:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1609?viewlocale=en_US
I wonder if it is worth looking in the your firewall configuration>>Programs and deleting any entry for Bonjour - in the hope that you will be prompted to allow it or not when you do the install, or maybe adding it back with permit all.
But someone came up with another possible solution at the end of this thread:

  • How to enable Bonjour Services to get iTunes videos to play?

I have been having trouble downloading videos from MIT OCW which , before ,I could download to iTunes or Real . Before, I was using IE9 and more recently Firefox for this purpose .
I began experiencing problems downloading these videos in iTunes so I uninstalled it , then had problems trying to install it (I have Vista 64-bit Home Premium) , the system would'nt download it until I tried it under Google Chrome , and it did install iTunes......
But the problems persisted when trying to download individual videos from a given course . I went through Mozilla and found out it needed an important update (downloaded on Jan. 1,2012)
and I also installed the free trial app TuneUp Utilities , which seems to have done well all of its functions . In its second module , it gave me the choice of disabling several programs to reduce the load....one of them was "Bonjour services" (or close),
and later , i found out it is needed to share iTunes files, etc. Another disabled file was a complement to QuickTime....I suspect5 that is why the video files will not open under Mozilla or IE . I have yet to try Google Chrome .

There is a free browser called Dolphin and it plays m.youtube site just fine and it's free at the IStore, safari is just getting left behind right now it seems ...

As you can see, there are many problems here. Quicktime is apprently unavailable, when it's installed. iTunes doesn't recognize me as an administrator, when the account is indeed an admin (and can perform administrative actions).
Connection to the iTunes store is unsuccessful, when iTunes is enabled in the windows firewall. All the services iTunes needs to run, are running successfully. The sole exception being Bonjour, which iTunes doesn't seem to realize is running. I've verified the service to be running, and have restarted it. Additionally, mDNSresponder.exe is not running under task manager. Manually starting it from Bonjour's file directory doesn't work, either. I've changed my "hosts" file, and still no luck. I've also changed a couple of Internet Explorer internet properties, and the unsuccessful connectivity doesn't change. I've reinstalled the whole line of Apple software, without a change in results. Reboots are just as unsuccessful.
Ultimately, my problem is neither iTunes nor Windows recognizes my iPod Touch, whereas my old Nano used to work fine. On other computers, iTunes is fine. The problem is on this one, and whether it's an Apple or Windows problem, I don't know. Hopefully someone here can help me out, as I would be immensely appreciative.

    One step forward?
I'd like to doublecheck something you mentioned earlier:
I've verified the service to be running, and have restarted it. Additionally, mDNSresponder.exe is not running under task manager.
When you were in the processes tab, did you have "Show processes from all users" checked, as per the following screenshot? (mDNSresponder.exe runs under SYSTEM, so you don't see it in there unless that box is checked.)

  • Duplicate files appearing in Windows Photo Gallery under Vista Home Basic.

I am suffering a bout of duplications in my Windows Photo Gallery under Vista. I am getting duplicates, triplicates and quadruple versions of the original file.
Despite turning off all Autoplay media types to 'No Action', I get random duplicates when I try to enter update pictures from camera or memory chip through a USB port. There is no 'Enter Updates Only' option, and Microsoft says that this is unnecessary as
duplication is prevented. The duplicates however appear with 'copy' in the file name after the image numbering system. My preference is to view the memory contents via 'Computer' - select and open the port, and view, then copy and paste into Photo
Gallery.  Photo Gallery kicks in to view the chip correctly, but often/always (?) promptly uploads uncommanded. It did not used to do this, only in the last year or two.
What do I do, it is driving me crazy ?

    Hi,
As I know, for Duplicate issue, it might be caused by a corrupted database, please try to rebuild it as a test.
    Close Windows Photo Gallery
First show hidden files.Navigate to C:\Users\Usename\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Photo GalleryRename “Pictures.pd” to “Pictures.pd.old” (without quotes) and reopen Windows Photo Gallery.

If I am remembering correctly, some changes were necessary in order to make this work with 10.1.2.3. So, if you are using the old jar which you used in previous versions, I would recommend obtaining the one specifically updated for 10.1.2.3. Refer back to the OTN page which has the download and choose the link that references the new version:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/forms/techlisting10gR2.html
Be sure to clear the client Jar cache before re-testing. This is not the same as the browser cache.

  • Bonjour service disabled after latest update

I just updated my iTunes to the latest version and a message came up stating: Warning! The Bonjour Service has been disabled. Bonjour is required for sharing music with others, playing music through AirPlay speakers, connecting to Apple TV...."  then it says to re-enable the service but I cannot find where to do that.  I've gone into the control panel and cannot find it anywhere....
If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it...thanks!

Interestingly enough this is only happening on my new Sony Vaio laptop VPCEB45FX with Win 7!  I have the same setup on my Dell Inspiron and my iPhone sync's properly.  On the Sony it simply can't find it.  I have completely uninstalled all Apple software (Quicktime, AutoUpdate, iTunes, Bonjour, etc) 5 times now and done fresh re-installs.  I disabled my AVG Free Edition anti-virus 2012, same result.  I have run all diagnostics from Apple and it says no device is connected, yet Win 7 acknowledges it immediately when plugged in.
Also on iTunes under Preferences, Devices, it shows "Bonjour is disabled" but under Windows services it shows it is running and set to the "automatic" mode as recommended in the Apple dicussions.  I tried turning off Windows firewall, but still have the same result.  I can unplug the iPhone and plug it into my Dell and it immediately syncs with identical software!
I am stumped!  Thanks for all you suggestions!

  • Bonjour Service Will Not Start - Error Code 87

I'm unable to start the Bonjour service as I get an error code 87 when starting it. I've followed the apple support recommendation of uninstalling all itunes components and reinstalling but I still get the same issue
Can anybody help with this please?

    Thanks.
I turned up this thread while researching:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2406705
So I'd try the two positive suggestions from there.
First try disabling the BonJour Service prior to attempting the iTunes install (I've seen that trick work sometimes with more-standard sorts of BonJour 1920/1921s).
If still no joy, perhaps check for any signs of Winsock corruption as described in the following Microsoft document:
[How to determine and to recover from Winsock2 corruption in Windows Server 2003, in Windows XP, and in Windows Vista|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259]
Any luck with either of those two measures?

  • Bonjour service fails to start

when trying to download itunes I keep getting this message " service"bonjour service"(bonjour service) failed to start. verify you have sufficient service to start system services"
Please help me with this...I am not a novice but certainly not an expert. I just bought the new ipod touch for a mothers day present and cannot get itunes to load on my computer. I tried to download under another administrators account with same result..help

+when trying to download itunes I keep getting this message " service"bonjour service"(bonjour service) failed to start. verify you have sufficient service to start system services"+
Do you have a McAfee firewall on that PC?
If so, try the following document:
"Bonjour service failed to start, verify you have sufficient privileges" error message when installing

  • Bonjour Services could not be stopped

I've had it with the stupid bonjour services. I have searched for countless hours for a solution, and even emailed the head-honchos. But it was "out of their field." A message pops up during installation, and says, "Service 'Bonjour service' (Bonjour Service) could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficent priviledges to stop system services." Can someone help me???

That can sometimes happen if the BonJour service is jammed in an odd state. Let's check on that.
In your Start menu, right-click "Computer" and select "Manage".
    Expand "Services & Applications".
    Open "Services".
Maximise the window to better see what is going on.
What is showing up for you next to the BonJour Service under Status and Startup Type? For example, mine says "Started" and "Automatic".

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep automatically - no process preventing sleep according to pmset. What's going on?

i noticed the following problem with my MBP 8,1 running 10.7.2 — automatic sleep just doesn’t happen. Since I usually put my Macbook to sleep manually before leaving the desk etc. I just noticed this issue and can’t really pinpoint it to specific updates.
Closing the lid works, selecting “sleep” from the Apple menu works. The only way to put my MBP to sleep automatically is currently PleaseSleep, which works fine.
