Bonjour Sharing Problem - OSX 10.6 / 10.7

Have a very unusual project using Bonjour sharing. I was hoping installing Lion on all three macs today would resolve the problem, but having done that it still exists.
The basic set up is this....
iMac: Ethernet Connection
Macbook Air: Wireless
Macbook Pro: Wireless
Both the laptops are connected to the wireless network correctly, internet, etc, all works fine. All the dhcp details etc are automatic, and I have checked and the correct subnet mask, default gateway etc are all there.
The iMac has a USB printer connected to it, and has printer sharing and file sharing enabled. Printer sharing works correctly with the macbook air, no problems at all. File sharing also works with the macbook air (although it does occasionally drop out).
The Macbook Pro however refuses to see the iMac shares at all. I'm unable to browse files or find the printer when I try to add it.
I really don't understand why this is the case, it's driving me a little crazy! I am able to ping the iMac both using it's computer name and also it's network ip address from both laptops.
Any help gratefully received!

  • Bonjour Printing Problem

My family has multiple laptops. Since 10.5.6 one of the MacBook Pros will not connect to the bonjour shared MP830 printer (one will), and one of the MacBooks will not connect and one will. The error message the other two get is "An error occurred while trying to add the selected printer. Error:-9672"
The printer shows up if one goes to add a printer but after clicking on Add the error message above appears. Tried deleting all print queues and printers and add the printer but no luck. It will connect directly via USB to the two machines but will not work via bonjour.
Also turned off Firewall and tried but that did not work either.
Any ideas? What am I missing?

I am also having this exact problem. I can connect to my HP 1350 just fine directly with through USB. When it comes to printing through airport... it's the same deal: The printer setup utility shows the printer, I push "add" and I get the error message "An error occurred while trying to add the selected printer. Error:—9672"
I tried repairing disk utility. I restarted my computer. I'm at a loss now. I really want to be able to print wirelessly. I used to be able to. I downloaded the newest software for my printer last week. I'm not certain if that was the cause, and I'm not sure whether I had used it without error since then or not.
Please help me anyway you can.

  • How to you "publish" Bonjour Shared printers using Workgroup Manager?

    Dear Friends,
Hello. We have just spend considerable time setting up Mac OS X 10.6.4 server to host some printers to our Mac clients (previously we had used a Windows print server but it was too slow and inflexible). We have the printers we need set-up and shared out as Bonjour Shared printers because that sends out all of the duplex setting we need. I have tried to "publish" these using Workgroup Manager and they do not show up on the list. How do you "publish" these printers using WGM? NOT: We can't just let people select "nearby" printers because we want to set a default and use kerberos security.

    Eric T Gadsby wrote:
    Anthony,
Thank you for you help. The procedure you outline is what we have attempted to do. We add the Bonjour-shared printers to a client and then open Work Group Manager on the same computer but when you go to the "Printing" pane of "Preferences" the printers do not show under "Available Printers", neither do USB printers.
Hope this clarifies our problem. We would like to use Work Group Manager as advertised but it doesn't seem to be working for us.
    Welcome to my world…
This 'bug' has existed for several major versions of Mac OS X Server (10.6, 10.5, and maybe 10.4). I did report it more than once to Apple as an official bug but they don't seem to 'get it' despite my best efforts.
    You can do the following
Add a printer directly to a computer running WGM,
Then use WGM to 'push' the printer out to clients,
The model of the printer will then also be pushed out to clients so they automatically select the correct driver but not the correct paper tray/duplex/etc. settings.
    You can do the following
Add a Mac OS X Printer Server queue to the computer running WGM (which must not be the same computer acting as the Mac OS X Printer Server) if you do this via the Bonjour advertisement of the queue then it will not get the model, or any settings from the print server.
You can then push this queue out to clients via WGM
    You cannot do the following
Add a Mac OS X Printer Server queue to the computer running WGM (which must not be the same computer acting as the Mac OS X Printer Server) if you do this via IPP, then the WGM machine will get the model automatically, but not any paper tray/duplex settings.
However this queue cannot then be seen in WGM and therefore cannot be pushed out to clients.
Apparently doing custom XML, would allow also pushing out printer settings, but this is so far from 'the Macintosh Way' that only a masochist would do it.
This area is one of the few where the Mac is significantly worse than Windows, it is an area that Microsoft (mostly) sorted literally decades ago. Not only in the Windows world can you push the printer model, and the printer settings, but you can even if needed push the entire printer driver out to the (Windows) clients.

  • Add password to Internet Sharing in OSX Lion

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to read this discussion thread.
The thread concerns Internet Sharing in OSX Lion.
Prior to Lion, you were able to add a password, so that for example, if you are sharing the Internet from your Mac to the Ipad, a dialog box would be displayed on your Ipad where you could input the your password. This made both the Internet connection between your Mac and the Ipad secure.
Is there a way to do this in OSX Lion?
I realise that there is a password dialog under the Wi-fi option, but this asks for ASCII and HEX password. I have tried to input my previous password in the dialog, but it will not accept it.
    Thank you for your time

I had the same problem, and I think I have fixed it.  What was happening for me was everything was running just fine until I had to restart my Mac for whatever reason and then my iPad and iPhone both stopped being able to connect to the Internet although they were connected to the shared network I had created.
To get it working again all I had to do was go into General settings on the iThings and go to reset and select 'Reset Network Settings' (The downside of this, of course, is that it will forget all your other passwords.) and then I was able to reconnect.
I also discovered in the Keychain Access on the Mac that there were several versions of the Internet Sharing password stored in there from when I had messed about changing the network name and such like, so I deleted all of those and set a new password for the network.
Hope this is of some use to you.

  • Wireless/airdrop/file sharing problems

    Wireless/airdrop/file sharing problems
I operate an IMac 3.06GHz and an Airbook 1.4 GHz
I frequently need to transfer files between the two, and in OSX 10.6, did so by setting the iMac to share the wireless connection and using drop box
This no longer functions in Lion (1.7.1).
    Symptoms are:
    1. Air drop simply does not function. Neither computer recognizes the other, even if they are adjacent.
    2. The Airbook will recognize the wireless connection, and is able to connect with some programs, but not all.
    3. For example, Safari is able to load news sites, but not gmail and a google search freezes, although a Bing search for the succeeds.
    4. Turning both Firewalls off has no effect
    5. Restarting both computers with new settings has no effect
    6. Neither machine shows in the sidebar of finder, therefore I am unable to access one from the other directly.
Any ideas or back to Snow Leopard?

Home Sharing is designed to work on your local network not across the internet/cloud.
Stuff is accessed under the Computers column where your local iTunes library on a local computer would appear.
Home Sharing would share your iTunes content (i.e. stuff stored in itunes on the computer, not in the cloud) with AppleTV or an iPad etc on the SAME network.
AppleTV2 will not be able to see itunes content on the work computer over the internet.  It's not designed to.  if the work computer was on the home network it would.
iCloud is in it's infancy and is not a mature product - iTunes TV Show purchases appear on AppleTV, but currently music does not unless you are subscribed to iTunes Match. I find this rather odd to be honest, along with the inability to buy music on AppleTV2.  Movies purchased in iTunes are not authorised for iCloud viewing currently either.
Maybe it has something to do with iTunes Match 'getting in the way' - i think they assume you'll use that whereas you really want to be able to access Purchased music from the cloud without subscribing to itunes Match which is overkill for some.

  • Airport Internet Sharing Problem  Mini - PC Laptop

    Airport Internet Sharing Problem
    My setup is:
Cable Modem -> Mac Mini --> PC Laptop
... with the connection between the mac mini and the PC laptop being the built-in mac mini airport using internet sharing.
Hi, I've been trying to set up Airport internet sharing with the mini, to no avail. It works off & on, but invariably the internet connections drop after about 10 minutes. The only way to get it started again, is to go into internet sharing, turn off internet sharing, then turn it on again. It will work for another 10 minutes or so (slow) after gong back to the PC laptop and reconnecting, then it chokes again.
I've tried the connection both with & without WEP, same behavior. I read somewhere that OS X only plays well with using Channel 1, so I tried that. No luck. Tried with and without Interference Robustness, no luck.
Tried with WEP on and using 40 bit hex keys using a "$" prepend in the mac as suggested on this web page:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20030803030354585
Same behavior, works for 10 minutes, then it chokes again.
Tried with & without the firewall.
Yes, personal web sharing is on.
The PC laptop works fine with any number of other wireless routers out & about town, at my girlfriend's house, so forth.
Any chance I have a bum mac mini wireless card or antennae or something? The reception strength on the PC laptop is good.
Just don't know what to make of it. So stupid, it seems like something pretty basic that ought to work.
Yeah yeah tell me to get a wireless router, but I'm not going to do that, that's one major reason I bought the mini in the first place and it would be nice if it worked as advertised.
    Any other suggestions?

    Works better now...
this is me again. A week ago or so, I noticed there was an automatic update to the wireless on the mac mini.
Since then the performance is much improved. My PC laptop connection to the mac mini no longer drops spontaneously.
Much improved! Thank you very much!
Yes, on occasion, when I leave and then come back to use the wireless, the laptop will not reconnect after multiple attempts; I have to turn of internet sharing and flick it back on again, but then it works all evening fore hours and hours straight with no problems.
    Thanks Apple! It's usable now!

  • File sharing problems and horror story (nearly)

I use Leopard on a MacBook Pro, a MacBook and a iMac G4 800 MHz (unsupported model).
I have on the iMac and the MacBook Pro many users (the same ont he two machines) and I always use Fast User Switching.
I have had very few problems with Leopard until now; I like it even if there are some glitches or some new features which are not my cup of tea (hierarchical menus missing from the dock, stacks useless when there are many items, FireWall impossibilities (?) to open specific ports, Back to my Mac working on a Lan but not from outside until now, problems with a few apps (Parallels networking erratic), ...
    Now about File Sharing.
Let say my main account is user1 (Administrator), and I have another user2 also administrator, plus user3, user4 standard users.
On the iMac I activate File Sharing.
On the MacBookPro, as user1, if I connect to the iMac Server (using afp://IPaddress_of_theiMac/) I do NOT get the dialog
"Enter your user name and password to access file server YYY
Connect to server as Guest or as Registered User"
but I directly get the dialog
"Select the volumes you want to mount on YYY"
From this, if I select user1 it mounts with full read/write permissions which is normal. It appears that I am connected with my Apple account user1&mac.com (same as mentionned in the Account panel of System Preferences).
On the other hand, if I try to connect to the user2 account, I only get limited access although in the File Sharing Preferences, user1/iMac is mentionned with full Read/Write preferences for the Home Folder of user2.
What is very surprising is that if I log on the MacBook Pro as user2, or user 3 or user4, then connect to the iMac, I first get the dialog to enter a user name and a password. This gives me access with the correct full permissions on user1/iMac or user2/iMac using the corresponding user name/password pair; this is the usual behaviour which is missing when trying to connect from user1/MacBook Pro.
    Now for the Horror Story!
Trying to understand what was going on with the permissions of the user2/iMac account, I logged in to the iMac as user1, went to the Users folder and from there had a look on the informations about user2 home folder. In the lower part of the pannel, Sharing & Permissions says "You have no access" (which is normal) and this is followed by a table where users and permissions are listed. It seems user1 has Read and Write access in contradiction with the preceding phrase...
Anyway, I tried to modify these authorizations for user2 by clicking on the lock of the Information pannel and entering name and password of the administrator. Didn't go farther than that. By mistake, I hit Command-Delete and user2 was GONE from the list AND NOT ONLY from the list in the Information window! Using Fast User Switching and going to user2, nothing left on the Desktop and NO Home anymore.
In the System Preferences/Accounts panel, user2 was still mentionned.
In the Users folder, no user2 folder anymore.
Using once again Fast User Switching, I logged as user2 and got by magic an all new Home. Nothing left in Documents, Library or other user1 folders. Standard settings for icons, dock, etc.
My first move has been to use a very recent backup to restore everything (Thank you Mike Bombich from Copy Cloner!).
Once everything was back to normal, I had a look at the Trash from user1 and guess what, the Home folder of user2 was there, complete.
So now I am left with two questions
why is it I do not have the same dialogs when connecting from all the accounts although as far as I can see, configurations are the same?
why is it possible, from an Information pannel to delete the account of another user?
    Thank you all for comments!

  • 10.8 Server file sharing problem

We have a new Mac mini with 10.8 and OS X Server app. The mini has direct attached storage and will be used mainly for File Sharing. There is a repeatable problem/bug with case sensitive folder names and file sharing. For example a folder named "Editorial" is inacessible via "Connect to Server" from a client on the LAN. The same folder with the same permissions, same everthing, except it is named "editorial" works perfectly. Change the uppercase E to a lowercase e and it works. The drive is formatted with normal HFS+. It is Not HFS+ case-sensitive. I have Xserves running 10.4, 10.5, and 10.6 for file sharing and none have this problem.
Has anyone else experieced this? Is there a fix? Other than making everything lowercase.

    Simon Slavin United Kingdom
If you have a problem please start a thread of your own.  Don't get us confused between solving two different problems.
    Simon,
The subject of this thread is dealing with:
    "Server 10.8 file sharing problem"
Specifically for direct attached storage file sharing permissions issue.
Client computers having issues with folder permissions
These are exactly my issues as well. I was hoping to try a solution here or maybe proffer a solution if found elsewhere.  I did not realize each problem should be opened as a separate discussion....

  • File sharing problems with my Media Player, an A C Ryan

I have a media player, an A C Ryan, hooked up to my wifi at home and it normally accesses all my hard disks that is plugged and shared on my iMac. I had no problems when the iMac was on Snow Leopard. Under Network/Workgroup in the AC Ryan's menu, I can see and access all the files on the hard disks.
The moment I upgraded to Lion, all such access was lost. The AC Ryan cannot connect to the hard disks any more via the wifi network. it's as though file sharing has stopped completely. I checked the file sharing settings on the iMac and nothing has changed i.e. the disks were shared as usual. After struggling with many possible solutions and failing (I checked out a lot of forums), I reintalled Snow Leopard and the problems were immediately solved.
Is there something seriously wrong with Lion's file-sharing? Has this been fixed in 10.7.2? My friend who has a similar setup (his media player is the WD Live) has exactly the same file sharing problem with Lion.
I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

I believe that NTFS-3G has issues with Lion.
I use Paragon NTFS and have had no issues at all. I am pretty sure that NTFS-3G will get updated, but you need to check their site to find out when.

  • Strange isolated playlist sharing problem

Okay, here's a strange library sharing problem to solve.
First, some basic info on my home network:
Computer #1: PC running Windows XP. Wired network connection.
Computer #2: PC running Windows XP. Wireless network connection.
Computer #3: iMac running OS X. Wireless network connection.
All computers are running the most recent version of iTunes and have previously been able to share iTunes libraries without any issues. Library sharing is turned on on all computers, as is the "look for shared libraries" setting.
    Here's the problem:
When I first open iTunes on computer #2 I see the shared libraries from both of the other computers. However, about ten seconds later (or if I click on the library listing) the library from computer #1 disappears.
What's strange is that I can still access the library on computer #3 just fine from computer #2. Conversely, when I'm on either computer #1 or #3 I can view and listen to the libraries from either of the other two computers with no problems.
Bottom line, I can't access computer #1's library from computer #2 - though I can see its listing briefly when I first run iTunes on computer #2. It would seem to make more sense if I couldn't see the library listing at all, or if I couldn't access the library from the third computer. However, this isolated and somewhat intermittent inability to access computer #1's library from computer #3 seems strange - particularly given that I can access computer #3's library from computer #1.
    Isn't technology grand???
Thanks in advance for your help!
      Windows XP

Syncing the normal playlist was just to make sure your iPod had all the correct songs on it. My thought was that if the smart playlist rules were being synced rather than the music itself, then the smart playlist would populate correctly when it had access to the correct songs.
Since that doesn't seem to be the case, I guess Chris CA is right and you will just have to wait for Apple to release an iTunes update that fixes this bug.
Until then, I've given you a relatively easy work-around, so hopefully that can tide you over.
    Cheers.

  • Command to Start/Stop "Windows File Sharing" on OsX Tiger Client

    Dear Mac Gurus:
How to use command to start/stop “Windows File Sharing” on OSX Tiger client?
    Thanks!
    Max

    Hi Max,
Windows file sharing requires two daemons, nmbd and smbd. They can be started/stopped as follows:
To start (type the following all in a single line):
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/nmbd.plist /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/smbd.plist
    To stop:
    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/nmbd.plist /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/smbd.plist
The option "-w" indicates that the default setting (whether start them at boot time or not) is also modified (the same effect as you turn them on/off via System Preferences -> Sharing). This means, if you start them and shutdown your Mac without stopping them, then they will be automatically restarted next time you reboot the Mac.
If you use "load -F" instead of "laod -w", then they are started but the default setting is not modified (if it is off then remains off).
If you use "unload" instead of "unload -w", then they are stopped the default setting is not modified (if it is on then remains on and will be started at next reboot).
If you feel the commands are too long to type, then you can devide them into two commands, for example:
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/nmbd.plist
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/smbd.plist
See launchctl man page for more detail.

  • Bonjour causing problems with Windows 7

    Hi -
I installed iTunes 102.2.14, 64-bit version on my HP dm1 laptop.
While iTunes runs fine I have been having some issues that are only resolved by disabling Bonjour so I wanted to post as a PSA.
I found that my iTunes movie downloads were incredibly slow - no movie could be downloaded in under 5 hours.  I also found that my laptop would hang if I tried to download more than one movie at a time.
After a reboot in Safe Mode with Network, I was able to download my remaining movies very quickly and my laptop stopped hanging.  I've seen a couple of other threads about Bonjour being problematic on Windows 7, so I rebooted and disabled Bonjour.
Presto - no Bonjour, no problem.  My next movie downloaded in under 20 minutes.  No more Windows hanging.
    hth,
    AliKelSea

I perform computer support for a number of people and recently ran into this EXACT same problem.
Dell desktop with Windows XP 32 bit SP3. iTunes has been on this machine for over 3 years and has been update regularly.
Everything was fine until iTunes version 10.2.2. was installed, then iTunes would hang and not start causing a windows crash report to be generated.
I uninstalled iTunes, scrubbed the registry, rebooted the machine reinstalled the current version of iTunes, same problem.
I uninstalled iTunes again, scrubbed the registry, rebooted the machine reinstalled a prior version of iTunes, same problem.
I uninstalled iTunes, Boujour, Mobile Me, Apple Mobile Device Support, Quicktime, rebooted the machine, reinstalled a prior version of iTunes again, same problem.
Finally killed the process mDNSResponder.exe in the Task Manager. iTunes opened up no problem.
Went into Services.msc and disabled Bonjour so it does not start. Problem solved for now.
I have only run into this problem on this one computer, I believe that there may be a conflict with some other program installed and running on this machine.
Hope this info helps others as well.

  • Bonjour shared printer keeps removing itself from printer list

I print thru my imac G5 Tiger to a "Bonjour Shared" Smasung printer. I add the printer, load drivers, lock the preferences. Next day I have to search for the the printer again and reload again (searching) for drivers. Any way to keep this in my printer list so it does not have to search for drivers every time??
    Thanks!

Known issue I guess- just keep doing the setup for now.....
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307012
    Issue or symptom
If you add a printer that is being shared by another Mac (it is displayed as "Kind: Bonjour Shared" in the Add Printer dialog window) to your printer list, then put your Mac to sleep, the printer may be removed from the printer list. The shared printer may not be removed during display sleep, only during system sleep (when your Mac's sleep light is pulsating).
    Products affected
    Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
    Solution
After waking your computer from sleep, add the printer again in the Print & Fax pane of System Preferences, or by choosing Add Printer... from the Printer pop-up menu in the Print dialog.
