Boo Hoo - lost my iPhone 4S
Hi all,
I foolishly lefrt my phone in a 'hostile' environment yesterday and someone nabbed it.
Reality appears to be that my carrier (Telus) nor Apple has much reason to care one way or the other.
After all, a lost phone is more business for both of them!
Can anyone prove me wrong here? Are phones blacklisted by Apple, or is that not Apple's 'job'?
In Canada I understand the CRTC may be working on legislation to force carriers to comply.
Think of the criminal code when it comes to automobiles, then think that your average smartphone is worth more than some cars.

Apple is not a law enforcement agency. Apple does not have the legal right to disable a phone just based on your say-so. I'm sure that if they were presented with a court order to prevent it from activating, they could and they would.
The carrier is the only one who would have the power to blacklist the phone, and that blacklist may not be effective if the phone was unlocked or were to be hacked and used on another network.
Since the cheapest new car you can buy these days in any civilized country starts at about $10,000.00, it's hardly fair to compare the two, especially when cars are titled and have to be registered with the government and phones are not.

You can find the backup files and then copy them to a safe place if you are worrying about this.
iTunes places the backup files in these places:
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
The "~" represents your Home folder. If you don't see Library in your Home folder, hold Option and click the Go menu.
Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

iCloud is only available in Lion, 10.7. You will have to upgrade to Lion in order to get into iCloud. If you transfered a .mac or .me address to iCloud through mobile me, or you have another device iCloud enabled, then you can log into the iCloud.com website.

I recently thought I lost my iPhone and I erased it but now that I found it. I cannot get the this iPhone message is lost please call ********* I am out of the country my laptop is at home. If you removed the device from your iCloud account rather than using the "Stop Lost Mode" option, then you will most certainly need to restore the iPhone, and that will require a computer running iTunes.

As I mentionned in my question, I have lost my iPhone I'm feeling very dumb, it is the second time that this happens to me and I really need your help! I don't even know what happened, but when I arrived home after school, I didn't find my phone. The fact is that I was sure to have take it with me, but I haven't, as I see. I went on the apple site: "location of my iPhone" and they told me that my cellphone was out of service. Now, I really don't know what to do and what to think. I serched everywhere, in my car, everywhere in my house, I even went outside to check, but i live in Quebec and it is snowing a lot this winter, so maybe I just didn't see it... Anyways, I'm really scared cause I have 3G on my phone and now they say that I'm not connected to 3G anymore, neither any other internet service. I'm freaking right now. Does that mean that my cellphone is broke, stuck in the snow, or just somewhere that I'm never gonna find out? I'm imagining all the worst possibilities so if you don't want me to die soon, please, help me (try to reassure me if it is possible but if is not, tell me the truth anyways).

Voicemail is left at your carrier's server. That will continue to work unless you report your iPhone as lost or stolen with your carrier.
You may never find it again and you can't if the iPhone remains offline or out of service which means the iPhone is powered off or doesn't have cellular reception. -

No, you should not. There are problems trying to go the other way, but updating a newer iOS release from a backup of an older iOS release has always been supported and is the basic means of setting up a new device from a previous one.

If Find My iPhone doesn't show a location for the iPhone, then unless your carrier offers some sort of tracking service, there will be no way to locate the phone other than to just look for it. Notify the police in case someone turns it in and change passwords to your Apple ID and any other online services you used from your iPhone.

I've lost my iPhone and have not got the finances to buy a new one, investigating insurance options but only 6 months left on contract so may not bother, however I want to get all my info off iCloud but can't work out how to get it, I'm not very computer savvy to be honest.
You can only restore the backup to another iOS device. Also, Apple will delete an iCloud backup after 180 days of inactivity so it won't be there forever.
