Book feature. Page count starts off by 1

I have a book, and my first section has 12 pages. The 2nd section however says it starts on 14. Where did 13 go? The way my book is setup, all section must start on the odd page (right page). I've done every kind of syncing, and all pages have auto page numbering on. I can't figure this one out at all. The documents are not in spreads, they are just a single strip of pages (1-50 per section).
any ideas?

Uh, I think I solved it. I had the Book to start all section on even pages. I switched it to Odd, and all is well. Sorry.

    I'm creating a book format in Pages. I want the page count to be 1 on the first page of chapter one after the title page, table of contents, etc.. How do I do that?

    That is not the issue.
    Pages/OSX does not save files with crop marks and bleeds.
    It also by default saves transparency, which is involved in a lot of Pages' better features, at a rubbishy 72 dpi resolution.
    It also makes it extremely difficult to maintain mono-color like black only text, has no spot color and makes color management opaque.
    It really is only meant for amateur publishing and printing to your desktop printer.
    A commercial printer who is willing to use and print from Pages may have better results but at the cost of considerable micro-management which defeats the point of this "cheap" solution.

  • BOOK: Generate ALWAYS makes page count even

    Hi everyone,
    Using FM8.0.4 on Win XP Pro SP3.
    I create a set of documents. In each document, I set the pagination to "Delete Empty Pages". I put all the documents into a book. In the book file, I set the pagination property for each document to "Delete Empty Pages". I check each of these settings.
    I generate the book/TOC. EVERY document in the book now has an extra page on the end (an even-page-count page), and every document's individual setting is reset to "Make page count even".
    I have repeated this process at least a dozen times, reconstituted the entire book and the TOC repeatedly, faced east and prayed, etc. There must be a setting somewhere that I just haven't found yet.
    Help, please. :):)
    Thank you kindly,
    Elchanan

    You need to check the "Start On" pagination setting of the component file in the book _after_ the one you're working on. If the following component file is set to open on a Right page, a blank page is added at the end of the preceding file to make it happen.
    Remember that you need to set the pagination for all the files in the book file -- settings there trump the individual files' settings.

  • How to start the page count from second page (first is title)

    Hi all,
    I have been using Livecycle for a little while now and think I have got to grips with quite a bit of it to make some fairly simple interactive forms, but I have started to make more complex forms now and although I am able to work a lot of things out, one thing has stumped me. There are lots of threads about page numbering, but none seem to address my problem: I wish to have a 'page number' on the master page (done that) but I have 2 master pages, one is used for the first page (then not at all) and the second master page is used after that, that is the one with the page count on, that way the page number appears at the bottom on every page, apart from the first one. I need a way for the count to 'skip' the first page (as this is a title page and I do not want that numbered) and start numbering from page two of the form, but have it numbered as page 1.
    So basically the document will be Title page (no numbering), then pages after that of the form, starting from '1' shown on the bottom- it is a dynamic form that may change length as the user adds to it. Is there a script that I need to use, and if so how should I implement it? Any help would be appreciated, apologies if this is not very clear!

    Use the Custom object "Master Page n of m" on the second master page.

  • I am creating a book and had 27 pages done manually off of an album, am trying to add 7 more pages and cannot add more pages

    I am creating a book and had 27 pages done manually off of an album , I wanted to add more pages but when I try to add a page nothing happens.

    Select the book in the left hand sourcd pane and type Command +D (duplicate).  Then do as Keith suggested to turn it into two separate books, i.e one with  1-50 pages and one with 1-57 to get all of the pages included in two about equal books.
    The will have to be ordered separately with separate shipping charges.

  • How can I get a total page count of a PDF before placing every page in the PDF?

    Before the [long] spiel, I'm using javascript in InDesign CS3.
    I'd like to create a script that places a multiPage PDF in any number of different impositions. (saddle stitch, 4up signatures, 16up signatures etc.)
    I've easily created a script that iterates through a PDF and places it into a new document as (4,1|2,3), (8,5|6,7) etc, which works for printing in duplex, folding each page in half, and gluing the resulting spines to make a simple thick book (for PDFs with more than, say, 64 pages).
    However, the next step is to re-write the script to create a saddle stitch document (16,1|2,15), (14,3|4,13) ... (10,7|8,9). For this I need to know how many pages there are in the PDF before I start placing the PDF pages, and then making the new document [int((PDFpages+3)/4)] pages long.
    Is there a simple way to get the count of PDFpages without going through a loop and placing the next page from the PDF until the placed page number equals the first page number?
    This way seems wasteful:
    var totPDFPages = 1;
    app.pdfPlacePreferences.pageNumber = totPDFPages;
    myPDFPage = sheetFront.place(File(srcPDF), [0,0])[0];
    var pdfFirstPage = myPDFPage.pdfAttributes.pageNumber;
    while (doneCounting == false) {
    totPDFPages += 1;app.pdfPlacePreferences.pageNumber = totPDFPages;
    myPDFPage = sheetFront.place(File(srcPDF), [0,0])[0];
    if (myPDFPage.pdfAttributes.pageNumber == pdfFirstPage) {
    totPDFPages -=1;
    doneCounting = true;
    alert("PDF has " + totPDFPages + " pages!");exit();
    myPDFPage.remove();
    NB. Javascript above *hasn't* been run, but should look similar once debugged.
    The only thing I've though of to relieve the sheer duplication of placing the PDF twice (once for the count, and once for the imposition), is to create an array of impoPages[counter]=myPDFPage, and then shuffle the pages referenced by the array to the correct sheet and position.
    It'd be much easier to be able to assign pageCount = File(srcPDF).pageCount !!!
    Thanks for any help/tips or even a simple "What are you smoking, man!?"
    Cheers,
    Jezz

  • Getting Page Count for a Multi-Page PDF file using Illustrator script?

    Does anyone know how to get the page count of a multi page PDF file?  I know you can then open each page using the PDFFileOptions (pagetoopen).  But I need to know up front how many pages there are to loop thru to open each page and process each page.
    Any Ideas?

    This script i did for photoshop:
    OK so lets do it working on WIN and MAC without any shell script.
    This solution is not the best but its working.
    I used Try catch to solve it.
    Only issue is that you should at least somehow know how many pages you expect in pdf.. this mean if you are working with books or flyers...
    Then set the maxPagesCount to that number.
    I am working with pdfs with max 20pages.. so i start open the 20 then 19 then 18 and when i am success i know the amount of pages.
    Its not the quicker way but its usable.
    var maxPagesCount = 20;
    var actPagesCount = maxPagesCount;

    When I retry, the same thing happens - fails after exacly 30 minutes.  I am using a window 7 pc (with Service Pack 1) and using Lightroom 5.4.  I have turned off my firewall and antivirus programs, rebooted, and connected directly to my router (not wireless) and ensuring my pc does not go to sleep, but did nothing I try wil help.
    Anyone else get this?  Any ideas?  Thanks!

    Hello,
    I had this problem as well - the upload to Blurb would not work. Creation of a PDF and export as JPEG in the book module worked.
    For me, the solution was to turn off the Windows Firewall while uploading. Now it works!

  • Modifying existing book designs - page sizes etc

    Hi,
    I was playing with the book feature of Aperture recently and decided I wanted to print it on my home printer (r1900). I found out that there was no way to actually adjust the page size in the design to fit properly aligned on A4 paper as the book design is locked to letter size paper.
    I tried creating a custom book - you could define the page size and margins in that, but it lacked all the frames and backdrops that existed in the Snapshots design. So, I started playing....
    Using some information provided on the good Mr Boyer's site re the Aperture book plist file locations and their content, I was able to identify the string in my custom book that specified the page size. Great, thinks I - I'll just change the corresponding string in the Snapshots book plist file and all will be good.
    Not so fast, grasshopper! There is no corresponding string in the Snapshots plist file. After some careful reading and comparing of file structures, I came to the conclusion that if I added the pagesize string to the Snapshots plist, it should cause the book to become A4 size. Working on a copy of the Snapshot book folder with plist and other files, I added the <pagesize> string for A4 and saved the plist file within the entire folder renamed to A4 Snapshot Large.
    It worked - an additional book design now appears in Large Books, called A4 Snaphots Large (yes, I know the Large is redundant but anyway...).
    But here's the wrinkle - there are still framesizes and margin offsets that were configured for letter size paper, so it's not perfect. Has anybody done something similar and knows what other settings to adjust in which plist file?
    If anybody's interested, I'm happy to provide specific detail of the string, but I'm being hassled to go make some plunger coffee for my wife on account of it being Fathers Day (not my job to critique THAT logic...).

    Calx

    Hi
    It sounds as if you know your way around Aperture ...
    I'm making a book and am intensely frustrated. There are 2 things that I want to do and cannot find the way to do them.
    First I want to resize some of the boxes on the standard pages and it won't let me do it. The instruction manual says: As you work on a book, you may need to adjust the layout of individual pages. For example, you may discover that one image in a group should appear slightly larger. You can move and resize the boxes that hold images on individual pages, making minor layout adjustments when a master page design doesn’t quite suffice. You can also create your own master pages to create custom books.
    Wonderful! But it doesn't tell you how.
    The only boxes I seem to be able to resize are those that I add with the 'Add photo box' command but these appear with a different mount and I can't see how to change the mounts so they match all the standard ones.
    Can you please help?
    Thanks

  • PDF Page count question (not coding related)

    Vista has numerous types of details it can display and sort with (size, date modified, etc.).
    I found "pages" in that list but it doesn't seem to be intended for pdf files.
    Can windows (or another software solution) display the page count of individual pdf files when viewing a folder containing multiple pdf's?  If so, how do I get that rolling?
    Thanks.
    Jake

    CoachW:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You're right, the minimum number of pages is 20, single or double sided. You will get 4 blank pages at the end. You can check it out by going thru the ordering process and after the book if finished assembling and you're at the next window, do the following to find and copy the pdf file that iPhoto creates to upload and print:
    How to Find the iPhoto Generated PDF File:
    1 - Start the ordering process and stop after the book has been assembled and you get to the Order pane where you select the cover color, copies, etc.
    2 - Go to the Finder and select the Go->Go to Folder menu item (CommandShiftG).
    3 - copy the following, “/private/var/tmp/folders.501/TemporaryItems/iPhoto” (for Panther the path is "/private/tmp/501/TemporaryItems/iPhoto“), and paste into the Go to Folder search box.
    4 - the iPhoto folder will be brought up. In it will be the PDF file that was generated by iPhoto. You can copy it (Option-drag) to the Desktop to review and/or save.
    Note: the iPhoto folder will not exist before you start the ordering process and is deleted after the order is completed or after you cancel the order and quit iPhoto.
    You can then cancel the operation if you're not happy with the result.

  • Updating index from Word file in Book feature

    I prepared a book using the book feature. 15 chapter files making up the book. The client is going to supply the Index as a Word file with page numbers from his book's word file, which I was hoping to spill into a file in the book and Update the page numbers. I have done this when the book is all one file, but will it work in the book feature? Also, what if a thread is broken somewhere (there were lots of photographs and I think that may have happened a few times). Will that effect the indexes ability to update the page numbers (provided it even works in the Book feature)?
    Thanks!

    Little Toddler wrote:

    That's No Good. The page numbers as they were in the original Word file are worthless.
    .. which I was hoping to spill into a file in the book and Update the page numbers.
    InDesign cannot update the page numbers in an index that was created with Word.
    I have done this when the book is all one file, but will it work in the book feature?
    Uh. Perhaps you did not (see above). Only if you made this index entirely in InDesign is when that's possible. (But yeah, "Include Book" is an option in the Generate Index dialog.)
    Also, what if a thread is broken somewhere (there were lots of photographs and I think that may have happened a few times). Will that effect the indexes ability to update the page numbers (provided it even works in the Book feature)?
    Proper or improper threading is not a problem.
    The problem is you must distinguish between an index made in Word and one made in InDesign -- and I mean "made with", not just "typed in". If your writer supplies you an index made in Word, you can throw it out of the window. What good are his page numbers to you? You can only mimick his index (sort of) if your processed InDesign files still contain the original Index Markers that the author used in Word, and then you are using the same workflow, not "updating the author's index".
    If there are no index markers in your InDesign files, that's where it stops for you. Perhaps you want to insert them, one by one, in their original location (using the supplied index as a guide) -- only then you can create an up-to-date index with InDesign and using your page numbers.
    There is another option: if your author used Word's features to generate the index with, he could try the opposite. That is, you hand him a PDF of the latest version of your book, and he inserts page breaks and adjusts page numbering in his Word document to match yours, word by word. This can be done quite fast because all other formatting is not important -- it's the What's on this Page Number that counts. When done, the author can use Word again to re-generate the index, and hey! the page numbers will match the final version!
    Of course this only works when the author actually used Word's native indexing facility -- if he typed in each entry and its associated page numbers, you got yourself quite a job trying to find what word went where in your version.
