Book file documents path

Hi
I think im going crazy but there must me an option do do this.
I am working o a Multi - language Magazine. So i create a folder Book_SV  and store the bookfile(indb) in that folder and all associated documents to that book.
Now i want to create a new language, so i copy the folder and rename it to create Book_DK to use the first as a template and change the text and make local adjutsments.
My problem is that the Book-file in Book_DK still retains the links to Book_SV.
I've found people complaining about Indesign using absolut path to link to the documents in the indb-file and of course its going to cause trouble when copying folders.
But how do you change the path of a document inside of a book-file?

@Surferboy – you have to build a new book file to get that right.
There are scripts around that would do the tedious work.
Let me see. It's all in German and dates back to 2009, but see the following post by Martin Fischer:
http://www.hilfdirselbst.ch/foren/Katalog_mit_Buchfunktion_P401002.html#401002
Sorting order is alphabetically (depending on the OS, it might be wise to name the InDesign files with a prefix like "001_", "002_", "003_" etc.pp.)

  • Page numbers from deleted book file persist in document

    I have 4 documents that I needed to merge so I attempted to put them in a book file (which I am not at all familiar with how to use). I removed the documents from the book file because it was not doing what I needed it to do, but the auto section page numbers are persisting in the individual documents and I cannot get rid of them. For example I have page numbering starting on page 5, but pages 1-4 have page numbers 5-8 on them and I cannot get rid of them. (I can do this manually of course but would like to know why they are persisting)

    Do you mean the numbers physically appear on the pages and you don't want them there (if so, delete them from the master page(s)) or do you mean the numbering scheme is wrong (if so, check your section and numbering options)?

  • How do I maintain bookmarks in multiple documents when exporting a book file to PDF?

    I am using a book file to organize 10 individual indesign documents. Each document has its own set of bookmarks and links, and their are links that go to other documents within the book as well. How do I (using CS3) print my book file to PDF while maintaining all the interactive components? I want my complete list of bookmarks to appear within the bookmark pane, and I want all of the interactive links in the document to work when they are clicked in the PDF. Doing this for one document is simple, set the preferences to enable the bookmarks and links. However, none of these PDF export settings seem to work when printing the entire book.
    Help!

    I had it open, just wasn't looking in the right spot. Found it... thanks a bundle. This has made my day... as long as the bookmarks work when I export.
    Thanks!

  • Create book file on basis of txt file with local paths?

    I would like to be able to create a book file in FrameMaker 7 or FrameMaker 9 on the basis of a  .txt file reading for instance:
    c:/documents/job.fm
    c:/documents/15ss.fm
    c:/documents/sdf/job1.fm
    Preferrably I would like to be able to paste the lines into a prompt and have a script compiling the book file.
    Is it possible to write a script using FrameMakers API which would do this trick? It is probably possible to use FrameScript but I am not too keen on FrameScript and would rather avoid it.
    Who should one ask in order to have such a thing written?
    regards

    I started using FrameMaker in release 2.x, while I was using x-roff on UNIX; x-roff used a "makefile" to create books from independent chapters, doing all the pagination, numbering, etc. I suspected that FrameMaker's book file worked like that, but it wasn't until many years later that I met someone who'd worked with FrameMaker version 1.x, who confirmed my suspicion.
    Although I can't tell you how to do it, I'm certain that it can be programmed as you want, and that someone will post more information.

  • Why can't I scroll through documents in my book file?

    I am new to Framemaker. I am working on book building. I know that once documents are part of a .book file that I should be able to scroll through from one document in the book to another document.  I have not been able to do that in my .book files. I have sent the .book file to my instructor and he is able to, but I can't. ???  Anyone know why would that be? I am using Framemaker 10 in Windows 7. Thanks in advance!

    I have tried it when the .fm files are all open. I have also tried it by double clicking on a file in the book window and in the file that opens, I start scrolling down to the end. My understanding is that initially, Frame asks you whether to open the next file. But it does not for me. I can only scroll through that one file.
    I don't have FrameMaker available to test, but IIRC, you need to scrill down with arrow keys, not drag through text or with the scroll bar. I'm not sure that keyboard shortcuts like tapping and letting-go Esc p n (for page next) in sequence works.

  • I have a MacBook pro 10.6.8, 2.66 Ghz 8GB 1067MHz. Please does anybody know of software that can auto send emails to a word/pages doc. and insert in date order into a book file, so that you can open like a book

    I have a MacBook Pro 10.6.8, 2.66 Ghz,  8GB memory 1067Mhz running Snow Lepard. I am going mad with trying to organise emails and cross reference to file documents, also the first model iPad.
    Does anybod know if there is any softeware - pages or otherwise that can copy emails automatically to document files and insert them in dated order and also that the file can be reviewed like a book by flicking from bottom right hand corner iPad book style.
    Please help me run my contracts easily, it shouldn't be difficult in this day and age.
    I currently use Apple 'Mail' and microsoft word but am considering any new software that can organise and integrate mail better. I use photo inserts and scanned documents and excel spreadsheets.

    No, I don't know about that kind of software. It isn't Pages anyway. You need somekind of database.

  • I need help with the numbering pages in a book file

    I have a 53 chapter book that which each chapter is its own document. It used to work great. The page numbers of each document used to continue from the last page number of the previous document. That was until today when I opened it and all the page numbers now start at one. I don't know what to do. I have checked all of the options I knew to check. Each document still has the 'automatic page numbering' option selected. I truly don't want to have to go through and manully renumber every document. It will take time I do not have. If I can get somebody's help, it would be wonderful.

    Nor do I. It sounds like everything is set correctly. You might want to try creating a new Book file and add the individaul documents into it and see if that fixes things. Also, have you tried updating the numberingfrom the menu since this started?

  • A book file in InDesign CS3 (.indb) - Mac and PC - crashing issue

    Several months ago, I posted that when I indexed a 300-page book with lots of chapter, generating the index crashed InDesign. This happened initially on a PC running Windows XP home. When I took the book to a Macintosh, it happened also.
    One thing I had done, and I don't know if this makes a difference, is changed words that already had index tags attached to them.
    It has been several months since I've tried this - I've been waiting until this book was completely written before trying again.
    Since this happened, I've also tried to synchronize styles and that also crashed InDesign. Before the index 'broke', both generating the index and synchronizing styles worked like perfectly - amazing functions of InDesign and makes working with a book much easier.
    Now the book is ready. I stripped all of the index codes from the entire book using search and replace, and then the first time I tried to open the Index window, it crashed again.
    When it recovered, there was a message that 5 of my 24 documents in this book may be damaged.
    So I tried opening the indb file, opening the Indexing window, THEN opening the book files and it crashed. I was able to get the error message this time: An exception unkown software exception (0xc000000d) ocurred in the application at location 0x78138aa0. Click OK to terminate the program.
    When InDesign came back up, I closed the Index window and was able to open all of the book's files with no problem.
    My questions are:
    1 - Is there any way to find out where/how those files are damaged?
    2 - Does anyone know what may cause an Index generation or style synchronization to crash InDesign - and then not fix the problem?
    3 - Could this be something other than the index, and how do I figure out what it might be?
    This book is now 374 pages in 24 documents, and I don't think there is a way to go backwards in the InDesign process at this point.
    I'm not sure how clear I'm being with all of this, but the book is to go to the printer Monday and I can't index it.
    I'd appreciate any help I can get.
    Thanks so much,
    Marcy

    Just to add to Eugene's recommendation. Q2ID is worth every last dime of the $200 it cost.
    I just upgraded to the latest version when I received 25 Quark files to convert for an iPad app. Even for early Quark files that InDesign can open, it does a better job.
    BTW, it's also worth noting here that Adobe cannot legally have InDesign open anything later than Quark 4.x files due to the encryption used in Quark 5 and later files. Quark is too dependent on Markzware for XTensions to go after them.

    For the last 5 years (and in IPCC3.x/4.x,UCCX/5.x/7.x) I've used the same basic subflow to read a XML document that contains holiday dates where the queue should be closed.  I've re-used this script on 20+ client installs and it's always worked.  The structure of the script allows you to pass the path and filename of the XML document as parameters to the subflow. (The document is in the repository)
    I loaded this script in UCCX 8.0.2 recently and it crashed with a Java.IO error.  It looked like it was trying to read the file system directly and not the repository. (In the Linux appliance model this kind of makes sense but why is the step trying to read the file system directly?)
    So I open a TAC case (SR# 615243125) and TAC tells me that the method of using the Create File Document step is not supported anymore and that I should specify the filename directly in the Create XML Document step
    The problem that I see (aside from having to edit all my scripts that use XML files) is that the Create XML Document step is looking for the input to be a type DOCUMENT and not a type STRING.  This seems to imply that I have to hardcode the document in each script that I deploy for a customer.  When it was a string it was easy to construct the full file path from parameters and pass to the subflow.
    Questions to the group

    The create XML document input can only be a type DOCUMENT

    #1 Am I missing something here?
    You are mixing two different issues together here.
    The Create File Document step is indeed not needed or supported for creating an XML document. That is why there is a unique step; to trigger XML parsing within the MIVR subsystem.
    Accessing the file system is restricted to a single folder within the VOS model (i.e. 8.0+). This folder is not backed up, replicated, or cleaned up automatically. It was intended to give developers some FS access as a temporary swap location only.
    #2  Do you assume that you'll be able to load a script that
    worked fine in UCCX 7 into UCCX 8 and that it should completely
    function when you're doing everything according to the step reference
    documentation.
    Assume nothing; read the documentation and attend one of the dozens of partner training sessions that CCBU put on advising of the upcoming changes.
    #3 Cisco didn’t document this in any way that I can find.
    You're right, I guess, on the Create File vs. XML Document step. AFAIK Cisco never wrote a notice into the Step Reference Guide explicitly stating that you cannot use the Create File Document although the documentation seemed pretty clear to me without it. File system restrictions are documented in the 8.0 release notes.
    Scripting and Development Series: Volume 2, Editor Step ReferenceUse the Create XML Document step to create a logical document that maps a document to another document variable (where the document has already been pre-parsed as an XML document and is ready to be accessed by the Get XML Document Data step).Use this step before the Get XML Document Data step to obtain data from a document formatted using the Extensible Markup Language (XML).
    #4 How can you use the Create XML Document step in a fashion that would
    let you construct the path of the file and the filename previously in
    the script so you could pass it to a subflow ?  It would seem this functionality has been killed in UCCX 8
    No it hasn't; just concatinate a string to build the Source Document parameter the step needs. Example:  "DOC[" + myFilePath + "]"

  • How can I auto-update all book file links after making a new copy of my project?

    Using Indesign CC 2014,
    Windows 7x64.
    I've created a catalog, using a book file (.indb) which connects 20 Indesign files (.indd) together (so page numbering is continuous, etc).
    Each of the 20 Indesign files all have numerous art asset links and cross references. In total, ~200 files are involved.
    Once finished with the whole thing, I made a copy of the entire folder structure and placed it elsewhere, because I now need to create a modified version of this catalog project for a different company.
    In the end I need to wind up with 2 different, but very similar catalogs.
    Here's my problem: when I made the copy of the entire project and opened the copied over book file, I've found that it's still referencing the older 20 Indesign files back in the first folder structure.
    It's not using the new stuff.
    Same goes for all the art asset links inside each Indesign file.
    Looks like absolute paths only.
    What's the standard operation procedure here? What can I do to avoid having to manually re-link numerous art assets, etc?
    Surely, this is a common need among Indesign users.

    Hey, Peter!
    I've delayed my response here.
    Been dinking around, trying things.
    That's a smart suggestion, but the Package command will round up all assets into a nice compact folder structure ready for production. It's not really what I need.
    I need to keep things as they are, fully editable and unaltered - my folder structure is carefully crafted as is, and I definitely don't need all the fonts dumped into a folder.
    Here's what I'm doing now - I make a complete new copy of the folder structure in question. It includes all InDesign files and linked artwork, etc. Everything.
    I then CHANGE the name of root folder of the folder structure I initially copied. This breaks all the absolute paths of the copy.
    Then I open each InDesign file and the CORRECT links are still automatically found because it looks inside the new folder structure I just made by creating the copy. So all links get "fixed".
    Thank goodness InDesign is far more intelligent about finding missing links than Illustrator.
    This is the best solution I've found. It's not perfect, but nothing ever is.

  • FM9 crashing when trying to open book file

    Help!!  FrameMaker crashes when I attempt to open certain book files.  I am using FrameMaker Version 9.0 p255 on Windows XP pc.  Other details:
    This problem began mid April about 5 weeks ago.  Some book files are just fine while others crash the system. The internal error codes listed with each crash have overlap but are not identical (they all have at least 9004).  The last one stated: “Internal Error 9004, 5242025, 5220528, 6335542.  FrameMaker has detected a serious problem and must quit…”
    Attempting to open individual .fm files within the crashing book file does NOT cause a crash.
    Tried opening it through windows explorer and directly through Frame with the same result.
    Failed fixes attempted per forums.adobe.com:  rebooting, renaming the linguistics library, deleting linguistic library in case it was corrupted (C:\Documents and Settings\jchen\Application Data\Adobe\Linguistics\Dictionaries\FMUserDictionary\all), changing book file name, replacing book file with a backup copy of the book file, and recreating book file.  In the past, replacing book file with an archived copy worked but most of the time it did not work.  Sometimes recreating the book file worked, but not always.
    I believe I cannot do a MIF wash since I need to be able to OPEN the book file first in order to be able to save it as a MIF file??
    Tried to install Frame 9 updates from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=22&platform=Windows, but got an error message stating, “You do not have correct version of FM install on your system.  This patch installer will work only with Version 9 p196.  Patch installer will quit now.”
    I’ve emailed [email protected] (per crash message window) and have not received suggestions on how to fix.  L
    On a side note, my MS Word 2007 is acting super buggy lately… where when I try to do basic things like performing a “Save As”, etc., the screen goes blank or partially blank and takes some time to recover.
    Besides reinstalling FrameMaker 9, does anyone have any suggestions?  Hoping to reach the root of the problem as this issue keeps resurfacing in slightly different forms.
    Thanks.
    Judy

    Judy,
    The 9004 code just means that FM9 crashed. The subsequent numbers provide some clue to engineering as to where the fault was, but can't be deciphered by anyone else. If these seem to be all different values, then this may be an installation or machine issue.
    The p255 version means that you have all of the patches applied.
    The fmerror mailing address is just a one way street, where Adobe keeps track of issues and looks at trends. They will never reply via this channel. Also, since they've been at FM11 for almost a year now, odds are that single FM9 issues won't be flagged as high priority items by engineering - that's kind of why us users have to help each other out.
    Since the individual files open properly and your system doesn't crash, then the problem sounds like it's either in the .book files themselves or you may have a system resource issue (you mention flakiness in Word too).
    If you re-create a clean book file from scratch, does it immediately crash or when you open it again? You could try saving the book file as a MIF at that point and trry working from the MIF. Also does there seem to be any pattern as to when (i.e. after how many open/close cycles) a book file will start to crash after you have recreated it or used an old, archived one?
    Do you have another machine (coworkers?) with FM that you could test the files on? If they don't crash there, then odds are it's something specific with your machine.
    With regards to resources, do you have significant free space available in your system TEMP area? Have you defragmented your drives? How much memory does your system have? Do these crashes occur at any time or after you've been working on the machine (from a cold start) for a while?

  • Indesign Crashing with .indb Book file

    Hi,
    I'm having an issue with using the Book pallette crashing InDesign every time I try to edit it.
    I've found many people having crashing issues on Mac OSX and with exporting to PDF but can't seem to find an instance of crashes due to Book files.
    Basically every time I try to delete, move, add a page to the Book (.indb file), InDesign will pop up a dialogue "Updating page an section numbers" and update the docs within the Book. This works as it should until I add one of my Chapters (largest chapter at: 26, 884 KB). It then proceeds to crash after trying to udate the book every time I try to edit it.
    I'm wondering if there is a Book size restriction or a Chapter size restriction, as the only real difference this chapter has is size. All the Chapters together equate 108, 450 KB, which I would have thought InDesign could handle, which makes me doubt that file size is the issue.
    The whole Book is only 98 pages.

    I used the Remove minor corruption by exportingon my other .indd docs and it reduced the file size dramatically in some cases. The reason being, I was saving chapters from a single consolidated document (53,136 KB), by copying the document then deleting pages. While the file size was reduced each time it must have retained unessessary information when deleting pages. I assume the solution mentioned must clear whatever unused cache is in the document, resulting in the file size shrinking.
    Example:
    Largest chapter at: 26, 884 KB was reduced to 16,888 KB
    2nd largest chapter at 25, 356 KB was reduced to 2,988 KB

  • General Advice and Question on Saving Book Files

    I am still relatively new to FrameMaker. I attended a one on one course 12 months ago for two days. When I attended this course I was totally oblivious to the features of FM, it was totally foreign software. I had looked through the User Guide and as part of the course received Classroom in a Book. I have not spent a lot of time on FM in the last 12 months as I still have to produce manuals in the old format. The changeover is a huge project.
    I have searched this forum many times and found the answers I have needed to many of my questions and learnt so much that I had not fully understood.
    I would just like to confirm now with the users of this forum that I am going about my project in converting to FrameMaker in the right way and I have a question on saving books etc.
    I have Operator and Service manuals for four machines (with variations between each machine and then variations between each of those basic models). Parts of the Operator and Service manuals are interchangeable.
    I want to be able to single source my material and I am setting up an Excel spreadsheet which will breakdown each section of both manuals. Once completed when a machine is ordered the Excel spreadsheet will produce the details of the files needed to complete a book (manual). There will still be work needed on the book files before the manual can be produced.
    My files are double sided with each Chapter starting on the right hand page and I am using variables and conditional text. The manuals contain columns, graphics, tables etc.
    I have done test runs and have managed to accomplish the layout in PDF that I want for the final manuals which will be printed. I am only working on four machines at this stage, once this is set up others will be added or I may have to set up another lot of single source files.
    Am I on the right track?
    My specific question is that currently I use master files for each machine which are updated as needed. These files are then saved to another folder and identified by a Serial Number and Customer. The serialised files are then saved to PDF. I would like to continue this process as in the future the manuals for that specific machine may need to be revised (i.e. Rev. 0 to Rev. 1 and so on).
    So basically I have all my single source files from which I produce a book file and save it to an appropriate folder which identifies its Serial Number and Customer. I don’t know if I have missed something very simple but I want these serialised books to remain as is, I do not want them updated when I make a change to my single source documents. I want to be able to produce my manuals for any number of machines from my single source without changing the book files that have already produced a manual. Is this possible?
    I am using FrameMaker 7.2 b144.
    I hope this posting provides a clear view of what I am trying to achieve.
    Many thanks in advance for any advice and answers that are provided.
    PS This is the first time I have ever posted to any forums.

    It sounds like you want to be able to open the book files and print without updating...
    This isn't the case. Each book will need to be updated before output.
    The reason is that your pagecount (and thus any toc, index, and xref's) will be different in each book and thus will need to be  updated.
    The books will still need a opening and updating prior to output, but you could easily (cheaply) script that process so that you could batch output the books.

  • JS CS4 splitting the document path

    I'm trying to split the document file path so I may navigate up one or two folders and then into a specific subfolder.
    When I try to split the "myDoc.filePath" it errors. If I split "myDoc.name" it works correctly.
    var myDoc = app.activeDocument;
    var myDocPath = myDoc.filePath;
    var mySplit = myDoc.name.indexOf ("_");
    var myFileName = myDoc.name.slice (0,mySplit);
    var myPdfFolder = myFileName + "pdf";
    var mySavePath = myDocPath
    var mySplit2 = myDoc.filePath.indexOf (myFileName);
    var myFinalPath = myDoc.filePath.slice (0,mySplit2) + myFileName + "/" + myPdfFolder;
    alert(myFinalPath);
    Can someone shed light on how to split the document path?
    Thanks,
    John
    Document path: ~desktop/N123456/working/N123456_01
    Note: the last folder name does not always exist. Often the "working" folder is the last folder. Working folder and N123456pdf reside on the same level.
    Goal is to change the save to document path: ~desktop/N123456/N123456pdf

    Here's some code I wrote recently to find a folder named "Snippets" starting from the location of a document. It first looks in the same folder and then its parent and on up until it reaches the top of the file hierarchy:
    //DESCRIPTION: Search for Snippets folder from Document location
    (function() {
        if (app.documents.length > 0) {
            var myFolder = locateRelatedFolder(app.documents[0].filePath, "Snippets");
            if (myFolder == null) {
                alert("Unable to locate Snippets folder");
                return;
            } else {
                alert("Snippets folder is: " + myFolder);
        function locateRelatedFolder(folder, name) {
            while (folder != null) {
                var relatedFolder = Folder(folder + "/" + name);
                if (relatedFolder.exists) return relatedFolder;
                folder = folder.parent;
        } // end locateRelatedFolder
    I've enclosed the code in an anonymous function. Don't let that put you off. You could just delete the first line after the description and the last line.

  • Automatic page numbering not working in book files

    Hi. Using CS3, I have successfully created a book in the past, where the dialog box of the book file shows consecutive page numbers for each file.
    e.g file 1 1-4 (indicating 4 pages, starting on page 1)
    file 2 5-22 (indicating 18 pages, starting on page 5) etc.
    Files automatically renumber if I insert pages, etc.
    This next book I am creating has two problems:
    1. the book file dialog box shows
    file a 1-4 (indicating 4 pages, starting on page 1)
    file b 1-6 (indicates 6 pages - STARTS ON PAGE 5 AS IS IS SUPPOSED TO, in some cases - see problem 2).
    I've followed the protocol below:
    For the first document, I select "start page numbering at" and enter "1". For the rest of the files, I select the automatic page numbering radio button.
    Why won't the dialog box reflect, for file b, pages being 5-11 as it is supposed to? This will get very confusing as the document gets larger.
    2. I created a document by resaving an initial file as a new file in order to create additional documents, keeping the same master but changing content. Even with the automatic page numbering radio button selected, some of these files start on the wrong page (e.g. 5 when the file is supposed to start on 12), after I select Update Page and Section numbers from the book dialog drop-down. I can't figure out what may forcing an override of this page numbering and am looking for a pointer in the right direction...thank you,
    Erin

    I am having the same exact problem as Erin. The page numbers don't even get updated correctly on the documents within the book.
    I'm using InDesign CS3 5.0.3 on Win XP.
    For the first document in the book, "Start Page Numbering at:" is set to "1." "Chapter Number:" is set to 1.
    For the second and third+ documents in the book, "Automatic Page Numbering" is selected, as is "Continue from Previous Document in the Book."
    In the Book panel, all documents show page "1-x". When I open the second and third+ documents, the page numbers all start at page 2.
    Any ideas? Please tell me this is a documented bug because it's driving me crazy.
    Thanks.
