Book Module Export PDF Quality Poor - any solutions?

Hello,
I am trying to figure out a solid solution / workflow for making PDF porfolio's for clients.
The commercial studio where I work needs to send pdf portfolio's to potential clients quite often.
So far we have not been able to find a perfect solution on how to do this with any adobe product (including ACROBAT!)
one of 2 things seem to continually happen.
1. Gigantic file sizes for decent quality PDF's (75 mb +)
2. Horrible color shifts and degraded picture quality for usably sized (3-7mb) portfolio's.
I was hopeful that the new Book Module in LR4 would solve this issue.
admitedly the quality is better IF I save it at jpeg quality 100 and a dpi of 240 but this resulted in a 74 MB file (for 31 images on a 8x10 page)
I clearly can not send a file that large with email....
as soon as I make the dpi or jpeg quality lower they look like total garbage...
Further more the colors shift greatly (on the lower res versions) when opened in something other then Acrobat reader (ie Mac Preview)
Could someone please share a workflow that will result in profesional quality PDF's at a screen resolution.
We have / use the CS5 suite / LR4 / Acrobat Pro
In short as a PRO studio I want PRO quality our of my PRO software...
I would like to keep it as simple and streamlined as possible.
and if at all possible do it all within LR4.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks.

Thanks, I haven't used the LR4 Book module that much and only saw the 'Export Book to PDF' button at the left-bottom of the screen. I tried a Book module 'PDF' Export using 7x7 size, Quality 80, sRGB, 150 dpi, and Standard Glossy sharpening. Here are the results:
1) PDF file size = 3.3 MB
2) Standard Optimized PDF (Acrobat 9 compatibility) = 3.2 MB
I next tried the 'Export Book to PDF' button:
3) PDF file size = 4.8 MB
4) Standard Optimized PDF (Acrobat 9 compatibility) = 975 KB
When viewed on my 25" 1920 x1080 monitor on Windows 7 64bit in Acrobat 9 Pro at 'Fit to Page' zoom size all four PDF files look identical in color and sharpness. When viewed in 'Full Screen' mode only the largest file size PDF (#3 above) created using the 'Export Book to PDF' button exhibits good sharpness. This is probably due to the size of the exported JPEG image having insufficient resolution to fill the screen at 100% (1:1 pixel mapping):
7" x 7" Book at 150 dpi = 6.88" x 150 = 1032x 1032 (Mapped to my 1920 x 1080 monitor)
Requires 1080/6.88" = 157 dpi minimum
7" x 7" Book at 170dpi = 6.88” x 170= 1170 x 1170 (Mapped to your 2560 x 1440 monitor)
Requires 1440/6.88" = 210 dpi minimum
I next created a Book PDF file (3.7 MB) with the above calculated 157 dpi for my 1920 x1080 monitor viewing in Full Screen mode. The results are as sharp as the full-size ‘Export Book to PDF’ file (4.8 MB). I then tried a PDF optimization of the 4.8 MB file using Acrobat Optimization downsample setting of 157 dpi for images above 235 dpi and obtained an equally sharp file 1.0 MB in size. So this method still seems to produce a smaller file than obtainable direct from the LR Book module.
For your NEC MultiSync PA271w monitor with higher 2560 x1440 resolution try using 210 dpi, 80 quality and Standard Glossy Sharpening. When I used Matte High settings the image was clearly over-sharpened for screen viewing. Next try the ‘Export to PDF’ button and then ‘PDF Optimization’ in Acrobat Pro using 210 dpi downsample setting. It shouldn’t hurt to go slightly higher in dpi, but you don’t want to go lower than ‘Full Screen’ 1:1 pixel mapping.

Book Module: Export as indd file and management
I would like to request a feature to export a book module as indd file.
I like PDF's but .indd is nice also so we are able to to more in depth layouts.
Having Lightoom being able to manage all your pictures and book layouts would be nice, alot of things can be done in one application.
Another Feature:  Using Lightoom as book layout management.
Being able to send a page(s) of the book from lightroom into InDesign to do indepth layout and editing, then being able to send it back into lightroom
Almost similar to how you can send a photo from LR in Photoshop to do indepth editing and then send it back into lightroom.
This could and will ease the workflow of book management and layout design.  So lightroom will not only be able to manage photos, but also indesign and book layouts.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4238530#4238530

Why do repeat it here, as you have already filed a feature request for it?
BTW AFAIK this is already implemented: you can use Adobe Illustrator or InDesign or Opensource Scribus to edit layouts.
They are just not ready to publish how - another sign of the quality processes at Adobe.
But you do not send from the book module.
You create upfront layout templates, which you can import for use inside LR book module.
    This is a one-way street.
The book module designers did not acknowledge a use case where you might want to fiddle the exact placement of really chosen images.
It is always you first design a template, then use it.
Love it or leave it - *change it* is not an option that Adobe seems to give to their beta testers.

  • Book Module Export To JPEG Does Not Apply Sharpening

I'm running LR4.1 on Windows 7 64 bit with 5D MK ii raw images and just discovered the Book module 'Export Book to JPEG' produces files that do not have output sharpening applied.
    Book = JPEG
    Size = Standard Landscape
    Cover = Hardcover Image Wrap
    JPEG Quality = 90
    File Resolution = 300 ppi
Sharpening = (Every setting produces the same results)
Media Type = (Every setting produces the same results)
When selecting 'Book = PDF' the sharpening is very obvious and is applied as expected based on the Sharpening setting:
    Glossy Low = least sharpening
    Matte High = most sharpening
Maybe I'm doing something wrong since I can't find a single post in the LR forums where this has been raised, but maybe not!
Can anyone help out or verify?

Are we looking at printed or screen proofs here?
Not that I have an answer for you but sharpening might not be visible on screen if that is what you are comparing. Sharpening for print should differ for print processes from sharpening for screen. The 'print' sharpening, presumably for inkjet although it should be for offset, will be related to final image size, so viewing on screen at a potentially different size and resolution might be obscuring what would occur in a printing process.
    I can't verify since I am still using LR3.6.

In the last few days, it seems that my computer has all of a sudden caught a virus.
As others have pointed out, this isn't malware. That should not be your first (or even fifty-first) thought when your Mac starts misbehaving. For more on this topic, see my Mac Malware Guide.
I know the last ditch effort (after cleaning and maintenance of disc verification and permissions and repairs, is to reboot from the system disc.
You mention "cleaning and maintenance." Have you been running utilities claiming to do those things? If so, you may be the victim of an overly-zealous cleaning job, which has removed important files and damaged your system.
If I'm understanding correctly, you're unable to open any applications at all... is that right? Do you have any backups? If you don't have backups, you're in a sticky situation, as it will be difficult to make backups in your current state, but you shouldn't try any kind of repairs without them. (Actually, you shouldn't do anything with your computer without backups, but this is especially important when something is going badly wrong.)
If you have backups, reboot from your Snow Leopard install disc. From there, first, repair the hard drive with Disk Utility. Once that is done, assuming repairs were successful, reinstall the system. You can simply reinstall it on top of your current system, and it will replace any damaged or lost system files with new copies. (You'll also need to update the system via Software Update after reinstalling.)
If you don't have backups, or if Disk Utility can't repair damage, or if the problem continues even after a reinstall, post back with those details.

  • Book Module: Export to PDF and Blurb stops with error at two page spread

I have a 66 page book created in the book module..
When exporting to PDF the export stops with the error:
"An error occurred while saving the book.
There was an error creating the PDF file. "
The same occurs (at the same book page) when exporting to BLURB
"An error occurred while creating the book."
The creation or export always stops at the same page which is a two page spread. Interestingly there is a two-page spread before that didn't throw an error. I tried to move the problem page to the end of the book. That didn't help because the next two page spread in the book throws an error.
    Any ideas or help?
    Lightroom version: 4.0
Computer: Windows 7, Quadcore, 8 GB RAM

Hi, sorry I do not have a solution but I too have a very similar issue in that the book is the same size but the export to PDF does not start at all
I have tried reducing the image dpi settings. Jpg quality and still nothing
The only success I have had is if I duplicate the book, delete all but 8 pages and then export at full dpi settings of 300 and 100 percent jpg quality
    Any more pages and nothing
It's a great tool and would buy it if this feature actually worked. Oh yeah I only have the trial version at the minute to give it a good thorough test
I have looked for solutions but like your query they are all unanswered
Does adobe actually offer any support or is this all user solutions?
Did you find a solution by the way?

  • Book Module: exporting from Lightroom as a 2 page spread

    Hello Lightroom people,
I have begun to create my albums in the lightroom book module, and I am about 85% happy with it. I have one major complaint, and I'm wondering if it can be corrected:
My album company wants me to submit my album pages as two page jepg spreads. For example, if I am making a 10" x 10" book, rather then submitting pages 1 and 2 as two 10" x 10" jpegs, they require a single, 10" x 20" jpeg that is then printed as pages 1 and 2.
When I export from lightroom, it exports instead as single pages (to use the example from about, two 10" x 10" jpegs for pages 1 and 2). I've noticed that if I design a 2 page spread--then it will export that the way I want it, but obviously no album can have all  2 page spreads.
My work around for this is to import the jpegs in photoshop and lay the pages together the way my album company likes, but this is somewhat time consuming.
Is there a setting in the book module I am missing that could correct this?
    Thanks,
    Ellen

Yes, there is always a workaround, though Lr was supposed to simplify the process, not create more work ... though if we were discussing having to export images ... THEN ... send them to a printer instead of printing them directly in Lr ... there would be much more discussion about the problems the Book module poses for many users ...
If I must export images and use outside software to finish the job (InDesign or otherwise) I may as well give up Lightroom as a "workflow solution" ... I could get the same job done working with Bridge/ACR/Ps workflow ... however ... I bought into the paradigm of Lr being the answer for RAW processing to output workflow ... though Adobe seems to pick and choose which features they really care about ... If Adobe is going to include a Book module, and expect me to financially support the effort ... they could at least offer a module that is functional without being tied to a single vendor ...

  • Feature Request - Book Module export to jpgs!

So dissapointed that you can't export the books to anything but blurb (not really a pro photographer solution!) or PDF. My lab doesn't take PDFs, so I have to convert everything to jpg from PDF. Kind of a workflow killer

Ditto. I just spent an hour trying to find either another source for books that accepts pdfs, or to get LR4 to produce a jpeg. Both failed.
In order for the book section to be useful to professionals, it needs to output high resolution jpegs.

  • Premiere Pro/Media Encoder CS4 exports 0 KB movie, any solution?

I have a (simple) project in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 4.2.1 with two video files (same source/codec) and one audio file. The video file starts a few seconds before the audio file starts. There are no transitions and effects, besides filling the left audio channel. However, the problem is that all my attempts at exporting this project to a video file with h.264/aac, PAL widescreen, have been futile.
The Adobe Media Encoder CS4 4.2.0 takes a considerable amount of time (~4.5 hours) and generates files (m4v & aac) of an appropriate size (~2.5 GB), but deletes those files as soon as it is finished with encoding. This leaves me with an empty y.mp4 of exactly 0 KB.
I have fully updated both Premiere Pro and Media Encoder. My system is a MacBook with an Intel 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, running Mac OS 10.6.
Is there any known solution for this problem?

    Welcome to the forum.
    First, a few questions:
1.) What is the source footage's format/CODEC (both your Video and your Audio)?
2.) Can you tell us about the I/O sub-system on your MB, i.e. your HDD's, their size, speed, free space (very important) and how you have them allocated?
3.) Can you Export to another muxed format, as a test?
4.) Can you Export as non-muxed (Multiplexing set to None) and get two usable elemental/elementary streams? Do each play fine? Again, this is just a test.
As you observe, the two streams are first created, and then when complete, they are muxed into one file with both the Audio and Video stream. Something is causing the muxing to not complete. This could be an issue directly with AME, or perhaps with your H.264 CODEC, or something like free space on your target HDD.
    Good luck,

  • InDesign CS5.5 - Book export PDF - Folio

    Hi
I have been noticed that the BOOK option PDF exported from InDesign CS5.5 is having issue with continuous page numbering (Folio). The merged book PDF is having repeated Folio in Running Heads, but the InDesign Source document has the Folios placed perfectly with page numbering option. Individual PDF created from InDesign document was also fine - no issues with Folio. CS5.5 update 7/7.2 is having the issue with Folio on Book exported PDF.
Have any one of you faced these issues and solution - Please update.

Had the same problem – drove me mad. Only one or two chapters in each book were effected. And because we did not spot this, we were selling books with the same page number all through a chapter.
    Solution.
I found a solution that works every time, and it is quite simple. The problem lies in the Master Pages section.
The solution is to create a new Master Page (but not copying the previous Master). Copy details from a Master Page that works! Make sure the new Master has the same dimensions and indents as the old one.
Then change all the pages in that chapter to the new Corrected Master. (A global change to all pages – easy to do).
Presto – you should have proper page numbering in the resulting pdf.
    Cheers,
    Ralph

  • CS3:  Export PDF crash...located the source, now what?

InDesign CS3 keeps crashing on page 86 or 87 of a file I'm trying to Export to PDF.  I know this from watching the progress bar move across the screen, everything is fine until the status box shows page 86/87, then poof, InDesign disappears and requests to send an error report.  I was under the impression this was being caused by the Export PDF settings.  With printer's marks enabled, the Export PDF crash occurs on page 86.  Turn printer's marks off and the crash happens on page 87.  So I tried all kinds of things with Export PDF settings but came up empty.
Then I messed around with pages 86 and 87.  Removed text frames from page 86 and tried various combinations with Export PDF.  Did the same thing on page 87, and then combinations of 86 and 87 at the same time.  No good...keeps crashing.  I removed ALL content from pages 86 and 87 and the Export PDF still crashes, even with blank pages.
I finally got a clue when moving text frames to other pages.  Both pages have 4 text frames each.  When I moved the top text frame on page 87 to a different page -- in this case I moved it to page 98 -- the Export PDF crashed on page 96.  Not page 98 where it was located, but page 96. Weird, but it gave me a clue.
    Long story short:
Export PDF causes InDesign to crash on page 86 or 87 unless the uppermost text frame on page 87 is moved to a non-printing layer. The text frame can remain on page 87 or be on the pasteboard; either way, it must be non-printing to prevent a crash in Export PDF mode.
Any suggestions?  I've already searched the text frame and nothing out of the ordinary catches my eye.  The text frame is necessary for a book project.  I can't consolidate it with another frame.
    Thanks in advance!

My memory is not so great after all...
The bug was in CS4 and it was fixed in 6.0.4. I remembered the rest correctly...

  • Unable to export from the Book Module in LR-4.4 to Blurb, PDF and JPEG

I have made a book in the book module and was really looking forward to send it to Blurb for printing. I push the "Send book to Blurb... " button but nothing happens. I have tried to export to PDF and JPEG aswell, but nothing. I am Connected to internet, I have an account at Blurb but no reaction. Are there any settings I have missed or are there any bugs that prevents me from exporting? Do Blurb ship to Norway or is that the problem? Please help!!!

When you click on <Send Book to Blurb> a dialog should come up that asks for your ID and password for your Blurb account. I don't know if Blurb ships to Norway - you probably can find out at the Blurb website. But I don't think that this is the problem here since you also cannot export a PDF or JPGs.
I don't know of any specifics why this is not possible for you but it's worth trying to replace the Preference File.
This file can go "funny" and is then responsible for all kinds of strange behavior of Lr. The remedy is replacing the Preference File.
BTW: Re-installing Lr or updating / upgrading Lr does not replace the Preference File since it is designed to "survive" upgrades.

  • Any way to export a book using a PDF preset?

Let me first explain the workflow we have right now, and that we are slowly trying to improve upon, but nonetheless...
I am designing a newspaper. We have two individuals who pagenate the pages, laying out the advertisements on them before sending me a packaged InDesign document of each page.
I, right now, am going and opening each InDesign document, then dragging it into my master document, which takes some time. I then finish laying out the newspaper with copy.
I thought recently I might instead simply open all the InDesign documents in a book and then finish laying out the newspaper from there.
My First question though is, can you actually thread text from one text box to a text box in another document within the book? If not, is there any practical solution to this?
Secondly, I tried exporting a book with one of the PDF presets we have created, but I only saw the two options, PDF print and PDF interactive. Is there no way to export a book as one of the pdf presets?
    I'm working on a mac on CS6.

First, no, you cannot thread between files, so you would need to move pages from one file into the other.
Second, you can certainly export the book to PDF. There are two "flavors" of PDF, interactive or print, but either one can be used to make a PDF from the entire Book. Choose Export Book as PDF from the Book Panel flyout menu, choose your flavor as appropriate, then choose a location and finally the options.

After investing a bunch of time laying out a photo book, I would like to generate a PDF in order to proof it before sending the book to BLURB for printing. After numerous attempts, I am unable to generate a PDF of the book or, by clicking the 'Send Book to BLURB' button, access the sign in window for uploading to BLURB. Although, if I create a new book (without images or text) I am able to access the window for saving it (the blank book) as a PDF to my hard drive and I am also able to access the sign in window for uploading to BLURB. I could sure use some help. Please let me know what I might be doing wrong! Thank you very much.

You're running PowerPC code under Rosetta emulation on an Intel based system -- and Rosetta has become increasingly unstable (and Apple got rid of it in 10.7, so they won't be fixing any of the bugs)
Your best solution is to upgrade to an Intel native version of Photoshop.

It's taken off both iPhone and the new iPad

You can insert the PDF that you want to have on iBooks trough iTunes using the library section "books", or simply drag and drop the PDF to iTunes and sync your iPhone, iPad.
You can also open a PDF on Safari and tap on open in iBooks at the top of screen.
