Book Non-Pick Images confusion

I am totally confused and frustrated. I am trying to create a photo book for the first time and am working on one within a particular project. I have an edited color and black and white versions created from every master shot.
When I try to place an image on the photo book I get a bizarre message that tells me I can tried to use a "Non-Pick Image." What difference should it make?
If I select the image I want and make it the pick in the stack, it moves to the top of the stack, but the little check mark icon doesn't change and it STILL won't let me use the image I specified as "the pick" on the book.
Why do I need to use strictly "the pick" image from a stack? Makes it impossible to use the same image from a stack more than once. Nothing I seem to do allows me to use anything but the master image.
This shouldn't be this hard. I see the image I want, I drag and drop it where I want and I'm done. How do I get around this bug/feature?
Thanks.

I experienced another side effect to this 'feature', and in figuring it out, I think I have the answer to your question. The quick answer is to unstack everything, or create new versions. If you want to understand what's going on, and learn the third way, read on...
There is a tiny mention in the manual that Stacks contain a series of related images, and one pick. This 'one pick' fact is very important. Stacks allow you to group images, but you can only designate ONE IMAAGE from the stack as the one to use. (The 'Pick'.) All the others in the stack are preserved in case you want to use one of them later instead, but they are basically hidden and can't be used in albums or books (I think). So, one pick per stack, and that is the left-most image (the one that stays on top when the stack is closed).
There is one confusing exception to this. You can designate another image in the stack as the 'Album Pick'. This tells Aperture that for this album only (or book), use the image in the stack with the check mark instead of the stack pick. You can set an Album Pick by selecting the image and choosing Stack > Set Album Pick (or something -- don't have Aperture open right now).
I haven't tried this yet, but I think if you make one image in the stack the Album Pick, then you can use two images from the same stack: the Stack Pick, and the Album Pick.
I still don't really get why.
Here is the scary side effect with books. BEWARE! So, I spent hours and hours building a 40 page book. I wanted two versions of the book -- both mostly identical, but a few pages were to be different in the second one. So, I got the first book perfect, adjusted all the images, proofed it, etc. Once I was satisfied, I duplicated that book and intended on making the few minor changes to the duplicate. Well, after I while, I noticed in shock that some images in the duplicate book did not have adjustments applied to them. After more investigation, I discovered that these 'non-adjusted' images were actually DIFFERENT IMAGES! Whereever I had used images from stacks in the first book, the duplicate book used some other images from the same stack!! This was disturbing!!! Such a major change, and NO NOTIFICATION.
I don't fully understand this, but basically, if you unstack the images, or use the Stack Pick and Album Pick, or create new versions of the images, you will avoid this problem.
So, Stacks are powerful and can be confusing. They are more than neat little organizers as I found out -- not at all like iPhoto's Events.
Does anyone have anything to add? What am I missing here?
Thanks

  • Non photo images into photo book

    Can I drop a non photo image from the internet into a photo book (a cartoon picture for example)?  I have tried saving the image to iPhoto but then can not seem to drag it into the frame in the book.

    It depends on the format of that the image is saved in. Jpegs no problem, other formats there may or may not be.
    That said, Apple may baulk at printing images that you do not have copyright on.

  • I want a preview for only the pick image

    I sync my photos with an iPod. As such I only want to sync the images that are picks. I edit virtually every single image in my library, so as it is if I have automatic generation of previews turned on, all the images including non-pick ones in each stack will have a preview. This causes 2 or more versions of the same image to be put onto the iPod not just the best one.
    For the past few months I have had automatic generation of previews turned off, and I generate them by hand after I finish editing a batch. This is a little time consuming and I often either forget to generate the previews or somehow I manage to generate previews for all images in a stack. Aperture doesn't help because it doesn't show which images have previews and which don't.
    Rather than manually going through each stack and seeing which images have previews, I'd like to automate the process somewhat to make sure that only the picks have previews. Is there an easy way to do this?
    I've thought about selecting all, then opening all stacks, then inverting the selection, and deleting previews from those selections. Then inverting the selection again and updating the previews. I'm not sure if this would work and I'm a bit scared to do this on a large library (opening all stacks in a selection of 10000 stacks could take a few days?)
    I wish Aperture had better handling of previews in this regard.

    Problem with creating a smart album is that all images would show up in that one album on the iPod and I want them somewhat separated, even though no hierarchy of folders on the ipod makes that a bit of a paint too.
    I am currently trying the select/invert method. I'm doing it one album at a time so it's more manageable. At the same time I'm able to make sure I have the correct image as my pick, and also forces me to reexamine what photos I have in my albums and delete any stuff that isn't worthy It's working pretty well, though it is time consuming. Once I'm done I'll have to be careful to make sure only the picks get a preview.

  • Book of Photographic Images

    In the spring, I will be designing a book of photographic images; perhaps as many as 400. There will be one image on each page and limited if any text. I would like to made an index of the images, but will probably use page number; not sure yet.
    I designed a small book of 16 pages and I am sure there is a better workflow than what I used. I just used one document. For the big book, I plan to use four documents; the book will probably be divided by seasons.
    Here is my set-up at this point, with limited experience with ID: The image files are accessed through Lightroom, then to photoshop for resizing and perhaps some editing, then put into a folder and then 'placed' in InDesign.
    No doubt that is oversimplified, so if anyone has suggestions and ideas, please tell me before I get too far down the path and then wish I'd done something different.
    vasi

    So far that seems right to me, but books are really very small part of what I do.
    I think, though, that you'll have problems with indexing, or a TOC which I would think you'd want, without text, since those are text-based functions. You can put the text on a non-printing layer if you don't want it to show up in your printed book, but it will still be accessible to indexing and TOC.

    Can you zip up a few of your GoPro images, upload them to dropbox.com and post a share link, here, so others can experiment with them, or do you mean this issue is global to all camera models?

  • Delete non-picked items in delivery using iDoc

    Hello gurus,
    I'm integrating SAP ECC and external WM solutions using iDocs. The outbound delivery is created in SAP ECC and sent to WMS using DESADV iDoc. The picking is performed in WMS and the list of shipped items with batch numbers are returned to SAP and Goods Issue is posted. iDoc WHSCON is supposed to be used for that purpose.
    The problem is that in case if not all the line items were shipped it's necessary to delete them from the delivery because otherwise GI will not be posted. But the non-picked items no longer exist in the response iDoc WHSCON so it's even impossible to set QUALF=DEL for these items. WMS sends back only actually shipped items in iDoc, and not the deleted ones.
    Do you have any solutions for overcoming this problem?
    Maybe there is any BAPI or iDoc qualifier that will allow to delete all items from the delivery so that they will be recreated by the same iDoc? Or there is any checkbox in SAP that will automatically delete unpicked items during posting of GI?
    Thanks!

    hi
    in this both error comes ,
    1)E VL 609 20 Delivery has not yet been put away / picked (completely)
    a) picking quantity not entered , in delivery , first you enter the picking quantity ,
    you create the 2 lines for sale order , so create for one line item for delery , go to vlo1n enter shipping point , sale order number line item number  1 to 1 enter press enter system will take only one item in delivery then you enter the picking quantity , and pgi ,
    in delivery two line item only line item enter picking quantity and another line item not enter the picking quantity , it not possible to pgi , both line item you enter the picking quantity ,
    you create the same delivery number for 2line item , so first complete the 1st line item pgi and , go to vl02n and enter , click on menu bar out bound deliverrs-delivery sale order -enter sale order number and line item , and do the pgi ,
    2)VL 608 20 Delivery has not yet been completely processed by WM
    you process activate the wm , so you can do the lt03 , then it will come vlo2n and check the picking quantity it will come auto matically

  • Is it possible to load a non-standard image using some Java API?

    Hi,
    My "problem" is:
    1. I have an image called "mediterranean_sea.IMG" (non-standard image format)
    2. I need to process it (histogram, palette, etc).
    3. I'm wondering if it is possible to load this image an process it using some Java API.
    4. I've tried to do this using JAI but I think that this API only works with TIFF, PNG, JPEG, etc.
    Any idea?
    Thanks in advance,

  • A simple way to apply crop from photo book frame to image version?

    Hi
    Running MacOS X 10.8.5, Aperture 3.4.4
    I have the following workflow for photobooks creation (a custom photobook):
    0) Prepare an album with photos I'd like to create my book from.
    For 99% of my photos I have TIFF files as masters. Not RAW files.
    I use managed library.
    1) Create a book layout (place images, select different crop factors for frames, etc)
    2) Looking at specific page adjust photos using Aperture adjustments (exposure, color balance) to make images to looks similar on the page
    3) A the final step, apply some adjustments from external plugins.
    Here I have the question from subject:
    * The Aperture  sends the whole file to plugin (i.e. some of Nik collection plugins, but it might be a different plugin)
    * But on my photo book page I have a different crop factor (i.e. TIFF master is 2:3, on photo book page I frame it to 1:2)
    * As the result some of the adjustments I did in external plugin are not visible on the photobook page, which produces a different visual effect, which I don't want.
    Currently, to workaround this, I have to manually apply the same crop factor to image version, then make a version copy, open the plugin. Only after these steps Aperture will send the desired crop factor to external plugin.
    This is some sort of technical work which I need to do manually, no brain is involved here - I'm looking to some ways how to automate this.
    As the result, I'd like the crop factor from photo frame from Aperture custom book to be applied to image version.
    Any ideas on scripts/external programs are welcome.
    Thank you!

  • Problem rotating a non-square image

    I am getting very strange results trying to use an AffineTransform to rotate a rectangular but non-square image. If I pre-define a destination Image, then after using the AffineTransform to filter the source, most of the destination image is black (because the resultant image isn't positioned correctly). This is especially true when I try to rotate an image 90 degrees counter-clockwise, in which case I don't know what happens to the rotated image.
    If I try to just let the filter method produce a new image to return to me, it returns a completely square image, which cuts off some of the image if it isn't square. I'm really lost as to what to try next. Here is my code...
    at = new AffineTransform();
    at.setToTranslation( roiImage.getWidth()/2, roiImage.getHeight()/2);
    at.rotate( Math.toRadians( angle ) );
    at.translate( -roiImage.getWidth()/2, -roiImage.getHeight()/2);
    AffineTransformOp atOp = new AffineTransformOp( at, renderingHints );
    /* construct the new destination image with the correct post-rotation bounds */
    BufferedImage rotatedImage = new BufferedImage( roiImage.getHeight(), roiImage.getWidth(), roiImage.getType() );
    atOp.filter( roiImage, rotatedImage );
    roiImage.flush();
    roiImage = rotatedImage;
    Any ideas on why this might be acting so strange? Can I even use an AffineTransform to rotate a non-square image?

    could you provide me a code sample? I've tried doing it that way as well, but I'm still having troubles. I think I'm just missing something small and simple :-(
    thanks for the quick response.

  • Ability to Select non-Keyworded Images

    Working through importing images I stamp most on import. On rare occasion this is not applicable as they are so varied.
    FEATURE REQUEST:
    To make sure my library has all my photos keyworded I would like the ability to click under Keywords->Non-Keyworded. This would display all photos without any keywords.
    Thanks and hope this simple fix can be implemented.
    Wayne

    from Lightroom-Extra.com
    Find all untagged (non keyworded) images.
    1) make sure you are not using quick collection.
    2) Grid mode / Library / click all photographs.
    3) Select all displayed images Mac "Apple A". Then press B for a Quick collection.
    4) Deselect all images.
    5) Now Grid mode / keywords / and shift click all keywords.
    6) select all images in the grid, Mac "Apple A". press B to deselect from the  Quick collection.
    7) Grid mode / Library / select quick collection, they are all non keyworded items.
    or
    Shift select all Keywords in Keyword Tags.
    Select All in Grid. Cmd/Ctl-A.
    Go to All Photographs.
    Menu/Edit/Invert Selection
    You can then press 'B' to put them in Quick Collection to work on.
    After Keywording each one or selection of images, while still selected do 'B' to drop them from QC as done and go to the next.

  • Interesting technical paper on Non-destructive Imaging

    John Nack references a useful technical paper in a recent
    blog entry. The paper titled
    Non-Destructive Imaging: An Evolution of Rendering Technology by Peter Krogh covers a number of topics and one in particular illuminates the essential difference between file browsers (such as Bridge) and cataloging software (such as Lightroom).
    With a file browser the truth is in the file; with cataloging software the truth is in the catalog. With cataloging software the raw image file need not be updated (now or in the future) and it is the more compact and transportable catalog that becomes the dynamic object and at all times containing a repository of the image "truth".

    >Jao - Sure, that shows you the images as edited just fine... wooopeeee!
    Unbelievable, I show you more than what you asked for but hey whatever...
    This database has all that in it. The database schema has the standard XMP in it. You can directly get that from the database and use those in ACR. It is simple to do so and not at all opaque. The command in SQL is simply: "select xmp from Adobe_AdditionalMetadata;" It also has a link to where the preview jpeg is stored, all in completely open, industry standard database format. Nothing tough or obscure about it. Adobe should be commended for using SQL lite and making the format so accessible. Making it so easy to access increases its usability quite a bit as the neat little focal-length histogram trick shows. Just a few lines of code!
    >Go ahead, put all your eggs in one basket... they are your photos... do whatever you want with them... but when your catalog corrupts and you lose all your edits (or press CTRL-Z and undo all your work), don't come crying to me...
    I won't because I am not that dumb. But my backup and timeproof strategy has nothing to do with Lightroom's database not being good enough for the long term because it is. It is just pure common sense to "not put all my eggs in one basket." I backup original RAW files with associated xmp and on separate disks, developed high quality jpegs or even tiffs for those very special images. Even with that, I have never needed those backups but it does give me a good fall back. Nobody in their right mind that professionally depends on photography would rely on a single program, no matter the provenance.
    >Heck, create a catalog and wait a couple of years to use it again... odds are you won't be able to open it because of version changes.
    Extremely unlikely. If you have this much distrust of Adobe products then what are you doing here. It is certainly not constructive to be seeding so much utterly unfounded FUD. Also as I said, it will not hurt me at all if such an apocalyptic vision comes to pass. Presumably I could simply open it with the current version of Lightroom (which doesn't magically stop working, neither will ACR) or even if I had misplaced that and somehow would have forgotten to back up xmp files on my backups, I would simply extract the xmp files from the sql lite database using open source tools and use those in acr or something similar. I could even extract the preview jpegs that Lightroom stores alongside the database file.

  • Cannot import non-camera images onto mac

    I'm using the Xperia Z3 Compact with the 'Sony Bridge for Mac' software - I'm only using this software because no other software will even recognise the connected phone. It seems that software is the only way to import my images from the phone.
    HOWEVER my options seem to be "show camera photos only" or "show all photos". The "camera photos" exclude any images downloaded from apps, any edited images, any screenshots. The "all photos" lists a huge amount of images, so I can only assume it's including all kinds of temporary files - but it doesn't show thumbnails of any non-camera images. The program gives an error when I try to import any image without a thumbnail.
    Is there an alternative, better, EASIER way of getting all of my images onto my computer?!
