Book of Photographic Images

In the spring, I will be designing a book of photographic images; perhaps as many as 400. There will be one image on each page and limited if any text. I would like to made an index of the images, but will probably use page number; not sure yet.
I designed a small book of 16 pages and I am sure there is a better workflow than what I used. I just used one document. For the big book, I plan to use four documents; the book will probably be divided by seasons.
Here is my set-up at this point, with limited experience with ID: The image files are accessed through Lightroom, then to photoshop for resizing and perhaps some editing, then put into a folder and then 'placed' in InDesign.
No doubt that is oversimplified, so if anyone has suggestions and ideas, please tell me before I get too far down the path and then wish I'd done something different.
vasi

So far that seems right to me, but books are really very small part of what I do.
I think, though, that you'll have problems with indexing, or a TOC which I would think you'd want, without text, since those are text-based functions. You can put the text on a non-printing layer if you don't want it to show up in your printed book, but it will still be accessible to indexing and TOC.

  • Book Non-Pick Images confusion

I am totally confused and frustrated. I am trying to create a photo book for the first time and am working on one within a particular project. I have an edited color and black and white versions created from every master shot.
When I try to place an image on the photo book I get a bizarre message that tells me I can tried to use a "Non-Pick Image." What difference should it make?
If I select the image I want and make it the pick in the stack, it moves to the top of the stack, but the little check mark icon doesn't change and it STILL won't let me use the image I specified as "the pick" on the book.
Why do I need to use strictly "the pick" image from a stack? Makes it impossible to use the same image from a stack more than once. Nothing I seem to do allows me to use anything but the master image.
This shouldn't be this hard. I see the image I want, I drag and drop it where I want and I'm done. How do I get around this bug/feature?
    Thanks.

I experienced another side effect to this 'feature', and in figuring it out, I think I have the answer to your question. The quick answer is to unstack everything, or create new versions. If you want to understand what's going on, and learn the third way, read on...
There is a tiny mention in the manual that Stacks contain a series of related images, and one pick. This 'one pick' fact is very important. Stacks allow you to group images, but you can only designate ONE IMAAGE from the stack as the one to use. (The 'Pick'.) All the others in the stack are preserved in case you want to use one of them later instead, but they are basically hidden and can't be used in albums or books (I think). So, one pick per stack, and that is the left-most image (the one that stays on top when the stack is closed).
There is one confusing exception to this. You can designate another image in the stack as the 'Album Pick'. This tells Aperture that for this album only (or book), use the image in the stack with the check mark instead of the stack pick. You can set an Album Pick by selecting the image and choosing Stack > Set Album Pick (or something -- don't have Aperture open right now).
I haven't tried this yet, but I think if you make one image in the stack the Album Pick, then you can use two images from the same stack: the Stack Pick, and the Album Pick.
I still don't really get why.
Here is the scary side effect with books. BEWARE! So, I spent hours and hours building a 40 page book. I wanted two versions of the book -- both mostly identical, but a few pages were to be different in the second one. So, I got the first book perfect, adjusted all the images, proofed it, etc. Once I was satisfied, I duplicated that book and intended on making the few minor changes to the duplicate. Well, after I while, I noticed in shock that some images in the duplicate book did not have adjustments applied to them. After more investigation, I discovered that these 'non-adjusted' images were actually DIFFERENT IMAGES! Whereever I had used images from stacks in the first book, the duplicate book used some other images from the same stack!! This was disturbing!!! Such a major change, and NO NOTIFICATION.
I don't fully understand this, but basically, if you unstack the images, or use the Stack Pick and Album Pick, or create new versions of the images, you will avoid this problem.
So, Stacks are powerful and can be confusing. They are more than neat little organizers as I found out -- not at all like iPhoto's Events.
Does anyone have anything to add? What am I missing here?
    Thanks

  • A simple way to apply crop from photo book frame to image version?

    Hi
    Running MacOS X 10.8.5, Aperture 3.4.4
I have the following workflow for photobooks creation (a custom photobook):
    0) Prepare an album with photos I'd like to create my book from.
For 99% of my photos I have TIFF files as masters. Not RAW files.
    I use managed library.
    1) Create a book layout (place images, select different crop factors for frames, etc)
    2) Looking at specific page adjust photos using Aperture adjustments (exposure, color balance) to make images to looks similar on the page
    3) A the final step, apply some adjustments from external plugins.
Here I have the question from subject:
    * The Aperture  sends the whole file to plugin (i.e. some of Nik collection plugins, but it might be a different plugin)
    * But on my photo book page I have a different crop factor (i.e. TIFF master is 2:3, on photo book page I frame it to 1:2)
    * As the result some of the adjustments I did in external plugin are not visible on the photobook page, which produces a different visual effect, which I don't want.
Currently, to workaround this, I have to manually apply the same crop factor to image version, then make a version copy, open the plugin. Only after these steps Aperture will send the desired crop factor to external plugin.
This is some sort of technical work which I need to do manually, no brain is involved here - I'm looking to some ways how to automate this.
As the result, I'd like the crop factor from photo frame from Aperture custom book to be applied to image version.
Any ideas on scripts/external programs are welcome.
    Thank you!

  • Can anyne suggest a book on digital imaging for computer newbie?

    Hi,
i have a friend who's a great amateur photographer - he know's his digital cameras / what makes a good shot etc.
He's just bought a new Macbook pro to take his digital photography a step further, he's joined a photography club, and everyone around him is talking about photoshop.
At the photography club he was asked to prepare an image for projection - 72dpi 720x1024...
I thought i could explain, and go on to subjects like printing etc. I found it very hard.
There's loads of stuff on the web, but this is a computer newbie, as i say. So it would be great if there was a handy book out there that could help out.
    Any suggestions?
    Many thanks in advance,
    nw9

At the photography club he was asked to prepare an image for projection - 72dpi 720x1024...
If the image is for projection then the only specification he has to worry about is the dimension of the image, 1024 x 720. He just needs to crop/resize the image in Photoshop to 1024 x 720 pixels and save a copy. DPI does not come into play until you print an image. See The Myth of DPI .
I believe MacWorld offered several books on digital photography. You might search their site for them.

  • Printing document as a "book" with two images per page

I am a new user and am struggling to take a 100 page text document with imbedded photos and print it like a "book." What I'd like to do is print using 2 images to a page (the same image) and duplexing, so that I essentially print two "books" that are duplexed (I will then cut the document in half) and then bind. I have not been able to figure out how to print 2 page 1's, then two page two's, etc., as a single print job. Can anyone help me?

    Hi,
Not sure if I fully understand what you are trying to achieve, but this may help.
When you are in the book layout page over to the left you will see thumb nail images of your book layout. Starting with the cover and then inside cover and pages etc etc. Below this to the left are a row of icons, choose the plus "+" then scroll down to the bottom where you get a choice of "Duplicate page." Hope that helps?

  • Creating a Book from selected images in Aperture browser creates empty book

I have been a happy user of Aperture 2 for several weeks now but I have been stumped by a problem when I come to layout a book. Help please!
The problem is that any book I create contains no pictures in the aperture browser - so I can't add anything to my empty books. I have tried everything to get images into my book but nothing works. What is odd is that Projects tab I see that the total number of photos I selected at book creation time is given correctly. I just can't see any in the browser.
I have also tried to drag and drop pictures into the book pages and the project folder but nothing happens.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Steve

    Hi Thomas,
    Thanks so much for replying.
In answer to your question - the bottom bar of the browser does not say anything - and yet the Projects tab lists the book and also the number of images that I selected when I made the New -- Book from the pull down menu option.
I also tried to add images to the book's browser by drag and drop from another project or folder to the name of the book project in the project list. It doesn't work for me.
Very odd as I have been happily importing, exporting and publishing web galleries for several weeks now.
FYI, my Aperture library is about 100 Gb in size with 7,700 photos. I run OS X 10.5.3 on my Intel MacBook Pro 17 inch with 6TB of firewire connected disks.
Any help or ideas are very much appreciated.

  • Invoke the image selecting thing in Address Book on regular images?

When you select an image in Address Book, there's this button that allows you to put the image through filters. There's a similar thing in Adium, so I'm assuming it's some sort of thing that can be called at will by osx. Is there a way to do this on just like, a regular image lying around in a folder or on my Desktop?
    Sorry if I sound vague...

    Hi Catherine,
I was aware of what you had asked for.
I was starting with my memories of what used to work in iChat.
Excuse the width of this pic  But in the "Recents" section I chose the Union Flag and changed it to that instead of my regular Sig pic.
    Uploaded with Skitch!
I have put up the Address Book along side to show that the Address Book does not change.
I can do similar with a Buddy pic (although what I have now was not that easy and has included a shut down of the computer)
    Uploaded with Skitch!
To restate what I did yesterday.
I highlighted the PC at home Buddy in the Main list  (the one in the "background")
I brought up the Info Card (CDM + i together)
I dragged a Pic to the Buddy's pic in the card and it change there to the wedding pic.
It did not change in the Buddy list so I looked in the  Address Book
    It had changed there.
As a test I then quit Messages and when I reopened it the pic was the one from the Address Book.
Today I have then reset the Sig pic (all Buddy List get the same Buddy Pic at the moment)
Therefore Messages is Sending a different pic than the Address Book and it is showing that rather than the Address Book card pic.
I do realize that I may be getting different results to you as I seem to have lost the ability to edit the Address Book directly.
The Pic changed via iChat but I cannot change it back.
On another Note, iChat used to be able to set the Buddy Pics for each Buddy List separately and I don't seem to have that option either.

  • Producing an iPhoto book using RAW images

I have used IPhoto to create photo books using many cameras.  Now I use a NIKON DSLR 5300 camera and cannot produce the phonebook.  I am fairly certain after doing much research that it is to do with RAW images.  I have OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 and the latest Digital Camera RAW compatibility Update V6.02 was installed on my MAC on 16 December 2014.
I have created the book in I Photo, the assembly process gets completed and when the book is to be UPLOADED an error message comes up saying that I could either cancel or re-try.  Have re-tired over a dozen times - no luck.
Can anyone help me troubleshoot this one please?

The error message AN ERROR OCCURRED UPLOAD YOUR ORDER has only arisen since using my Nikon camera.
It may be a coincidence, Linda. If there is another problem with your Mac or AppleID, that occurred at the same time, it might look like the new camera were the culprit.  Let's summarize, what you already explored with Larry:
When I preview the book it looks great, I then proceed to BUY BOOK.
To be clear, the preview created with http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040  looks great?  No missing photos or text in the preview? Then your RAW photos are fine.
I used SAFE MODE to buy my book; however the error remains.
Safe Mode will clear caches and disable non-standard extensions. If your network is reliable, the order should go though.
    Have you checked these things?
Try to disable timeouts by turning off the energy saver in system Preferences, so your Mac does not fall asleep at a critical moment.
Disable fire walls and antivirus filters, like Little Snitch. The SafeMode should take care of that, but do it nevertheless.
Your country setting in iPhoto Preferences > Advanced: Is the Print Products Store set to the country you are in? The same as Delivery address and Billing Address?
Have you reentered your billing address and delivery address at the Apple Store?
Check your AppleID settings and enable "Express Checkout" for your Apple ID directly at the Apple Store. You can do this right from this web page. Look at the black title bar at the top of this page. There is a Store menu to the left. Click it to open the page of the Apple Store. On the next page click the head icon to the left of the shopping cart to open the settings for your account. There you can enable the Express Checkout settings at the link "Update Express Checkout Settings".
Check your settings for date and time in the System preferences, also your location settings in System Preferences > Language&Region. your region should be set to Australia, if you are ordering from an Australian Store, as your forum name suggests.
One last thing -  sometimes the Apple Print Products Store is really not available for ordering.  Last year, for a few weeks, nobody could order print products from Australia.  If all fails, give the Australian Print Products Store a call - use the phone number on this page:  http://store.apple.com/au/help/print_products

  • Indesign and an iphoto book. Pano images.

I have designed a layout in InDesign that works with my flushmount album company. I had a book printed by Apple and I knew it wouldn't be perfect but I actually lost whole people in the gutter of the book. What dimensions do I need to make a spread that includes panoramic images that seamlessly go across both pages of an iphoto book?

What version of iPhoto are you using?  If it's iPhoto 11 then the themes now include a 2 page layout.  For earlier versions of iPhoto figure on two 8.5" x 11" pages for a single image 22 x 8.5".  This site has directions on creating such a 2 page layout: Creating a 2-page layout in iPhoto.

  • Making books without moving images

I want to Make a few books drawing on picture in various projects. I do not want to move the images and thought of putting the book folder type thing in a Smart folder but that is not possible. How can I make a book that taps into the entire set of projects using keywords to select the images and without moving the pictures themselves?
I tried several things but obviously not savy enough.... Thanks for any advise.

This question by tallphotoguy is very similar to yours - you might join forces.
After you studied the user Manual chapter that Kirby Krieger pointed to, you will see that your original plan to create a smart album is very good, if your images are distributed over many projects.
The key to success is to plan ahead and to define the criteria what you want in the book as rules:
Let's assume you want to make a book of wildlife pictures from the last 10 years:
You will have to tag all wildlife pictures with the keyword "wildlife"; then create a smart album with rules like: "rating is greater or equal *****"  and "keyword is wildlife" and add perhaps a rule for the date range and or the location.
Select the images in your smart album and then create the Book. It will contain references to all the images. But the images will not be moved from their containing projects.

  • Poor photograph image quality

First off, I am a hopeless newbie, so please treat me gently....
I am trying to put together a DVD which is a combination of DV and still images - using FCE4. Everything is working fine - I am happy with the video and the stills. The problem I face is when I attempt to emulate the Ken Burns effects on the stills: the image quality is just horrible.
Any truly still image looks fine but as soon as I attempt to pan or zoom them, the image quality drops amazingly. Initially I thought that perhaps it was to do with resolution of the images I was using, so I went back to the original RAW files and re-exported them as full resolution (12mp) JPGS. This didn't seem to make any difference at all.
Any clues as to what I am doing wrong (I am certain that it is me!) would be gratefully appreciated.
    Kind regards
    Simon

Exactly what do you mean by horrible quality ? Blurred ? Jittery ?
Remember that your high quality stills are going to look comparatively poor when put onto DV because they are going from maybe 3200x2400 down to around 768x576.
So a tremendous amount of detail is going to be lost.
The originals can be of much lower quality than 12 megapixels.
Are you looking at the effect on the computer monitor or on a TV lashed to your setup ? It is important to see what the video is like on an actual TV rather than your computer screen.
I don't know whether this tutorial will be of any use, but take a look :-

  • Can Photoshop or Lightroom utilize double-precision capable GPUs for photographic image editing.

Hello - I need to upgrade my graphics card.  Question can either Photoshop CS5 or Lightroom 5 utilize doubleprecision capable GPUs?  Thanks much for your help.
Background: Application- photographic RAW files editing (no video editing.) Software- Photoshop version CS5 and Lightroom version 4,  OS- windows 7 64bit, Hardware- Asus P8P67 Deluxe LGA 1155, Intel Core i5 2400 processor, 16GB SDRAM, SSD (apps/temp files), HD (archives), current videocard- Quatro FX 1500.

Let me start by saying I don't know what's inside the Mercury Graphics Engine.  Certainly Adobe has not published anything stating the thing would benefit from double precision.
Double precision increases the floating point word size from where it carries 24 bits of mantissa precision to 52 bits, if I'm not mistaken.  Since one each floating point number is used to represent red, green, and blue, even single precision floating point is going to give you all the accuracy of any document format.
From another perspective, your display only shows a maximum of 10 bits per channel -if you have 30 bit color.  Most don't; most have 24 bit color, or 8 bits per channel of display accuracy.
I honestly don't know why the graphics card designers created the really deep formats - perhaps for specific CAD software or because scientific computing needs acceleration of very accurate calculations.  I'm pretty sure Photoshop won't use it - at least not for a few versions yet.

  • Low budget image proofing for iPhoto book order

    Hello!
I want to prepare my photos the best I can for iPhoto book ordering (Christmas present for family).
I have a Dell U2711 attached to a Mac Mini running OS X 10.6.8 and iPhoto '11 9.2.1. and a Canon Selphy CP520 dye sub printer which I thought to use as a precheck of what my JPG sRGB images would look like when printed in a book.
    Here's my headache:
If I set up the monitor and calibrate the display profile as suggested in post #1 under this thread then such setup makes me color correct the photos by RADICALLY pushing the midtone slider in the levels adjustments to the left (brightening the picture). Prints that come out of the Selphy under this setup are a perfect match to what I see on the monitor and that is wonderful. However, I hesitate to order a book using such images because they appear far too bright on an iMac for example. (Perhaps I should mention that Google logo in Safari looks like its on steroids in this setup).
On the other hand, if I set up the monitor as it came from factory (PC gamma, standard preset), and use the default DELL U2711 display profile in SystemPreferences, then pictures look relatively ok on screen without any radical color correction. But prints that come out of Selphy with this setup don't match what is on the display, prints are too dark, and again I hesitate to order a book with such images.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.
    Mato

Yes - don't try so hard and use your Mac and iPhoto - not a PC
iPhoto is designed as a consumre level program for point and shoot comeras - many people (including me) report excellent results using it that way - load sRGB photos form a digital camera and do minimal processing on them - never do major color adjustments - using iPhoto - preview rthe book -
Before ordering your book preview it using this method - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040 - and save the resulting PDF for reference - the delivered book will match it.
    and order
Apples comments on this are here
Of the negative comments posted here nearly all of them were from people who spend lots of time and energy adjusting photos trying to second guess the printing process and failing to do so - Apple does have an unconditional sastisfaction guarentee - do it the simple way - less is more in this case
