Book on digital B&W? What makes a good B/W image?

I want to purchase a book on digital B/W photography. Ideally, it would contain information about how to take the quality of color images that are best edited into B/W. I would like information on how much contrast to look for when shooting, exposure pointers, and how to edit to B/W using Elements ( have PSE7).  I need pretty basic information, not super technical information that I wouldn't understand!  And, here's a basic question, "What makes a good B&W photograph?" Can you recommend a good online site or forum for B/W?

There are many ways to convert color to B&W. Newer versions of PSE have the Smart Brush which will do the trick (I don't know if PSE7 has it, I'm only on PSE2). For other methods, refer to past forum topic http://forums.adobe.com/message/2698012 where I give some examples in msg#4.  As to your question about what makes a good B&W, my only answer is that it is a matter of taste. In some cases a harsh contrast looks better, in other cases a soft looks better. There is no one "correct" answer.
You might also want to search this forum for "convert black white" for many more tips and methods.

  • Can anyne suggest a book on digital imaging for computer newbie?

    Hi,
i have a friend who's a great amateur photographer - he know's his digital cameras / what makes a good shot etc.
He's just bought a new Macbook pro to take his digital photography a step further, he's joined a photography club, and everyone around him is talking about photoshop.
At the photography club he was asked to prepare an image for projection - 72dpi 720x1024...
I thought i could explain, and go on to subjects like printing etc. I found it very hard.
There's loads of stuff on the web, but this is a computer newbie, as i say. So it would be great if there was a handy book out there that could help out.
    Any suggestions?
    Many thanks in advance,
    nw9

At the photography club he was asked to prepare an image for projection - 72dpi 720x1024...
If the image is for projection then the only specification he has to worry about is the dimension of the image, 1024 x 720. He just needs to crop/resize the image in Photoshop to 1024 x 720 pixels and save a copy. DPI does not come into play until you print an image. See The Myth of DPI .
I believe MacWorld offered several books on digital photography. You might search their site for them.

  • What's a good external keyboard for MBP

Given that the MBP keyboard is so inadequate and Apple is seemingly too stubborn to give us a good one, an external keyboard is mandatory. However, I'm not sure what's good in the Apple world. There is, of course, the Apple keyboards and I'm going to take a look, but there are also some from Logitech and others. Does anyone have any suggestions on good ones? I purchased the iHome IH-K236LS, but just looking at it and feeling it and seeing that it requires a power cord is not making me feel like it's a good purchase. Plus the mouse feels incredibly cheap. Like something from a kids toy. And it requires two of the three USB ports (but does add two on the keyboard). Anyway, I'm thinking I'd better check into other possibilities, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

People have such different views of what makes a "good" keyboard, GTGeek, that it is almost impossible to make suggestions without getting a better idea of what your requirements are.
I grew up using manual typrewiters (Olivetti Lettera 32's etc), migrated to IBM and Brother electrics, and then nearly 30 years of different computer and data terminal keyboards.
In the early years, perhaps not surprisingly, the closer a computer got to approximating that of an IBM golfball the happier I was. Few computer keyboards seemed to have the "feel" or travel that I was used to. Despite this i gradually found I adapted to almost all of them.
I still have many of my older computers and I often get a bit of a shock when I use them these days! My favourite in days gone by on a portable was on the NEC8021a, but today when I use it the keys seem too sculpted and to have too much travel (both features I once really liked about it!)
The keyboards on modern MBPs , of course, are at the opposite extreme - flat keys and little travel. The same goes for Apple's own current external keyboards. I now use them all the time, but if you don't like the keyboard on a current MBP I doubt you will want to yourself. The feel is very similar.
The older white Apple Bluetooth keyboards had more travel , and more sculpting and a nice feeling of "solidity", but can only be found second hand these days.
I personally like the Apple Pro wired keyboards in days gone by, but, as with the white bluetooth they are now history.
I have two Logitech wireless and and a Microsoft USB keyboard tucked away in the draw (together with just about every keyboard Apple have ever made) . The Logitech and MS ones feel very "plasticky" compared to Apple offerings, but, as I said, I have simply adapted to the latter over time. You might find them fine if that is what you are used to.
On Mac notebooks my favourites in the past were those on the PB1400, the PB 12 and the earlier models of the MBP, but I've adapted to the current MBP ones now as well.
All of which adds up to the fact that the only way to decide something like this is to test them yourself, and, perhaps, to be prepared for a period of adjustment whatever you get before you can really judge it. Familiarity breeds contempt, they say, but in the case of keyboards it has always seemed quite the opposite to me. What you have been using most in recent times always seems to be the best after a while!
    Cheers

You also may want to re-post in the iPhoto forum, someone there that uses the publishing functions may know the answer to your questions.

  • A recent Kobo book purchase does not show in the Adobe Digital Editions. What can I do pls?

A recent Kobo book purchase does not show in the Adobe Digital Editions. What can I do please?

Not sure if this is the issue in your case, but ...

There are lots of bugs in ADE2.0 (and 2.0.1).  Try replacing ADE2.0 with the older but more reliable v1.7.2.
(You can have them both installed at once if you like.)
Version 1.7.2, it is a little difficult to find, available on Adobe site for Windows and for Mac.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/digital-editions/kb/cant-install-digital-editions.html
The forum software is sometimes corrupting the link above.  There shouldn't be a blank in 'editio ns.html'.  The following redirects to the same page: http://tinyurl.com/diged172
Some people have found ADE trying to upgrade automatically.
It appears (not 100% sure) that if you install ADE2.0 as a new install (not as an upgrade) that your 1.7.2 will continue to run.
Probably best to say no if 2.0.x installation asks if you want to migrate your library.

  • I'm getting a copy error when moving books from Digital Editions to my kobo?  How do I fix this?

I'm getting the following error message when trying to move books from Digital Editions to my Kobo.  I get the green + sign and when I release my mouse this is what I get:  can anyone help

The response did not solve my problem whatsoever.  I can select an EPUB book from the library it goes into Digital Editions and every selection that I've make tells me it can't be copied.  There must be some setting that I'm missing but this has never happened before.  I had to reload Adobe since my laptop had issues.  I've been using Adobe and my Kobo for 3 years now without an issue.  I even tried downloading the free books that Adobe offers and got the same response.
It would actually be nice to speak to someone over the phone instead of having to communicate via this forum.  It's very frustrating.  PLEASE HELP to resolve this issue.

  • What's a good book for getting started?

I've been doing web design in HTML and ColdFusion for almost 3 years. It's clear that ColdFusion is on it's way out and I need to learn J2EE/Java/JSP etc. I have a few questions:
Java is a term I've heard associated with C++ and other types of programming as well as Web design. Are the Java/C++ Java and the Web Java basically the same type of language? Is the Web Java and JavaScript the same thing? I'm very confused!
What is a good book for getting these types of questions answered and getting started in J2EE/Java/JSP? There are quite a few variations of script languages out there and I want to make sure I learn the right stuff, ie the stuff that employers are going to be needing.
    Thanks!

Here is a free online version of a good book:
    http://pdf.coreservlets.com/Core-Servlets-and-JSP.pdf
Print it off or read from the screen. Otherwise, there are several good Java books out there. What I would do is go to the bookstore and thumb through a few books. Depending on what type of book you want (example based or theory) find the books that you think would satisfy your learning style. Write down the names and authors, go home and buy them used online at Amazon for tremendous discounts. This way you can buy several versus just one.

  • IPhoto Book in digital format

I'd like to create a Wedding Album 'Book' using iPhoto,
    Thats the easy bit,,,,
I'd like then to distribute this 'book' in digital form (file or cd) to my windows based family and friends
Is this in any way possible?
    1)Using iphoto or aperture?
2), Converting to a powerpoint file?
    3) If not can i do the whole thing in windows, can anyone recommend a similar program that will allow this.
I want to end up with an album, similar to what iPhoto can produce,,,, But viewable in Powerpoint or similar viewer that can be on a CD to send to friends and family
    Regards
    Glyn

    Thanks for that Larry,,,
Yes, it sort of works, The pdf version doesnt display the book/page formatting which is what i was really after.
so i end up with pretty much just a slideshow in pdf.
anyways, i'll work with it,,, maybe i can convert direct from iPhoto into PowerPoint somehow ?
    Thanks again

  • My boyfriend wants to play is mac book pro through our television. what do we need? i want to get this for him for x-mas

my boyfriend wants to play is mac book pro through our television. what do we need? i want to get this for him for x-mas

MiniDisplayPort-to-? adapter, available at Apple stores and Best Buy and antplace selling Apple.  Plugs into the Thunderbolt or "lightning bolt" port.
Replace ? with HDMI or VGA or DVI.
Know that TVs spave pixels further apart, for viewing at 10-15 ft instead of close as monitors do.  Makes viewing small text at 10 ft difficult sometimes.
Another poster also recently reported that using the mouse on the external display is "laggy".  Some models of Mac have only a graphics card integrated into the CPU (which can be challenged by running a big external TV) and some have a "discrete" or "second" graphics card that handles TVs better.

  • Mac Book Pro for school. What do I need?

Hi, i want to buy a mac book pro for school(grade 10 academic) and for general amusement. I will be doing graphics(got adobe cs5.5) video editing, word processing and surfing the web. I am leaning towards the 17" MBP but for portablility i may get the 15". Since i will be taking it to school i dont know if i should pick the solid state vs. the regular 500GB. My main questions are: What hard drive? What should i put in my bag along with some books and writing utensils? Does anti glare make a big diference? 2.2GHz or 2.3 GHz? What programs are a must have?
P.S. this is my first mac and i do not mind price so much i just want what makes sence. For example if there is no NEED for a solid state then i will not get it.

Why bring the discs with me? I agree on the chord but is it worth $80? Definately the Manual!
You need spare bootable copies for troubleshooting.  It's rare, but what are you going to do if at some point while away from home (where your original discs are) you start having problems?  You will have no DVDs to run AHT or even to run the repair disk option.
If you accidently delete an "Apple" app.  You need the Install DVD to custom install.
The above are just small examples of why you need to carry bootable copies.  The original DVDs should be kept in a safe place at home.
The System DVDs are machine specific.  Therefore, you cannot borrow someone elses system DVDs to troubleshoot your MBP.
I purchased an extra Magsafe to keep inside my computer carrying case.  I felt why should I use the "home" one?  I would be SOL if something happened to it while using it away from home.  My MBP is older than yours.  The Magsafe was no where near $80.

  • Crop Ratio Camera Raw / Scott Kelby Book for Digital Photographers

From the Book of Scot Kelby regarding the Camera Raw usage.
    - The Adobe® Photoshop® CS5 Book for Digital Photographers
Chapter 2. WWF Raw: The Essentials of Camera Raw > Cropping and Straightening
If you reopen your cropped photo again in Camera Raw, you’ll see the cropped version. To bring back the cropping border, just click on the Crop tool. To remove the cropping altogether, press the Esc or Delete (PC: Backspace) key on your keyboard (or choose Clear Crop from the Crop tool’s pop-up menu). If you want your photo cropped to an exact size (like 8×10″, 13×19″, etc.), choose Custom from the Crop tool’s pop-up menu to bring up the dialog you see here. You can choose to crop by inches, pixels, or centimeters.
In this topic Scott Kelby is explaining Crop Ratio for ACR 7.x
In this version there is the possibility for Crop Ratio to Inches, CM and Pixels. However with the Newer version this option is no longer available.
Hopefully this will safe some of you the time looking for this.

Precisely what Conrad Chavez says: a very good change.

  • Error messages while transfering library books on Digital Edition

My second laptop will not allow books to be transfered using Adobe Digital Edition. What is wrong with my download and how can I repair it.

Currently there is no adobe application that can convert a file which can be used in iPad, however, it will be soon be available. I think the following link might help you in answering your question.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/design/crossmedia_resources/ebooks_software.ht ml
This link talk about the application that can convert the file to epub format which can be used in various devices such as Sony eReader, nook, iPhone etc.
I hope this might be helpful to you.

  • I forgot my digital signature. What do i do?

I forgot my digital signature. What do i do?

If you mean that you forgot the password for your digital ID, there's nothing you can do apart from remembering it. If this was a self-signed certificate that you created in Acrobat/Reader, you can make another.

  • Error message in returning a book using Digital Editions

Recently I have been unable to return books through Digital Editions to the eLibrary when I've borrowed them.  I get the following error message:  E_BAD_LOAD_ID.  When I go into the eLibrary, it no longer shows the book as checked out to me, but in Digital Editions, the book remains in my library, even after it has expired.  Should I uninstall, and then reinstall?  If I do, will the books still in my library that I haven't read yet disappear from the library?
