Book Preview and Adjustments

This issue has been somewhat covered in other threads (see for example <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5397022>, <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5807886> and <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1263401&tstart=15>) but in the hope of sparing someone else a number of very frustrating days finalizing a book, here goes.
There is an apparent serious bug in iPhoto 7.1.1 that causes the creation of a book pdf to fail whether via Preview or Save as PDF. The failure mode is inconsistent, sometimes manifesting itself as a blank dialog box with only an OK button, and sometimes the pdf process seems to complete. But when the error occurs, some of the photos in the pdf are garbled or missing. (Clicking OK allows the pdf creation process to complete but photos are missing or garbled.)
The cause appears to be using the Adjust panel in the book mode to make final modifications to one or more photos. In my case I was doing final sharpening on some photos. The failure mode is intermittent. I have tried to reproduce the error using various test cases, but have not been successful. But when the error occurs, the only way to clear the problem is to remove the edited photos and rebuild the book pages that contained those photos. In my case, I deleted the affected pages, added in blank ones and added back the same photos - but without any book mode adjustments. You can make the adjustments in the photo browser edit mode. It may also be possible to simply reset the book mode adjustments, but I didn't try that.
The workaround for now is to do all your edits in the photo browser edit mode. Do not use the book mode Adjust panel.
I ran into this problem on a G4 iMac but in troubleshooting it, found that the problem also occurs on an Intel MacBook, so it is not hardware specific.

Have you reported it to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html?
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • No Text Appears in Book (Preview and in Book)

I just receive a Medium Soft Cover book from Apple and to my surprise there was no text present. I tried printing to pdf or previewing within iphoto and no text appears as well. My font sizes are all small. I even created a new book with a couple photos and used the default text - still no text in preview.
Someone suggested ditching the preferences file for iphoto as well as the cache. My fear in doing that is that the whole iphoto library gets reset...is there another way?
    help?

Go to your User/Library/Caches folder and look for a folder titled iPhoto. Drag it to the Trash. I will get recreated the next time iPhoto needs to create a cache file.

  • Font Book - after 10.5.2 update, font has no preview and doesn't work

Help me, this problem is driving me crazy!
I've done a clean install of Leopard 10.5.0 on my MacBook Pro, on an external firewire drive (I want to keep my Tiger install as is at the momement). I install the adobe postscript Type 1 font Carta, which is a map symbol font, in Font Book. Font Book shows the preview of the font, which looks fine. I download a fresh 10.5.2 update and install it, restart. Now in Font Book, no preview of the Carta font, the preview window is blank, or it shows whichever font was displayed before, ie if I click on Arial then on Carta, the preview of Arial remains. Double clicking on the font itself opens Font Book main window, but no preview. The Opentype version of this font does exactly the same thing. Font Book validates the fonts as being okay.
When it comes to applications, Word 2004 will display the font, but character spacing is all over the place. Indesign CS3 will display the first 96 characters correctly, but after that it puts in a 'missing font' highlighted space. Opening the font with Linotype FontXplorer, the preview shows the font, though it seems to be missing the 'Z' and 'z'. Character Palette shows all glyphs in the font correctly, but double clicking on any above the first 96 puts in a 'missing font' space in Indesign. The trouble is the characters I need to use are all above this point in the font! Basically, it seems that the OS update has changed the font mapping.
The Font Book preview problem doesn't just happen to Carta, it seems to happen on a number of other fonts, mostly symbol fonts, some that I've created using Fontographer. All work perfectly in OS9 and 10.4.11. Even more annoyingly, other colleagues with different Macs on 10.5.2 are having no problems. I have done all the usual voodoo of deleting font caches, rebuilding permissions, even gone back to the font CDs to get the originals, reinstalled, etc.
I have installed Leopard from 2 different DVDs, on two different intel machines (a MacBook Pro and a Mac Pro), and swapped the Firewire drive onto a G4 (I installed it so it would boot both the G4 and the MBP), and always the same result. I'm going to install an HD internally on the G4, install Leopard and see if the same thing happens.
    Anybody got any useful suggestions?

I'm slowly getting to a solution, or at least a reason, for this problem. It seems that Leopard has tighter requirements on fonts for the languages they support. The Carta info in Tiger looks like this:
    Whereas under Leopard it says:
Indonesian as the language under Leopard?! All the other fonts that I have problems with generally have NO language when I look at the info panel under Leopard AND Tiger. But Tiger seems to cope with them with my language set to British English. At least this may explain why the character encoding goes a bit crazy under Leopard.
Out of a peculiar sort of masochistic interest, I went through all of the default languages, plus a few others, that Leopard installs, seeing the effect of changing the language on the Font Book preview. I should just say that the Font Book Repertoire is always the same for all the languages, and the same info is displayed each time too. I'm now convinced it's the character mapping that changes when different languages are selected as the default.
    Font Book Repertoire:
All the following languages displayed the preview correctly: English, Francais, Deutsch, Espanol, Italiano, Portugues, Svenska, Norsk Bokmal, Dansk, Suomi.
    The preview looked like this:
The following languages showed the same behaviour as British English, in that NO preview showed, it would display the font preview of the previously selected font: Portugues (Portugal), Austalian English, Canadian English, US English, Espanol (Espana)
Changing to languages with different alphabets tended to show different things. Not sure if I've correctly identified the languages.
The two Chinese (I think) languages - AaBbCc characters only
    Japanese (I think) - a to m, A to M, numbers 1 to 0
Korean (I think) - two arrows usually mapped to singe and double quotation marks, and ABcdEFgh 1234567890 - see this image:
    Russian (I think) - 1234567890 ("*#%&@`)
Polski - This produced the most, dropping several characters from the main alphabet, but adding a load that usually map to ("*%&') - see below:
This all means that I have to stick with "English" as my Language, rather than "British English". I have yet to reinstall CS3, but I'll do this without changing the language, and hopefully CS3 with get the encoding correct.
Questions? Comments? Sorry about all the images.

I created a PDF of my book in Preview and encrypted it. When opened in Adobe Reader, it is rotated to the vertical position rather than the original landscape position. How do I fix this in Preview? I don’t want to hassle my buyers with rotating. There was no option in Preview to account for this automatic and unwanted rotation.

Then you rotate it and SAVE or SAVE AS and it will remain that way.

  • Preview and logging window in FCE 4.0 HD

    Hi Everyone,
    Just a quick question:
I'm learning FCE from the Diana Weynand book at the moment.
My problem is I don't see the Preview and Logging windows when I am capturing from my Canon XH A1s.
    I'm using FCE 4.0 HD.
    SL 10.6.8
    Canon XH A1s
    2008 24" iMac.
    Thanks in advance.
    Michael.

When capturing HDV with FCE you will only have a simplified capture window and clips will be broken at the shot changes after capture.
    This is normal.
Capturing DV will give you the Capture window with more features.

  • Book preview in PDF

    Hello!
I was wondering if there's a great way to automate or somehow easily undergo the process of creating a preview of a book?
    Much like this example: http://www.theideabook.org/pdf/Ideabook_preview.pdf
Is it really just a question of creating 2 pages side-by-side in (for instance) Illustrator, plug in the content, and then save the composed artboards as a PDF?
Or is there maybe a better way of accomplishing this task?
What I need to do is just to create a pdf document that appears like a book preview, with pages side by side (instead of the default downwards scroll direction).
    Thanks!

These are "readers spreads". Prepress shops will use imposition software, but frankly I'd say that this book preview is a bad idea. In Acrobat you can set a regular PDF to display as readers spreads, without any effort, and without messing up people's ability to print pages, etc. See under Document preferences for open options.

  • Change book size and cover

I have created a photo book with hardcover.  Now I would like to create and print the same book with softcover and smaller size.  Is this possible without re-creating the book?

select the book in the source pane on the left and duplicate it (command-D) and then click on the themes button and select the new size/style/theme  --  closely inspect the book to be sure it is still corrcect (text may reflow due to size changes as may photo arrangement) - preview (
Before ordering your book preview it using this method - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040 - and save the resulting PDF for reference - the delivered book will match it. ) and order if it is what you want

  • Robohelp 10 not wysiwig: Design pod vs. preview and output

Converting MSWord docx files to WebHelp w/RH10.
    Using imported CSS.
In the Design pod the output looks spaced as expected but in Preview (CTRL + W) or actual output, the spacing is all wrong. It is as though my CSS is not being enforced.
BUT then i select some paras and reapply the style from the Style drop down or S&F pod, and then the out put looks correct in the Preview and final output.
BUT I check the HTML code before and after reapplying the style to the paras and I see no difference. It just kind of magically makes the output look spaced correctly even even though I can see not code difference in the HTML.
I am converting books and cannot be highlighting every para to reapply styles ;-)
Please advise if anyone out there in RoboLand has a hint.
    Thanks!

When Rh imports, it creates a CSS for the topics created. If later in the process you are specifying a specifc CSS, things will go wrong as that CSS will have different style names. See Importing on my site. It's not a quick read but I think it will be the answer.

  • Aperture 3 book preview: Always WYSIWYG compared to the print?

I have found that the Aperture photo book previews of identical images differ significantly depending on the file type.  This came to my attention when I compared .jpg images to RAW images on the same page.  The reds and resulting skin tones were very different.  So I tried converting the same image to several different file types and the differences in the reds among them was quite a problem.  Meanwhile, in the Aperture viewer the different formats were almost indistinguishable. The worst shift between the preview and the viewer colors occurred for the Canon RAW format - major slide from red into orange.  I also tried .jpg (quality 10) and .psd (8 and 16 bit).  Their reds in the previews are also significantly different from the Aperture viewer in terms of saturation, brightness and contrast.  It doesn't matter whether onscreen proofing is on or off.  The 'red shift' also happens regardless of whether the monitor calibration is via Colormunki or the 'best fit' OS X eyeball calibration method.
So, what am I to believe?  The Aperture viewer or the book preview?  Or neither?  I'm not ordering all these expensive books until this is resolved.  FWIW, single prints from Apple based on the Canon RAW images are very far from the viewer appearance.  Their reds are muted and skin tones are sickly...
Any and all comments much appreciated!
    Frank in Minneapolis

Here is the 'not so happy' conclusion to this story.  After working with an Aperture support engineer I learned the following:
    1)  The print preview is the result of the particular color profile for the specific printer that will be used on each order, after it is applied to the submitted images.  So if one's monitor is calibrated then the preview image should be very representative of the printed image.
    2)  The hue shift that I see is particularly striking in pure reds that have an RGB green channel value of zero.  The printing color in the preview will consistently add green.  Blues in the same regions are variable, sometimes adding more blue and sometimes subtracting it, which worsens the hue shift.
    3)  This effect is independent of the computer submitting the image data - results were identical among 3 different macs.
    4)  Regarding the difference between image appearance in the Aperture viewer vs. the print preview - that DID vary among macs.  The best WYSIWYG performance (least difference) was on a new iMac calibrated by eye with the Apple utility, the worst was on my Mac Pro with video card upgrade and Dell Ultrasharp monitors, calibrated using colormunki.
    5)  You are welcome to take a look at the before-after difference as displayed in an online album.  It compares a .jpg made from the print preview to a .jpg made from a screen grab (using the Grab program).  Files had to be converted to .jpg format to upload.  On my rig they do show the issue.  Note my comments and you are also welcome to leave comments there.  The URL is:  http://opa.cig2.usa.canon.com/s/m/BhVjzDMZypG
    The password is: photoprint
    6)  In summary, the RAW image format is not as standardized as other more ubiquitous formats and each can be somewhat different.  So it remains to be seen whether Apple has time to fine-tune the application to all of the standards.  It may not make financial sense.  But until this is fixed, they will not receive any print business from me.

  • Iphoto book preview

Hi. I created an IPhoto book project, and I am ready to buy the book. However, before this, I tried the preview, and many pictures in the produced PDF are not good, i.e. with lot of lines inside, different colors, etc. , thus nothing to do with the real pictures in the project. Can I buy the book by uploading the pictures, even if the preview seems to be false?

    No.
Try boot into Safe Mode and try again.

  • Book printing and sharpening

    Hello,
I am currently building my first Aperture book. I am wondering what level of sharpening I should apply to my images. Or does the book printing process automatically apply some level of sharpening ?
    Thanks for sharing your experience,
    Pierre

I LOVE my books the quality for cost ratio is amazing - especially after the last update.
In my experience it seems that aperture applies some sort of smart resizing / sharpening depending on how the image is sized.
When you click the order button - aperture will generate the book and let you view the PDF before you actually click Confirm and pay - so you can look at your PDF and save a copy off with preview and do your own printing if you want to see how its sharpened -
Again, my experience has been that both the color profile and image sharpness has been optimized for the printing service internally.

  • Hi All, I recently bought a Mac Book Pro and transferred all my photos from my hard drive onto the Mac. I realised that there were some folders which didn't have the camera information embedded in the files and these files refuse to open on iPhoto. HELP!!

Hi All, I recently bought a Mac Book Pro and transferred all my photos from my hard drive onto the Mac. I realised that there were some folders which didn't have the camera information embedded in the files and these files refuse to open on iPhoto. I know that the folders that have the problem were not transferred to the hard drive via a photo transfer application (I have a Canon camera) but I simply copied them out of the photo card and onto my old PC.
Is there some way I can open these pictures on my Mac? They work fine on a PC.

    Thanks for your reply.
The files don't open in preview either. In preview I get the error message 'The file "xxxx_xxx.jpg" could not be opened. It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn't recognize'. The folders with these un-openable pictures do not even get imported into iPhoto. When I try to import them I get an error message about the files being unreadable.
The color profile information on the un-openable files is not visible but I see that all the other files from my old drive are RGB.

  • Text is missing in Book slideshow/book preview

    MacBookAir5,2
    iPhoto 11 version 9.4.1 (701.67)
    Software  OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
I created a book in iPhoto a week ago. iPhoto was upgraded in the middle of the book creation process. My book was converted by a new version of iBook to a new format. Now I do not see text from most pages in a slideshow/book preview, cannot find any correlation between missing and shown text (the same color/style/page pattern).
    1) Has anybody experienced the same problem?
    2) How to report the problem to the Apple tech support? (If any support exists for Mac users, I am a new to Apple)
    Will appreciate any advises,
    Sergey

I've got a similar problem as you described above.
I've got a book, which I have been working on a long time.
I'm finished now and want to order it, but unfortunately iPhoto pops up an error box saying that standard text won't be printed.
In the PDF the text is not there, but in iPhoto it is.
This is the case with just a couple of pages; other pages are fine.
So, iPhoto doesn't recognize it as text.
I googled a bit and someone said it had to do with a space before the text.
If you have a space in front of your text, then delete the space.
    Unfortunately, it didn't help me.
There were other solutions mentioned, but I found them too risky to try.
If someone has the solution, please let us know!
