Book Recommendation Needed re RAW and Lightroom

I use Lightroom but also use Photoshop for some additional touch up work...nothing major.
I work in RAW.
I have the Aaland and Kelby books on Lightroom but wonder whether I shouldn't also have a good reference on Camera RAW for CS3 available.
I'm looking at the Fraser book and the Aaland book as possibilities.
Any recommendations appreciated.
Thanks.
Mark

I've found book requirements are often in the eyes and needs of the end user. Photoshopnews posted a book roundup article at the end of the year that contains several good titles at http://photoshopnews.com/2007/12/21/a-book-roundup-of-2007 Hopefully the link works.
Specifically for Camera raw, my most worn book (at least until the latest version was released) was Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS2 by Bruce Fraser. Jeff Schewe completed the CS3 update sharing co-authoring credits with Bruce Fraser. It is my "go to" reference book for anything camera raw. It also has cross-applicability to LR.
Some of also learn visually. Michael Reichmann and Jeff Schewe filmed a multi-hour tutorial on LR 1.0 w/ a 1.1 update and they just completed shooting a tutorial on Camera Raw. The LR video is available at luminous-landscape.com and the camera RAW video is still in production--at least that's what the post at photoshopnews said. I found the video very informative and entertaining. Michael and Jeff play well off each other and have an obvious passion for what they're doing.
In the end, go to the bookstore, browse through some books and see if any of them discuss the things you're currently trying do with RAW and PS.

How do I install the RC updates to my PS CC, camera raw and Lightroom? I have downloaded the correct versions from the Lab site but I still can't open my Nikon D-610 RAW files. The site says follow on screen instructions but I have not found any. Help please.

Please ensure that for CC you have downloaded ACR 8.3 - CC:

Please extract the downloaded .zip file to Desktop and then run .exe file.
After successful installation try opening D610 files, This should work.

  • Two questions about Camera Raw and Lightroom

I am now shooting in RAW image format only and cataloging those images into Lightroom.
My first question is: How do I open an image in Camera Raw from Lightroom? When I right click on an image in Lightroom it gives me a choice to edit in > Photoshop, but does not offer the choice of editing in Camera Raw. In fact, when I go outside of Lightroom and just double-click on one of those RAW images, it opens in Photoshop. What is going on? Before I installed Lightroom, double-clicking on a RAW file would cause it to open in Camera RAW.
My second question is: Lightroom seems to have all of the same controls over processing a RAW image as the Camera Raw plug-in does. Does that mean I no longer need to open images in Camera Raw? Should I just do all of my adjustments inside of Lightroom? I take it that the sidecar xmp file is the same whether modified in Lightroom or in Camera Raw.
Pleas set me straight on this.
    Thank You,
    Ken

    Your second question:
My second question is: Lightroom seems to have all of the same controls over processing a RAW image as the Camera Raw plug-in does.
Answers your first. Lightroom and ACR share code, so the rendering you get from Lightroom with the same settings is exactly the same as in ACR. What happens is that when you say "edit in Photoshop", ACR gets called by Lightroom and the Develop settings get passed along. ACR then renders the RAW with those settings and opens it in Photoshop. So, because you already have a working interface to the settings, there is no point in showing them to you again.
Does that mean I no longer need to open images in Camera Raw? Should I just do all of my adjustments inside of Lightroom?
That depends on your workflow. I no longer open any images in ACR directly as Lightroom provides a more effective interface in my opinion. Other people I'm sure prefer the Bridge/ACR approach.
I take it that the sidecar xmp file is the same whether modified in Lightroom or in Camera Raw.
Lightroom does not modify the sidecars by default. All edits are stored in the database. This allows you to have virtual copies with different Develop settings and more tricks like that. You can have Lightroom write out xmp sidecars by choosing "save metadata to file" from the metadata menu in Library or by turning on automatic xmp file generation in preferences. There is usually no real point to doing that however as the "edit in Photoshop" route works just fine. It's only really useful when you have a mixed workflow that still uses Bridge. If you share images with others, you're better off exporting dngs, or exporting subsets of images as catalogs with the images included.

  • What is the best book to learn Photoshop CC and Lightroom? I'm a beginner and like a hard copy.

Just got Photoshop CC and Lightroom and want to learn to use it properly. Was thinking a manual would be the best way. There are so many available, what are your favorites?

Manuals tend to be dry and heavy going, and more suited to used as a references, rather than to be read in a linear fashion.  If you do want to go that way, the Missing Manual, and Bible series have been around for a long time, and I imagine they must contain heaps of info if the size of them is anything to go by.
The Scott Kelby books are a good choice for beginners, because he tries to introduce humour onto every page, which makes them easy to keep reading.
A good half way between the two choice are the Adobe Classroom in a Book series, which are laid out in a home learning fashion.
My best advice is to use Amazon, and read the Customer Reviews, so long as there are at least a dozen or so to give you good sample rate.

    Amazon.com: lightroom 5: Books

  • Java Book - Recommendations Needed.

Recommendations for a good BEGINNERS book please.

If you're completely new to programming then I'd suggest checking out some of the older books on first principles that they'll have available in your college library.
This kind of foundation will massively reduce the learning curve for any language.
Then hit the 2nd hand bookstores and find an earlier edition of one of the books mentioned above. All the marketing crap claiming that a new edition is completely updated is irrelevant to your needs. The core language has changed very little in about 6 years, (since the abortion that was the 1.0 event model was justifiably taken out behind the chemical sheds and shot), so anything 1.1 and onwards will suffice as long as you can get access to the errata pages on the web.
Of course, the best approach is simply to use the free resources on this and other sites because the programming manuals aren't overly useful to students entering the field for the first time. I say this because you'll probably be looking at two types of task:
    1) Practical programming (probably so simplistic that you'll be able to solve with reference to the API docs)
    2) Theoretical stuff (Better to look to academic books, trade journals, etc.)
    Try:

  • Have OMD EM5, need Camera Raw and PS Elements that work with this camer

I've been using PS Elements 9 on a MAC.  Can't use RAW.  Know I need a plug-in.  If I upgrade to PS 12, how do I find out what Camera Raw I need?  What is compatible with this camera (OMD EM5)?

Yes, you need at least PSE 11, but PSE 12 should work just fine. Download the trial and check it out.
Here's a list of the minimum versions of ACR for each camera model:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
PSE 12 comes with ACR 8 and can be updated to 8.5.

  • Adobe Camera RAW and Lightroom?

Can I  use Adobe Camera RAW in conjunction with Lightroom?

LR can send an image (or images) from LR to Photoshop by rendering them in ACR.
Sure, it can subcontract the job and passing images to HDR within PS is an Adobe-scripted example of that. However it is AFAICT an arbitrary design decision, that it must be ACR which  performs the conversion in these interactions; rather than (as various third-party utilities already do) getting LR to do this part via external files.
IOW, it is only on the basis that ACR is now expected to do, what we already know LR has the ability to do, that version incompatibility arises as a problem.
Let me explain: say I want to blend bracketed exposures together. I have a current version of LR but an older version of PS. The "Edit in.." options are therefore constrained; I cannot, as I could have done with say LR3.x and the same PS version, pass a bunch of images directly.
However, I do have the LR "plugin" (potentially misleading terminology IMO) LR/Enfuse installed. This lets me seamlessly select a bunch of images, interact with external processing which merges these into a single new image (in this case the interaction precedes the making of the rendered copies, but this could be in another order), and then view a resulting image auto-imported into the right place in my LR Catalog; and know that the extra intermediate files which this process requires (as the PS method does not) have been deleted for me.
This is functionally different but in its outcome, equivalent to what using Photomerge would have got me. The difference is that ACR incompatibility has been simply circumvented.
Might there not be an argument (inducements to upgrade PS for other reasons left aside) for Adobe facilitating the use of otherwise perfectly usable older PS versions together with LR, by this kind of route? Harnessing the two horses to the wagon separately, rather than under a single yoke? Providing a scripted "pass multiple images into Photoshop" LR export-based plugin, akin to what LR/Enfuse does?
I suspect there will be a lot of people who in the past have upgraded PS infrequently, and not planning to upgrade every single version going forward, who are currently re-considering their position about PS in view of the announced change of upgrade qualification.
Lightroom only gets stronger the more ways you can use it with other software, and while a "forced" upgrade of PS merely due to ACR considerations may be tolerated when ACR is central to your workflow, this is more likely to be resented when it is LR which is central, and the ACR question intrudes only peripherally. In that case people may settle unhappily  for some clunky workaround (toward which Adobe have simply been unhelpful, in their insistence on ACR parity as the sole solution).

  • Book recommendations needed

I was given the task of installing and maintain a RAC environment at my job. I was able to successfully get something set up but I have zero experience in anything Oracle, let alone doing something like RAC. I was looking to get 1 or 2 books to help get myself familiarized with the whole thing. I have ones on Oracle 11g but I'm realizing there is a whole other level of complexity when you introduce RAC. Can anyone suggest books? I was looking at the following two:
Oracle Database 10g Real Application Clusters Handbook Link
Oracle 11g Grid & Real Application Clusters Link

11g has new features and many enhancements and I would recommend you to go for 11g Book.
Oracle 11g Grid & Real Application Clusters
I highly recommend to go through Oracle Documentaion libraty.

  • Camera Raw CC and CS6 and Lightroom 5 Support for Canon SX60 Canon 7D Mark II

I have just bought my wife Canon SX60 and loaded pictures into Bridge and saw that Camera Raw does not recognize Canon SX60 CR2s. I checked the supported cameras and saw SX60 is not in the list. I will be purchasing a Canon 7D Mark II on Tuesday and see that it is also not supported. I saw in a forum post that the 7D is not in the current Camera 8.7 but will be part of the Camera Raw 8.7 "production release". I currently have Photoshop CC, Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 5 will both cameras be supported in the next "production version" of Camera Raw and Lightroom 5 and when is it scheduled for release (I saw some thoughts that it would be by the end of year but was hopefully we can get a more definitive date).
    Thanks

It has been indicated that both of those cameras will be supported in the final release of Camera Raw 8.7. But there is no announced release date. There never is. I assume it will be before December 31. But that is only my guess based on the fact that the release candidate expires then.

  • Camera raw vs Lightroom

Are Lightroom and Camera Raw synonymous? I have read a wonderful book on using Camera Raw and want to know if the tips in the book work in Lightroom?

    > I have read a wonderful book on using Camera Raw and want to know if the tips in the book work in Lightroom?
Only with respect to Lr's development module, and that would heavily depend on which versions you're speaking of.
Even then, Lr is much more than its development module and offers a much different workflow, while the text about ACR is more about the Bridge-ACR-Ps workflow.

  • Plugins and Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS6 beta

Yesterday I downloaded the CS6 beta of Photoshop. I then quickly uninstalled it because:
None of my plugins showed up in CS6
Lightroom 4 would only permit editing in CS6, nor CS5.
In other words, CS6 stalled my normal workflow and I couldn't see a way to fix it. So I didn't get any time to play with the beta. Is this what I should have expected with the beta? Or can I re-install and change some settings to permit Lightroom to use both or either CS5 and CS6 as external editors and to access my plugins from CS6? If that's possible, how do I do it? The new Photoshop has features I want to use but I need my plugins and Lightroom external editing connection to keep working.
    Thanks, Don

I just sucessfully integrated Topaz Adjust 5.0 by following the steps (for Windows) listed here:  http://topazlabs.com/support/kb/index.php?View=entry&EntryID=342
    3. If you are still unable to access Topaz after doing the steps above then please do the following:
Go to your preferences menu in Photoshop and select Plug-ins. Check / enable the Additional Plug-ins Folder option then click Choose. After that, please navigate to:
    For Mac :
Macintosh HD -> Library -> Application Support -> Topaz Labs -> Adjust -> Plug-ins and select the Adjust plug-in.
    For Windows:
    C: \ Program Files \ Topaz Labs \ Adjust \ Plug-ins and select the Adjust plug-in.
Then click save / OK to save this back to Photoshop. Back in Photoshop click OK to save your changes, then restart Photoshop. Once Photoshop opens, go to your Filter menu and you should be able to access Topaz.
Edit:    It seems that you can only add one additional plug-in folder using this method.   I may go back and try the other tips on that support page.
