Booklet SSD Wi-Fi Problem

Hello!
Finally I desided to upgrade my Booklet with an SSD. I bought KingSpec KSD-MS18.5-032MJ. After a tons of reading, especially in this forum, I managed to copy an image of the C:\ drive with acronis true image from the furstrating slow Toshiba HDD. After running system repair there was some non working programs, but the main problem is that when I start wireless, the booklet freezes after lets say 1 minute, and the only solution is to shut it down from the power button, and then power it up again. And before windows begins to boot have to hit fn+F10 to disable wireless, otherwise it freezes at the welcome screen. I downloaded different drivers, but nothing helped. Bluetooth by the way is working fine. I have an android phone, and now the booklet is connected to internet thru usb tethering. It has something with the drivers, but can't figure out what.
I really need help, or some clue why this is happening.
Sorry for my English, I'm from Bulgaria.

Hi,
Just bought the same unit on mwave, arrived after 2 days, which is reasonable. I must have been hitting the "buy now" button about the same time,
Just wondering how you went with the SSD upgrade. About to upgrade mine to a Samsung 840 250Gb, and was advised on another forum to use the recovery F4 option to create a USB boot media. Is this how you did it, and how did it go?

  • MacBook Pro mid 2009 HDD to a Kingston SSD SATA drive - Problems

    Hi
I own a MacBook Pro Mid 2009 and I'm running OSX Mavericks with Windows 8.1 Pro Bootcamp.  I wanted to upgrade to an SSD drive and after reading the great reviews on Amazon, I purchased a Kingston 240GB SSD 2.5" V300 SATA 3.
Many of the buyers had installed the SSD drive on Macbook Pro, including "mid 2009' models without any real problems but I've just spent the best part of 3 hours trying to install the drive but so far, it has not worked and the problem seems to be that, although the Acronis True Image software that comes with the drive to 'clone' the source drive and install it onto the destination drive (new SSD drive), I get a message which states, "WARNING:  After migration, the O/S will not be able to boot from the destination disk in the BIOS - If you want to boot from the destination disk after migration, you need to enable UEFI booting in your system and then restart".
During one of my first attempts to install the SSD drive, I removed the original HDD from the MBP and installed it in the supplied 2.5" caddy and and connected it to the MBP via the USB cable supplied then installed the new Kingston SSD SATA3 drive in the MBP, powered up and then rebooted.  The Acronis bootable software launched and after choosing 'clone disk', cose source and destination drives, I got a message saying:  "The selected disk will be migrated as is (disks layout will remain GPT)".  "After operation completion, operating systems will not boot from the destination disk in the BIOS".
My system has the latest available Boot ROM Version (MBP.00AC.B03 and the SMC Version is 1.47f2 and as far as I am aware, Apple computers have no BIOS that you can access like on Windows computers and instead use EFI instead.
Both drives had Extended Journaled GUID Partitions on them and what baffles me is that other buyers of these Kingston SSD SATA3 drives appear to have managed to install the SSD drive, but I've had to give up.
I would really like to get the SSD drive working but so far I've failed.  Any advice would be appreciated and I'll try it out before reluctantly returning the drive for refund.

    Hi
    Thanks for your reply.
Yes the Acronis software is Windows but I read through a lot of reviews on the Kingston SSD SATA 3 drives Amazon and from what I can gather, after removing the original drives and installing that in the 2.5" caddy and then installing the new SD drive in the Macbook, those buyers then used the software to boot from and clone the source drive to the new drive.
I'm not sure if I mentioned it in my first post, but I did use the Disk Utility in Mac OSX and erased, formatted and partitioned the drive and then pushed CMD + R at start up but I was not able to install a copy of the OS because the drive was not recognised.
I think I also used the disk utility in Windows and then tried again in OSX but no luck.  I'm no expert but as stated above, the issue seems to be that the SSD drive is not booable in the BIOS (or Mac equivalent).
The SSD drive is SATA 3 and I'm sure that the SATA ports are SATA 1 on my MBP and maybe that the problem Perhaps someone can confirm this.

I recently bought a new 30GB Corsair SSD, and it runs wonderfully. However, the device takes a considerably long time to initialize on boot (~30-45 seconds).

I haven't encountered this problem with any other drive I've put in there, so I'm guessing it must be SSD-related. Has anyone else experienced something similar, and could you point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Yes, I do. Healthy drives don't timeout on simple DMA initialization requests.

  • SSD Install - System Problems

I'm posting this hoping someone has an answer for my dilemma.
This weekend I installed a Samsung 256 SSD in my MB Pro unibody 15. I formatted the SSD with GUID and did a zero erase. I then installed OS X from the disc that came with my laptop three months ago. This had 10.5.5 on it. Once the install was completed and the computer re-booted I came to the migration screen. I selected the option to migrate my data from the old hard drive that I connected via a SATA docking device. This then transferred my user folder, applications, preferences etc to the new drive. I then ran Software Update and installed all the updates that were relevant.
I'm now experiencing frequent system hangs where I get the spinning beach ball. At first I thought it was related to Safari as it happens there a lot. But then this morning it's happened numerous times in the finder.
My feeling is the problem is related to the data migration. However, I dread the thought of wiping everything and re-installing as that took me quite some time to complete on Sunday. Any suggestions on how I might remedy this problem?

Dan, according to what I've been able to learn you should not be getting CRC errors. These errors mean there's a connection/transfer problem with the drive. I got over 2,000 of these after using my drive for 3 days. I had constant spinning beach balls. It would happen every 5 to 15 minutes and sometimes 5 times in 10 minutes. It was very aggravating. I contacted the person I bought the drive from and am returning it for replacement.
I did try checking the SATA connection and re-securing. This didn't solve my problem. I had originally used Super Duper to clone my HDD to the SSD and had the same problems. I then tried a wipe and re-install and migration assistant and the same problem. So quite obviously the drive I had was bad. I also had very slow write speeds compared to other benchmarks that I seen for the same drive.
I will see what happens with the replacement drive when it arrives. One thing for sure is that these SSD's aren't the be all end all that I thought they were. I've done lot's of research on them since I took delivery and there's lot's of problems with all the drives from what I can see.
Good luck with your's and keep us posted.

  • Windows 7/Boot Camp/SSD SATA3 install problems

    Hi there,
I just registered to this community having bought a MacBook Pro 17" on Friday. The aim was to immediately upgrade the stock 5400 rpm drive with 120 GB SSD SATA 3 drive.  I installed a brand-new Corsair Force Series 3 120gb SSD but that drive was not even recognized by the Install DVD disk utilities. So I gave up on that one. I then tried an OCZ Vertex 3 and that was recognised immediately. I managed to install Snow Leopard no problems. The problem came when I tried to install Windows 7 using Boot Camp. It's important that I can have access to Windows 7 more than OS X at the moment as I am mainly a Windows user. 12 hours later I still hadn't managed to install Windows 7 after numerous attempts. The various problems included Windows 7 unable to format the drive. Also when I did manage to install Windows 7 it never quite completed the install or would freeze on the starting Windows screen. I managed to get into the Windows 7 installation a couple of times but then the whole shebang would freeze when I tried to install the Boot Camp drivers. Upon rebooting I would not be able to boot back into the Windows partition again. I was rapidly losing the will to live. So I gave up on the OCZ SSD drive as well.
This morning as a last resort I installed an older Corsair Force Series 2 SSD 60 GB drive as an experiment. It was recognized immediately by the disk utilities unlike the Series 3 version and I managed to install Snow Leopard and Windows 7 via Boot Camp with zero problems. So it all up and running. Obviously the hard drive is much smaller than I wanted. But it proves one thing and that is that support of popular brands of SSD SATA 3 drives in the MacBook Pro 17" version is flaky to say the least and on the tests I did using two of these drives it was impossible to install Windows 7 using Boot Camp.
If anyone else has experienced similar problems I'll be interested to hear.
    Regards
    Kraznet

Oh yes, there are two flaky things to contend with here: the Corsair Force 3 120GB has had recall. I also have found the older 120GB didn't work properly on some motherboards and with older BIOS and Intel drivers.
    Questions:
This is hopefully not an electronic EDU/MSDN ISO of Windows that you burned wtih Apple Disk Utility?
primary Windows - forget Boot Camp Assistant - just boot from OS X DVD and change the SSD to Windows MBR partition table and FAT and then format in Windows. Me, I would have bought Windows 7 SP1 64-bit System Builder.
From a hardware review reposted to Amazon:
The Corsair Force Series 3 SSDs were announced just a few weeks ago - boasting SandForce SF-2281 controllers and a very aggressive price point. Just days after the first units started shipping, Corsair has issued a recall of the 120GB Force Series 3 SSDs. According to Corsair, the 120GB model is seeing, "a significant percentage of these drive do not operate to specification." What the failure is exactly isn't clear, Corsair is quick to deflect blame from their partners, simply stating that both hardware and firmware need to be fixed.
Buyers of the Force Series 3 SSD in the 120GB capacity can return the drive to Corsair for exchange - retailers are also accepting returns. The 60GB and 240GB models are not affected. For more information on how to exchange a defective drive, visit this thread [...] in the Corsair support forums.
I'm surprised anyone is selling the Force 3 120GB (though it is on Newegg it is not on Amazon since it was pulled)

  • HP 8510W and SSD low performance problem :(

    Hello,
i have HP 8510W with actual bios. Two days ago ive bougth SSD from SAMSUNG - pretty fast toy.
But - my HP doesnt work with it well - all transfers are very low Furthermore and havent found any option about AHPI/SATA/IDE option in my BIOS (there not much options).
WIN7 64bit ULTIMATE see my new HD (and give me 6.2 to 7.7 HD benchmark).
I did not found any clues on FORUM or hp.com what could cause this problem.
    Do you have any idea?
This is my BENCHMARK from SSD
    Do you have any ideas?
I have all actual drivers from manufacturers (more actual than all what i can find on hp.com).
    Thanks in advance

Maybe its just because maximum transfers you can achieve only with SATA 6Gbit port in your laptop.
From that reason i knew that my SSD will work not that fast - but my poor transfers shows me that there is something wrong with SSD...
I dont have any more ideas

  • Slow boot after installing SSD drive + Grub problem + Kernel panicks

    Hey
So i just got a Samsung 840 EVO, and was ready to see my system fly, so i installed Arch on it, the instalation was kinda weird, since im in the middle of some major developing for a startup i couldnt risk to lose time configuring my all system so what i did was this:
Install Arch on the SSD (/root on sdb1) while keeping my  other Arch install (/root on sda5) and sharing the /home and /swap (on sda6 and sda7) between both systems, i installed grub on sdb also because i didnt knew what to do
So now when i boot the laptop i get the grub from sda wich only has Old Arch and windows, if i press f9 at boot and boot from the ssd i go to sdb grub that has Old Arch, New Arch and Windows, since the SSD was instaled via a caddy it doesnt get recognized in the BIOS, but strangely i get 2 Universal Hard Drives (hdd and sdd) when pressing f9
So first question is, should i reeinstall grub on sda or is there a way to put the SDD as primary?
The other problem is that systemd-analyze is giving me worst times than with the hdd, and i dont see a huge improvement with the SSD as i should. Is it because i have /home /swap on the hdd? I have read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Solid_State_Drives and did as told.

You did not share what the kernel panic says, but I guess it has to do with your root file systems not mounted correctly. If it happens like 75% of the time, sounds like you are using /dev/sdax and it gets enumarated differently?  Use UUID's instead.
Your "slow boot" is a seperate problem, see the thread you linked too for how to fix that.
Its a fresh install but i alredy have DE and programs, i used Helmuth script to install all the stuff, just so i didnt forget to install stuff.
No idea what this means, but if it is some third party script downloaded off the internet - use them only if you understand exactly what it does, else the chances are you will run into some problems with no idea how you got there.  For simply keeping a list of packages to install, put them in a text file and pipe them into pacman (see also here.

  • Does partitioning SSD hold any problems

    Hi All,
I currently have a single 1TB drive on my ageing Mac Pro partitioned for my four boot drives, 10.6.8, 10.8.5 10.9.3 and Windows 7 with the other drive bays used for backup and data discs. I want to try and breath new life into the system and I want to know if there are any drawbacks to partioning an SSD. Also is there any problem running 10.6.8 on an SSD. I was thinking of using a 512 Gb SSD for my two most used boot drives, 10.6.8 and 10.8.5 and keeping the other boot partions on HDD. Are there wear or speed issues doing this. Would it be benificial to marry the SSD with a 1TB drive into a Fusion Drive and keep all the boot partitions there ?

That's a very interesting question because I think the answer gets under the hood of how SSD's work and differ from HD's.
I don't think there's any problem with partitioning per se, but there may be if there's any tinkering with the partitions after the fact (e.g., enlarging or deleting one). While HD's respect boundaries created by partitions, SSD's need to spread the wear around evenly among all the cells to prolong the SSD's life. That means that space outside the partitions is being used (such as the over-provisioning or intentionally unallocated space). And perhaps the space in a neighboring partition too.
So if you eventually decide to buy Apple's Snow Leopard Server (which is still available) and virtualize it so that you don't need the partition any more, and either erase and reuse it or expand the Mountain Lion partition into it, would that conflict with SSD's data structure? I've never tried it and don't plan to because of these concerns and with all the bays to work with in the "traditional" Mac Pro, reserving partitioning for big HD's seems a wise solution.
I haven't created a Fusion drive either and while Apple supports it, what it's supporting are its own Fusion drives. Consider that TRIM, which I think is essential for SSD operation, is only supported by default for Apple SSD's; it has to be turned on with third party software for third party SSD's.
Even if you got a Fusion drive to work now, an OS update or upgrade could quietly make it unusable. To wit: there is a bug in Disk Utility in ML and Mavericks which will create Logical Volume Groups on large HD's installed internally in Mac Pro's. And it'll turn a properly formatted HD (by DU in Snow Leopard or Lion) into a Logical Volume Group if you simply try to erase a partition with the intent to reuse it.
Which, BTW, is a good reason to keep that Snow Leopard partition alive and well.

  • Intel SSD 530 startup problems on ThinkPad W520 - Bug in SSD or lack of BIOS support?

The are problems with Intel SSD 530 and ThinkPad W520. Many people, including me, are complaining about startup problems ... see this thread also: https://communities.intel.com/thread/44258
One month ago I bought an Intel SSD 530 240GB to replace the stock HDD of my ThinkPad W520 (4270CTO). When I cold-start the laptop everything is fine, but when I restart it from Windows 7 or even CTRL-ALT-DEL, the drive is not found. Both SSD and W520 has the latest firmware/BIOS.
I had no problems with Intel SSD 335 240GB; Windows starts and restart without problem, but with the Intel 530 it fails when I do restart, the BIOS does not find it after a normal reset. I think BIOS implementation for W520 does not support the newer ATA feature called "Device Initiated Power Management (DIPM) for Software Setting Preservation (SSP)". There is a BIOS update for W530 but not for W520.
Should I assume Intel SSD 530 is and will remain incompatible with ThinkPad W520 or wait for a BIOS update?
    W520 | i7-2720QM | NV Quadro 2000M

I am also seeing the exact same issue. I have a ThinkPad W520 and a Corsair Force GS using a Sandforce 2200 series controller. According to the Intel SSD thread, there is some incompatibility between that controller and Intel QM77-chips which is causing the issue.
The symptoms for my laptop are the same. SSD is always recognized on cold boot, but effectively never on warm boot / restart. Will we get a BIOS update that fixes this?
I have dual boot configuration with both windows 8 and windows 7. The issue is happening regardless of what OS I issue the restart from.

  • Feb 2009 T500, SSD performance problems

I just bought an Intel X25-M 80GB drive (with the updated 8820 firmware) for read only database data files.  I installed an eSata ExpressCard 34 and put the drive in a Rosewill enclosure.  All of these items are rated at 3.0 Gb/s SATA speeds.  But, when I benchmarked the drive it flatlines at around 130 MB/s.  Oddly close to the SATA 1 or UDMA 6, so I looked into the device manager under "SCSI/Raid controllers" and found my SATALink controller.  It reads that the "Host Link Speed" is 3.0 Gb/s, but the current transfer mode is "Ultra DMA 6".  Is there a reason my new T500 laptop isn't able to run at the full speed of the ExpressCard?  I was looking forward to those 250 MB/s reads I've been reading about.

anti00Zero, thank you for your replies.  I have figured out what is going on with my situation.  It turns out that the SI processor chip on the eSata expressCard has a maximum throughput of 130 MB/s.  There is one other option that would provides a throughput of 200MB/s, but it costs $299.  It's not likely they will sell many of those cards, when one that provides 130 MB/s costs only $45.  In any event, I'll probably end up using the Intel X25 on my desktop because I dont want to have a $400 SSD go to waste at 130 MB/s.  Lenovo T500 is working great.

  • SSD Hard Drives problem?

OK here is what I heard: at a recent music pro's meet up I heard that 2 different people report some version of the info below. Then I called a mac tech pro, and he added 3 experiences more of the same in the last year.
So this seems scary and that SSD can be more prone to "bricking" than spindle drives.
THE INFO: If the power stops suddenly - as in power outage - or pulling the plug by accident etc. an SSD can get 'permanently bricked' with no ability of recovery. This was try for the 5 drives above. (BTW: there was no word on whether they were idle or running at the time...)
Curious to hear your experiences with this....

Yes, that is indeed possible due to the somewhat sensitive nature of all solid state devices. Note that the same can happen to spindle drives, but the odds of data loss from the spindle drive may be less if you consider whether the data are recoverable and not the cost of recovery. Note this same bad event could happen to your computer if you do the same thing and have no backup support. And, this is why you make backups.

  • After copying Arch to new SSD, KDE permission problems.

    Following instructions in this thread:https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=596228
    1. Boot a Ubuntu livecd
    2. mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/old
    3. mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/new
    4. cp -rav /mnt/old/* /mnt/new
    5. umount /mnt/old
    6. mount -o bind /dev /mnt/new/dev
    7. mount -t proc none /mnt/new/proc
    8. chroot /mnt/new /bin/bash
    ---1. grub-install /dev/sdb
    ---2. exit
    9. Exit and reboot
    And modifying /etc/fstab
My Archlinux boots fine but some problems occur:
    1. 20s delay for no reason after KDM login.
    2. No sleep option in leave menu or power management settings.
    3. networkmanager is running fine but kde plasma widget for it shows networkmanager is not running and asks me to start it.
    4. The battery monitor of KDE seems to lose access to power management and battery.
    5. cannot change settings in kde systemsettings--login screen.
I guess it is caused by some file copying permission problems or symbolic link problems. So how can I figure it out?

that's why you should use rsync -a and not cp.
