Bookmark as an Image

Hi,
I am making a PDF where chapters are marked with images. People can see the image somewhere else and can then look up the text that goes with
the image in the PDF. But there are a lot of chapters, so bookmarks are required. Unfortunately I can only add bookmarks which have text, not bookmarks that
use an image.
Would it be possible to use an image for a bookmark instead of just text?
So that people see the image, open the PDF and click on the image in the bookmark tab and go straight to the corresponding chapter.
Thanks!
Fabian

Can't you create Buttons then when in the properties for the button Use an image and use  the alst choice in the list (here the button is behind and the Text on top. Then have it go to speifified html page or or place in document you could have the text hidden. That way when you click the button you go to where you want.

HI Gerald and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
From the Safari Menu Bar click Bookmarks/Show All Bookmarks
If that doesn't help to go ~/Library/Safari and move the "Bookmarks.plist" file to the Trash and relaunch Safari. See if that helps.

  • Suddenly, My Safari 5 doesn't auto-complete at the same time "Search By Image" became useless . .

Since assigning where to post questions amongst the communities here as gotten more complicated, I've had a few questions go unanswered . .  unlike in the past . . .
But I'll give it another shot with this one :
A few days after Google brought back the black bar for "search, images, maps" etc., I tried to use my Bookmarked "Search By Image", which always started a series of drop-downs and led to choosing the image, and then working just peachy.
Now there's a grey-box to the right of the Google search-bar which does absolutely nothing !
Where to I indicate or paste the image now ??
The same day, entering in a regular Google search brings up no suggestions 2 or 3 letters in . .  or at no point till typing is complete and 'search' is clicked.
And now ?? . . . even coming here was snafooed by "Jive has detected Internet Explorer 6" ?!?
Retrying a moment later got me here, where a new line entered is suddenly being placed a paragraph above where I'm typing !
Seems like a whole bunch of goofy goin' on all of a sudden, no ?

    Hi ...
In case you are not aware, Apple no longer updates Safari for Snow Leopard >  Apple Kills Snow Leopard: OS X 10.6 No Longer Receives Security Updates
Thus your Mac does not provide anymore security updates for Snow Leopard.
You may want to consider upgrading to a newer OS X if your Mac qualifies.
As for the Google issue ... try emptying the cache and deleting cookies.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
Back to the menu bar click Safari > Reset Safari
    Select the following:
    Remove all website data
    and Clear History
    Click Reset.
Then quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • How can I change the icon for the bookmarks menu button

Using linux, the default icon for the bookmarks menu button is quite ugly. Is there a way to change the icon for the button with some code in userChrome.css ?

After several intents, I found a solution.
    This is my userChrome.css file:
    @namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul");
    toolbarbutton[class="toolbarbutton-1"]#bookmarks-menu-button image[class="toolbarbutton-icon"] {
    list-style-image: url("bookmark_gray.png") !important;
    -moz-image-region: rect(0px, 0px, 0px, 24px) !important;}
    Probably it's messy but works.

    Leaps beyond the ordinary...
Efficient code and buttery smooth animations make for a truly
    engaging
user experience. Slide Shows and individual images can be
    bookmarked and
all images can be viewed - even if JavaScript is disabled.
    Search Engine Friendly
Unlike many of today's Flash and AJAX applications, Slide
    Show Magic
markup is always fully visible and indexable by leading
    search engines.
    Auto-Choreographed Animation
Slide Show Magic detects the size of each incoming full-size
    image. If
it's the same size as the current image, the system will
    employ a smooth
cross-fader - simultaneously fading out the current image as
    the new one
fades in. If the incoming image is a different size than the
    current
one, the system will fade out the current image, glide the
    image
container to the size of the incoming image, then fade the
    new image in.
    It's all automatic.
    Staged preloader
When the slide show is running in automatic mode, the system
    will
preload the next image as the current one is being shown,
    providing a
    seamless experience in most cases.
    Intuitive toolbar controls
The on-page toolbar contains conventional media controls:
    First,
Previous, Play, Pause, Next, and Last buttons. It also
    contains a slider
bar that allows users to adjust the slide show timing, plus
    buttons to
toggle visibility of the thumbnail display and navigation
    menu, and an
    image counter.
    Drag-enabled thumbnail panel
The Thumbnail panel can be dragged about the screen, enabling
    users to
fine-tune the interface for best viewing of the show.
    Full-Size images can be hyperlinks
Each full-size image can optionally be set as a hyperlink to
    another
page, programmed to open in a new window or tab.
    Image descriptions
Each full-size image can display an optional description,
    which can
contain any type of valid markup (paragraphs, tables, DIVs,
    lists,
    links, or images).
    Automated image processing with Fireworks...
Web-ready images are automatically produced from your
    original images,
which can be located on any drive connected to your computer
    - including
drives mounted by your digital camera. Slide Show Magic
    handles all
image processing automatically - preserving your original
    files in their
original locations in their original and unaltered states.
    Your images
are scaled, optimized, and neatly organized into folders
    within your
    defined site.
    Import your existing images...
Point to a folder (or folders) that contain your existing
    full-size and
thumbnail image and Slide Show Magic will match them up and
    add them to
your slide show - unaltered and ready to view.
    Organize Images into sets
Slide Show Magic enables you to define logical image sets and
    organizes
the thumbnail panel into navigable sets.
    Mix landscape and portrait orientations
Your images are never distorted in any way. Original aspect
    ratios are
always preserved. Use both landscape and portrait images in
    the same
    slide show.
Deploy alone or inside existing layouts
Slide Show Magic can be inserted on a page by itself or
    inside an
    existing page.
    Select from 6 Themes
Select a dark toolbar, a light toolbar, shadow boxes (in 3
    sizes), or an
image rotator interface. Style themes can even be switched
    for existing
    slide shows.
Manage it all inside a dedicated Dreamweaver Interface
    Add (append) new images
    Delete images or re-order them
Manage Descriptions, links, and ALT text
Edit existing full-size or Thumbnail images
Reprocess all of your slide show's images

  • Adobe Acrobat 9 query

    Hi,
I have downloaded the trial of Acrobat 9 to test.
I have a folder of 3600+ greyscale jpg images which I converted to pdf using PDF Toolbox and Acrobat 7. The resulting files were 6MB over a full DVD. So I opened one of the larger files (50MB+) in Acrobat 7 and used the reduce file size function. This halved the file size.
Out of curiosity I ran all the files through Acrobat 9 using batch processing and the reduce file size function. The resulting pdf's amount to 250MB! I open some of the files and there is little difference between the large (acrobat 7) files and the smaller ones.
I also opened one of the files (50KB) and extracted the 2 pages as jpg images anly to find that each jpg was around 500KB.
How can the pdf be 50KB if the 2 images it contains are 500KB?
Also, does the standard version have the batch processing function like the Pro version?
    Thanks

If there is no OCR involved, I'm inclined to wonder why you would want to contain each individual image in a PDF anyway. What functionality is PDF bringing to the table for you?
Is it simply a matter of providing a browsing mechanism? If so, wouldn't it be simpler to just use a browser application? For example:
    1. Scan the images as grayscale TIFFs.
As others have explained, you are misreading your results if you think JPEG yields "better image quality" than TIFF. This is what's going on: JPEG is lossy compression. It throws away data by evaluating adjacent pixels. When it finds a range of contiguous pixels of similar value, it sets them all to the same value. Then it uses data compression to store the ranges of values.
So the reason you think JPEG is giving you "better" images is: contiguous areas of similar but different relatively light grayscale values are getting converted to white or light grays. In other words, the JPEG lossy conversion is effectively clipping and posterizing the light end of the grayscale range. The "improvement" you are seeing is just a happy accident, and is far less than the improvement you could likely gain by a better workflow that gives you better control.
To improve a batch of similar-quality grayscale scans of what should be line-art originals (that's what you have here), you need to do two things: Maximize the dynamic range, and then adjust the gamma (midpoint) to improve the contrast. In other words, you want the lightest areas to go all the way to white, the darkest areas to go all the way to black, and gray value that best describes the "edge" between black and white to go to 50%. Once you have done that, you can then convert the grayscale images to 1-bit images, in which all pixels are one of two values: White or black. The end result will be more legible and the data size will be much smaller. Then you can use lossless compression to further reduce the file size.
Depending upon the sophisication of the scanning sofware (and the undestanding of the user), all that
can be accomplished in the original scan with optimized settings. If the scanning software is crude, then the adjustment can be accomplished instead by batch-processing the images with Photoshop, applying a curve to the original grayscale TIFFs, optionally resampling, and then saving to the desired format.
    2. Now that the images are optimized and reasonably-sized files, you just need to deliver them in a browsable form. That brings me back to my original question. If no OCR is involved, then how are the images identified and organized? If they are to be identified by their file names, then I wonder if Acrobat is the best mechanism, since it's not really adding any value. Sure, you can open a folder full of individual images with Acrobat, converting each to individual PDFs, or combining them into a single PDF and/or further combining them into a PDF package. Doing so, Acrobat can give you a "table of contents" by generating bookmarks for each image.
But if no OCR is involved, how is the dumb list of bookmarks any better than simply browsing the file names on disk? Wouldn't you be better off with one of many image browsing/cataloging applications? For one example, consider these simple steps in FileMaker Pro:
    1. New database. Two fields: A text field named "FileName" and a container field named "Image".
    2. ImportRecords>From Folder. The import dialog lets you map the image files into the container field
as a link, and the file name into the text field.
    3. Bind the database as a standalone runtime application.
That's it. You're basically done. Now consider the versatility you have gained by using a proper database as a browser, instead of PDFs:
    - The title field is searchable any way the user wants. Rather than just being able to do dumb linear searches, he can do more intelligent searches using logical operators. (And, Or, Not, Greater Than, Less Than, etc.)
    - The found records can be sorted any way the the user wants.
    - You can add additional fields to add value to the solution. For example, add one or two or a whole series of fields that you or the end user can use to categorize the records. For example, suppose part of that un-OCR-able hand-written image is a signature. The user could, at his choice and convenience while browsing the material, key the signature names into a "Signer" field. Doing so, he would be continually improving the usablilty of the solution. Eventually, he would be able to do Finds and Sorts on the signature names. And so on.
Another alternative would be to use an HTML form as the browser. That could also be delivered on the disk along with the images, would be launchable in the user's web browser, and could also be customized for additional functionality.
I'm not knocking Acrobat or PDF. But if PDF isn't really being used to any value (such as its ability to quickly generate a full-text index from OCR content), and if all you are doing is browsing a bunch of images, you might want to consider other delivery mechanisms that yield more versatile and higher-quality results than what you have so far described.

  • Bugs in Safari 5.0.1

Safari 5.0.1 bugs on Windows XP SP3:
    - Bookmarks flash when you move the mouse to bookmark folders.
    - Images flash on screen as they are loading; looks like garbage on the screen until the image starts loading (random dots over the browser window).
    Anything you've noticed?

    Old bugs still exist:
    - Modal windows like Save File and Javascript windows don't get focus and the mouse has to be clicked on the title bar of the message before it takes effect. (The space bar works OK instead of clicking a button, and doesn't require I click on the dialog box title first.)
    - Backspace in Flash: doesn't work. The browser picks it up instead of sending it to Flash. Other keys seem to work fine (0-9,A-Z, etc)

  • Altering default user template in 10.6

    Hello,
Can anyone post explicit instructions for the simplest way of altering the default new user template in Snow Leopard? I need to alter the template so when a new account is created, it already has the bookmarks, settings, desktop image, etc that my office requires.
I'd prefer to do it Terminal because I'm guessing it will be a lot quicker than any GUI method (if there even is one). I've gotten conflicting information whether it's necessary to log in as root for this. Can it be done with sudo commands? I'm a relative UNIX noob, so explicit directions are appreciated!
    Thanks!

The only thing UNIX about it is to make sure you get all the permissions correct.
Run "sudo bash" to get a root shell. Then copy the folder "/System/Library/User Template" somewhere else so you can work on it. Change permissions on the COPY so that you can work on it. You could use the Finder or "chmod". After adjusting all the settings the way you want, copy it back, adjusting permissions to match the original.

When I click bookmarks in the Menu Bar, it leaves an image or "print" of the bookmark window on my desktop. It does not go away after exiting Firefox. The only way I can remove this image from my desktop is to restart my computer. It is becoming a bit annoying. I should mention that this problem does not occur when using the bookmarks icon in the Navigation Bar which I never use because I prefer the other. This has been happening in Firefox 4 to 7, but never in earlier versions.

There is probably a glitch in Firefox's graphics hardware acceleration feature, which was introduced in Firefox 4. To turn that feature off:
orange Firefox button ''or'' Tools menu > Options > Advanced
On the General mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"
This change should take effect after you restart Firefox.
If you miss (or think you will miss) the hardware acceleration feature, you could try updating the drivers for your graphics card to see whether that solves the glitch.
