Bookmark backup file saved as "file"...Can't restore

I have to reinstall Windows XP and before I did I backed up my bookmarks using the backup feature in firefox. Now that I'm getting things back in order, firefox won't allow me to restore that file because it's not saved as either the JSON or HTML. It's just listed as "file". I've tried to open it both ways and it won't allow me to. I opened the file in notepad and can see all of bookmarks I had. Is there anyway of getting the file I have to restore into firefox? I've tried searching for this problem but couldn't find anything that helped specificially.

If you ever need to restore your catalog after a computer crash or a change of PC, you start with the TLY file.

  • Can't access the bookmarks backup file I created on my external harddrive from my desktop to restore on my laptop.

I created a firefox bookmarks backup file from my desktop computer on my external USB hard drive so that I could transfer them to my laptop. I go to "organize bookmarks" on my laptop, choose "restore", "choose file", navigate to the external drive. All the regular folders display, but the backup bookmarks file does not display. It's there when I open the drive in windows explorer. Why isn't it there in the restore bookmarks window?

How is your external drive formatted? Use Disk Utility to check the volume format. If it is NTFS, you will need to reformat the HDD as exFAT in order to retain universal compatibility (RW to it on both Mac and Windows).

  • Difference(s) in usage of a ".json" bookmark backup file and a ".html" bookmark file

    Hello to all,
What is the difference between usage of a ".json" bookmark backup file and a ".html" bookmark file? It seems both of them are doing the same job. If it is the case, then why there are two options (.json and .html) for doing the same job? If not, then what is the reason behind availability of the two options and how do they differ? Although I've read all the related documentaion, it's not quite clear form me yet. Please be kind enough to elaborate on the question so that I can get a clear understanding of their right usage(s).
Thank you very much in advance for your time and expertise

  • Using Aurora - bookmarks backup files (json) include the word 'undefined' ??

At some point the automatic backup files began to include the word 'undefined' in the filename -- anybody know why??
    Example:
    bookmarks-2013-09-03_undefined.json
Manually-created backups are named in the normal format, e.g. "bookmarks-2013-09-03.json"
    Thanks/jim

Not sure what that _undefined is exactly, but the Aurora bookmark backup files are named different than Beta and current release versions are named. As near as I can tell the change came near or with the 08-22 Aurora update; one of my Aurora Profiles has '''_1411''' and the other has '''_7''' in the file name since 08-22 where yours says '''''_undefined'''''. My guess is that change is some sort of identifier for the Profile which generated the backup file.

if i have backup phone up to icloud can i restore factory setting without losing apps

    icloud backup and restore http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4859
you can always sync back your purchased apps via itunes or on the phone itself.

  • Restore to factory, failed backups, files can't be found etc etc - Win7?

    Multiple probs...
have got to the point that wondering if there is an iTunes/Win7 issue...
    Apple product: iPhone 3Gs 32GB*
    Computer OS: Win7
+* NB: Throughout all of these issues iTunes repeatedly showed capacity as only 4GB, then at some point would switch to partially showing correct capacity (ie. had diff information between.. capacity shown in summary details, and that shown in used/free space status bar), OR would switch to fully showing correct capacity info (ie. summary details and used/free status bar info would agree).+
    *ISSUE 1*
Orig issue - stopped being able to add music/video. Error message something like found folder where expected file.
    *ISSUE 2*
Backed up iPhone (backup appeared successful.
Restored phone to factory settings (appeared successful)
Tried to restore backup > iTunes error message "iTunes could not... because the backup session failed" *NB: Searched computer, found the location that iTunes saves backup, files ARE there, and checked all photos and contacts are there (just in format that will need to translate if need to access via non-iTunes means)*
    *ISSUE 3*
(Considered that might have been something wrong with my orig files, I decided to test with newly reset iPhone.)
Set up as new phone (as no choice).
Set up new music and added to phone (appeared successful; music visible on phone).
Repeated with more music; then started to get error message (for tracks that had orig been added successfully "The iPhone cannot be synced. The required file could not be found"
    *ISSUE 4*
Tried to reset again to factory.
Had to use the Hard Reset method (simultaneously hold power button & home button, til slide bar for power off. Powered off. With iTunes running, hold down home button as plug into computer. iTunes recognises, asks if wish to reset device. Say yes, proceed through entire process, including entering simcard lock code, looks successful. Phone then has the "connect to iTunes"image.
Did this repeatedly without success (always returned to be frozen on the connect to iTunes image. Tried all sorts of combinations - unplugging, rebooting pc, nothing worked... once phone got to this point every time it was plugged in iTunes froze, as soon as unplugged iTunes fully functional. Considered that iTunes might be processing slowly, so searched again... found webpage said to "Keep your device connected until the Connect to iTunes screen goes away or you see iPhone is activated." ref http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
So repeated factory restore, and at end left phone connected overnight and still no change (still displaying connect to iTunes image). In morning, still no progress (still showing connect to iTunes image).
    *ISSUE 5*
Happened to unplug phone, and replug into computer (not holding down home button or anything). iTunes then finally recognised phone. However, when tried to restore backup repeatedly still get error message "iTunes could not... because the backup session failed"
So unless set up as new phone again, am stuck.
    Back to ISSUE 2/3 status.
Expect that if go ahead with setting up as new phone again, will not be able to backup phone successfully, and at some stage will stop being able to add music etc.
    *ISSUE 6*
Have tried to go ahead with setting up new phone. Still no success.
Multiple error messages, most recent being
"The iPhone X cannot be synced. A folder was specified instead of a file."
Are there known problems with Windows 7? Or is this apple software issue? Apple hardware?<</div>
At this stage I no longer have a phone (it my phone for everywhere), or sanity buster for 15-20 hours/week commuting. Not particularly comfortable with that...

    Hi, thanks for your feedback.
No. None of music in iTunes synced. By "none of them showing probs"... Meant that iTunes can see all of those files, so no prob of that type; HOWEVER those files cannot be synced to iPhone. This is current status. Previously files HAD synced to iPhone.
Ie one of first things that did was to reset all to ensure that working with only small test sample to minimize room for corrupted files.
So situation is phone reset to factory; newly installed iTunes on new laptop, with new iPhone profile. In iTunes only small number of music files, that I've newly added to reduce chance that those files corrupted.
From all that reading, and from discussions having with few fellow developers/analysts at work, thoughts are that iTunes not playing nice with 62bit Win7.
Does anyone have contact with apple to have confirmed?
There are number threads even just in this forum, reflecting same thoughts
    Cheers

  • "An error occurred while restoring from the backup.Files can't be restored"

My 4 month old MacBook Pro 15" running 10.6.2 lobotomized itself and I had to have a new HD put in it. I backed up the old one w/ TM on an external HD. I've tried (by the book, and with direct verbal guidance from the Help People at Apple) to restore the system and files but every time it gets to 10.2% in the restoration process and then I get this message: "An error occurred while restoring from the backup. Please restart." and under the frozen progress bar is the chilling line: "Files can't be restored." I've tried restoring from several dates on the TM backup list but it always stops at 10.2% completion. Help!

    Hi.
Start by booting from your SL install disc, and selecting Utilities from the menubar, but before going on to +Restore System from Backups,+ instead select +Disk Utility.+
Make +*absolutely certain+* that your internal HD has the GUID *Partition Map Scheme* and the +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+ Format (unless you're sure it should be +Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, journaled).+
Then do a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on your Time Machine drive.
If that succeeds, quit Disk Utility, then continue with the full restore (per #14 in the FAQ).
But if that finds errors it can't fix, it's possible that +Disk Warrior+ can fix them. It's about $100, and is probably a good long-term investment, but there's no guarantee.
If all else fails, go back to Disk Utility and erase your internal HD, then install OSX. When your Mac restarts, use +Setup Assistant+ to transfer your users, apps, settings, and data from your backups (see #19 in the FAQ).
Then download and instal the "combo" update to get back to 10.6.2. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 (or http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1017 for 10.6.3).
Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility afterwards.

NO..log files are incremental and connected. If any log file is missing you cannot restore  to point which comes after backup which is lost or damaged.Like u miss 3 AM trn log backup now even if you have 6,9,12 AM trn log backups its of no use .

    Hi Rakesh,
In Analysis Services, if a backup file is encrypted, you must provide the password specified during backup before you can use that file to restore an Analysis Services database. In this scenario, unless you remember the password, otherwise you have to re-create
    a backup file.

  • Backup file won't restore on 5800

    hey
i have a nokia 5800 which i recently had some troubles with, all music wasn't working they were still on the phone but i couldn't play them and i tried all possible solutions that were suggested for this problem but it didn't work so i back-up all the information on my computer and formated my micro-sd, added all my music and updated to 50.0.005.C02.01 and it's working great even like the idea of the letters for the music library very much
but now the problem is i can't restore my contents are they somehow related to some files i deleted when i formated the memory card or something when i try to restore them the device always loosses the connection to the computer and i'm instructed by the software to rboot the dvice then reconnect but the same problem happens, so i reinstalled the pc-suite but now the pc-suite content copier doesn't see the back-up file.
am all out of ideas and can't find any solutions anywhere so if anyone could help that would be great

Do you still have the 4S? If not, there's nothing you can do, as the backup may very well be corrupt. If you still have the 4S, go to: iTunes>Preferences(under the Edit menu in Windows)>Devices...highlight & delete every backup listed here. Then plug your 4S in and create a new backup. See if you can restore this to your 5S.

  • Upgrading computer and PSE.  If I backup my catalogs in PSE6 can I restore with PSE12?

I am upgrading computer and PSE. Old computer XP.  New computer Win7 64 bit.   If I backup with PSE6 on the old machine, can I restore the catalog and images on the new computer with PSE12?  Or do I need to install PSE6 on the new machine, restore the backup, then start PSE12 and let it do the conversion?  Thanks.

You should be able to restore it in working order, providing an oops doesn't happen. If an oops happens, contact Microsoft to see if you can get your activation code from them.

And my second question, would it be best to stay at Snow Leopard for me, or should I upgrade my OS?
While Apple hasn't officially stated that they are no longer supporting Snow Leopard, it has been a long time since there was an OS update.
One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install Mavericks, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

  • Automatic bookmark backup: file size decreased

    FF version always most recent.
For several months, file size of automatic backup .json files used to be about 1.930 kb on all machines that are connected to 1 sync account. I never deleted more than a dozen of short term bookmarks. Since last monday, file size of all of them decreased to about 700 kb.
Does that indicate loss or damage?
If so, how to check and repair?

Note that compressed JSON backup have a .jsonlz4 file extension to distinguish them from uncompressed backups that have the .json file extension.
You can still create a normal uncompressed JSON backup manually in the Bookmarks Manager (Library) as the compressions is only used for automated backups.

  • Lost Bookmarks, backup files useless. Other options?

I use a (dilapidated) Mac, and a couple weeks or so ago I was having issues with the history while using Firefox (back button didn't work, most noticably). I remember finding a fix, something about renaming a file. Only now have I noticed that my extensive bookmark collection is kaput. As directed by Firefox troubleshooting and other Google searches, I attempted to restore from all of the dates on file in Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/~/bookmarkbackups, but none of them restored a single bookmark. Do I have any other options?

That's exactly what I did! I had renamed the old one "places.sqlite.old" as instructed. I now changed the old one to be the active file (regular name) and temporarily saved the newer "places.sqlite" as a different name for the moment. This puts me back in the same situation I had before, not able to view bookmarks or history. When I start Firefox, a red banner notification appears below the tab bar saying "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional because one of Firefox's files is in use by another application. Some security software can cause this problem."
I tried to run Firefox in safe mode, but I still get this error message. I'm a little lost from there on what to try.

  • Change in name of bookmark backups file - Normal?

There are several different files I back up from my Firefox profile every few weeks (Windows 7). One is the latest file from the bookmarkbackups sub-folder. In the past it has always looked like this:
    bookmarks-2014-07-27_801.json
But since upgrading from FF 30 to FF 31 on July 28, I have these:
    bookmarks-2014-07-28_801_CKxu2+MdJWqssiH1CHl1xg==.json
    bookmarks-2014-07-30_801_owugd2tkymMZxpZ-xAma8Q==.json
(not sure why there is no entry for 7-29)
Is this change, with the addition of all those extra characters, normal as of FF 31, or is there a problem?

Thanks for that detailed explanation cor-el. Very helpful!
