Bookmark Bar RSS Counts Broken after 5.1.4 upgrade

Ever since upgrading to 5.1.4 none of the RSS feeds saved in my bookmarks bar are reporting the new post counts properly.
New posts are not being shown in the bookmarks bar.
After clicking on a feed the count shows up, and then won't be dismissed no matter how many times it is viewed.
If I use "View All RSS Articles" for a folder it clears the bar count, but then all the individual feeds are still badged with a count that can't be dismissed.
Is there a fix for this, or do I have to revert to an older version and hope that the next Safari update will address this?
(and please, no alternate browser recommendations)

Hi,
Try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file  (preferences)
Quit Safari.
Go to ~/Library/Preferences
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari. If that helped, move the .plist file to the Trash. If not, move it back to the Preferences folder.
If that didn't work, go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Move the Cache.db file to the Trash. Quit then relaunch Safari to test.
~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder.

  • Bookmark bar RSS feeds randomly display only a drop shadow, no menu

Ok, I have an odd issue that just started occurring after an OS reload. When viewing my RSS feed pull-downs from the bookmark bar, they'll often-times open up 100% transparent, the only thing visible being the drop-shadow that surrounds it. The menu still works; I can still click things and it will bring up the page, but since I can't see what it is, I have no clue what I'm clicking. I can get it to be visible again by closing and re-opening the pull-down (sometimes takes a couple tries).
Nothing has changed with my browser profile since I last reloaded windows. I reloaded Windows (7 64-bit) once because my secondary HDD controller crashed on me and I reloaded windows thinking there was a faulty driver stuck in the OS (that and to get rid of the extra junk from the past several years), but later found the motherboard was going bad, so I replaced it and reloaded again (primary is 2x SSD Raid 0). I'm now running that second reload and loaded my profile the same way as before and I'm getting the issue.
To save and load the profile I did the following: FireFox menu > Help > Troubleshooting Information > Show Folder (Profile folder) then closed FF and copied the entire contents of the folder to a backup directory. Reloading the profile was the same process but copying the files back to the profile folder after closing FF. I did this on the first reload as well and had no issues, but for some reason I'm running into it now. Seems to occur more during heavy file transfer loads (such as copying from USB HDD to SSD raid). Not actually sure if that's related or not though.
Anyway, any ideas why this might be occurring?

  • Remote Desktop 2.2 broken after 10.4.6 upgrade

I can't remotely control 10.4.6 clients (PPC). All I get is mainly a black screen and sometimes slight "static" where there're text input boxes. I've been able to replicate this twice. I can see a 10.4.5 client perfectly, then after upgrading the client to 10.4.6, I get the problem.
I'm running the admin program on a 10.4.6 Powerbook G4.

Please re-Update using the downloaded Combination updater. (Apple downloads)
If that doesn't help, the only other thing I can recommend is to resinstall OS X using the archive & install option in the installer.

  • Finder sidebar broken after 10.5.6 upgrade

    Hallo everyone
After upgrading my MacPro using the full combo update, I have the following problem with the Finder:
If you collapse all disclosure triangles on the sidebar and expnad them again, the display of all icons and labels is completly messed up.
Labels are overlapping and clicking does break the highlighted rows.
Can somebody confirm they have the same issue?
    Thanks
    Patrick

    Patrick,
You may want to refresh the Sidebar plist file by dragging the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist file which is located in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences folder to the Desktop. Then log out/in or restart and confirm your settings in Finder>Preferences...>Sidebar

Those lite gray navigation bars on the top and bottom of Safari will not disappear once a web page is loaded. They used to pre 1.1.1 upgrade. Anyone else experiance this?

If you mean the navigation bars, I believe they never disappeared before the update.

  • Time Machine broken after 10.6 server upgrade

I recently upgraded our Mac Pro running 10.5 Leopard server to 10.6 Snow Leopard server, I just popped the disk in and ran the installer. The upgrade seemed to go fine, this is just a file server, and everything seems to function just as it had in OS 10.5, except for Time Machine. TM did not pickup where it left off with the internal TM drive for the server (not entirely unexpected). With no luck I've tried:
Erasing and repartitioning the drive (after turning TM off and deleting the preference file)
Removing the drive and erasing and partitioning on another computer, then trying TM through a USB connection (after turning TM off and deleting the preference file)
Below is the common error dialog and part of a log file. If I were to remove the folder/file listed in the log next time it would just be another file. What is consistent is that it doesn't seem to like what's in the Shared Items folder (the sharepoints users attach to).
Can anyone tell me how I might fix this?

I deleted the newly created sparsebundle. I also realized that the computer name had been changed and I changed it back to the original one. Here's the new problem. The TM says that I only have 127 GB and the amount of space needed to back up the disk is 140GB. I don't understand. It almost seems like it is trying to duplicate the entire backup. And this time around, I don't even see any new sparsebundle. I am stuck here.
Something caused TM to decide to start a new "sequence" of backups, as if you'd gotten a new Mac. That means a new, full backup to start with. The only thing that seems to have worked for some folks is a Restart. So if you haven't done one since the latest changes and failed backup attempt, it's worth a try.
If it still wants to do a full backup, you can't prevent it.
Depending on how much space you have on the TM drive/partition, your only choice may be to delete the "old" sparse bundle and let TM start over.
You may be able to delete some of the older backups to make room for the new, full backup, but that's tedious and time-consuming (see item #12 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip.)*
But that still leaves two problems: you'll have to manually "compact" the sparse bundle via Terminal to shrink it; and you'll have to continue to delete old backups this way (and manually compact them) to make room for new ones. Since TM is treating them as if they were from a different Mac, it won't delete them automatically, but will delete the oldest backups from the new set instead.

  • Safari 3: RSS Count in Bookmark Bar not updating

    Hello
My only issue so far since updating to Leopard (I think I've escaped lightly after reading some of the other posts!) is that the RSS Feed Count does not always update in the Bookmark Bar once I've read the feeds.
Refreshing the page or selecting "View all RSS articles" doesn't seem to fix the issue - but quitting Safari and restarting does fix it.
Has anyone else come across this or know how to fix it?
    Tom

My RSS count seems to have resolved itself - it could just be coincidence, but I removed all the feeds I also had in Mail as well as Safari (the novelty wore off!) so now they are only in one place on my system - the bookmarks bar - and it no longer seems to get confused.
Those who also had this problem - were those same feeds in Mail too, and does it resolve itself if you delete them from Mail?

  • Can you remove the "View All RSS Articles" and Counter in Bookmarks Bar?

Hi There. I have a folder/drop down menus called "MyMix" in the Bookmarks Bar with several subfolders of pages I like to visit regularly. It's a silly thing but I get tired of the climbing counter of RSS articles in parentheses that sits next to it. Is there anyway to remove that functionality? I have a few other drop down menus that don't have the same problem, so not sure why this one does it. I've tried copying the folder and taking out each individual subfolder but it still keeps the RSS counter and "View All RSS Articles" link in there.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Awesome, thank you. I should've checked preferences myself. Duh.
Still curious as to why it chose that folder instead of the other one's I have to display the RSS updates but I guess that will remain a mystery.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Unread RSS feeds incorrect in Bookmarks bar

Since moving to 10.5 the RSS feed counts in the bookmarks bar is often incorrect. I can read each feed in the pulldown menu and all the numbers for unread feeds are gone in the pulldown, yet, in the bookmarks bar it will say 1, 2, or 3 still to be read.
To clear that number, I select View All RSS Articles, and the number sets to blank. Also, clicking on a feed that I have read and cleared will often clear the unread number to show nothing.
This does not happen every time, but usually at least once a day.

Update to the unread RSS count:
I have discovered that different RSS feeds sometimes do not show that that there are unread feeds. When I go to reading all RSS feed options, I have looked and find what are the unreads. It is always a feed that had not shown it had unread entries when I opened Safari. It seems to usually occur in the first 4 of the 19 feeds in the menu bar. I can go several days with no problems, then other days it happens almost every time I look.

  • Bookmarks Bar Can't Do RSS Feed Maths!

    Hi,
In my Bookmarks Bar I have a folder called RSS Feeds. Within that I have 6 sub-folders. Each folder contains bookmarks to RSS feeds. The problem I'm having is that Safari isn't particuarly accurate at adding up my unread RSS feed items count. For example, right now it says (2) on the Bookmarks Bar, and it says (2) next to one of the sub-folders, which is good. But then, inside that sub-folder, there is no (2) or (1)s next to any of the feeds I've subscribed to.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is it just a fact that you shouldn't use nested folders for RSS feeds?

A good solution to this problem is actually to use NetNewsWire instead of Safari's RSS reader.
NetNewsWire is an excellent free Mac OS X RSS reader. I'm really satisfied with it. Now I get an accurate unread count in the Dock (I know Mail can do that). But the best part is that it auto syncs my RSS feeds with NewsGator online, meaning that if I read RSS feeds on my iPod Touch, my iMac knows about, and vice-versa.

  • After IOS 8 update, bookmark bar won't go away

After upgrading to IOS 8 on my iPad 2, in landscape mode in Safari, the bookmarks bar, now combined with links and "Reading List", won't go away. I believe it is supposed to go away when you select one of the functions, such as bookmark, so that the tab turns blue, then hit it again. It doesn't. I can turn it to portrait mode to make it go away, but I'd like to use landscape mode without losing a third of the screen to bookmarks.

Apple knows what's good for you - how dare you criticizing their benevolent parental guidance?
Jokes aside, I'm also a little bit puzzled that there's no option to choose between the "toggle on-off" setting in landscape mode and the fade out one as in portrait In Safari's settings. But there's actually some kind of workaround I'm now using most of the time in landscape mode:
When tapping the URL address bar your bookmarks will also show above the virtual keyboard as they do when Safari doesn't have any websites opened. As soon as one taps into that bookmark window to scroll or directly click a bookmark the keyboard disappears again. It may not be a perfect method, especially when bookmarks aren't organized in folders, because the top level bookmarks are displayed as rather largish icons. But those contained in a folder will actually display as a drop-down list (can be scrolled when having a large number of entries) similar to the normal bookmarks list. Once a bookmark has been clicked everything fades out and you're taken to the selected site. As my bookmarks are almost exclusively in folders such as "News", "Sports", "Tech" etc. I've come to appreciate this kind of bookmark navigation much more than through the standard bookmarks menu with its annoying behavior in landscape mode.

  • How do I get the number of new RSS articles to show in the bookmark bar?

I have Apple as one of my Bookmarks in my Bookmark bar. On my eMac at school, whenever there was a new Apple Hot News article, I would get a number next to my Apple that would let me know there was new Apple News. I can't figure out how to set that up on my new MacBook so I know when new Apple News is posted. What do I need to do to show the number of new articles in my Bookmark Bar?
    Thom

Thanks. I thought that was all I had to do and thought I had the Bookmark Bar checked off to alert me. I just checked my preferences again and it wasn't checked off. I guess now I just wait.
Is there anything specific I need to do for the Apple Hot News site? Do I need to subscribe to the RSS feed or anything like that?

  • Bookmark bar and menu stop working after awhile on Firefox 12

I have upgraded to Firefox 12. Everything works fine when I start up Firefox, but after some amount of use (and I can't always reproduce this) eventually when I click on bookmarks in my Bookmark Bar or from the Bookmark menu, nothing happens. Firefox doesn't load the bookmark. If I open the "Show All Bookmarks" window and click on bookmarks there, they load fine and then the menu and bookmark bar suddenly start working again. If I close the "Show All Bookmarks" window the Bookmark Bar and menu stop working again.

    Hi ischou,
I haven't heard of this particular issue, but you might want to try starting Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. Let is sit for a while as you described above and if you don't have the issue while all of your add-ons, extensions, and themes are disabled, you can try adding them back in one by one until you find the culprit. You should look at the [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting-extensions-themes Extensions and Themes troubleshooting guide ] and the [[Troubleshooting plugins]] article as well.
You could also try [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Managing-profiles?s=create+a+new+profile&r=2&e=es&as=s#w_creating-a-profile Creating a new profile].
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Bookmarks get changed randomly / Bookmarks Bar does not stay showing after reboot

This is a brand new installation of FireFox 17.0.1 download directly from Mozilla. The previous installation was completely removed using Revo in an attempt to find the cause of this problem.
I have my bookmarks saved to a .json file so after full installation of FireFox, I rebooted the computer, came back into FireFox, enabled the Bookmarks Bar and imported my Bookmarks. Looks good so far. Then I shut it down and rebooted the computer. The bookmarks are gone, the FireFox size is back to default, and the Bookmarks bar is no longer showing.
In my previous installation, sometimes the bookmarks were there, sometimes they weren't. But even when they were, the actual URL that the bookmark was supposed to go to had been changed to some site that was opened at some point during the previous session (but not bookmarked).
The same types of problem do not occur in Opera, Safari, Chrome, or IE so I don't believe it is anything interfering with the saving of customizations.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Bookmarks shouldn't have been changing by themselves. Your places database (which stores history and bookmarks together) might have been corrupted. Your new installation should not have that problem, at least not right out of the box.
Sometimes Windows permissions, files in use, or other factors can cause Firefox to lose changes or start up incorrectly. This article might help: [[How to fix preferences that won't save]].
Are you just running the standard release of Firefox directly on Windows? In other words, I assume:
    * It's not the "Portable" edition of Firefox.
    * You are not using sandboxing or virtualization software that isolates Firefox from the system.
