Bookmark import after erase/install

I have just done an erase and install of OS X 10.2.8 with re-install of Safari 1.0.3 on my iBook. Prior to erasing my hard drive I made a copy of my bookmarks (from Home/Library/Safari) which I saved to CDRW. This document is titled "Bookmarks copy.plist." I have copied this file from the CD to the new Safari folder in Library which also contains a file called "Bookmarks.plist." The bookmarks from the copy do not show up when I check Show All Bookmarks. So, how do I import the bookmarks from "Bookmarks copy.plist" into the reinstalled Safari?

Hello Jonathan,
First of all, welcome to the Apple discussions.
* Did you try to rename the "Bookmarks copy.plist" to Bookmark.plist?
Before you do this, drag the Bookmark.plist out of the Safari Folder, than drag the "Bookmark copy.plist into the Safari folder select it twice an rename it.
* Now restart Safari
Let me know if so ...
Discussions is a ongoing process. Hope to see you around anytime you need us, or can offer help to others.

  • HELP!  Stuck in a Loop after Erase & Install Tiger 10.4

    Here's what happened:
My old G4 PPC PowerMac suddenly started running everything (including on startup) very slowly. A weird sound was coming from the HD? (not sure) but it sounded like it was constantly doing something. The sound was a regular: chik, chik, chik...glikglik.
*Did a Verify for Disk Permissions & HD Volume, found a load of problems & tried to fix from my Tiger CD/DVD Install disc on startup.
*No luck...as there was an "Incorrect number of thread records" & Volume could not be fixed.
    *Backedup everything onto external HD
*Did Erase & Install Tiger 10.4
*Everything seemed fine (the weird sound stopped) so I started installing all standard Updates- Java etc & my iTunes music.
*Weird sound returned but not as constant, so I did a Verify & fixed Disk Permissions and HD Volume from my Tiger CD/DVD Install disc on startup again. Successful this time. Volume was fine.
*Used Onyx to do verify Volume. Volume fine.
    [Bare with me;)]
*Started to import all my backup files. The weird sound returned with a vengence! Argh! Everything slowed down even worst than before.
*Decided to Erase & Install again. Done, but now I'm stuck in the Welcome to Tiger loop: Welcome Tiger animation which crashes halfway through, then takes me to settings for language, location, Mac sign in...loops back again to Welcome.
I am a complete dummy when it comes to computers, so have tried to follow instructions/advice to the T. I don't have a clue what is going on. Please anyone out there, help!

Best to ask about hardware questions on the appropriate hardware forum. That said...
Unless for some reason you want to keep hold of an old computer for specific features not present in a newer computer it is almost always cheaper to buy a newer used computer rather than upgrade hardware in an old one. Since you're talking upgrading multiple features that is almost certain.
A consideration: Snow Leopard is now out. This is pushing pre-Intel Macs towards into obsolescence. I already see a number of software vendors who say they do not support Tiger any more. Some may soon start saying they no longer support pre-Intel Macs. Although I find my G4 and Tiger to still be perfectly usable, if my G4 were to die today and I was interested in a used computer I might seriously look at a used Intel Mac. There's a bit of a jump at the PPC + Tiger to Intel + Leopard-plus boundary and it will become more noticeable soon. If you can afford it I would suggest not being more than one big generation behind in terms of software and hardware, and in this case maybe not even one major generation in terms of hardware. To summarize, if it were me I would be looking for a used early Intel Mac running Leopard currently so I could ensure there still being support for the next few years.

  • OS won't load after Erase & Install

my computer decided to take a crap the other day, and after trying to restart a few times, only to have it just stop on a blue screen, i decided to re-insall the OS. I tried doing an archive and install first, but both times i got a message saying that there was an error and i shouldl try again. I then decided to do an erase and install, and it gets through the installation process with disc 1, but without asking for disc 2, it restarts, only to stop on the gray apple screen for about 10 minutes, at which point it restarts again and gets stuck in this loop. If i catch it at a restart point, i can boot from the disc again, but then i'm back at the install screen. Trying to quit the installer and change the boot disk to the internal drive ends up back in that loop, so there's obvioulsy an issue with the installation not being completed correctly.
This is the second time i've tried the Erase & Install with no success and the same result. Any thoughts? Perhaps it would work if i installed it on another drive? i have one coming in a few says...
    thanks

What computer model are you installing on? Are you trying to install Tiger or Leopard? Have you tried re-prepping the drive?
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.)Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Fan makes noise, even after erase-install?

I have an iMac running tiger 4.5. The other day, I had kind of a bluescreen-scenario while to find a USB memory-plug on the desktop. The macine wouldn´t restart properly, not even in Safe Mode. While trying this, the fan started roaring, and never stopped.
I started the iMac up as a firewire-item, which allowed me to make a backup of important files. Then i booted from install disks, running disk repair on Disk Utility until it said no repairs necessary. That didn´t help my startup issue, and the fans were still going. Tried archive install, didn´t help either. Finally, did erase install. The iMac then started up with a "brand new" desktop - but the fans are still noisy like an airplane from the second I push the startbutton.
Called Apple Support, they suggested the running fan was a hardware thing, but I find that hard to believe, as the fan-problem occured while I was solving what I found to be a software issue. Any suggestions on this one, or should I bring the machine to professionals right away?

Have you tried running hardware test?
(Install DVD/CD...hold option key as mac restarts)
...Just to rule out the possibility that there may have been an underlying harware issue that caused you sofware challenges.

  • IPhoto & iTunes libraries on USB flash drive. What happens after erase/install?

Not exactly sure how much background someone like Kappy needs for this question but I'll try to not make it a novel.
My late 2010 MBA (64GB) was way low on storage so I decided to get a 64GB USB drive for it and put my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on it. Moving both libraries went exactly according to the instructions. But then after a while iPhoto started to get very slow. The spinning beach ball was running amok. This prompted me to use DU on the new flash drive which didn't show any problems. After doing that I decided to run DU on my mac HD and found a problem that coudn't be repaired without erasing and re-installing Mavericks 10.9.2..
Now, here is my current situation:  I have erased and as I write this am downloading a clean copy of Mavericks from recovery. I had backed up everything to my TC just yesterday.
    Here is my question:
After re-installing what do I do about telling iTunes and iPhoto where to find the libraries? Or, should I just use the copy of everything that I had backed up yesterday?
Sorry in advance if this is a stupid question. I checked to see if there was some support file for my issue but couldn't find anything that really fit.
As always, thanks for everyone's input. I always learn something from you guys.
    Regards, Richard
P.S.: I realize that the problem with iPhoto might not have been the issue with my mac HD and doing what I've done may not fix it. But I wanted to fix the problem with the HD before I went any further trying to fix iPhoto. I hadn't had issues with iTunes functioning with the flash drive, only iPhoto.

Yes, there's no real solution.  Apple makes thin, small computers and devices, but of course that means no big drive to store all the bulky media Apple itself promotes on the iTunes Store.  You then have to buy external storage which is almost as big as the device you are using, negating the whole concept of a mobile device.  I guess you can try wireless, though I can tell you I see about 30+ wireless devices in my neighborhood and with them trying to share only 3 non-overlapping channels I frequently see network slowdown through interference.  Of course you bought that nice light computer so you could take it away form home too, but then you are locked into using what's available on the Internet. I guess part of Apple's answer is cloud storage and redownloading.  However, Apple itself says you need to maintain your own independent archive: "You always back up your iTunes library in the event that a purchased item is no longer available on the iTunes Store," (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519), and, Downloading (using iOS or computer) past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not all media formats are available in all countries (see: iTunes in the Cloud, iTunes Match, and iTunes Radio availability by country - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5085 ); apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this).   Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list (e.g., ringtones, audiobooks), or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.
Cloud storage is a convenience but not a replacement for a hard drive at home (and of course, works best when you buy everything from the iTunes Store).

  • Reinstalling iPhoto 2 after erase & install

iPhoto originally installed along with OS10.2.3 when the Mac was new 3 years ago. Upgraded to Tiger (OS10.4.3 on DVD) then to 10.4.4 via download. Recently had to erase & reinstall system from the Tiger DVD to overcome numerous 'verify' errors. iPhoto data folders are backed up to an external disk ready to reinstall. Question is, can I now resinstall the iPhoto app from the original system DVD or will this also attempt to revert the OS to 10.2.3?
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   768MB memory; 200GB LaCie USB drive

Try a Google search to see if there is a local Mac users' group in your area. Somebody there is bound to still have iPhoto 2. You don't even need the installer, just a copy of the application (which, once you've retrieved, you should copy to a CD and keep for the next time you erase it from your machine).

  • Mail import after clean install mess

I did a clean install of Mavericks and then attempted to get Mail up and running again.  In my old User I found in the Library/Mail folder which contained a Lost and Found folder and a V2 folder that seemed to contain all the mail.  I moved those to the new User using the Shared folder and then Imported those two folders sequentially.  I was not sure how to do the import, so I did it sequentially.  When I imported the first of those folders (not sure which I did first), what I got was all of my folders of mail On My Mac but only up through 2005.  When I imported the second, I got the rest of the mail messages, but with no organization other than numbered folders.  Is there a way to do the import so everything will be back in its correct places?

  • MacBook Pro firmware update after erase & install

    Hi,
I just tried to update from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11 with software update last night and got the error message a lot of people have been experiencing, then, got stuck at the apple logo with the never-ending spinning wheel... well... tried repairing disk, permissions, everything, but didn't work...
Now I reinstalled OS X with the dvd that came with my pro (10.4.6) and I noticed that when I run softwarte update, a specific MacBook Pro firmware update and some battery update didn't show up, does that mean I already have it? because it is firmware, the installation of OS X didn't erase it?
And to all those out there stuck at the boot screen, I'm trying the manual combo update (downloading from apple.com) and will tell if this works (thank god I backed up everything!)

    Good Morning,
To answer your firmware question, yes. Once applied a firmware update is burned into the chip on the device being updated and is not subject to being removed with an operating system, the only way to change that firmware is to update it with something else.
You should be fine that they aren't showing up because, as you said, you already have them. 

  • Restoring from Time Machine after erase & install

Hi, I have an iMac I rebuilt and when I plug in my Time Machine disk, all the UIDs are mixed up.
this is not surprising as I created users on my rebuilt iMac in a different order.
This issue is how can I correct the ownership of each of my user directories in /Users?
I tried to "sudo chown -R" but it won't let me do this on a Time Machine backup disk.
the only workaround I have right now is restore the user folder and perform a chown after it's been restored.
what I really would like to do is to continue making incremental backups to my backup disk if at all possible.

do NOT try to chown stuff on TM backups. if the UIDs don't match change the UIDs of your current users on the main drive so that they do match. go to system preferences->accounts, unlock the lock at the bottom, control-click on an account and select "advanced options". in the popup you'll see the current UID and you can change it there too. after you do that you need to run chown on that user's home directory. do that for every user involved. another thing you'll need to do afterward is chown Temporary directories for all users involved. else it will mess up various cache and temp files. log in as a user and run
    sudo chown -R `id -un` $TMPDIR
    do that for every user.

  • How do i get my mail back after erase & install of Lion?

I am not using Time Machine as Genius Bar at the Apple store told me it was best not to (I was continually having errors and so GeniusBar erased my hard drive and reinstalled Lion).
They said to then manually drag over documents onto my hard drive, avoiding the Applications, so no possible errors could be dragged back onto the clean hard drive.
But now I have Mail and none of my folders and previous accounts. Of course I can re-setup my accounts, but then they will just try to redownload all of the millions of emails I had before. None of the very organised folders I previously had, sent messages, etc, etc.
Is there a way around this? Thanks.

Problem is if those emails are not on the Mail servers they are gone for good. Sorry.
The only way to tell is to setup the accounts and see what gets downloaded.
    Good Luck.

  • Restoring an iweb site after erase & install.

all of my site info is in the .mac iweb folder, but i can't see a way to load that information into iweb. i use the iweb for a photo gallery on a drum company website, and would rather not rebuild it from scratch. can anyone help?
    thanks
    candcdrumcompany.com

Well, I'm afraid that you have no choice but to rebuild your site from scratch. That is....unless you saved the iWeb "Domain" file before you did your erase and reinstall on your hard drive. This is the file where iWeb saves everything about your website. Without it, there is no way to ever edit or publish your online website again.
Everyone reading this should backup your Domain file NOW! And keep backing it up with every major update of your site! You never know when it will come in handy...
You can find your Domain file in your hard drive in the following folder pathway... /Users/username/Library/Application Support/iWeb/

  • Erase/Install Customized

Initial problem: After software update, iMac wouldn't go passed gray screen with spinning gear. Have done Archive/Install, then went to Erase/Install. It seems to work, however, when attempted to update to 10.4.11 back to same problem. Erase/Install again, only tried to update to 10.4.9 (Install discs are 10.4.7. Same problem. Will try one last time. Under customize, what does X11 mean? Is there a problem with "checking" all the options? Essential System Software, Printer Drivers, Additional Fonts, Language Translation, X11, Bundled Software.
Although my iMac functions just at the 10.4.7 version, the software is limited in it's functionality because their are the older versions. So unless I only want to play DVD's I need to get everything updated. I am thinking it was possibly third party software that caused the problem...and I did have some installed....
However I don't understand why after Erase/Install I can't get system beyond the initial 10.4.7. I have run Disk Utility, and the hardware tests and all that....Everything seems to be fine....
So back to Customized.....can I install it all?

    Hi there,
I'm thinking you have HD problems like bad Sectors.
X11 allows you to run XWindows Apps...
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XWindowSystem
Not worth the space it takes for me.
Is there a problem with "checking" all the options?
Mostly just consumes more HD space & resources, if you cut out everything you don't really need the OS will run faster.
However I don't understand why after Erase/Install I can't get system beyond the initial 10.4.7. I have run Disk Utility, and the hardware tests and all that....Everything seems to be fine....
    I'd give this a try...
    "Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the Erase tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume, then choose MacOS Extended Journalled.
    6. Click Erase & look for Security Options. choose Zero 1 pass."
Formatting & Partitioning a Hard Drive in OS X - Tiger and Leopard...
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/partitioningtiger.html
The Zeroing part may write out bad blocks & the Installs may go better.
