Bookmark "Open all in tabs" deletes all current tabs

Fresh install of Firefox 29
I have several submenu's of bookmark categories. With Firefox 28 I used to open a blank tab, go to a bookmark subcategory and "Open all in tabs", and the blank tab would be replaced with the several pages I had listed in the bookmark subcategory. All my existing tabs except the blank tab would remain on my tab bar.
Except now, they didn't. All my tabs gone, replaced by the bookmarks I just opened. Yes I can probably find the original in history, etc. but that's not the point. Why are tabs being deleted like this? I consider tab loss a very serious issue, it's akin to data loss, which is not really acceptable.

No, the tabs disappear from the drop down arrow as well.
Settings:
Open links that open in a new window in: New Tab
[x]Warn me when closing multiple tabs
[] Warn me when closing window with multiple tabs
[x]Warn me when closing window with protected tabs
[x]Warn me when opening multiple tabs might slow down Firefox
[x]Don't load tabs until selected
[]When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately
[]Show tab previews in the Windows taskbar
Hide the tab bar: Never
Though I don't see that ANY of these settings have anything to do with this issue at all.

• Links, URLs & bookmarks open in same tab -- not separate tabs so i left ff 17 for FF 16

no matter how i configure the tabs setting in firefox (open links and new windows in a new tab) , all links, URLs and bookmarks open in the same tab, instead of as separate tabs, unless i first open a new tab and then select/enter the link, URL or bookmark.
for this reason, i ALWAYS use Tab Mix Plus extension...this has mastered the use of tabbed browsing and is very easy to set up and keep up...i dont have to open blank tabs first and TMP has other options too...
i just downgraded from FF 17 to FF 16 bc Tab Mix Plus doesnt work with FF 17 and i wont have my browsing hindered by FF inability to make their tabs work...
btw, i always revert to a previous version of FF until Tab Mix Plus is updated to work with the current FF upgrade...

The development version of Tab Mix Plus works with Firefox 17.

There's no option in Firefox to open all links in a separate tab.
* You can open a link in a new tab by middle-clicking the link, holding down the Ctrl key while left-clicking the link, or right-clicking and choosing Open in a New Tab.
* Links in app tabs will always open in a new tab. For details, see App Tabs.
* If the site requests opening the link in a new window via the target attribute, it will open in a new tab unless “Open new windows in a new tab instead” is unchecked. For details, see Tab preferences and settings.
* The way links from other applications open is also controlled by the above option.
* Pop-up windows will always open as separate windows rather than tabs.

• Clientless WebVPN bookmarks - open in new tab?

ASA 8.21
Within a clientless WebVPN homepage, is there a way to open a listed link/bookmark in a new tab?  When I try to do it with the browser (right click.. Open in New Tab) it simply opens the site in the current tab.
Thanks!
Jeff

Did you ever get an answer to this, I have users asking the same question.

• I can not right click in my bookmarks "open in new tab"? Other areas yes, but not in my bookmarks. I have to open a tab first , then left click, to open. Is something wrong, the option to open in new tab is there, but not highlighted?

the option to open in new tab is there, but not highlighted?

now it is working?! Go figure. Yeah! Thanks anyway......

• Bookmark 'Open in new Tab' or 'Window' doesn't on this latest install

Right clicking on a bookmark, allows me to open link in a new tab or window.... this works for the first while, but then breaks down and doesn't open anything. Restarting FF 4.0 works to resolve this issue. But lately after a half hour of working properly.. I have to restart. Never had this issue with 3.6... this a new bug?

• Tab bar will not generate new tab if press+ - Links work- Right Button click 'open in new tab'

Now working with 3.6.18 (I had v4, then v5 briefly), the tab bar 'failed' in v5 so I went back to v3.6.18, but the problem followed.
No matter how many tabs are open I cannot get a new blank tab by clicking the "+" tab on tab bar.
I CANNOT get a new tab by mousing over another tab, right button menu "new tab" will not work.
I CAN select a bookmark "open in new tab" it works.
I CAN do the same on a link, "open in new tab" it opens in a new tab.

Didn't even know I had one, so I told it to display then went to the right hand end where a drop down menu offered "uninstall" and fired that , and again, and again, and again, the sticky little booger grinned back, but would not leave.
Reminded me of early Windows days when Win would die and tell you, "I just lost all your work" "OK?"
Going to look for a big hammer, it used to make me feel good to have the last FINAL word.

• Why does "open all in tabs" delete my entire current browsing session?

I went into my bookmarks and selected "open all in tabs" for a particular folder. It opened all those links in new tabs, all right - but it closed every tab I already had open, and did not save the session.
It is really, massively frustrating and stressful when this happens, because I have to spend hours slogging through weeks of history, trying to reconstruct what I was already doing. WHY is this set up this way? If it's going to delete all my current tabs, shouldn't it save them all as a session (preferably) or at least warn me that it will do so?

this is not the standard behaviour in firefox - per default "open all in tabs" will open the selected bookmarks next to your already open tabs. do you have any extensions installed that might alter this behaviour?
not related to your question: you have a outdated version of the flash plugin installed on your system. for security reasons you should probably update to the latest version. you can check your plugins at .

• Open All in Tabs, opens bookmarks in new tabs and leaves current tab open instead of changing to the first bookmark

Whenever I click the "Open All in Tabs", it opens all the bookmarks in new tabs instead of opening the first bookmark in the current tab and the rest in new tabs.
happens on all 3 of my computers running 8.0a1

This isn't possible anymore, due to the fact that this Boolean entry has been removed: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=395024
<br />
In my Firefox Aurora 8.0a2 (Windows 7, but Ubuntu 10.10 as well) the current behaviour could be described as follows: <br />
Open all in tabs
<ul><li>Normal click: opens all in new tabs, changes focus to first one opened;</li>
<li>Ctrl + click: opens all in new tabs, changes focus to first one opened;</li>
<li>Shift + click: opens all in new window, changes focus to first one (tab) opened;</li>
<li>Ctrl + Shift + click: opens all in new tabs, doesn't change focus.</li></ul>
<br />
Whereas I would like it to be as follows: <br />
Open all in tabs
<ul><li>Normal click: opens all but the first one (which overwrites current) in new tabs, doesn't change focus (due to the fact that the first item is already in the focused tab); in short, it changes the currently focused to the first item from the folder and appends its' rest on the right side;</li>
<li>Ctrl + click: opens all in new tabs, doesn't change focus;</li>
<li>Shift + click: opens all in new window, changes focus to the first one (tab) opened;</li>
<li>Ctrl + Shift: opens all in new tabs, doesn't change focus.</li></ul>
<br />
This behaviour was present a few versions ago and only lately have I looked for the solution to this. I encountered many bug files regarding this topic with people speaking against Firefox's behaviour that would close existing tabs when opening all in new tabs (from a folder), which possibly influenced the change that I would like to be reverted.
<br />
Please let me know if it is possible to attain the behaviour I described.

• Idea for enhancement: When in the bookmarks menu, how about in each folder adding an choice of "Bookmark Current page in this folder". ie this would appear like the "Open All in Tabs" choice does now. Where soudl I post this idea?

• Any Tab I open, goes directly into a connecting / Newtab mode where it is constantly opening a new tab. It is stuck in that cycle. I have deleted all and reboot

• How to open "Open All in Tabs" in the current tab as it did before Firefox 8.x

When click on "Open All in Tabs" on a grouped bookmark item Firefox use to open the group of tabs from the current tab onwards. Since version 7.x it does it by opening a new tab first and leave the current tab unchanged. Is there a setting to be changed to have the same behavior as before? It seems not logical because when I click on a single bookmark item it opens in the current tab.

Yep. Those are all correct.
Here's what I've learned from another site, Sandboxie. And this is why I hate upgrading FF and other s/w if I don't absolutely have to. They always changes stuff:
I believe this link discusses the related change in Firefox:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=491947
Before version 14, Firefox used a mechanism called DDE to send links to an open instance of itself. Sandboxie includes support for this kind of one-way DDE communication, specifically to support that use case, which has now stopped working.
It stopped working because Firefox 14 no longer uses DDE, as described in that Firefox bugzilla page.
I have to take back my earlier post and say that there is nothing I can do about this in Sandboxie and that some kind of workaround will have to be the long term solution.
Guest10's solution works well, but I can't add it as a default in Sandboxie because it means that if you have an open Firefox outside the sandbox and you run Firefox in the sandbox, then a new window (or tab) opens in Firefox outside the sandbox, and nothing runs in the sandbox. I feel this kind of behavior is too confusing to offer as part of Sandboxie.
It might be possible to restore the old functionality in Firefox 14. The bugzilla page says something about Firefox 14 trying to remove all DDE functionality, but the following still seems to work for me. Download the following .reg file to your desktop (outside the sandbox), then double-click it, and confirm entering it into the registry.
See http://sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=13330 for a link and a reg file.

• I opened a new tab, clicked a bookmarked site FF closed all other tabs, why?

This morning I had 4 tabs open. I clicked to open a new tab and then clicked a bookmarked site on my bookmark toolbar. Firefox 21.0 closed the other 4 tabs and displayed the site I was attempting to open in the new tab. Why did this happen?
I have Windows 7HP X64 SP1, fully updated. Also have the trouble of not being able to update the Google Earth plugin that has not worked properly for the last week. The currently installed Google Earth Plugin is version 7.0.3.8542. February-26-13. When I clicked to check the plugins are up to date Firefox says the plugin needs to be updated, but the update button links back to itself and does not update the plugin. Interestingly it does not appear in the list Firefox automatically added below.
Are these 2 problems related?. I have scanned the computer with Avast Free latest version - full scan. And with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Sophos Virus removal tool. 2 days ago Avast Free put up a red warning that I had clicked an infected link and it had saved my computer from crashing. Also asked me if I wondered why I had an infected system. Nothing showed up in any of the scans, all 3 reported my system clean.

Thank you so much cor-el that worked to enable me to update the Google Earth plugin. I disabled it in IE too before clicking the link just in case that made a difference. Then read further down on the page that I could have uninstalled it through programs and features. All working now.
As for the tab problem, seems my computer was infected with something. Yesterday after having problems logging in and my internet connection failing intermittently I booted in safe mode with networking and ran Combofix and it seems to have solved the other problems. If I could understand the report it spat out when it finished cleaning my computer I would have an idea of what the infection was.

• Firefox 8 changed how "open all in tabs" works for bookmarks. How do I get it back to the way it worked in FF7?

In fFF7, right clicking a bookmarks folder displayed a menu with "Open all in tabs" as the first item. Selecting this option closed all other tabs, then opened the group in new tabs. This changed in FF8--now the group is opened in tabs adjacent to the already opened tabs. How do I get it to act like it did in FF7 (and before) where the open tabs where closed before opening the new folder?
Thanks

So your advice for a feature that worked fine, was intuitive, and we want, but was removed from Firefox, is to add an extension? That's not helpful.

You can middle-click a link to open the link in a new tab.
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
