Bookmark problems in safari

Over the past few days I thought I bookmarked a whole bunch of pages at a site only to learn the next day that my iPad 3's Safari failed to save any of them. I'm pretty distressed. I see a few other people have experienced the same thing. Is Apple going to share the secret as to why, or just let us flail about in frustration? Any help would be appreciated from fellow users, and especially from Apple.

This is happening to my iPad 2also. I think it is either a recent Safari update or an iOS update problem.

Bookmarks problem in Safari, please help!

When I open safari, and this is for the Bookmarks Bar, I will go to click one of my bookmarks, and they wont be clicked! It's really weird. Like usually when you click a bookmark, it'll show you it has been clicked. I will click it many many times before it even realizes that it's being clicked. I don't think it is my mouse, and I am not double clicking! So any suggestions? Bug? Safari problem? What?

Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
/Library/Internet Plug-ins
In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

OK, it now sort of works. A couple of problems here:
After updating IOS, Safari iCloud was "automatically" switched off
Switching it on had no effect
resetting my iPad automatically switched off safari iCloud again
after switching it back on, it said "turning off safari data"
switched it off and on again, now it said : "turning on safari data" and the sync worked
On IOS 7 no problems
The bookmarks not being displayed was because after pressing the book icon, it defaulted to showing the history and I had to press "Back" to get to the other options

SEVERE Problem With Safari Bookmarks Sync

Just thought I'd bring this one to people's attention (as well as submitting a bug report to Apple).
I have my bookmarks synced across all devices (MacBook, iMac, iPhone) and recently I decided to tidy them up a bit. On the MacBook I started moving bookmark folders into a newly created folder called "Archive" (wanted to just put some stuff I don't use often into a folder to reduce the number of top-level folders in the Bookmark list). I did this once successfully but the second time I tried to do it Safari threw an error, something like "You cannot do this right now because Bookmarks are being synced."
OK, I thought, I'll wait.
Then the folder that I'd just moved hundreds of bookmarks into disappeared!
No undo. No CMD+Z. Nothing would get it back.
Then the full horror dawned on me - Safari was now busy syncing this across all my devices. I checked my iMac and iPhone and yes, that folder full of bookmarks had been wiped off every device. Forever.
What I found ubelievable was:
1) Safari does not keep a 'previous version' of the Bookmarks.plist file in the same way that, say, iTunes does with it's database.
2) iCloud does not actually 'back up' your Bookmarks. Whenever you edit them on any of your synced devices you are creating/destroying bookmarks on the only single copy of those bookmarks that exists
So, thanks to that nice little bug (and poor implementation of bookmarks management in Safari), I've just lost hundreds of bookmarks that I can never ever recover.

I use Dropbox for everything. This wouldn't help though in this case as unless I'd have manually copied my bookmarks to a folder in Dropbox there is no automatic way of making use of Dropbox's features with Safari (as far as I can see and without jumping through hoops)
I'm not so much griping about whether or not iCloud backs up your data but more warning that there is a severe bug in iCloud sync whereby somehow it managed to destroy a folder full of bookmarks (which it shouldn't have done) and then propagated that through all my synced devices (which, technically, it should have done). At that point your are screwed because there's no fail-safe mechanisms in place as there is with iTunes (which makes a historic copy of your database each time you perform an operation that alters it).
Or alternatively, given that all of Sarafi bookmarks are just nodes in a single XML file, why not make it so that you can revert to previous versions as you can in, say, TextEdit.
I have submitted a bug to Apple by the way, I only posted here as a warning to others to be very, VERY careful when messing about with your bookmarks if they're synced to other devices.

I believe that our “Werbung problem” adds an additional second hyperlink to the pop-up window. This second link is activated whenever you trigger a saved hyperlink to a Mail.com site.
I had the same problem and eliminated it by deleting all bookmarks, hyperlinks and automatic links that take firefox to a mail.com address. So I just deleted all bookmarks I had saved for mail.com. I also changed my home page link because it also went to my email at mail.com. I then did a warm boot, opened firefox and re-saved my bookmarks and homepage to the desired addresses. Good luck.

Problems with Safari in vista

I'm having some problems with Safari in Vista.
I recently wiped my hard drive, and reinstalled Windows. Anyway reinstalling programs and I've come into a problem.
When I open Safari it gets stuck loading. It does this with any site.
All my other browsers work fine, and even with the firewall and stuff turned off it won't work. It worked fine before, but now it just won't do anything. Not even a page won't display thing.
It just gets stuck. Anyone know how to get it to work? Thanks.

Is java 1.6.0.3 latest version installed?
have you tried removing the two user folders that Safari uses to store prefs, bookmarks, history and cache in? (don't delete, just rename or move aside).
For now, FF 3.0A is probably a better choice until later anyway. There are WebKit latest builds, but I don't know how to use or install those in Windows, but would be 10-19-2007 of the core foundation Safari uses.

Problem with Safari - Solutions?

I have had a problem with Safari (3.1.1) for a while and have been waiting for each update to fix it. I was wondering if it is a problem everyone is having, or if not, what can I do to fix it.
Here is the problem - for the RSS feeds there is a number in parentheses next to the Bookmark folder name. This number is always correct (although it might take a second or so to update). But sometimes menu items do not show the a corresponding number in parentheses. When I quit and startup Safari, the number of RSS items now appears next to the menu item.
Any ideas about how to fix this?

I have had similar problems to those you described. The solution that worked for me was deleting the RSS feed and then creating a new RSS feed.

Problem with Safari 5 in Windows XP

Hopefully someone can help me out with this problem.
Safari 5.0 launches with no menu bar or toolbar, only the bookmarks bar and tab bar are showing. Without either the menu bar or the toolbar, I cannot turn the menu bar or toolbar back on.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Safari 5, but the menu bar and toolbar are still missing after the reinstall.
Are there any keyboard shortcuts I don't know about to restore either the menu bar or toolbar?
Any dies how to fix this?

Problems with Safari 6.0.1 on OS 10.7.5

I'm having massive freezing problems with Safari 6.0.1 freezing up on me in the last 10 days or so. I'm running OS 10.7.5 on 27" iMac Intel circa mid 2011. Any help appreciated.

Okay. At the beginning of this discussion I was on 6.0.1. However, I responded to an update since then and since I didn't realize 6.0.2 wasn't compatible with Lion I responded and updated.
Now, with your message, a clean 6.0.1 installation sounds like a great idea. However, I've downloaded it from your link and when I install just from the install program, I still have an "About Safari" showing 6.0.2. I then tried setting up a separate Safari folder in the Applications folder and installed into that. I only got some Safari-associated folders and items there but no new Safari app icon... and the Safari 6.0.2 icon (which I hadn't gotten rid of since I don't want to lose my bookmarks, etc... want to transfer those once the 6.0.1 is there) is still there.
All the hanging-up problems are still happening, btw... and probably even worse. Right now I'm using Camino, a good browser but Safari has features I'd like to get back to... got Firefox, too, and like it, but I've got it set up for other family members to use and Safari here for me.
Any help on how to get 6.0.1 installed again without losing bookmarks greatly appreciated.

I do not experience the same problem with Safari, but I prefer to use Firefox, as all of my bookmarks and passwords are saved there. I just like the way Firefox works better than Safari.

Could you start by resetting the zoom level on the page? To do that, you can either:
* Press Ctrl+0 (that's a zero) on the keyboard
* View menu > Zoom > Reset

Today all my Bookmarks disapeared from Safari, when i checked my iphone they were there and then went away the same happened on my ipad. Any ideas on how to restore?

My iCloud setting are set for Safari sync.

Then you have misunderstood what iCloud is.
First. It is not a back-up service. It is a sync service.
That distinction is very import. A back-up service would have backed-up your bookmarks but iCloud's function is to synchronize your data, in this case your bookmarks, to all your devices. A backup service, by it's very nature, would allow you to roll back to a previous version of your data or file. No such roll back function is present in iCloud's services.
For example, if you add a bookmark to Safari on your Mac that same bookmark will be added to all your other devices that are connected to your iCloud account. Also, if you delete a bookmark it will be deleted from all those devices.
iCloud does not make a distinction between deleting one or all of your bookmarks and it will do the same to all your devices. It does not know that was not your intention. That is why it is very important to have Backups and Apple makes it very easy using Time Machine and a simple hard drive connected to a computer.
Let's see if your bookmarks have actually been deleted or if there is another problem.
Your bookmarks are stored in a .plist file the following directory, ~/library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
To get to that directory go to the Finder, select the Go to Folder… menu item in the Go menu and enter ~/library/Safari/ in the field provided. There you will find the Bookmarks.plist file.
Select it and hit the space bar on your keyboard to see a preview of the files content. Does it still contain references to your bookmarks? If it does still contain references to your bookmarks then something else is going on and we'll have to find a different solution.

Bookmark Problem

So today (well close to tonight), something weird has been happening with my bookmarks. i just want to state that i am using Safari 5
Heres the explanation: in the past i have bookmarked a few webpages into my bookmark bar. in the past month, the bar has become too cluttered for my liking so i moved the old/unused bookmarks into a bookmark folder. tonight, the bookmarks have begun to reappear into my bookmark bar (thats the weird part).
anyone know why this might be happening and a possible solution. also, today in the morning (when i wasn't aware of it), my cousin and brother-in-law took my MBP and started looking at watches on random websites (such as ewatchesreplica.com, watchreplica.net, watchez.com, and hot-watches.com, those are the only ones i can see the urls of in my history). could it be that one of those websites gave my MBP a virus?

Try trouble shooting.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 7 buttons and click Reset. Relaunch Safari. If the Bookmarks issue persists...
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
If you still have problems with Bookmarks, go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari and move the "cache.db" file to the Trash and relaunch Safari.
If deleting the "cache.db" file didn't help, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari and see if that makes a difference. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder. If Safari functions as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash. Relaunch Safari.
And if you didn't repair disk permissions after updating Safari, it would be beneficial to do that.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Problems with Safari, Firefox and Flash player

Ever since I got my new iMac that has Snow Leopard I've had problems with Safari and Firefox freezing or crashing. It appears that part of the problem is the Flash plugin because sometimes a screen pops up and says something like: the flash script is having problems. I've tried uninstalling & reinstalling Flash, Safari and Firefox but the problem is still there. My browser seems to hang up or freeze a lot no matter if I use Safari or Firefox.
Any ideas?
I just discovered the Chrome browser from Google this morning and so far its working very well. No freezes and it appears to handle Flash video without any problems.
How can that be?

Ah! The proverbial missing information. Why the regrets? Most people are having no issues migrating from previous computers; it's the preferred method. See Best Practices and Setup new Mac. You're a long way from starting over.

On a laptop G4, 10.5.8 and Safari 5.02 I experience the following:
On the account of my oldest daughter everything works fine, i.e. wireless internet works and no problems with mail or safari.
On the same laptop, on the account of my other daughter, the wireless is OK, she can mail etc. But safari nor firefox works. It says: can’t find server (whatever site) and in the activity window it looks if safari tries to open files (in the safari preferences-folder) in stead of http. Same applies to Firefox, so maybe it has more to do with HTTP in general?
What goes wrong? What to do? I tried the following on the host terminal (tips from Apple)
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
and
defaults delete com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled
but that did not help,

I'm still wondering why it happens now at this moment in time...
PC does seem to be a bit odd & inconsistent, the few times I've tested with it, at least so far as we content filtering goes; and if I remember rightly, you're not the first to report previously ok settings suddenly preventing some or all internet until pc is switched off altogether.

HI and welcome...
Remove that particular desktop wallpaper. That's probably what's causing your to lose History and TopSites.
Open a Finder window. Now open the Library folder then the Safari folder. See if that wallpaper is hiding in the Safari folder. Mine does that also. If it's there, move it to the Trash but don't empty the Trash.
Quit Safari (Command + Q) Now relaunch Safari. If History and TopSites are ok, then empty the Trash. It's that image causing the problem.
