Bookmark restore

I have Windows 7 Home Premium os
I'm using the latest version of Mozilla Firefox
I have a meticulously updated Sony PC with top notch AV and spyware programs
My computer is not causing the problem I have with Mozilla, here goes.
I don't like the structure of Mozilla's browser bookmarks. In fact, I never have liked them. The use of these json backups is tedious and it NEVER works right. I'm pretty smart, but the way you have this structured for the average person on the street, they could NEVER figure this out without a computer science degree.
The flaws I am seeing with Mozilla bookmarks are increasing, and I'm considering shopping for a new product because of this.
I have almost 11,000 bookmarks. I have them meticulously organized in folders.
Just yesterday, I lost about 150 bookmarks, through no fault of my own. Mozilla dropped them without warning. They are important links and are backed up in one of those ridiculous json files.
I can't get the json file to recover. Mozilla hangs and will not restore the bookmarks from the json file.
I can't get the entire 11,000 bookmarks transferred or synced successfully over to internet explorer either, because that browser is even more inferior than Mozilla and does not manage or load bookmarks well at all for my needs.
There are a lot of other HUGE design flaws with Mozilla bookmarks, such as the lack of a confirm dialog when deleting a bookmark. This has been a flaw for YEARS.
One other lingering problem with Mozilla is that since all the bookmarks are stored in a single file, it is IMPOSSIBLE to extract a small set of specific bookmarks within a single bookmark folder for sharing, emailing, or other manipulation, such as archiving. Nobody on the entire internet knows how to do it, so it must be impossible and has been a serious shortcoming of Mozilla for YEARS on end!
However, my main problem now is how in the HECK can I get that json backup file converted in such a way as to read the missing links I want in text format for those 150 bookmarks that were deleted by Mozilla's software glitch?
I really need to get those bookmarks back, however it is not worth messing up my current bookmark folder (which is still working on Mozilla) to retrieve only a small number of bookmarks.
To summarize:
1. Please tell me why I can't restore the large json backup file of 11,000 bookmarks in an easy, convenient way and in a relatively short period of time? I'm not prepared to wait for up to several hours for this task and I don't want to risk losing what I have in the process of restoring.
2. How do I convert that json file containing the backup of my bookmarks into a readable file or better yet an importable/exportable file to use to recover only a small portion of the backup file (1 folder containing 150 bookmarks).
Please help Mozilla, I'm frustrated and getting a little angry that I can't get this done. I have researched extensively on the web and nobody can give me a straightforward and simple answer to fix my problem. That is why I had to write you as a last resort.

1. Create a new Profile.<br />
2. Restore the JSON backup to the new Profile. <br />
3. In the new Profile open the Library, then open the folder of bookmarks that you want to restore in the right pane - '''Copy''' all those bookmarks. <br />
4. Close that Profile and open the original Profile. <br />
5 Open the Library and create a new folder. <br />
6. '''Paste''' the bookmarks that your Copied from the new Profile into the new Profile.

Using 3.6 version, updated this morning no bookmarks, restored them but bring it up and no bookmarks again?
I restarted my computer after re installing my bookmarks from my desktop but the bookmarks are not showing up when I bring up a new browser window. Was working last night and this morning it had an update then the bookmarks disappeared. How do I get the bookmarks to come back up when bringing up a new browser window?

In Firefox 3.6 and later on Windows you can hide the "Menu Bar" via "View > Toolbars" or via the right-click context menu on a toolbar.
Press F10 or press and hold the Alt key down to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily.
Go to "View > Toolbars" or right-click the "Menu Bar" or press Alt+V T to select which toolbars to show or hide (click on an entry to toggle the state).

  • Bookmark restore problem: " A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete. script: resource://gre/modules/PlacesUtils.jsm:1436"

I'm trying to restore bookmarks from a .json file (as xmarks keeps duplicating and corrupting my list) and Firefox often works really slowly also. I know this as I ususally get a script message errors and option to continue or stop.. In this case with restoring bookmarks everytime I try to restore with my saved .json file I get an interruption, and the message " A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete. script: resource://gre/modules/PlacesUtils.jsm:1436" i stop the script (if i continue the same warning comes up) and then get half of my bookmarks restored or similar only if that, and another message telling me FF is unable to process the bookmarks!? I think this unresponsive script is the one that randomly comes up when I'm working FF hard, and causes it to run slowly- or it is a very similar looking message. Any comments and ideas appreciated .
    Running on Macbook pro 2GHz Intel Core 2Duo, 2Gb 667 Mhz DDR2 OS 10.6.8

One other thing....the same script error on Ubuntu Linux 11.10 on my old Dell. And it seems that the backup I thought I had made probably was saved incorrectly, again only half of the bookmarks I had sorted out were created in the file- i should have exported a copy as another safeguard!

  • In the firefox configuration under the General - Startup settings is there a way to disable the 3 buttons under the homepage? (Use Current Page, Use Bookmark, Restore to Default)

I am looking for a setting that I can put in the Mozilla.cfg file to disable those buttons from being clicked. Because when I set the homepage and lock that setting a user can still click the buttons below the homepage setting to change their homepage away from their "locked" setting

If you lock the pref that sets the home page via a lockPref line in mozilla.cfg then it should not be possible to change the home page setting.
Did you check that the pref(s) have a locked status on the about:config page?

  • I want to import bookmarks (.json) from my old computer BUT i do NOT want to overwrite the existing bookmarks on my new computer. How can I do this? Other solutions simply restore (i.e., overwrite)...

Windows 7, FF 10.0.2. (The old computer was probably like XP and a very old version of FF...)

All good ideas!! However, here's another twist. There are actually TWO old computers--my old personal laptop and my old work computer--different sets of bookmarks. And no, I don't have access to either computer anymore.
However, it sounds like I can do two iterations of AliceW's suggestion--i.e., Export my current bookmarks, restore first old computer bookmarks, export restored bookmarks, restore second old computer bookmarks, then reimport both created sets to merge into a new super bookmarks. Is that correct?
I think I'll go take a walk in the park first to clear my head... then I'll come back and try it. It sounds quite easy in principle.
Thanks to all!!! I'll let you know how it goes! :)

  • How to restore all your bookmarks after refreshing your computer and reinstalling mozilla?

my computer started bugging and then I was obliged to restart it but the computer proposed me to refresh because my computer does not start well and I did it and i hadto reinstall mozilla. now my problem is that i lost all my bookmarks and i really want to have them back because they are important. i tried all i can to restore them but without success

If for instance you reformatted the hard dive and reinstalled the Windows 8 Operating System then unless you had a backup disk image or specific backups elsewhere of Firefox data then you will have lost your bookmarks.
It depends rather on what you did when you refreshed the computer and reinstalled Firefox.
Firefox itself tries to keep bookmark backups, and WIndows tried to keep some previous versions of files.
Please try to give more detailed information about what you did.
'''Immediately backingup your Firefox profile''' may help to preserve some of those bookmarks and backups so you should do that. Then post back and explain what you did when refreshing the computer. Try use the same jargon as was in the instructions you followed, for instance did you reformat the hard disk drive?

  • Bookmarks have disappeared on two machine unable to restore from backup folder in Firefox. How can I restore my bookmarks?

All my bookmarks have disappeared on two machines. I tried used the restore function it did not work, and I tried to updated my Plugins and for some reason Firefox would not register the updates . How can I restore my bookmarks?

Immediately backup the profiles on both machines. Keep the profile backup files and folders somewhere safe outside the Firefox program and profile paths. The Windows Desktop would be a suitable location.

    * also note the information on bookmarks [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]]
Do you use Firefox sync ?
*[[Firefox Sync - Take your bookmarks, tabs and personal information with you]]
that is not itself a backup, but you may consider the synced second device to be a backup
Restored bookmarks overwrite the existing bookmarks. You may still have some left, but unfortunately you could have overwritten most or all of them with corrupt copies. If you backup the profile at least you have access to copies of whatever automatic backups were made. Note in future that it is good practice to periodically make backups.
Post back again once you have backed up the profiles, and read the linked articles.

I have read accounts of the same problem that I see to have missing years of bookmarks. The forum responses seem to indicate there is not solution to restoring them. Not an acceptable answer. I need to have all of my bookmarks restored since I started using Firefox some years ago. I need an explanation on how to do it. Surely the Firefox team has a solution. Expecting me to just accept there are gone and irretrievable will not work. I await a solution to the problem.

When did you lose your bookmarks?
    Read this article:
<br> [[Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data]]
After you locate your profile folder, inside there is a '''bookmarkbackups''' folder. Open this folder and see if there are any files here. If you do, move on to the next step below.

  • Lost bookmarks and frequently visited tabs after doing a system restore. Easy help? Not a computer whiz.

Last night I tried to download a file converter from IQmango. I was nervous because it was taking so long, so I discontinued it. Not soon enough. AVG toolbar captured my computer and so did a IQmango, which would not let me access my Firefox homepage. Instead of the little fox, I got this green IQmango icon. I did a system restore in frustration of not being able to rid my computer of these hijackers, and in the process, lost my bookmarks and my tabs of recently visited places. Can someone speak to me in plain English and tell me how to get them back. If I can't, it is okay. Just tell me I can't. I tried updating Firefox browser before the restore, and so maybe that is what did it. I've never had this happen before. I have Windows Vista. Windows 6.1 OS, if that helps. If you can give me a 1. you click this; 2. you click that, etc. I would appreciate it. This all started because Windows DVD maker doesn't take an MP3 file!!! Helloooooo Windows!

    (1) Bookmarks
If you go to the bookmark restore menu, are any recent dates listed? You can check that using the steps in this article: [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]].
    (2) Frequently visited tabs
    (A) Do you mean the thumbnails on your "new tab" page? These will be repopulated by your history. But if you had pinned sites here, you might not be able to recover those.
    (B) Do you mean tabs that you kept open from day to day by restoring your previous session where you left off? That data is fragile and might not be recoverable.
Step 1 would be to salvage your sessionstore files and make backup copies before exiting Firefox or making any other changes.
Open your active Firefox profile folder (personal settings folder) using
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
Copy all files that start with sessionstore to a safe location such as your documents folder.
Does the sessionstore.bak file look as though it has a timestamp of your last good session, or something later or much earlier?

  • Lost booknamrks sub folders including the bookmarks after restoring from a backup file, how can i retore my bookmarks?

I was organizing my bookmarks, by mistake I deleted a folder, after that I restored from a back up file (from the library window), instead of getting my bookmarks restored, I've lost all the sub folders including the bookmarks within!!! Now i only have the bookmarks in the unsorted bookmarks folder. What went wrong here and how can i get my bookmarks back?

For the next time that this happens:
If you have accidentally removed bookmarks then use "Organize > Undo" in the bookmarks manager (Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks) to get them back.<br />
The Organize button is the first of the three buttons on the toolbar in the Library (Bookmarks Manager).<br />
That only works if you haven't closed Firefox.<br />
If it didn't work then you can restore the bookmarks from a JSON backup.<br />
This will replace all current bookmarks and you lose bookmarks that were added since that backup was created.<br />
    <br />
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Backing_up_and_restoring_bookmarks_-_Firefox
In that case you need to export the current bookmarks to an HTML file before doing the restore and import that HTML file after you have restored the JSON backup.<br />
You can remove duplicates with the CheckPlaces extension or you can copy the existing bookmarks to the clipboard before restoring the JSON backup and Paste them back afterward.

  • My bookmarks and history keep disappearing and the backup system isn't working (this has happened a half a dozen times in the last few weeks). Any ideas why?

I have manually recreated my list of bookmarks in Firefox several times now only to come back (days) later and find they have disappeared. Probably related (but less concerning) is the fact that the browsing history also seems to have been cleared.
My browser is set to remember my history and I haven't been using the private browsing option. The backup/restore option for the bookmarks doesn't seem to be functioning, either, because even when I select a day on which I know there were functioning bookmarks, "restoring" to that day does absolutely nothing.
The computer in question is my desktop at work, and I haven't been in the office much over the summer, so I didn't know what updates had been installed and when, so I was hopeful that updates were somehow responsible. However, the bookmarks I saved this past Friday were lost over the weekend, and according to the update history, no new updates were installed.
Before I left the office on Friday, I tried restarting the browser and the computer in an attempt to figure out what was triggering this deletion; neither of those two actions had any effect -- the history and bookmarks were all still in tact after the restarts.
    Any thoughts?

Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.

  • New laptop installing bookmarks from a CD and new from Carbonite - How to get both to show in bookmarks

The motherboard went out on my Laptop 10/20/10. A CD was made of from the Hard Drive of the Firefox Bookmarks on the old laptop. (Windows XP). New Windows 7 laptop purchased. I imported the bookmarks from the CD to Firefox on January 13, 2011. However from purchase of the new laptop (12/20/21010) to January 12, 2011 I created new bookmarks on the new laptop. The old bookmarks were not on the laptop yet. When I imported the old listing of bookmarks the newer ones were removed. I have Carbonite. I contacted them and they said they can only do one or the other. I needed to contact Mozilla for any assistance with importing both. I have the new bookmarks restored from Carbonite on my desktop. If I attempt to import them to the Bookmarks it tells me that the bookmarks currently in Bookmarks will be deleted Can I import both the old and the new Bookmarks into one listing?

You need to export one set of bookmarks to an HTML file and then restore the other set.<br />
Then you can import that HTML file to merge the bookmarks in that file with the other bookmarks.<br />
You can also try to copy all the bookmarks to the clipboard in the Library before restoring the bookmarks from the JSON backup. Then you can paste them back afterward.

  • I had to create a new profile in Firefox and now, I can't access important data such as bookmarks which I desperately need.

After two days of not being able to open Firefox, I found an article on this website which suggested that I create a new profile. I followed the instructions (which never stated that I should first backup Firefox or my old profile) After creating the new profile, Firefox is once again working fine but, I am unable to access important data such as bookmarks and history.
I have followed several suggestion on this website but, I am still unable to find my old profile content.

As long as you did not uninstall Firefox and remove personal data, your old profile still should be in the same location. Depending on how messed up it was, here are two options:
'''(1) Use the profile manager to start Firefox up in your old profile and create a fresh bookmarks backup.''' If it didn't run, this won't be useful.
To start in a different profile, Exit out of Firefox and start it up from the Start menu, search box, using
    firefox.exe -P
Your old profile may have a name like default.
Then you can create a fresh backup or export of your bookmarks (or both) to a neutral location (e.g., the Documents folder). These articles have the steps for creating these files:
    * [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]]
    * [[Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks]] (note: does not preserve tags you have assigned to bookmarks, if any)
Exit Firefox, use the profile manager to return to your new profile, then you can either restore the bookmark backup or import the HTML file. The difference is that a restore completely replaces whatever exists now, while an import adds to what you have now.
    * [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]]
    * [[Import Bookmarks from an HTML file]]
    Success?
'''(2) Restore an old bookmark backup.''' Firefox creates these files regularly, but it might not be perfectly complete.
To access the old files, I suggest starting from your current (new) profile folder. You can open that from within Firefox using either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
    * (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
    * type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This should launch a new window showing your ''current'' settings files. Using the address bar of that window, click up to the Profiles folder level and then double-click into your old profile folder, then into its bookmarkbackups folder. Copy the latest backup file to a neutral location (such as your Documents folder).
Back in Firefox, try to restore the older backup. Note: this will completely replace your bookmarks in this profile, so if you have saved new bookmarks you want to save, please perform the optional steps in the following list:
    * Optional (preserve new bookmarks): [[Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks]]
    * [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]] - use Choose File to go to your Documents folder to get the old backup
    * Optional (add new bookmarks to the restored set): [[Import Bookmarks from an HTML file]]
    Success?
