Maybe you've only read about it happening to other people. Maybe it's happened to you and induced the worst panic attack you've had since your first stage kiss in a 7th grade play:
Losing those once-in-a-lifetime shots to corruption of your camera's media card.
Well, it would probably be in all of our best interests to gather the resources for recovery while were not deep in the throes of this kind of panic. The MacOSXHints.com site has
an item today
about a couple of free and open-source utilities that could very well save your bacon.
Go get the tools mentioned and keep 'em handy; or, at the very least bookmark the article so you can more quickly get on with the business of file recovery when you find yourself neck-deep in disaster.

EDIT: Well, I've done my best to keep this floated near the top of the thread index for 5 days. No responses allowed me to do that with a simple one-character edit. Well, we can just let it slide off into the abyss, I suppose. I thought it could be a valuable resource, but apparently I'm the only one, seeing how it didn't garner a single response. Oh well...I tried. :)

"handy to have, just in case."
That was my whole reason for posting. Might not happen often, if ever. But if it ever happens to me, I'll at least have some place to start, instead of just standing around pissing my pants.

  • Can not access the media card files Blackberry 8310 - HELP

Can not access the media card files Blackberry 8310.
I had a battery drain problem. The unit would only last 16 hours before completely drained. Purchased a new battery with the same result. I figured that I should try a complete reset so I did a hard wipe. Once that was done and I loaded the unit back up and returned online, the battery drain problem was resolved but now I can not access the media card.
     Here are the messages:
“A media card has been inserted that contains encrypted content which will be unaccessible by this device”
I can see the files. I have transferred them to my PC via the SD card but I can not open them. Here are the settings:
     Media card support – ON
Encryption Mode: - Security Password & Device
    Encrypt Media Files – YES
Mass Storage Mode Support – OFF
Please note – I can not change the encryption mode since it is set by policy
Security Options – General Settings – Content Protection – Disabled
The version of Desktop Manage I am using is 4.2.1.8. When I try to use the Media Manager to move the files, I get an error message and can’t move the file. If I access the file on the card and try to display it, I get:
     Unable to display file /media card/ pictures/ing000000xx.jpg.rem
Here is what I have tried (from the advice on this board):
     1)     Read the files directly off the media card – No good
    2)     Create a “new” folder on the media card and move a file into it then try to read it – No good
    3)     Email the file then read it – No good
    4)     Reset Encryption mode to off then try – Can’t do it – IT Policy setting
    5)     Be sure that the password was set the same as before the wipe (setting is password & device) – Can’t do it – The Blackberry prevents me from using an old password.
So I think I can’t read the files because I can’t replicate the encryption key. Could that be right? My problem is that I do not understand why this would be the case. It is still the same device and since it knows what the old password was (because it would prevent me from using it again), why would it not generate a key to access the files?
All I am trying to get off the card are pictures on my 6 year old … some are priceless. Can someone help me do this? One would think that this should not be this hard but from all the postings I have found, it seems that it is. And yes, shame on me for not moving the files before I did the reset (THAT will never happen again!) but this being unrecoverable is unconscionable given how many seem to find themselves in this situation.
Thanks for any help you can offer!

Not sure why you couldn't see them using mass storage mode. Did you have the pics stored on your media card? Try going to media-menu-explore-media card-blackberry-pictures See what the extension is on your pics. If any have the extension such as .jpg.rem they are encrypted.

  • Viewing media card files

When i plug in the USB cable on my Tour, the only files that show up in Windows Explorer are the Music folder. When i use Roxio Media Managaer all the other folders show up too, like the picture folder and so on. Same thing when i remove the media card and use a card reader. How come i cant view the folders while the media card is in the phone using windows explorer????

My guess is that you don't have mass storage mode enabled. When I enable this feature I get an auto play window and choose open view files. The next window has BlackBerry and System folders I can choose from. Hope this helps!

  • Why is this massive media cache file on my C drive?

Running Adobe CS5 (NOT 6) on a Windows 7 PC.
I thought I had made sure that everything was on my D or E drives since my C drive is an SSD and I don't want anything but the basics on it.
Well, I have nearly 4GB of Media Cache eating up SSD space and no way to know if I can delete it, how to delete it, how to move that directory, etc.
Whenever I start a project I have my source files on my E drive and I list my D drive as my scratch drive.
Here is a screenshot showing the exact location of this huge Media Cashe folder.
Gents, I'd greatly appreciate some assistance. My SSD is being eaten alive.
Can this stuff be deleted? If so, how? What exactly IS that stuff and why is it on the C drive?

    Hi msp1518,
Thanks for the posting adobe forums,
These are the files for conforming audio, generating peak files for audio.
Yes, you can delete these files once you have completed the project in premiere pro.
Just, close the premiere pro : Just delete the files inside the Media cache files and Media Cache folder.

    Sandeep

  • New Media Card question

    Hi all,
This may sound stupid to some but here goes:  I just upgraded to the 8900 from the 8100 and i want to get a larger capacity media card, like 8gb.  I currently have 2gb.  I was wondering how i transfer the content from one card to another?  Do i have to use the desktop manager or is their another way?  Instructions would be helpful as i am not very knowledgeable when using media cards.
Thanks in advance for the help
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The simplest method would be to enable "Mass Storage" on both devices, plug them both to your PC USB, and then simply drag and drop the files from the old device to the new.
What I would recommend, would be to do the above, but move the old Media Card files to your PC first, and you'll have them there as a backup if needed--then move them to the new media card.

  • Media card disabled

I am unable to see my media card files on my BB. I can see them on other mobile.
I have a message when I insert the media card that my admin has disabled media card support.
My BB is not a enterprise phone and is my personal phone.
i need to know how do i get the media card support enabled.
There is no issue in my media card.
I am using z30 with the 10.3 latest support downloaded on 20 Feb.

The Z30 is perhaps second hand? It may not be on BES, but sounds like it was. If so, then reset to factory to remove the IT policy.
If the device was working ok and then suddenly this started, then I don't know. The same fix is probably called for, however. Reset to factory.

  • Somebody please help me- Media card storage NOT SYNCING WITH APPS

I really need help with this problem, im very frustrated, i called Blackberry Tech Support who sent me to Rogers, I called Rogers who sent me back to Blackberry, I then go transferred back to Rogers where i was told i had to pay an expert for my question and problem so i hung up the phone.
This all started when i downloaded the software update (10.1) on june 15th, my phone will not recognize the media card as it's default storage and my music and photos will not sync with the apps on my phone (camera, music for example).I've deleted everything and set my phone to factory settings and it's still screwed up. I read on some forums about android apps messing with folders in the device storage and when the phone see's "android" everything gets saved there. I do see the folder on my phone still and it won't let me delete it. iT says permission denied need permission from Unix. whatever the hell that means.
When i click on Music for example, it will say "indexing your media card, files will appear shortly" anddddd it neverrrrr comes. Ive swapped media cards and its the same problem. I can only access my media card through the app "files" and then you can switch to media card in that app, unfortunately its not organized to find things in an easy matter. i have hundreds of photos with no thumbnail pictures, i have thousands of songs but can only see a list of 10, it really sucks, i want my phone back LOL
Is there anyone out there that can help me please, I know i'm not the only one with this problem, there are multiple people posting similar problems on other forums and getting no answers. SUCKS

If I were in your situation, I'd put the SD card in a Card Reader (or SD Card Adapter) and open it up on the computer and COPY the files into a folder on the computer so at least everything is backed-up. Then full format the card on the computer prior to formatting it again on the device. With the newly formatted card in the device I'd enter some similar media (of similar types as to what is not being recognised) via the conventional route onto the phone. Once the appropriate folders have been created and your 'test media' are appearing normally on your device, I'd place the card back in the computer, open up your saved memory card copy as well as the actual SD in separate windows and try dragging and dropping the files (or one or two test files) into their appropriate folders - (the ones your new OS has deemed correct). You absolutely don't want to loose your stuff so back everything up. As I see it, you have a file structure created by a different operating system and you can only work with the new one which you now have. The Android folder is meant to be there, which is why you shouldn't try deleting it.
On your computer you should at least see thumbnails so it has to be easier to see what you are working with.
    Good luck (and patience)!
Edit: Sorry, I should have said that I think you have items put in folders created by your previous software version and that your current one doesn't know how to deal with them.
    Disclaimer:
I know a little about lots of things,
yet not a great lot about those little-things.

    What version of iPhoto?
What colour profile is the shot?
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Are there any recovery tools for optical media?

I've had a couple of DVD's  turned in to coasters recently and I was hoping that Linux could come to my rescue with some awesome 'raw-read' / recovery tools for optical media?
I burnt the discs in Windows 7 using InfraRecorder on a brand new Plextor drive (a 'PX-891SA') and these are my first attempts to burn discs with it so I'm a bit worried it could be a hardware fault!
I started off trying to back up some files to clear some space on my hard-drive, burning them to a dual-layer dvd, but the software kept failing to even start the burn process -- that was until I realised that I needed to run the program "as Administrator" (in Windows). It did then manage to burn the disc (I was using "Session-at-Once" mode) however when it came to the end of the burn process / the start of the 'verify data' phase it threw an error saying the write process had failed! Windows couldn't access the disc / data and (I think) still thought the disk was empty. So I restarted the burning application and used a function to just 'close' the whole disc. This seemed to work because Windows was then able to recognise the disc and read the data, although accessing the disc was slow and sounded 'stutter' ish.
I then tried to write a single layer dvd to finish off the last couple of gig I had to back up, but again the software completed the burn phase only to report a 'fail' error right at the end (I'm assuming) before finalising the disc. Although this time I'd tried to create a multi-session disc by using the '2XXA' (or something) 'Multi-Session' iso9660 format. The result was that Windows couldn't read the disc and still thought it was empty, even after trying a forced 'close disc' operation! -- Linux however could read the disc and see that the data had in fact been burnt to the disc (although I've not yet tried copying it in Linux!).
Finally I needed to burn a load of archives to a couple of discs (totaling ~9GiB) -- starting with a dual-layer dvd first everything seemed to be working fine, the burn process started okay and the write buffer was full etc., until at what I assume was the layer change-over it all came to a grinding halt and threw another 'write operation failed' error, only this time I can't even mount the disk in Linux....see 'dmesg | tail' output below:
    [ 5758.353005] ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 3
[ 5758.353015] ISOFS: Interleaved files not (yet) supported.

[ 5758.353037] isofs_fill_super: root inode is not a directory. Corrupted media?
Does anyone have any thought or suggestions that might help?
    - Is it likely to be a hardware fault? (I bought a Plextor because I thought they were one of the best!)
Maybe even if I could just close the session all would not be lost?

@chris_l -- yeah I was worried that might be the case, still I'm not sure if that explains why it keeps failing the burn process part way through?
I've tried this and that in Linux but without much luck. I'm still quite a noob with a lot of Linux things and this is the first time I'm trying anything to do with optical disks/drives etc. so I'm learning as I go...
The disk that failed in Windows but was 'readable' in Linux did just pass a run through ddrescue -- i.e. it created an output file okay and did not report any errors in the process.
However when I mounted the resulting image and tried to copy the files across the first folder reported an "input/ouput error" (just using gui copy+paste in Thunar file manager)
...the other folders did copy okay though!
It seems as though it's the lead-in / lead-out and disc finalizing process that are the main fail points with the burn operation. I don't know if InfraRecorder is any good or likely to be the problem? Anyway the drive cam with Nero (inc. Linux version) so might give either or both of these a go too, if they don't work either then at least I wont be short of something to rest a mug o' tea on
@ chris_l (again) -- the Plextor drives do have a "Vari-Rec" feature which allows a user to 'tweak' the laser power / output level so I might try this too.
@alphaniner -- thanks I've not seen this package before, I'm guessing it's a bit like cdparanoia but for dvds?!
    Thanks for the help!
(pre-post) UPDATE >>> I've just mounted my Windows partition  in Linux so I'll have a crack at burning the files using cdrtools before I resort to throwing the dvd drive out of the window and chasing it around the yard with a lump hammer

  • Does Lion Recovery tool to reinstall OS X delete all your files?

I don't know why Apple can't make this clear:  Does the reinstalling option in Recovery simply reinstall OS X over the old OS, or does it wipe the hard drive clean, including your media, documents iLife updates, etc?
Because my login freezes with the beach ball of death nearly every time I boot up, I've been hoping a reinstall would fix it, but I saw no option or information at all for what exactly happens when you do a reinstall, and didn't want to chance losing my files and settings.

I think that the installation via the Lion Recovery HD will work like a repair install--which, in the case of Lion, requires only running the Lion installer from within Lion, itself. I have done a repair install as an experiment, and, yes, there were no noticaeable changes in the original installation. Of course, if there had been an installation-related problem to fix, then the problem likely would have been fixed via the repair install.
I mentioned above that I am going to do an experimental Lion re-install. I will be using the Lion Recovery Disc Assistant. I started the process, at my first opportunity a short while ago, but canceled the installation because the predicted installation time was over 5 hours--using gigabit ethernet. I plan to start again at bedtime tonight.
FYI, the system I will be installing from is as follows. I created an ultra clean install of Lion on my internal drive using the Lion installer from an external drive. Thereafter, I installed all else "by hand." This process created a Lion Recovery HD on my internal. Then, I created a Lion Recovery Disk Assistant.
I will never use Time Machine. I think tha app can be too big a PIA especially with a laptop. In general, I don't like to lose as much control as Time Machine requires IMO. My general back up/recovery process/medium is cloning to and from a bootable external created with SuperDuper--which I update pretty frequently, in general, and backup with respect to data very frequently.
So, after creating the ultra clean install noted above and creating the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant, I cloned to my external to make make sure everything would likely reamain AOK with the Lion Recovery HD/Lion Recovery Disc Assistant over time, Then, I made sure that the Recovery Disk Assistant still apparently functioned properly after a cloning to my internal by starting up to it, etc.
And, that is the point from which I began the aborted reinstall of Lion using the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant mentioned above. And, of course, this is the system I intend to reinstall Lion on at bedtime.
Time will tell. If anyone wants to beat me to the punch, please feel free to jump right in. Hopefully, if you do so, then you will let me know what happens so I can cancel my experiment.

  • Bridge Files app and media card encryption..

Just wanted to note clearly, in hopes that someone from RIM will see, that opening files over the Bridge Files app is almost useless if your BES admins force media card encryption on, like mine do. All files saved on the MicroSD card are encrypted and have a .rem extension appended to the filename. When this happens, the Bridge Files app is too dumb to see the file and decrypt it.
It is clear to me that this could be fixed in a software update and I hope it will be. It dramatically limits the usefulness of the bridge. I can't open any file saved with the bridge browser, or anything that comes as an email attachment. Most annoying..
Can anyone comment on whether RIM has made a statement anywhere on whether this will be fixed or not?
    Thanks!!

  • Recovering encrypted files from media card

    Dear all,
during the last holidays I took lots of pictures with my BB Z10. Pictures are automatically stored on the microSD media card. Unfortunately, the smartphone fell into salty water and now is "dead" ... In the meantime I got a brandnew Z10, inserted the media card, but got the information, that the card has been encrypted with another device, so I am not able to get access to the pictures. For decrypting the files, I would have to use the same device which has been used for encrypting. Unfortunately this is not possible.
Is there any possibility to get access to the pictures, which are very valuable to me ...   ???
    Thank you in advance
    RoJaSa

there is no way around it unless you had a backup of the phone and even still the encryption might still be in place

  • Transfer files of an encrypted media card to another BB Q10 via BBM connection

Hi, I want to transfer files from my encrypted media card (encrypted by using my device password) via BBM to another BB Q10. Will the receiving party require a decryption password to read a file? Can a file from my encrypted media card be displayed on the receiving party's BBQ10 after transfer at all?
    Many thanks in advance

Yes, it will be displayed if you send it from that device. NO de-encryption needed for pictures via BBM.

The problem started when I turned on the computer this morning. I tried to install Mozilla 4 from your website and that installed but I still have nothing on the top.

It may be due to Firebug. Seeing as how you're a web developer, it's very possible you have this installed. The latest version, 1.7X a10, appears to cause everything you described. I downgraded to "a8" and that seems to have fixed everything.
I also recreated a profile from scratch before trying this out, so I can't guarantee it's definitely Firebug.

edit: If you go to the Firebug forums, you'll see this is now a known problem. http://code.google.com/p/fbug/issues/detail?id=4012 for the issue tracker.
