Bookmarking a large MP3 file

I have this mixed CD, that's about an hour long. Since it's been said over and over again that it's not possible to have a gapless mix in an ipod I decided to make a single mp3 with this whole mix.
I was wondering if it's possible to make bookmarks like they do in PodCasts, they even give names to each bookmark which is kinda neat. Is there a way to do the same with a regular MP3 (non-podcast)?

I guess its not possible huh?

  • Trouble Importing Large mp3 File

I have a very large mp3 file (extension is .mp3, lower-cased) and I'm trying to import it into GarageBand so I can split it up into multiple files to make multiple podcasts out of it. The file is roughly 500MB and 8.5 hours long. I did not record it (hotel sound recording staff at our conference did) so I don't know what sort of settings were used in saving it as an mp3. It imports into iTunes and plays fine there.
When I try to drag it into a podcast track, GarageBand gives me an "Importing" message for a minute or two and then nothing happens (blank track, file not there). The same thing happens if I try to drag the version that plays fine in iTunes into GarageBand.
What can I do to get my file to a point where I can edit it?
If I need to convert it to something other than an mp3, can you tell me what (free?) software I need to download in order to do so?
    Thank you!

  • Editing very large MP3 Files

    Hello,
Sorry for my bad English! I am French!
I recently bought a Sony digital recorder (ICD-PX312) that records MP3 files.
I recorded my noisy neighbour, in continuous mode for three days. (I was not at home)
PX312 recorder has produced several files which maximum size is  511,845 kB corresponding to a lenght of 24H 15min.
Every file, checked with Mediainfo, have the same properties. (48kbps 44.1KHz)
I can read them with VLC media player without any problem, but I need to edit these files to keep only the interesting parts.
If I open (drag and drop or open file) these files with Audition 1.0 (I came from Cool-Edit), I found a very strange behavior.
The 24H 15min files are opened with a lenght of 1H and a half or so!.
I gave a try opening with Audition 3.0 and the result is strange too, and more "funny":
The lenght of one 24H15min file is 1H and a half
The lenght of another 24H 15min file is 21H or so.
In the Audition TMP directory, Audition has created several 4 GB temporay files that correspond to the limit of the WAV files.
    I made a test with a 128kpbs, 44.1khz. This 511,845 kB file is  9H 5min long
    Audition read it as 4H40min
The TMP file is 2,897,600 kB, far below the 4 GB limit
It seems Audition 1 and 3 (I read CS5 has the same problem too) does not share the WAV conversion very well.
Is it due to Audition itself or to the Fraunhofer MP3 codec?
Is there any workaround from Adobe?
As I am an AVS4YOU client, I tried AVS Audio Editor. It opens every file with the good lenght but does not have the needed editing functions. That demonstrates that it is possible to share very large files.
Many thanks in advance for any help or idea, because Audition is the editor I need!
    Best Regards

t's not their 'bug' at all. MP3 files work fine, and Adobe didn't invent the wav file format, Microsoft did. It's caused by the 32-bit unsigned integer to record the file size headerincorporated into wav files, which limits their size to one that can be described within that limit - 4Gb.
May be I was not clear enough in my explanation
    I Agree partly with you.
I Agree with you when you wrote that the 4 GB limit is inherant to the Microsoft WAV format.
When reading 24H MP3 Files, Audition 3.0 creates, in TMP folder, two chunk of 4 GB and another smaller chunk, to try to overcome the limit. This cutting process is exactly what I am expecting from such a software.
The problem - and the bug - is that the duration  that is "extracted" in audition is smaller than that of the original MP3 (e.g. 21H 30min instead of 24H 15min). Some part of the original MP3 files has been skipped in the cuttng/conversion process.
I dont think Microsoft is involved in this "cutting" process that belongs to Adobe an/or Fraunhofer. This is why I am surprised

  • Timeouts when sending larger mp3 files

    Hi,
I have dial-up and when trying to send 1MB mp3 files, I get a timeout error and it won't send. Is there a way to change the timeout setting to be longer? I couldn't find it in prefs and have done searches here and everywhere on the net but can't find an answer that makes any sense to me.
Thank you very much for any help with this.

enezinorm, Welcome to the discussion area!
Are you attaching the .mp3 extension on the end of the file?

  • Large mp3 files won't transfer to iPhone

I recently bought a new album and imported it into iTunes. I chose to do this with a 320kb setting for maximum quality. I added album art and lyrics etc to the songs. I synced.
Only five of the songs would show up on the iPhone. I didn't get any error messages, and it is set to import all new mp3s every time. I tried again, I even updated all the ID3 tags by removing then replacing the album title. But the seven missing tracks were nowhere to be found on the iPhone.
Then I went back to iTunes and noticed that the seven that didn't install were the longest seven tracks. The largest file mp3 installed had a file size of 9.8mb. All the seven that didn't were 10mb and up (between 10.1mb and 10.5mb).
Is there some limitation to the size of an mp3 that can be installed in an iPhone via iTunes? I wondered at first if it was perhaps beyond its ability to play them, but that wouldn't make sense seeing as it is far more memory and processor intensive to play back video.
I have a 3G iPhone with 16gb of memory, and there is well over 10gb of space on it.
Anyway I went back and reimported the songs at 192k - the good news is that it kind of overwrote the 320 ones and kept the ID tags with all the lyrics I had put in, so I didn't have to redo all that - and now they have imported fine. I'm still curious as to why the bigger files were rejected though.

I Looked and looked through iTunes to figure out how to transfer my pictures and videos from my iPhone. I was looking in the wrong place. Using this method you can easily import pictures and videos from your iPhone to your computer.  XP will treat the iPhone like a digital camera device. Therefore, any computer program that will sync to and from digital cameras to a windows box can be used to move the pics and vids over.  If you do not have a program that transfers pictures and videos from digital cameras, you can use window’s Scanner and Camera Wizard…
    1. Click Start
    2. Click All Programs
    3. Select Accessories
    4. Select Scanner and Camera Wizard
    5. Select the iPhone out of your potential devices
    6. If you want to be able to manually copy pictures and videos over in an explorer-like interface, click the advanced users only link. If you want to copy pictures/videos over in a little wizard-like interface, click Next.
    7. After chossing which pics or video, press next
8.After naming file using either the explorer or wizard interfaces will allow you to delete media as well. Using this method is obviously a lot quicker than deleting the media manually on the iPhone itself.
JOB DONE using windows XP Pro. Hope this helps someone.

Recently I am running into an issue:
Airdrop one folder containing larges Mp3 files from MBA to my iPhone6. all is good and no error msg.
However, those files cannot be found in iphone by any internal app , such as itunes or 3rd party app such as QQ music.
Those hidden files  takes around 2G files in my iPhone6 16GB, so I made a phone call to Apple Support and I got the below WOREST  experience with APPLE center in China

    The Senior Engineer answered:

  • Need mp3 file recognized as audiobook in iTunes

I create large mp3 files (3 hours and more) that I want to listen to on my phone BUT every time I exit the file it starts over again at the beginning (like a song does) when I come back to it.  I want these files to behave like an audiobook that holds my place until I return.  Anybody know how/if I can do this?  My audio editing software will save what I create in other formats (like WAVE, AAC and AIFF - whatever those are).  Will any of these work?  Thanks guys.  Linda

I have the same issue.  I tried the suggestion and actually used this method in the past all the time.  Since starting IOS 8, though, the audiobook will show up in the mp3 audiobook section of the iPhone 5 music player, but when you click it the program crashes.  It works fine if you keep it in music, but will not remember it's spot or move on automatically to the next chapter as it used to do un audiobooks.  Other suggestions?  Thx

  • ITunes 8.2 has problems handling larger music files

    Hi,
After upgrading to iTunes 8.2, I have begun to notice that the program is halted with larger mp3 files. I have quite a lot of music files with size 200MB and above and before opening them, iTunes stops for about 10-15 seconds (with "beach ball" on the screen), then the playback starts normally. This is not an actual problem, but pretty annoying though. iTunes 8.2 behaves in the same way both on my black MacBook, as well as on my oldie G4 iMac running Tiger. Never noticed such a behaviour with earlier 8.1 version of iTunes.
Has anyone encountered similar problem and could there be any remedy? Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    Matt

    iso_omena,
I can't duplicate your problem here, so maybe there's something about your machine or the software installed on it. Do you have any iTunes plugins installed?
You can also take a sample of iTunes while it's hung and send it to our good buddy, Roy, who will forward it to the right Apple engineers. To sample iTunes:
    1. Open the terminal app in /Applications/Utilities
    2. Get iTunes into the state where you have the spinning cursor and the music's not playing.
    3. At the command prompt in the terminal window, type in "sample iTunes 10". This will sample iTunes for 10 seconds and then tell you where it put the output file.
    4. You need to send that file to <[email protected]>. Make sure that you include:
    (1) the sample file.
    (2) the link to this thread.
    (3) a one line description of your problem, i.e. "iTunes crashes on launch".
    (4) the username that you're using here in the discussion boards.
Roy is getting a little swamped with messages and needs to make sure he gets all the information. And if he doesn't get that information, the message is just going to get dropped on the floor.

  • Is there way to sync mp3 files that won't upload to iTunes Match?

Let me briefly explain. I subscribe to iTunes Match. This works great except that there are a few large mp3 files (i.e., lectures) that won't upload to iTunes Match. I need to get those files on my iPhone or iPad. With iTunes Match on, all the uploaded music is synced but not those files. With iTunes Match off, I can easily add those files. How can I get these files to sync to the device and still use iTunes Match for all the rest of my music?

You can only remove them in iTunes on the computer.

  • Combine files into one MP3 file

I hope I can explain this correctly, but I want to know if there is a way to combine chapters of a disc into one larger MP3 file. I am importing all of my audiobooks into iTunes so that I can listen to them on my iPhone. However, there are so many discs with chapters that I would like to condense them into fewer but larger files. I hope this would condense the overall memory usage and make it easier to navigate.
Is there a program on the Mac or for the Mac that can do something like this? I am on an iMac with Snow Leopard.
    THANKS!!!!

    See this -> Join Together
"Join Together automates the process of joining the files of selected iTunes tracks together with QuickTime and exporting them as a single AAC Music or Audiobook file/track. Optionally, you can then create a "chapterized" audio file of the exported AAC file with pointers to the individually joined tracks."

You need to change your signature.

  • What is Simplest Way to Edit an MP3 File?

I have an MP3 file of an audio stream that I recorded using Audio Hijack Pro. I have a section at the beginning that I simply want to delete completely. And I also want to break up the big MP3 into three or four individual files. What's the simplest app to use to do this? Thanks.
    Steve M.

Well, I use DP for most of my own projects, and that (I assume along with most other DAWs these days) now allows you to directly import/edit/export MP3 data. And I used to buy 'Pro' keys for Quicktime which would then allow you to lift out selections, from any file type that QT could handle, and create a new file from that; I arrived at that solution to accomplish precisely what you're concerned with, after having tried out the various OS9/OSX freeware/shareware audio editors that wwere around at the time - if Fission had been available then in the same price range, think I'd have bought that. And I've got a couple of Windoze Freeware equivalents to Fission on my XP machines.
But actually with reference to your context, I've been using Audio Hijack Pro to record about 12 hours of 128kbs DAB broadcasts per week for the last 3 years, and being ex IT I use a 4th gen database programming app called Omnis to manipulate my MP3 recordings via Applescript/Quicktime. Never got round to actually editing out content, which was what I'd intended (getting a bit long in the tooth for detailed programming, couldn't be bothered to gen up on the MP3 tagging), so I just maintain a database of my own 'bookmarks' for my MP3 files (now up to about 150GB of 1/2/3 hour segments !).

  • I cannot play mp3 file on itunes after i recover it from an external hdd

hey guy'z i need a little help here
i have a large mp3 file from an old 2TB which had a problem and then recovered and transfered to a new ext hdd.
now after the recovery was done and i'm trying to play my music on the itunes it wont play
    any solution guys?
and another thing is the wma file why i cant i play it also on my itunes?

iTunes cannot play WMA files.  Use a conversion program such as Switch or EasyWMA to convert the WMA to MP3 or AAC.
For your problem MP3, make sure it is a valid file by playing it in another player such as QuickTime.  If it plays there but not in iTunes, then it needs to be cleaned up with a program such as MP3 Validator.

  • Copying/Burning mp3 files to CD (80 minutes)

I've been trying to copy an .mp3 file that is exactly 79 mins and 58 secs long to CD (2 secs shy of 80 mins). Every time I try I receive an error stating the destination disc will not fit onto the 80 minute CD-R. Is there a reason for this and if so is there a way around it?

Ok... First I tried to use the .mp3 file to burn it within iTunes. Then it said it couldn't burn the play list which got me thinking iTunes was interpreting the entire play list. So I moved the individual .mp3 file to a new playlist and tried. Still iTunes wouldn't allow the .mp3 to be burned onto the audio CD and asked me if I wanted to span the discs. So I created another play list which contained the smaller version of the converted .mp3 -> .wav file. It worked flawlessly and in 2 mins the entire CD was complete.
So there must be something to do with the size of the file(s) as well as the amount of time of the files for Audio CDs.
You maybe right about it shortening the file during the conversion but I tried twice and came out with the same exact amount of time for the .wav files. This leads me to believe both the size of the file and the amount of time (at least within iTunes) must be the issue.
I also (previously) attempted to burn it using Roxio's Toast but had no success burning the large .mp3 file to an audio CD that way either.
iTunes did give me the option to split the file between multiple discs but this is not the result I was looking for...
Either way.. The .wav file is now on an audio CD and I played the entire disc and it worked fine. I didn't even notice a difference in the sound quality between the lower 32 khz sample rate and the discarded 44Khz sample rate. Both the .mp3 and .wav sounded near the same - I did leave it at 16 bit stereo though.
So, problem solved for now I guess. Now, I need to burn the 2nd disc which shouldn't be a problem as the files do not span the total amount of time or file size of a standard 80min/700mb CD.
The more I think about it the more it makes sense. In an .mp3 file the data is compressed; with the .wav file the data is not compressed and is purely raw data. So turning .mp3 files into an audio CD does not necessarily mean it will fit on a standard CD even if the time allotment states it will fit via .mp3 files.
I never ran into this issue before but it's kind of interesting how it all worked out.

  • 2H 20 minutes mp3 file shows 4 minutes 30 seconds in iTunes!

I have a large mp3 file that I added to iTunes.
In iTunes that piece of music shows up as 4 minutes something.
When I play it, it starts at 0:00 goes all the ways to the end (4:30) then the music goes on
but the time counter stays stuck at 4:30. No way of knowing when the file will end.
I went in OPTIONS to change the start and end times for that piece of music but it doesn't change anything.
When I play the file in VLC, the correct lenght of the file is shown (as in other players also)
Is there any way to change the way iTunes interpretes the infos or metainfos about that file?
    Thanks

I remember having a problem like this many years ago with an mp3. Probably some incorrect information or corrupt element. Download mp3Trimmer and open the file in mp3Trimmer. Then just save it again to a new name. It won't damage your original and that may just help it clean up the file. Also read the mp3Trimmer website because I know there are various repair utilities you could try.

  • Copying Large Blocks of MP3 files from External Hard Drive to iTunes

I'm trying to copy large numbers of MP3 files from my external
hard drive to iTunes. I tried putting them in the iTunes music folder but this did not work. Then I tried selecting blocks of the songs and dragging and dropping them in iTunes. This also did not work because when I select a large block of files and then click on them (holding down the mouse button) to drag them, then they become "unselected." So, I guess my question is 2 fold: Why can I not copy and paste these files to some folder on the Macintosh Hard drive where they will be recognized by iTunes (show up in iTunes) and what is wrong with my clicking and dragging technique? Am I losing it?

If you are trying to add tunes to your library then do the work from within iTunes not via the Finder. Droping the tunes into the iTunes folder will not create a reference for iTunes to find the tunes. You should be able to drag-drop the tunes/folders into the main iTunes window.
It is usually easier to use the 'keep' and 'copy' features selected. This way iTunes will keep your tunes organized and all in one place. If you work from in the iTunes interface then you will likely not go wrong.
From the iTunes File menu select 'add to library' (+O) and navigate to your ext HD and iTunes should bring those tunes into your library.
