Bookmarks are gone

Since the last Security-Update 12.05.2006 all Bookmarks in Safari are gone. After the restart Safari started blank and all Bookmarks were deleted or ??. Is there any chance to find them again somewhere? Bookmarks.plist. is empty.

Surprised to hear the Security Update affected your bookmarks file. I haven't seen this reported by anyone else.
Did you do a spotlight search for Bookmarks.plist? Do you see a copy other than the one in your Safari folder? If that file does not exist, you will need to recreate your bookmarks, certainly not a pleasant task.
I back up my system to an external drive, so there is always another copy of the Bookmarks file on hand. Also, once a month, I make a copy of the Bookmarks file on my HD. This is a "just in case" copy - just in case I need the file and the external doesn't cooperate.

  • After an automatic upgrade, all my bookmarks are gone, none of the troubleshooting answers help - how do I get them back?

    I just simply turned on my computer and clicked FireFox as always. Looks like some updates installed and now all my bookmarks are gone. I've looked at all related troubleshooting answers and nothing works. How do i get my bookmarks back?

    A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • My bookmarks are gone and I want them back -- DO NOT TELL ME TO SEE YOUR LOST BOOKMARKS SECTION, I ALREADY HAVE AND IT IS NOT RELEVANT.

    My bookmarks are gone, yet again. This has happened before, but last time it was fine. I was able to restore them since they get saved automatically some days. This time, the "restore" option is not working. It says it can't get to the files or something. My bookmarks are VERY important to me. I would like them back. And please, PLEASE do not tell me to check the "lost bookmarks" section. I read through everything that looked applicable and none of it helped in the least. I apologize if I am being rude, but my bookmarks ARE ALL BLOODY GONE! I even looked in some MozillaZine thing for help, and it hasn't helped at all! It just tells me "this is here, which is a bunch of letters and numbers you'll never understand, and that's there, which is ANOTHER bunch of letters and numbers you'll never understand!!" NONE OF IT MAKES ANY SENSE WHATSOEVER! I want to talk to someone personally about this. An English-speaking human, preferably. God, I don't even CARE! Just help me get them back!!

    I've encountered the same problem; I (reluctantly) upgraded Firefox after years of happily using version 2, and discovered that I should have, apparently, saved my bookmarks before updating.
    There is NO "places.sqlite" file anywhere on my hard drive.
    Following the procedure at https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Lost+Bookmarks#Restoring_bookmark_backups restores the bookmarks folder saved *today*. . . after Firefox reverted to a *two year old file* and saved it over my existing one. (How do I know it's two years old? It has house search information from before my toddler's birth, that's how.)
    There is no bookmarkbackups folder.
    Searches across my hard drive for the following files turn up nothing useful:
    * bookmarks.bak
    * bookmarks.html
    * bookmarks.html.moztmp
    * bookmarks-(date).html
    * bookmarks-(date).json
    Oh, there *is* a bookmarks.html file that's larger than the 7/2 one that's been created; it is, however, from a transfer from IE bookmarks dated 2006.
    None of the rest exit. Even searching for just the extension of .json turns up nothing.
    I really, really want my bookmarks back, and I am not thrilled about this; I trusted Firefox not to screw up on an upgrade, and that's the only reason I didn't make a backup before installing. Silly me.

  • All of my bookmarks are gone and I did not have a google email account

    I downloaded firefox 4 and now all of my bookmarks are gone. I never had a google email account, so I cant retrieve them that way. How can I get them back?

    Hopefully you didn't do a complete uninstall of the previous version...
    First, you may want to make a backup of your profile folder. It contains not only your current bookmark list, but a folder of backups. But these are not saved forever. To back up Firefox, see [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Lost%20Bookmarks#os=win&browser=fx4 Backing up your information].
    The following article has suggestions for recovering bookmarks: [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Lost%20Bookmarks#os=win&browser=fx4 Lost Bookmarks | Troubleshooting | Firefox Help].
    Hope that helps.

  • I had to restore my computer to its original settings after a crash. I backed up my files before hand so I didn't lose data in memory. When I ran Firefox from it, my bookmarks are gone. How can I get them back if I can?

    My computer had trouble starting for a long time. Taking it to the shop didn't help. Today it just wouldn't start at all. In a desperation move I restored it to its original settings as if I just bought it. I chose the backup files version so that I didn't lose any data in memory, though I do have to restore some settings. When I ran Firefox all my bookmarks are gone. Everything is in the My Backup folder. How can I get my bookmarks back if I can?

    As always, iphone will sync with one comptuer at a time.  Syncing to another will erase the current content.
    The backup that itunes performs does not include any itunes content.  You should keep everything on your computer and should always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
    You should copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.
    You can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:

    You get the import wizard if the profiles.ini file that registers all Firefox profiles is missing.

    You can check if there still is an older profile folder.

    If you do not have a backup of the files on that old hard drive then your Firefox and other personal data is lost.

  • My bookmarks are gone, and the awesome bar is not working anymore.

    Yesterday morning I had a short problem with my internet connection. I used the qwest quick care to try and solve the issue, but it didn't really help. The internet connection was restored later in the day. Now, however, all my bookmarks are gone and the "awesome bar" no longer makes suggestions for sites when we start typing.

    Did you install the Places Maintenance extension and checked the places.sqlite database file?

  • During the upgrade all bookmarks are gone. There does not appear to be a saved file of the bookmarks.

    I have attempted to restore and import the former bookmarks, but I do not know where to look for the files. On a windows XP service pack 2 desktop computer, I upgraded from 3.6 to 15 last night and all bookmarks are gone. Please help me find where to look for them. Thanks

    Do you see any JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder with a file size large enough that they can contain your bookmarks?
    You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Whenever I opened Firefox Start Page, all my bookmarks were displayed on the left side. I accidently hit something, and now all my bookmarks are gone. Help.

    Whenever I opened Firefox Start Page, all my bookmarks were displayed on the left side. I accidently hit something, and now all my bookmarks are gone.

    Firefox has a Bookmarks Sidebar you can open and close using Ctrl+b. That's pretty easy to hit if you're trying to bold something, but if a website doesn't intercept it, then it affects your sidebar.
    Was that it?

  • A.. bookmarks are GONE! I've tried to locate them as per the instructions to no avail. B. No history is being saved. Cant restore,says unable to process back up file. HELP!!! Thanks much in advance.

    A. All of my bookmarks are gone. I've looked in the folders suggested by Mozilla. Nothing there.
    B. Im unable to save any bookmarks except my homepage. When I do it is placing it in a bar above my open windows in the browser.
    C. I used to be able to type in the first few letters of a website & it'd come up as a drop down in the browser bar-no longer does that.
    D. NONE of my history is being saved. Attempts to restore a previous date it says its unable to process the request.
    Ive gone through my settings many times and nothing seems out of order.
    Help!!!

    That combination of issues is an indication that there is a problem with the file that stores history and bookmarks. For details of how to fix it see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite

  • Ran software update and now all my bookmarks are gone.

    I ran a software update and when I opened Safari I noticed all my bookmarks are gone. I located the Bookmarks.plist and it shows nothing of my old (2 1/2 years worth of) bookmarks in it. Is there any way I can get them back or am I toast?
    Any help would be great.

    You may be toast.
    Do you have any backups of your system, or at least your user library file?
    Have you used Spotlight to search your system? The installer via Software Update updates the app, however leaves the Safari folder in the User Library alone. If for some reason you moved this folder, a new one would be created when you started up Safari after the update.
    Please post back.

  • After restart, MANY bookmarks are GONE....  where are they???

    Recently I have had to do a lot of install/restart... install/restart.... install restart (about 8 so far today)... that is annoying enough in itself, but then I noticed that a ton of my bookmarks are GONE. Where the heck are they and how to I get them back....???
    and how do I make that blue marble stop bouncing..... I'm tired of the install/restarts already!!!!!
    Thanks.

    Safari bookmarks should be found in /Users/<your name>/Library/Safari and are named 'Bookmarks.plist' If you can't find them there then do a search of your Mac or alternatively if you have a backup restore them from there.
    sig is quite correct in saying that some updates won't show up until after another update or updates have been done so it is not unusual to have to go through the update process more than once. However, it would appear from what you have posted that something is not working properly as the number of times you say that Software Update has run appears to be excessive. I suggest you start by opening Disk Utility and repairing permissions then run Software Update, make a note of the updates installed including the versions. Open Software Update again and see if the updates listed to be installed are new or the same ones you have just installed. If they are new updates then install them and repeat the process until you get a message to the effect that your software is up to date. In the event that you see updates that should have been installed but weren't then go to the Apple Downloads page, search for the relevant software, download it and try to install from the downloaded file.
    Post back if you have any problems.

  • My bookmarks are gone and i cant save new ones. how do i get them back

    all my bookmarks and history for this month are gone. everything else works. just need my bookmarks back

    See [[lost bookmarks]] for details about how to recover them.
    In you case this may be due to the file that stores bookmarks being damaged, for details on that see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite

  • Uppdated to 18.0.2 and suddely all my bookmarks are gone. Restore does not work.

    Hi There. Just updated to 18.0.2 and all my bookmarks (16 years!!!) are gone. Tried restoring but Firefox says it can't read the files.
    What to do?
    Best / Michael

    Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.
    You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Bookmarks_history_and_toolbar_buttons_not_working_-_Firefox
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Bookmarks+not+saved#w_fix-the-bookmarks-file
    You can also try to reboot the computer or run Firefox once as Administrator.
