Bookmarks bar in iPad Safari

In iMac Safari, I have a nice thin grey line of defaulted Apple, etd. links. Kinda nice, but I would prefer to use the precious real estate for other things.
In iPad, the support links suggest turning it on in Settings, Safari, General, and 'Always show Bookmarks Bar'.. Well it is on. Still no bookmarks bar.
I was able to bang around and get a folder added to Bookmarks. I have only a couple Apple site links in there, but don't yet see a way to add links. I will.
The folder is now displayed up there now taking up more precious real estate on this miniature screen. Tapping on it gives me the 2 Apple sites,
I would rather just have a single line of 8 or so really favorite sites lined up there like shown in the posts provided by others here.
Please, Can anyone tell me how to just have the line there without folders?

If you turned on the Always Show Bookmarks Bar - you have to add the bookmarks to that particular folder in the Safari Bookmarks as well.
In Safari - go to the web site that you want to add to the Bookmarks Bar. Tap the Arrow icon next to the url field. Select - Add Bookmark. Then select Bookmarks Bar from the next window.
If you dont see the Bookmarks Bar folder as a selection - tap the bottom folder that shows in that window - and then all of the other bookmarks folder should appear. Select bookmarks bar from there - then tap save.

It's a default 'folder' in the Safari browser (on the computer) - if you sync bookmarks, it will always be on the phone.

I am on iPad2 and iPhone4 with the latest iOS. I tried turning iCloud "Sync Bookmarks" off, rebooting both devices, and turning Sync back on. That seems to be when iCloud wants to add even more empty "Bookmark Bar" folders.

Ok, so...ARGH!!! The solution was SO SIMPLE that I can't believe it took me this long to figure it out.
Long story short: I was able to delete the "Bookmarks Bar" folders (15 in all!) from my PC (Win7). AND, the process did NOT delete all my existing iDevice Bookmarks (YAY!).
So, in case anyone else stumbles upon this thread with the same issue:
Open iCloud on your PC
Turn on option to sync bookmarks with IE
('yes' to merge bookmarks- This step does not delete your existing bookmarks on your iDevices)
Make sure your iDevices are set to sync bookmarks in iCloud.
Next, open your "Favorites" in IE on your PC and right-click/delete all "Bookmarks Bar" folders.
Voila! Done! No more Bookmarks BarS...although there will be ONE that will not go away. One is better than 15:)

Bookmarks bar not displaying

Since migrating from Mobile Me to iCloud I have lost the bookmarks bar in mobile Safari on my iPad. In the list of bookmarks I have two bookmarks bar folders, one is empty, the other contains the correct bookmarks bar links. The bookmarks bars on my two Macs are correctly populated. I suspect Mobile Safari is using the empty folder. I have tried to delete this folder but cannot. Any help would be welcome.

Did you go to Settings>Safari>Always Show Bookmarks Bar>On?
Have you tried quitting Safari and restaring the iPad?
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button.Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and holddown on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in theupper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

You can't - Safari on the iPad can't be personalised in that way, all you can do is add bookmarks via the icon of the square with the arrow coming out of it

I tried redoing my bookmarks on my MacBook after I posed the question and that did it, but I'm glad to know how to do it on the iPad. Can someone please tell me how I can 'unsync' to restore my desktop Safari bookmarks bar? My wife connected her iPad to my desktop iMac while I was out, and my valuable bookmark bar has been replaced with the one she had on her iPad

I don't sync bookmarks so I don't know for sure how it would work - but logical reasoning says that if you have Safari bookmarks selected to sync from the Mac to the iPad and back - then if the bookmarks bar that you want to go back to is on your iPad - then sync your iPad to replace what she has done.
What about a Time Machine Backup - any chance you use Time Machine? I guess that would be too easy.
I dont know if this would be of any help at all but I found this thread - but you would have to have the bookmarks bar on your iPad the way you want it on the desktop or this will not work.

The bookmarks disappeared in safari on iPad and I am unable to create new ones or bring back the bookmark bar

During the day yesterday, the bookmarks I had in Safari disappeared, as well as the bookmark bar. In preferences I still have the "show bookmark bar always" option marked. When I hit the bookmark symbol, to create the bookmarks the display has changed and it looks like it is creating a new bookmark, but when I go into bookmarks it is no longer there.

Tap Settings > iCloud
Switch Safari off then back on.
Give iCloud a minute or two to sync your bookmarks.

Bookmarks bar and tab controls not working in mobile Safari on iPad2

The bookmarks bar as well as tab controls in Mobile Safari on iPad 2 are not clickable. Only the topmost nav buttons work. This persists through reboots w/Safari closed via mem manager, and a system restore. What do?

That is obviously exactly what I meant. How does one reboot an iPad without "resetting" it? How does one do a system restore without "resetting" it?

Safari bookmarks different on iPad and iMac

I've synced my iPad and iMac numerous times but the bookmarks on my iPad are the original ones and haven't updated to those on the iMac. Any suggestions?

The exact same thing happened on my iPad over the last day or two … all of my old bookmarks disappeared and were replaced with just the set of default items (Google, Bing, iPad manual, and a couple of others). I couldn't add any new ones at that point, either. Eventually I tried killing off the Safari task in the bottom bar of background apps, and when I restarted Safari thereafter my old bookmarks were back. Definitely seems like a bug, but at least there was a workaround that helped in my case.

On the iPad's Info tab when connected to your computer's iTunes there should be an option to sync bookmarks from Safari on a Mac or PC (from the manual) :
Sync bookmarks with your computer:
1 Connect iPad to your computer.
2 In iTunes, select iPad in the sidebar.
3 Click the Info tab, select “Sync Safari bookmarks” under Other, then click Apply.

Hi, I quitted Safari and press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons silmutaneously unti the Ipad turn off and on with the logo Apple appears but it has hanged on and fixed to the point. I do it again hold the Home and Sleep buttons silmutaneously and the Ipad turn off and on again with the Apple logo but it still is hanged on the same point. I think my Ipad is fault now. I guess I must connect it to the computer with itune, or something. So my case is this: at the moment everytime I hold the Home and Sleep buttons the Ipad always off and reappear with the Apple logo and be hanged on (like the pic), and I need restoring my Ipad Safari bookmarks... so I guess I need using Itune or something to get back the Ipad then using Icloud or blah. Please guide me for the step, Im not sure if connect to PC, if any that my Ipad data would lost, or is there anyway that I also can get back Ipad Safari Bookmarks after connecting to PC, also the how using Icloud. Is there a way to hide the bookmarks bar in iOS 8 on the iPad? It takes up a large part of the screen when in landscape mode

Since I upgraded to iOS8, my iPad screen permanently shows the bookmarks bar down the left. This means I can only use about ⅔ of the screen when in landscape mode. Is there something I am missing which allows me to hide/show the bookmarks bar? Thanks

last thing you can try would be go to settings, general, settings, reset all settings
if that does not work, a factory restore will be needed...
