Bookmarks for mp3/aac Audiobooks/Spoken word

I listen to a lot of books. Audible.com's downloaded books get bookmarks, remembering where you were when you come back to them after listening to something else. These bookmarks are transferred to the Mac on a sync operation. If you rip you own books purchased on a CD, the mp3 or AAC files do not have bookmarks. Any workaround available to be able to get bookmarks for these files?

in itunes, in "get info" for the audio files in question, tick "Remember Position" (or something along those lines) it'll be under the 'options' tab if you only select one track at a time.
This is from memory, so if it's not quite correct, it should lead you in the right direction

  • Software for mp3 & aac pitch correction?

Sorry if i've posted this question to the wrong forum as it doesn't seem to quite fit anywhere and thanks for any and all responses. I'm a guitar/bass player and I frequently learn songs by playing along with them from my ipod hooked to my stereo. However, I often run into songs that are way off correct pitch (440 hz) and it can be very difficult and time consuming trying to tune an instrument to match an off pitch. Is there any software out there that would correct pitch. Thanks again.

    check out Audacity.

  • Books & Spoken Word and Audiobooks

I downloaded some books on CD I have to itunes. One I converted to a "true" audiobook using instructions suggested elsewhere in the forums (what a hassle! I will probably just leave them "Books & Spoken Word" in the future). Other books I imported and left "Books & Spoken Word". Problems I'm having:
    1) The "true" audiobook appears and reappears in iTunes under Audiobooks. Even though I couldn't see it in iTunes at the time it did successfulyy sync to the iPod and I can listen to it just fine. I go back to iTunes it's there -- then it's not.
    2) Some the books on CD I loaded show up fine in iTunes and iPod but one doesn't "Italian Immersion". I see it in Genre "Books & Spoken Word" in iTUnes but it is no where to be found on the iPod.
Thanks for any ability to demystify what's going on. It shouldn't be this inconsistent!

As you found out, in order to be in the audio book section of the iPod it needs to be a "true" audio book.
This is done by making it a .m4b file type. No other way.
Once you understand how to do it, it should be fairly simple.
Here's a link if you don't remember how or where you did it -> How do I get my audiobook to appear in the Audiobooks menu on my iPod?

  • Setting bookmarks for audiobooks

I principally use iTunes for listening to audiobooks, and it is irritating me no end to have to find a pen and write down where I am every time I close down iTunes. It's even more fun if the computer crashes and/or it's a long book without chapter titles. I ran a search in this forum, and all I could find was this advice:
    Select the file in iTunes.
    Right click - get info.
    Select the Options tab.
    Tick Remember playback position.
I've tried this but it doesn't remember the playback position next time you open iTunes. Indeed, it started doing strange things. I tried stopping at bookmark at 9.43 minutes into Track 15, and when I reopened it started at 9.43 min into Track 1. I changed to 14.32 min into Track 17, and this time when I reopened, it was still at 9.43 min into Track 1. Is there anything that can be done to set a bookmark? Failing that, is there any other software that will work for me here?

what you need to do is convert your audiobook files to the proper format, which is m4b. i listen to tons of audiobooks, all of which i get in mp3 format. what i use to convert is a free program that combines all your small mp3 files into one large m4b file (you also have the option to keep the files seperate but i see no point in that). once you have converted, add the file to itunes. it will add it to your audiobook folder and automatically remember where you left off last time you listened. it works great. here's a link to the software: http://www.freeipodsoftware.com/. it's really easy to use. just drag and drop. it even adds tags. can't recommend it highly enough.

Amazon songs have never had DRM.  The iTunes Store sold DRM-encumbered tracks until mid-2009.  The iTunes Store now only sells songs in non-DRM "iTunes Plus" format, although new DRM tracks still show up occasionally in free playlists and in podcasts.
The old DRM-encumbered tracks cannot be converted to MP3.  You can upgrade them to iTunes Plus for 30 cents apiece (USA prices) or you can use iTunes to burn them to an audio CD, which can be used like any other audio CD.

  • Ideal levels for recording spoken word

I want to record some screen recorded videos with iShowU, import them into FCP and record narration over them. I will be using a Countryman headset mic plugged into a mixer that will be plugged into my Macpro.
1.) Is there any reason to record my narration in any program other than FCP using the Voice Over tool?
2.) From what I have read, the ideal average levels for spoken word is around -12db. Should I be concerned if I am hitting below this while recording and only sometimes reaching -12db? Or is this something I can just adjust in FCP? OR should I try to average -12db when recording my narration?
    Thanks!!!

I'm with David on this. My sweet spot for peaks is in the -6 to -3 range as well. I'm talking about ideal for "recording" your VO, not necessarily for delivering a final mix to the client as already mentioned.
When you record anything through a microphone, there will be a noise floor to contend with. Even the quietest recording studios with the best isolation and the quietest mic preamps have noise and hum at some level. So it's critical for us without ideal recording environments to keep our recording levels as hot as possible without clipping in order to achieve the best signal-to-noise ratio. If you record something too low, and bring it up in post, you will be bringing up the noise floor along with the signal.

  • Good levels for spoken word?

Is there a general guideline for where levels should be for spoken word?

    Jim Simon wrote:
The short answer is no, there is no one "general" guideline on this one.
    Good answer...
To shooternz.... You can make a whisper as loud as a scream LEVEL WISE.... So they might both PEAK at -3db but the scream will still sound (RMS) MUCH louder than the whisper.
To OP... The most importing thing is to get the relationships between the audio events to blend in with each other. What I mean by that is, if you have a car dialog and are working with Foley talent
you might want to make sure that the spoken word mixes (blends) in with the environment they are supposed to be in... CLose your eyes and listen to background noise of the engine and the tooting car horns outside,
then up the gain on the spoken words until you find that they blend in nicely witht the whole atmosphere. After you have blended the various levels of one scene you can create a nested clips and make sure that is normalized.
Basically what that means is that you find the loudest passage of the clip and up the gain until that part hits the roof (I set mine to negative 0.5 dB) you can do -3db too, to be real safe.

  • Advice for recording spoken word directly into FCP?

I want to teach some kids to record spoken word directly into FCP with most likely a USB mic. I know that this is not the best way to do this, and a mixer would help greatly. With that said, can anyone provide any suggestions for getting the best quality out of a basic mic and a Mac with FCP?
    Thanks.

  • What's the best way to import spoken word files?

How do you import spoken word files, such as audio books etc?
Of course, there's no need to use as much a high bit rate as one would for music... does anyone have some good advice about the way to import it?
If I use AAC, is the 'Spoken Podcast' setting good for any type of word file? (In Preferences > Advanced > Importing.)
    Thank-you everyone.

I would recommend the 'Spoken Podcast' setting. The same setting is used for audiobooks available at the iTMS.
I imported spoken word at a higher bitrate and, but couldn't hear substantial differences with the 'Podcast' setting.

Importing audiobook CDs works exactly the same as it has for years in previous versions of iTunes.

  • Spoken Word, with Graphics,  Best Workflow ?

I am working on a spoken word project, where the text will pre-exist the audio,
and I will be using many, many stills and graphics to illustrate it (no video clips).
The audio is being created (from the written text), likely, in short audio clips.
I'm looking for suggestions on the best workflow for this project.
I am envisioning a workflow that would hopefully allow
efficient setting of in/out's, for the numerous stills, using the spoken words.
IOW, I want to simplify placing the large number of stills on the Timeline using the spoken words in the audio clips.
None of the tutorials, articles, and other search results I've found,  speak to this specifically (using so many stills, with text audio) .
Most refer to use of video clips (with metadata, Adobe Story, OnLocation, etc.)
I haven't been able to adapt any of those methods for this project.
I have CS5 Master Collection, and limited PP experience.
    Any input welcomed.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to the forum.
As your Audio Clips will likely be of varying Durations, this is how I would tackle the Project:
Do some general timings on the Audio, looking to get an average of the Durations.
Choose that, and set it in Edit>Preferences>General>Sill Image Duration. This should get you close to start.
Import the Audio Clips, and arrange them on the Timeline.
Import the Stills and do the same.
Obviously, they will not yet match up, perfectly, but should be fairly close.
Start at 00;00;00;00, and begin working with Click-dragging the Tail of Still Image #1, while holding down the Ctrl modifier key, to Ripple Edit, and thus moving all following Clips.
Repeat for the second, third, etc.
    Some tips:
In the case of all Still Images, you can let your output determine the Project Preset, say 1920 x 1080 Square Pixels, with the desired FPS. Then, in Photoshop, Scale all Sill Images to that Frame Size, so no additional Scaling will be necessary, and so that the processing overhead is held down. No since in shoving around a bunch of pixels, that will never be seen. The alternative to that would be to check Scale to Default Frame Size, but you will still have the extra pixels, requiring processing overhead.
I would use PSD, PNG or TIFF files, and not JPEG
    I would use PCM/WAV 48KHz 16-bit Audio files, and not MP3's
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Spoken Word Audio CDs

How do I NOT include 'spoken word' audio cd tracks in shuffle songs. My language cd's are on Audio cd's rather than AudioBook format so they fall into my music library... Much thanks to anyone who can help!

Select all the tracks, use File -> Get Info (or right click menu: Get Info), and in the options tab choose Media Kind: Audiobook; all the tracks will move to the Audiobook category and, if they have track numbers, cover flow will show just one entry for the group, you still see the separate tracks in the list.

  • Playback speed in Sample Editor window many, many times faster than track (at correct speed) in arrange area. How do I sync Sample Editor playback speed to correct speed/tempo in arrange area? Track is spoken word.

Playback speed in Sample Editor window many, many times faster than track (at correct speed) in arrange area. How do I sync Sample Editor playback speed to correct speed/tempo in arrange area? Track is spoken word. Sample Editor playback sounds like Alvin on a meth binge. Spoken phrase is generated from Textspeech. Textspeech can export files as WAV files or MP3 files. Perhaps a clue?:   When exported Textspeech WAV file is dragged and dropped into track in arrange area of new project, it exhibits same supersonic speed. When Textspeech file is exported as MP3 file and dragged and dropped in arrange area track, it plays at correct speed.

    Thanks Erik,
If nothing else, this huge list of updates and fixes, shows clearly that the Logic Dev team is working hard on fixing and improving LPX to a major degree.... and from the list of fixes done.. show they do read the bug reports submitted!
    As an aside....
I recall how all the 'naysayers' prior to LPX (and in some cases, since...)  were proclaiming how Logic was dead, the team was being disbanded, we won't see any further development, the Dev team doesn't listen or care... and so on....... I wonder where those people are now?

  • Acrobat won't create bookmarks from level three headings in Word 2003 doc

I’m trying to convert a series of 2003 word docs, each with three levels of headings to .pdf using Acrobat but neither Acrobat nor Word 2010 (which a friend tried for me), could produce bookmarks for heading 3.
Headings 1 and 2 are main standalone headings but Heading three has been applied to the number of each paragraph in the document (the number has been typed in manually at the start of each para) and is on the same line as the first line of text. It is separated from the text by a single tab space.  Immediately above the first line of text of each paragraph is a single line of upper case text which gives the name of the file. Normal style has been applied to both the paragraph text and the upper case file names.
    Here is how it looks;
THIS IS A QUESTION ABOUT BOOKMARKS
2          We’re so glad to have many friends that we see in the building ---too many to try to mention.  I just happened to notice, coming in the door  the man that married wife and I together.  And we’re glad to have him in with, oh, so many others.
The number “2” above is heading style 3.  All three levels of headings will produce an accurate TOC for the document so the problem seems to be that neither Acrobat nor Word 2007 can ‘find’ heading no 3 because it is set between the upper case and  paragraph text.
I’m wondering if an MS article (Q285059) I have tried to understand that refers to use of Lead-in Emphasis with Heading styles and Style Separators may provide a solution … but at this point the lingo is over my head.
I have over 1000 similar docs to convert to pdf so any suggestions that might help or even establish that what I’m trying to do is not possible will be very gratefully received.

1000 docs to convert? That's MISERABLE!
I have the same problem (on a much smaller scale) and will follow this thread to see if someone figures it out.
