Bookmarks from IE

I have downloaded bookmarks from IE. Do I need to keep IE on my system in order to keep the bookmarks or are they now a permanent part of FF

If the bookmarks are appearing in Firefox there is no need to keep the IE bookmarks files themselves. You may however wish to retain IE
* there are some functions that are easier or only possible on IE, how do you update Windows & OS for instance.
* IE may be useful as a backup browser, and maybe for troubleshooting

Export bookmarks as a HTML file to a usb stick or something.
Put the USB in your other computer and import bookmarks

How do I save and import my bookmarks from another hard drive? When I try to open the installed Firefox on the old drive, it (obviously) opens a browser from the new main drive, free of bookmarks. Is there a way I can save the bookmarks on the old drive without opening a browser?
The guts of my computer were rearranged and I got a new main hard drive. My old one is still in there and I can get stuff from it, but when I go to the Mozilla folder on the old one, I can't figure out if there's anything I can do to get all my bookmarks from that drive to my new one, where Firefox is newly installed.

If you open Firefox then Firefox will always use the default profile folder as found via profiles.ini on your system drive.
You either need to import the file in your current default profile or copy the file to your current profile folder while Firefox is closed.
Firefox 3 stores the bookmarks and the browser history in [http://kb.mozillazine.org/places.sqlite places.sqlite] and no longer creates an HTML backup by default.
There are also (five) JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder within the Firefox profile folder.
You can either copy the file places.sqlite to your [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] or import the most recent JSON backup from the bookmarkbackups folder of that old profile.

"Application Data" in XP/Win2K and "AppData" in Vista/Windows 7 are hidden folders.
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders
Go to: Control Panel > Folder Options > "View" tab > under "Hidden files and folders", select "Show hidden files and folders".
You may want to un-check the box "Hide extensions for known file types" to see the file extensions of all files.

  • How to take manually back-up bookmarks from Firefox and put into Favorites in Explorer

I just changed jobs. My last job used Firefox, my new job uses Explorer. I previously did a manual back up of my bookmarks from Firefox. Is there a way now to get them into Explorer?

For cross-browser compatibility, you should have '''exported''' your bookmarks in '''HTML''' format. <br />
Create a new Profile in a Firefox installation and '''restore''' that '''json''' file, then '''export''' in '''HTML''' format. You can trash that new Profile when your'e done if you don't want it.

When is select Bookmarks from the Menu Bar, at the very bottom are a bunch of bookmarks. How can I move these in groups to a folder or folders?

The easiest way to move bookmarks around is in the Bookmarks Organizer, which at some point was renamed the Library. To open it, you can choose Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks or press Ctrl+Shift+b.
(Please note that the sort order of the Library dialog doesn't actually carry over to the menu. To sort the menu alphabetically, it's easiest to open the Bookmarks Sidebar, right-click the words Bookmarks Menu and choose Sort by Name.)

  • I accidentally downloaded my bookmarks from chrome but now firefox wont let me log off of my twitter account, how do i fix it??

i just downloaded firefox and it wont let me log off my twitter. i did the 'automatically download bookmarks from chrome' option but i deleted them afterwards. tumblr and twitter were the only sites that already had me signed in when i visited them but tumblr let me sign out. everytime i try to log out of twitter it takes me to the usual screen they show when you log out (a promotion for the twitter app for mobile phones) but the little button at the top that tells you to sign in isnt there, instead it has the button for you to write a new tweet and it keeps my twitters background. since i just downloaded it i dont have any extensions or add ons and my cache is empty so i honestly dont know what to do. i tried troubleshooting but it didnt work and im not really good with coding, like once you tell me what to do i can do it, but i cant do it on my own, so i dont know if the file was like corrupted when i downloaded it or something...

Click the Orange Firefox button in the upper left hand corner, then hover over the arrow to the right of "History". Go to "Clear Recent History", and clear the following:
    Time Range: Everything
    Under Details check the following:
    Cache
    Cookies
    Active Logins
    Offline Website Data
Uncheck everything else. Click "Clear Now", then restart Firefox.

  • Delete bookmarks from the toolbar

I can delete Bookmarks from the Toolbar, not a problem.
The problem is that it also deletes the bookmark from the Bookmark Display List.
I use the Toolbar for just certain bookmarks, or I did, now it just fills up the Toolbar when I add a new bookmark.
    Ideas?

I looked over information supplied. I used some of the information.
However, this does not address my original issue.
When I add a Bookmark to the Bookmark column on the left it ALSO ADDS it to the Bookmark toolbar running across the top of the page.
It adds every link, folder, etc... to the toolbar and makes it cluttered. I just want a clean Bookmarks Toolbar.
If I try and delete it from the toolbar running across the top it will also delete it from the bookmarks column at the left.
I need the toolbar up and running so I can toggle the Bookmarks off and on when needed.
    Ideas?

  • Importing Bookmarks from an HTML Folder

I had to have a new hard drive install. The tech created a file call old back up which have all of my bookmarks in a HTML folder call favorites. Is there any way to import the whole folder into firefox 4.0 I can go in and do them one at a time, but I would rather just do the folder because it is already organize with subfolders.

The file that stores bookmarks may be locked or damaged which is preventing them from being deleted. Try deleting places.sqlite as shown on this site - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite
Firefox will try to import bookmarks from a backup when you restart Firefox. If you do not want that to happen, in the profile folder where you found places.sqlite, there will be a folder called bookmarkbackups containing a few files with extension .json, delete all of those files. Also delete or rename bookmarks.html in the profile folder to prevent Firefox trying to import bookmarks from that file.

  • I am trying to import Firefox bookmarks from a Windows machine into Firefox on an Apple. I do not want to use Safari. How do I do this?

am trying to import Firefox bookmarks from a Windows machine into Firefox on an Apple. I do not want to use Safari. How do I do this?
I have, on my HP laptop, running XP Pro, using Firefox 4.0, went under bookmarks to show all bookmarks. A window opens up that says library. I then go to import and back up, and I choose export HTML. I then move this file over to my new Mac Pro. On my Mac Pro I also have Firefox 4.0. I go up under bookmarks, show all bookmarks, import HTML. It lets me browse and I find the file on the desktop, I select it then nothing happens. I am not interested in using Safari. I would like to continue using Firefox. However, as an experiment, I followed the same process except on my Apple computer I opened up Safari and tried to import in the Firefox bookmarks. It came up with an error saying the file could not be accessed. I then thought perhaps the file got corrupted, so I went back to my Windows Firefox and re-exported the bookmarks again. Same problem. So, am I creating the bookmarks incorrectly on my Windows machine?
    Thanks,
    Kent

Probably your Mac cannot understand the Windows html format, please try the following to see if it helps:
In your PC, export the bookmarks in html as you did in your post. After you have saved it, change the name of the file to “bookmarks.html” and save it again.
In your Mac, import the saved file as you posted.

  • How do I clear my bookmarks from the Firefox browser on a public computer, having synced my account to see them during a browsing session?

Here's what I'm trying to achieve:
    1. I use Firefox on someone else's computer and sync my account to retrieve my bookmarks. (This works.)
    2. After finishing my browsing session, I sign out of my Firefox account, and my bookmarks are cleared from the Firefox browser. (This doesn't work.)
I have tried the following options:
    a) Open menu > Options > Sync > untick 'Bookmarks' > OK. This doesn't clear my bookmarks from the browser, not even if I close and open it again. They all show up.
    b) Open menu > Options > Sync > under Firefox Account click 'Disconnect' > OK. This doesn't clear my bookmarks either, only necessecitates me signing in to sync again.
I understand there used to be an option to 'unlink this device', which may clear all data including bookmarks, but I can't find it anywhere. I've also read an article suggesting clearing bookmarks etc can be achieved by deleting your Firefox profile from a device, but I fear this will delete global options such that I won't be able to access them on my home computer.
Surely there must be a way of siging in then out of the Firefox account on different computers, like you can with e-mail, without leaving all your bookmarks etc open for every other user to see afterwards? I'm transfering to Firefox from Chrome precisely because it doesn't have the capacity to do this (scarily), and to clear my bookmarks from a friends' browser, I had to uninstall Chrome on her computer!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Sync wasn't intended to be used in that manner. You would be better off carrying around a USB Flash Stick with Portable Firefox for use on "strange" PC's.
    2. You could open the "Library" {Ctrl + Shift + B} and highlight all those bookmarks and then delete them all at once. But that would also delete all the other bookmarks, and it isn't foolproof. All another person would need to do it to '''''restore''''' a bookmark backup file that has your bookmarks. Beyond that, a new Profile could be created and then the current Profile deleted; but that's "messing with" someone else's computer - an action that is worthy of terminating a friendship over, IMO.
And if that "public" computer was set up properly, Sync should have been disabled.

  • After restoring bookmarks from Time Machine, iCloud keeps changing them back.

Is there a way to force iCloud to choose the bookmarks from safari on my computer?
When I turn on Safari sharing in iCloud, it merges, and messes things up.
I'm running latest Yosemite and iOS8 on all devices.
    Thanks!

Thanks Linc. I just tried it. Turned of Safari sync on all devices, but when I turn on Safari sync on my computer to start things off, it's still getting the old data from somewhere. Maybe it's storing it in the cloud and I need to delete that data somehow? I definitely turned off sync on all possible devices.
Thanks for helping! I really appreciate it.

  • I have already got Firefox Home sync'd on my iphone from my old PC, but my old PC has been whiped. Now I want to set up my sync account on my new pc and retain all the bookmarks from my account. How do I do this?

Right, first I had a PC then sync'd my bookmarks to my iphone...Now my PC has died. I have a new PC and wish to sync my bookmarks back to my new PC.. But I cant seem to do this because the sync process on my new pc asks me to 'add a new device' which I dont want to do... So I click 'I dont have the device with me' and even then I can't get a sync key because there is no way to find it on the iphone app. I have looked back through my emails to see if I was ever sent one by email, but I can't find it.
SO basicly it looks like I am going to loose all my bookmarks that I want to transfer onto my new pc. Unless I manualy add in the bookmarks from my phone onto the new PC on firefox and create a new sync account?

I'm having a similar problem, but I do have the key and is not working anyway.
My old pc was running on windows 7 and my new one is an apple running on Lion.
My phone is an Iphone IV and I can see all the bookmarks there.
In order to sync, what I did was click on the "I don't have the device with me", I entered the key that was provided and the process finish ok. It says congratulations, etc, etc.
But the bookmarks are not there, I tried merging data and replacing data on this computer options but is the same.
    Any suggestions?

  • How can I transfer Firefox bookmarks from one Mactintosh to another?

Had to reload foxfire onto Mactintosh and need to import the bookmarks on FireFox on my other MActintosh.

Found the easiest way was to to use the Firefox Export function to create a Bookamrks.html by going to Firefox bookmarks and select Show All Bookmarks and select Export Bookmarks from the Library window. Then use a Flashdrive and take to the other computer and drop it on the Target computer Desktop there. Go to Firefox bookmarks and select Show All Bookmarks on target computer and select Import Bookmarks html from the Library window. Your bookmarks are now on the target computer

  • How do I import bookmarks from FF in one OS to another OS on the same hard drive?

I've installed ubuntu lucid lynx and want to move my bookmarks from hardy heron. Both OS are on the same hard drive on different partitions. I've tried using the import option in the library but can't find the appropriate HTML file.

You need to mount that other partition to be able to access files on it and then browse to the hidden profile folder on that partition.
    /home/user/.mozilla/firefox
You can only restore a JSON backup, unless you export the bookmarks in that other OS to an HTML file.

  • How-to consolidate bookmarks from 2 different Windows users

I have a few user names on my Desktop PC. I am running Windows 7 Home. And would like to consolidate my bookmarks lists.
In other words so each user gets the same bookmarks listing containing the sites of every one of the users put together in an amagamated form without repeats; a sort of an unique Master List of all bookmarks to be installed for every user to have it as soon as they open Firefox.
I am running Firefox 3.6 17, how do I make that Master List?
Is that what is described as 'syncing'?
    Thank you kindly

It will involve a small amount of work.
The basic process is export the bookmarks to an HTML file, then import the HTML files to one user account. You can then use an add-on to eliminate the duplicates. Finally you can export the master list to a JSON file, and then restore the JSON file to the other computers.
    * To export to an HTML file - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Exporting+bookmarks+to+an+HTML+file
    * To import the HTML files - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Importing+Bookmarks+from+an+HTML+File
Note: The article refers to selecting "Organize Bookmarks" in the bookmarks menu, if any of the computers are using Firefox 4, you need to select "Show All Bookmarks" instead.
Once you have amalgamated the bookmarks into one user account, you can use the CheckPlaces add-on to remove any duplicates - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/checkplaces/
Finally, for details of how to export the bookmarks to a JSON file, and restore that file on the other computers, see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Backing+up+and+restoring+bookmarks
If you want to keep the bookmarks in sync, the Firefox Sync add-on may be of use to you (this is built into Firefox 4) - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/firefox-sync/

  • How does Aperture store changes

The difference between iPhoto and Aperture is that when you edit a photo in iPhoto, the app creates an entirely new file to store the changes, while Aperture, on the other hand, can store multiple versions (edits) of a picture in a single file, thus
