Bookmarks - how do you restore from backups?

My bookmarks disappeared......... something happened while I was trying to copy old folders into the new User - and it made it disappear from my old user account!
How do you restore the bookmarks from the BackUp on MobileMe iDisk, or even the one that is on my iPhone? Should still be there............
everything says it's Syncing but the bookmarks don't seem to want to restore..........

Let's try a different approach as something odd has occurred with your iDisk.
What is your "old folder" source? If it contains the HD>Users>Your User Account>Library>Safari folder, inside there you'll find bookmarks.plist. Move it to the same location on your computer, replacing the existing file.

When I turn phone completely off, the same thing happens when I turn it on. It is very frustrating now to have no phone service or anything at all on my phone.

It sounds as if the phone is waiting to be activated. Did you update software or something like that on the phone? You can either try to finish the Setup routine, or you can connect the device to iTunes on the computer and then after selecting the iPhone in the device pane, click on the button that says Restore a Backup.

Iphone 4 went into recovery mode when trying to restore, only option available now is to "restore and update" however this will not work, how can you restore from a backup once in recovery mode and only option is "restore and upgrade"? Please help!

iPhone 4 went into recovery mode when trying to restore it. Now the only option iTunes allows is for "restore & upgrade", it is not offer an option to restore from a backup, says that must first do the upgrade, when attempting to do the upgrade the iPhone won't accept it.

You don't you must restore your phone first and then you will have the option to restore from your backup.

Using RMAN, how do you restore from an old backup file?

I use Oracle 9i on Solaris.
I'm currently doing incremental level 0 hot backups every night using RMAN in NOCATALOG mode. The controlfile is backed up with the database. I back it up to a file (e.g. "level0_20041225.dmp"). After I back it up, it's backed up to tape using Veritas. Before doing a backup, I delete the old one first.
I need to restore a copy of the database backup that was taken a month ago. This file is on tape. How do I go about it using RMAN? The documentation is not too clear as it talks more about Restoring the control file and the latest copy of the database.

You can recover to the last committed transaction,
provided you have the current controlfile, archived
logs since the backup and the current online logs.
Here's the procedure in a nutshell:
a) Restore datafiles from tape.
b) Recover database using restored files + current
controlfiles and archived/online logs. RMAN will prompt
you for the logs it needs for recovery.
You can also perform this type of recovery using a
backup controlfile. In this case you would still need
all logs as above. After recovery, you would have to
open the database with RESETLOGS because you are using
a backup controlfile.
If you don't want/need to recover up to the last
committed transaction, you use a backup controlfile and
perform incomplete recovery (time or change based). This
simply means that you stop the application of redo at
the time or SCN of your choice.

The backup will first restore you app data and other settings, it will then restart and restore your camera roll photos, apps and other purchased media.
If you're concerned about losing purchased media you can always transfer them to your iTunes librarry first. To do this, make sure your computer is authorized for all Apple IDs used to purchase your media (in iTunes: Store>Authorize This Computer). Then connect your phone and in iTunes go to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases. This way, should anything go missing you can always sync it back from iTunes.
iCloud should maintain your last three backups. You will be asked to choose which backup to restore to after choosing to restore to iCloud backup and signing into your iCloud account during the setup screens.

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. I had this problem with my 3Gs. After trying the backup a few times unsuccessfully, here's what worked for me:
1-Restarted my phone
2-Once I connected and it tried to backup, I canceled the backup message
3-Went to the phone's setting in iTunes (namely the Apps tab) and saw that suddenly the capacity bar was full rather than empty again
4-Removed some of the apps I didn't want on anyway
5-Hit "Apply" in the lower right corner
6-After the sync was complete, the phone still was not restored. However, all I had to do then was back it up from the most recent backup (which came when I did step 5)
7-Voila! The phone was back. Oddly, iTunes gave me the same error message at the end but my iPhone was working fine with iOS5!

The restore from backup process is all or nothing, & if you've been told NOT to restore from backup, there is no supported way to "selectively" restore an iPhone backup. You can use third-party software to "extract" data from your backup:

I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 5 on Wednesday and last synced it with my Mac on Thursday night at 11:30pm before going to bed. I bought the iPhone 4S on Friday morning and started it as a new iPhone. I think that I did something wrong, because I never saw the option to "Restore From Backup" so that I could port over my last iPhone 4 with iOS 5 back up. Can someone tell me if/how I can do this? In article HT5262 (linked below) iOS backups are covered. There is a section "When to use iCloud and iTunes Backup together". I understand how to do this and the reasons why. What I haven't been able to find is an explanation of how you would actually restore from both? I know how to restore from each, however, if I first restore from iCloud, how can I then proceed to restore from iTunes without overwriting my iCloud restore?

Demo, thanks for the reply. What you wrote is exactly what I thought. I'm trying to figure out why Apple is putting out this article (see partial contents below). The implication is that you can restore from both or why back up some data to one and different data to the other:
"When to use iCloud and iTunes Backup together
For an extra level of backup for your data, you can use iCloud Backup and iTunes Backup together."
Tip: If you are using iCloud and iTunes Backup together, and you simply want to speed up your iCloud Backup & Restore functions, you can save iCloud storage by turning off iCloud Backup for very large data types. For example, if you have a 15 GB Camera Roll on your iPhone, you may not wish to back it up to iCloud because it is already being manually backed up to iTunes. You can disable back up of any iCloud Backup item in Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage > Backups > Backup Options. After doing so, these items will only be backed up when you manually back up to iTunes.
