Bookmarks toolbar keeps disappearing, site zoom doesn't persist

Two problems with FF4 RC1.
It starts up with the standard windows title bar, and the bookmarks toolbar is empty until I turn it off and back on.
Page zooms weren't imported either, and they keep resetting after I close firefox.
I didn't have these problems with the FF4 Betas.

After a week of thinking I had solved the problem, it has come back - my bookmarks toolbar doesn't always load (occasionally does). I can always get it to load when it hasn't done by using 'Customize' and unticking Bookmarks Toolbar and then re-ticking it. Most annoying.

  • Half of the bookmarks in my bookmarks toolbar have disappeared.

I think this happened after a recent update. I still have the first half of my bookmarks in the bookmarks toolbar but the second half have disappeared. I still have all my other bookmarks but my history has also disappeared along with the most frequently visited sites (when you open up Firefox). It wouldn't be a big problem, but I tried to put the bookmarks back onto my bookmarks toolbar and they had disappeared again when I restarted Firefox. Any help would be appreciated!

    Hello,
If you are able to add, delete, rearrange, and make other changes to your bookmarks but your changes are lost whenever you restart Firefox, try these solutions.
Note: It is recommended that you disable any extensions related to bookmarks, as explained here, before proceeding with the solutions suggested below.
    Fix the Bookmarks file
    * If your changes to your bookmarks do not appear when you restart Firefox, the issue may be that your bookmarks file is write-protected. A write-protected file can't be changed, which prevents Firefox from saving any changes you have made.
Allow Firefox to save bookmark changes:
    * Open your profile folder:
    * At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button, go over to the Help menu and select Troubleshooting Information.
    * The Troubleshooting Information tab will open.
    * Under the Application Basics section, click on Show Folder. A window with your profile files will open.
Note: If you are unable to open or use Firefox, follow the instructions in Finding your profile without opening Firefox.
    * At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button and then select Exit
    * Right-click the file places.sqlite, and select Properties to open the Properties window.
    * In the Properties window, select the General tab. Near the bottom of the window, verify that Read-only is NOT selected.
    See image:

Bookmarks and browsing history are stored in the Firefox profile folder in the file places.sqlite. If there is a problem with this file, your bookmark changes may be lost whenever you restart Firefox. You can force Firefox to create another places.sqlite file by deleting the existing one.
You might want to print these directions out, or copy them down to reference because you will have to close Firefox to delete the files.
Warning: Once you delete the places.sqlite file, you will lose all of your browsing history.
    Open your profile folder:
    * At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button, go over to the Help menu and select Troubleshooting Information. The * Troubleshooting Information tab will open.
    * Under the Application Basics section, click on Show Folder. A window with your profile files will open.
Note: If you are unable to open or use Firefox, follow the instructions in Finding your profile without opening Firefox.
    * At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button and then select Exit
    * In your profile folder, delete the places.sqlite file and, if it exists, places.sqlite-journal.
    * (Optional) Also delete the file localstore.rdf. This will reset any toolbar customizations you have made.
    * Firefox will create a new places.sqlite file and automatically import the most recent bookmark backup file. Your bookmarks will be backed up, but you will lose your browsing history
Report if this helps ! Thanks !

  • Navigation, menu commands and Bookmarks toolbars all disappear

    Hi---started up and suddenly
---No Navigation buttons or customized buttons
    --no bookmarks toolbar
--no box in which to enter a URL and change to another page
    --no menu commands
--pretty much nothing, in fact, except the content of my home page. There's not even the series of commands for "about" or "help" NOTHING
Now, I discovered by accident that if I click on a link from my portal (netvibes) that happens to open in a new window, then all my old stuff appears.
But every time I open the first instance of the browser as a default--it's unuseable as it even lacks a place to put a url to change sites!
I've tried right-clicking along the strip as I saw in a FAQ; all I get are Windows commands (restore, minimize, close, and a nview command added long ago by my video card), but no options to CUSTOMIZE and or VIEW and restore toolbars, etc-
I tried f11 to make sure that I was not accidentally running full screen (although clearly I was not) and that test demonstrated I was not.
    I hit f10---nothing happened.
When I right click elsewhere on the page (other than on a link from some feed on my portal), it gives me a host of commands from various extensions, like "open tab in new window" or "add to evernote" or "fireshot" but nothing that seems directly related to Firefox except I can see navigation commands like back/forward in the right click menu.
Clicking on the Firefox icon in the upper left just brings up the "close" "minimize" "restore" commands mentioned earlier from Windows.
    Any advice?

Note that Firefox doesn't use the disk cache if you use clear history to clear the browsing cache when you close Firefox.<br />
You can see that on the about:cache page and in Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
    See "Creating a profile":
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • Acrobat X toolbar keeps disappearing in IE9.0

Having trouble with Acrobat X tool bars.  I had to retrograde from MSIE (Internet Explorer) 10.0 back to 9.0 due to other issues.  Now my Acrobat Toolbar in IE 9.0 keeps disappearing.  When it is present, all works fine.  When it is gone, I cannot open webpage PDFs even with <right click - open in another tab>.  Help.

Thanks.  When I try to open a link, IE 9.0 "tries" to open a new tab and then closes it and goes back to the original tab.  So basically it tries, and then nothing happens at all (i.e. it does not open in Acrobat or Reader either).  Do I need to unclick "Display in Browser"?  What about those times when the Acrobat tool bar does not load in IE 9.0, will it still have that functionality?  Should I reload the 32-bit version of IE 9.0?

  • Why do my bookmark tabs keep disappearing?

I have a mac and ever since my Firefox was updated automatically and told me to install the newest version of Flash Player, my bookmark tabs have disappeared. And every time I add them again once I quit Firefox and restart it they are gone again. I haven't touched my preferences in a very long time and this problem only started when the browser was updated. I've tried re-installing the browser and Flash Player, which didn't work. I've also tried holding down option while opening Firefox and selecting to restore my bookmarks, which also doesn't help me.

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • Customize buttons added to toolbar keep disappearing

    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Menu -> Customize
    2. Drag some of the extra icons to the top right toolbar (next to the menu icon)
Now, some icons constantly keep disappearing. As a consequence, I need to re-add them quite regularly.
Why are some icons simply not staying at the location in the toolbar where I put them?
    Thanks for your help!

You can try to click the "Restore Defaults" button in the Customize palette.
You can try to reset user the "browser.uiCustomization.state" on the <b>about:config</b> page via the right-click context menu to the default value in case there is a problem with the pref.
This pref stores the toolbar customization is current releases.
If you keep having problems with preferences, see:

  • "organize bookmarks" is no longer in my bookmarks menu and the drop down bar for my bookmarks toolbar has disappeared

I can not longer delete bookmarks from the bookmark file since "organize bookmarks" is no longer an option in Firefox 4. Also the bookmarks that didn't fit in my bookmark tool bar used to be accessible to the far right of the toolbar in a drop down menu. Now I have "bookmarks" in my bookmark menu taking up space instead of a drop down arrow with just my selected bookmarks that didn't fit in the toolbar.

"Organize Bookmarks" has been renamed to "Show All Bookmarks" in the bookmarks menu.
The Bookmarks button is for accessing the bookmarks that are not in the bookmarks toolbar. You can hide this button, if you do that, to access other bookmarks you can click the orange Firefox button then select Bookmarks.
To remove the bookmarks button, right-click on the Navigation toolbar and select Customize. This will open the customize toolbar window. Drag and drop the bookmarks button which will now be on the right hand edge of the navigation toolbar and drop it onto the customize toolbar window. Click Done to complete the process.
For more details on customizing the toolbars see https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/how-do-i-customize-toolbars

  • The bookmarks toolbar has disappeared and will not show even though it is checked in the toolbar list.

I did install the 4 beta, but went back to 3 because I hated the interface changes. I don't know if this is related or not.

Check that you still have the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" placed on the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * Make sure that you have the "Bookmarks Toolbar" visible: "View > Toolbars"
    * Check in "View > Toolbars > Customize" that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize window onto the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * If you do not see the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" then click the "Restore Default Set" button

  • Why are Add-on Buttons along with the Toolbar keep disappearing in the Firefox4,5&9?

I arrange all the Add-on Buttons on a Toolbar created for this specific purpose(Options - Toolbar Layout - Add New Toolbar). I recently upgraded from Firefox 3.6 to Firefox 12 and that's when the trouble started. All the Add-on Buttons along with the Toolbar started disappearing.I checked if any of the add-on (one by one)is causing this problem but found nothing. But the Add-on Buttons work fine when arranged on the Status Bar(now the so called Addon Bar).
Later I found out that this particular problem exists in all the Browsers based on Firefox's latest version(Pale Moon,Cometbird,Wyzo,Epic etc). That means something is causing this toolbar to disappear in the latest versions of Firefox(i.e., Firefox 4,5,10 and Firefox 12). So please help me to rectify this problem.I am impressed by the improvements made in the latest versions of Firefox but due to this problem Firefox has become useless for me.
Don't tell me about "places.sqlite" "localstore.rdf" and all that shit.I've searched the whole God damned Web,Tried changing to new Profile,Deleted localstore.rdf and saw whether it will work. This is my last resort. Firefox 3.6 was a great browser.Within a span of one year you morons have jumped from Firefox v3.6 to Firefox v12! Not allowing the Extension ecosystem to stabilize.Giving no time to apps developers to catchup. The App developers have fallen behind and half of my addons are not working. You people have become an example on how to kill a great product. The guys at MS might be watching in delight the Firefox's harakiri!
    Thank You,
    Helme.

Since I only ever put add-on buttons on the main Navigation toolbar (or the Add-ons bar) rather than my own custom bar, I haven't experienced this myself.
Can you detect a pattern with particular add-ons' buttons (or native Firefox buttons) being removed time and again?
In your new profile test, did you add extensions one at a time (one per restart of Firefox), or otherwise try to isolate particular add-ons as the issue? (Bugzilla has at least one example of an extension causing a problem with custom toolbars: [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=667627 667627 – divx html5 removes added toolbars]. I don't see this particular extension on your list.)
I wonder whether some extensions now include some kind of grooming function or incompatibility that removes their buttons from custom toolbars? It would be easier to investigate with some problem examples.

  • Bookmarks toolbar has disappeared. tried everything to restore. not working.

I've tried everything shown in Firefox help to restore my Bookmarks Toolbar. It's even checked in the drop down menu as if it has been select to show (but is shaded out). What do I do?

Try this. Right click on toolbar space>Customize>Look in icon box for something like "Bookmarks Toolbar" and drag it to the toolbars.

  • Safari's Toolbar keeps disappearing.

    This is really odd.
I tend to keep a lot of pages open in Safari. Usually I have about four windows with about a half dozen tabs in each window.
Lately I'm finding that, when I bring a window to the front and try to navigate in one of the tabs, I'm not able to because the whole toolbar is missing. There's just an empty space between the window title and the Bookmarks Bar. This empty space will collapse and expand if I select Show/Hide Toolbar from the View menu, but the buttons and the address and search fields don't reappear. This applies to every tab in the window, but all the other windows are fine, and if I open a new window, it appears with its toolbar intact. I can even drag all the tabs from the old window into the new window, and the toolbar remains visible. It only seems to disappear while the window is in the background.
Is anybody else seeing this? I couldn't find any posts about it, but it's the kind of thing that someone might just think they did something wrong, and closing and re-openeing Safari made the problem go away.

    HI David,
    Try Safari Mainenance
Just emptying the cache and resetting Safari might help.

  • Icon for bookmarks toolbar has disappeared. How can I have it permanently displayed again?

My bookmarks still exist, but the permanent icon to open the window with 1 click in the upper left corner of screen has suddenly disappeared. I was recently making adjustments to my views and toolbars, and may have accidentally switched it off but I cannot see how to get it back. Firefox 3.6. Computer novice here. Please go easy on me. Thank you.

Follow the instructions in the [[how to customize the toolbar]] article to locate the icon and drag it back onto the toolbar.

  • Custom toolbar keeps disappearing in 4 beta 12

Just switched from Firefox 3.6 to 4 beta 12, using Mac Snow Leopard. On my old version, I had a custom toolbar with the search box, various extensions as well. This has disappeared in 4 beta 12.
I created a new custom toolbar, but every time I restart Firefox the custom toolbar disappears. It also does not appear in the View/Toolbars menu. I use a number of functions at work, so I really need this toolbar! Thanks.

I had this problem too. I don't know what it is about me but no one ever responds to my questions, so no one answered when I posted one about this. But I *FINALLY* got in touch with a live chat volunteer the other day, and found out it was one of my toolbars made by Conduit. The Conduit Engine and the Zynga Toolbar are both made by Conduit and both contributed to this problem. Check if you have ANY add-ons made by Conduit, and disable them and see if that helps. If it doesn't, try disabling addons/resetting toolbars in safe mode AND deleting localstore.rdf. Then restart Firefox in normal mode, make a custom toolbar, and restart again. If the toolbar stays that time, then enable your add-ons ONE AT A TIME (i.e. restarting after each one), until the problem reappears. When it does…you know which add-on was the culprit. XD And if it doesn't reappear…then congratulations. XD

  • Toolbar keeps disappearing everytime I open a new PDF

This has just happened by magic, my toolbars don't appear when I open a new pdf in acrobat pro 8. Every time I want to see the tool bar I have to go to view and select view toolbar, annoying when I view so many different pdf's in one day. It's driving me nuts. Please can someone help?

I waited for a reply from a so called Adobe expert, but no help came to my rescue. So in the end I did a uninstal of acrobat pro 8 and deleted all trace from my hard drive. Then I deleted all trace of the preferences and acrobat user data. Then I installed the software again and the toolbars have now apperared. I'm not saying this is the correct way to solve this problem, but it worked for me.

  • Safari Toolbar Keeps Disappearing. How Do I Lock It In Place?

After launching Safari each morning I typically have to select View > Toolbar, or just use the keyboard shortcut, before I can start surfing the web.
The problem also occurs sometimes when I select File > New Window, or using the shortcut, the toolbar will be missing then.
Is there a way to stop the toolbar from being removed automatically?
Is Apple aware of this as a bug or should I file a bug report perhaps?
    Thanks,
    DAN

    Hi DAN
the common cause of this, is users having added a toolbar, or application that has added something to your mac.
    /Library/Application Support/Conduit
    /Library/InputManagers/CTLoader
    /Library/Receipts/ctloader.pkg
    /Library/Receipts/<Toolbar name>.pkg
    /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/CT2285220.bundle
    /Users/<User name>/Library/Application Support/Conduit
To which I would add that the SIMBL folder might have plugins related to other add-ons or applications.... not just the Conduit one.
These are the likely places to look, but also check
    Home/Library/Input Managers/
    Home/Library/Internet Plug Ins/
    HD/Library/Internet Plug Ins/
