Books and INDD

I have searched long and hard and cannot find my answer ANYWHERE.
My company deals with spec sheets (hundreds of spec sheets). They need to be updated on a weekly basis in some cases. Right now, the same spec sheet is duplicated among many catalogs, so each time a spec is changed, I have to update it across 5 or 6 places. They appear not only by themselves in print, but within multiple catalogs. My thought was to make each spec sheet it's own INDD file, and then create a book based on which files need to be in that book. Here's my question-
If Book A is purple, and Book B is green, and one spec sheet appears in both, is there a way to apply styles (like master pages) to a book, so that despite the fact that the spec document has no footer, but when placed in Book A the footer will appear purple, but when put in Book B it can adapt to the style of that book, without having multiple versions of that spec just to match the color style?

The short answer is "yes."  Use the Synchronize feature of the book operation.
The longest answer is also "yes," but, you need to pay very close attention to how you design the component files for each book. The reason is that Synchronize applies the styles and other settings from a "Style Source" file - a component file in a book - to all selected files in the book; if the style source file differs from a component file that it's synchronized to, the style source's settings "win."
Assuming that the style source file in Book A is correct for synchronizing all the files in Book A, and the style source file in Book B is correct for synchronizing all the files in Book B, then you can include the common file name (or names, if multiple files are involved) in both Book A and Book B, and you can expect the common files to take on the correct formatting when you synchronize each book. You will need to remember to resynchronize each book when you work with it, so that settings from the other book aren't retained.
Beside the color scheme being different in the books, you may find that the page numbers of the common files change, if they're consecutive numbers across chapters. Also, cross-reference formats that include page numbers, and other numbering schemes that continue across files through the books may change.
The medium answer is to create two new books - A1 and B1. Include the style source file for book A in A1, and the style source file for book B in B1; also include the common file(s) in A1 and B1. Also, include the common files in A and B. To use book A, synchronize book A1; this makes the common file(s) appropriate for book A. To use Book B, synchronize book B1; this makes the common file(s) appropriate for book B.

    How can I take my pdf book and revert it to indesign so I can make a few changes on it?

    As far as I know, the best approach is to place pdf-file into a new InDesign document with “Multi Page Importer” script. Then create a new layer above the layer with PDFs and make small edits there creating new objects – text frames, etc – and hiding the original parts in the PDF below.
    That isn't an option - the obscured content will often still export and it'll completely mess up accessibility and compliance.
    The only true option would be to export a Word file from the PDF (using Acrobat Pro), import the text into a brand new INDD document using the usual style-mapping workflows, then export the images from the PDF separately and place them all back into the layout. Quicker than typing it all in again, but only just. Consider it a learning curve.

  • Books and documents

    I'm a novice scripter with very little experience with JavaScript. I'm trying to convert an AppleTalk script to JavaScript. I've been able to create a book and now I want to add documents to it. This is the code I'm using:
    // Create book
    var myBook = app.books.add(fullName=SOIPath+"PW.indb");
    // Add the front cover
    myFilename = myPath+"Modules/my_Cover.indd"
    myBook.bookContents.add(File(myFilename));
    When I call the bookContents.add function, I get a SaveAs dialog with my file name filled in. Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?

    you get dialog box for save INDD or INDB file ??
    do you have these files on disc or you add it as new ??

    Do you mean, you have been creating a Photo Book in iPhoto? Or an iBook in iBook Author?
    If you are asking about a photo book in iPhoto, what was the last you did in iPhoto, before the crash happened?  Did you add a page with a map?
    Then you may have a problem with a bug, where adding a route to a map may render the book unreadable.  In that case the best option is to restore the iPhoto library from the last backup you made, before you added the map to the book.
    It is not possible to open the book and to delete the unreadable page. You can only delete the book and start over, if this bug is the reason for the crashes. See for example this link:  Getting rid of problem photo book

  • In Pages 5.2, some fonts "not available", yet present in Font Book and working in other apps

    Using Pages 5.2, I open a document created in a previous version, and I get error messages about certain fonts within a font family being "not available" in OS X.  However, these supposedly unavailable fonts are present in Font Book and work just fine in all other apps running on OS X.  In fact, I still have the older version of Pages on my system, and it still finds the fonts without issue.  The specific fonts troubling me at the moment are Myriad Pro Semibold It and Myriad Pro Cond.  Pages 5.2 replaces them with Helvetica.  I have wasted hours of time trying to resolve this problem, and I am at a total loss.  What can I do?

    Like so many other thing is is probably gone. Why not use Pages 09 that has about 100 features more than Pages 5. If you haven't deleted it it should still be in Applications/iWork 09 folder.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    Audiobooks are not currently part of the content that can be re-downloaded. You should sync your audiobooks to other devices via iTunes on your computer. If your audiobook didn't download correctly or has other problems, select the content which is causing a problem and use the 'Report a problem' button in Your Purchase History using your computer.
    To copy the audiobooks from one computer to another, use homesharing, put them on a memory stick or use your Dropbox if your computers are networked.

  • I have a 3rd generation ipod nano. I upgraded to lion. I tried to buy an audio book and download it to my nano like I have done at least 50 times before. Now the dialog box states that I need an ipod touch for the same function. MacBook Pro 2008 w/ m.trac

    I have a 3rd generation ipod nano. I recently upgraded to Lion which is causing lots of issues. Aside from that, I went to the Itunes store to purchase books like I have done at least 100 times before with no problems. Now I can by the book and get it to my computer, however when I tried to download the book to my 3rd generation ipod the dialog box informed me that to download any new audiobook purchases I would need an ipod touch. My ipod nano 3rd generation serves my purposes just fine. Why should I be forced to buy something I do not want just to continue something I have always done seamlessly? I know this is more of a rant than a question but I am sure someone else out there has had this happen to them. Maybe you could share your thoughts on how to work around this issue if possible?

    I forgot to add the last obvious and crucial step I had taken - plugging a different iPod into my system. It was also not recognized. That was the final proof I needed to determine if the problem was device or system. But now what?
    I truly appreciate any help I can get!
    Thanks again...

  • HT1386 I just downloaded four books through iTunes. I tried 5 times to sync the books onto my iPhone. They do not appear on the iPhone. Previously purchased books had synced fine. I selected sync all books; and also tried selecting all books individually.

    I just downloaded four books through iTunes. I tried 5 times to sync the books onto my iPhone. They did NOT appear on my iPhone. Previous books synced without problems. I tired syncing ALL books, and also selected book by selecting the new books. No luck. What do/can I do now. iTunes prevents me downloading again. The books show on the computer. I cannot redownload direct to my iPhone now as iTunes indicates the books are already downloaded.What do/can I do now?

  • I'm trying to get organized and I just added a bunch of books and pdfs to my itunes library. They were all added immediately to my ipad and iphone even though, itunes automatically putting books on my idevices

    I'm trying to get organized and I just added a bunch of books and pdfs to my itunes library. They were all added immediately to my ipad and iphone even though I did not want this. I added them to itunes using add to library and I have both devices set to sync only selected books.
    How do I do this in the future so this doesnt happen? Its a lot of work to now manually erase them from each device and it sent my phone over capacity.
    thanks

    I dont see the difference in the posts. I dont think theres anything inaccurate or misleading about what I wrote. The items were immediately added to my ipad and my iphone, even though I have them both set to sync only select items. As soon as I added new titles to my itunes library, they were immediately added to the devices. Not on the next sync. Immediately. Both devices were plugged into the computer at the time. Sorry if I failed to mention they were plugged in but I dont see the signifigance youre making out of it. The problem persists anyway.
    Now that I did a test without the devices plugged in, the new items were still added as soon as I plugged my devices into the computer ( I do not have them set to sync over wifi).
    Since I have both devices set to manually select items to sync, of course I want to manually select new items to sync. For instance, I am not going to read any of these magazines or books on my phone, ever, and I dont want to waste valuable space with them.
    So I'm trying your advice:
    I just tried deselecting sync books. It erased all content from ibooks on my device. I then dragged
    one title onto the device, and it just goes back to syncing select books, with the one title selected.
    It appears that wont work to solve my issue. The next time I add something to itunes it will be put on my phone. Is this really something most people want? To select to manualy control what content is synced, but then have things automatically added. It seems inconsistent to me.

  • I keep trying to load an iphoto book and it keeps getting stuck on a page during the assembly. I am using iphoto 11. What can i do to get this book assembled

    Hi
    I have now tried to load this book twice. The first time it got stuck during the assembly process on page 6 of 66. The second time it got stuck on page 7 of 66. I've done a preview and it assembles fine. Any ideas would be awesome
    thanks

    I have now tried to load this book twice
    By load do you mean order?  It appears that there may be a damaged image on page 6 or 7.
    Export all of the photos on those two pages to the desktop as Kind = Originals.  Open each with Preview and save as a new jpeg file.  Import lthose new files into iPhoto, add them to the book and use them to replace the existing photos in those two pages.  Now try ordering again.
    HOWEWVER, you might try this first: boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and try to order from there.  Keep the pdf Preview files you've created to compare with the printed copy when it arrives.

  • I have installed a trail version of FrameMaker 12 and cannot open the book and chapter files in FrameMaker 8

    Hi
    My colleague and I use FrameMaker 8 but I'm considering whether it would be a good idea to upgrade to FrameMaker 12. So today I installed a trail version of FrameMaker 12.
    Before opening a book file in FM12, I copied it to another folder so I wouldn't mess up anything. Unfortunately, I forgot to copy the chapter files so I opened most of them from FM12. As soon as I found out about it, I copied them to the new folder, but too late.
    Now I'm not able to open the original files from FM8 (and even worse, neither can my colleague). I read somewhere else, that I should save the book file in the .MIF format (I tried both 12 and 7.0) and then open it from FM8. I tried that, but I still cannot open the chapter files.
    I get an error message saying: "Althoug xxx.fm appears to be a FrameMaker document, it can't be opened with this release of the product".
    I didn't make any changes to the chapter files when I looked at them in FM 12.
    What should I do? I case we decide not to upgrade, we will not be able to access this book which is a big problem. I already have some small changes that have to be made.
    Thanks in advance for your help!

    Back saving to MIF should work, but it’s probably faster to just retrieve a backup of the FM8 files & books and restore them over your botched FM12 versions. Then take a copy of that backup and put it on the trial machine to play away without impacting anything else.

  • Topichead does not convert properly when ditamap saved as book and hierarchy not maintained

    I'm new to DITA and piloting some documents in FrameMaker 12, trying to get the output that I need.
    I have created a ditamap with a structure as follows:
    Map title
    - Concept A
    - Topichead
       - Task A
       - Task B
    - Concept B
      - Task C
       - Task D
    I would like this to ouptut a PDF with TOC and bookmarks as follows:
    Map title => book title
    - Concept A => Chapter 1
    - Topichead => Chapter 2
       - Task A => Chapter 2.1
       - Task B => Chapter 2.2
    - Concept B => Chapter 3
      - Task C => Chapter 3.1
      - Task D => Chapter 3.2
    To do this I save the ditamap as a "Book 12.0 with fm components (*.book)" and set the Bookmark levels in the PDF Setup as follows:
    ChapterTitle
    head.0
    Title
    title.0
    .title.1
    ..title.2
    ...title.3
    However, the output systematically comes out wrong because the Topichead element, which is just a title and is not attached to any topic, is not taken into account as a hierarchical element in the output. It generates an empty fm document containing just the topichead title, output as a ChapterTitle or Title depending on whether I set its toc attribute to yes. But the TOC is all wrong - instead of taking Task A and Task B as children of Chapter 2 it puts them all at level 1 so I get:
    - Concept A => Chapter 1
    - Topichead => ignored
       - Task A => Chapter 2
       - Task B => Chapter 3
    - Concept B => Chapter 4
      - Task C => Chapter 4.1
      - Task D => Chapter 4.2
    If I output using the bog-standard DITA-OT instead of fancy and expensive FrameMaker, everything comes out correctly.
    Is there any way to correct this?
    Thanks,
    Archaeopteryx

    Hi Archaeopteryx...
    I beieve that FM only uses the elements from topics to create the output .. as you're seeing, headings in the map are ignored. I also believe that the process that FM uses to aggregate the topics into FM files is hard-coded somewhere in the DITA plugin, and not exposed for modification .. so aside from developing a plugin to modify the process, I think you're out of luck if you're using the default DITA support. The only solution would be to include title-only topics in the structure that provide those headings rather than using a topichead.
    However, you might want to check out DITA-FMx, in which the aggregation process is controlled by XSLT that you are free to modify. The default book-build process in DITA-FMx also ignores these map elements, and assumes that all content is defined in topics, but you could tweak the XSLT to include topicheads as topic headings in the generated book.

    There should be a Library button on the top left. If not ap the middle of the screen to get it to appear.

  • Interesting difference between books and tutorials

    I started coding in Java about four years ago. When I started I learned from a book (that I no longer have), I think it was "Sam's Teach Yourself Java in 24 Hours". I was just a kid then and I became fairly proficient in all of the basic requirements and such. Now, four years later, I am looking into getting back to Java when I can find the time, and possibly getting a certification. Instead of the book, I now use the online tutorials and API docs. Something I noticed about the tutorials is that they use coding methods that I never saw in the book. For instance from this tutorial on using the SpringLayout, the code follows this syntax:
    import /*neccessary items*/
    public class SpringDemo1 {
         * Create the GUI and show it.  For thread safety,
         * this method should be invoked from the                  <----I didn't add this. Guessing it has something
         * event-dispatching thread.                                    to do with preventing the thread from crashing...?
        private static void createAndShowGUI() {
            //Create and set up the window.
            JFrame frame = new JFrame("SpringDemo1");
            frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            //SpringLayout code here....
            frame.pack();
            frame.setVisible(true);
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            javax.swing.SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
                public void run() {
                    createAndShowGUI();
    }whereas, when I learned from the book, I always did this and I still do:
    import /*neccessary items*/
    public class myClass extends JFrame {
        public myClass() {
            //set up GUI here
        public static void main(String args[]) {
            myClass mc = new myClass();
    }If I am going to get my certification, I don't want to be using practices that could cause a program to crash and get someone angry at me. If I am doing something wrong, please chew me out. It's better than losing a job...

    The book is old-fashioned, that's all. Neither version of the code is so bad that it will crash and you will lose your job and become a drug addict accosting people on the street for money.
    The "extends JFrame" version was the usual way to write things back in the early days of Java. And then people started thinking more about object orientation, and noticed that there was nothing in most Swing programs which created a modified JFrame. They simply used the features of a JFrame to get their work done.
    So under the flag of "Prefer composition to inheritance", the OO people rewrote the standard Swing application to do that. And so they should... Java is an object-oriented language, after all, so why not do things right? Let's not extend JFrame (inheritance) if we can just create one and use it (composition).
    Of course they couldn't go back and change all the paper books and all the thousands of programs that people had already written in the old way, but they could change the tutorials. And they did.
    So my suggestion would be to follow the style shown in that tutorial. You won't lose your job over it. In fact being able to explain why you did it might even improve your status at your job.
