Books/IDE question from a newbie

I'm an experienced developer of Microsoft technologies, but I'm at the beginning-of-the-road with regard to Java. I just purchased "Core JAVA 2 Volume 1-Fundamentals" and "Designing Enterprise Applications with the J2EE Platform, Second Edition".
Can anyone suggest other "must have" books for developers who are new to Java? Also, beside the ever popular and robust "visual notepad", what is the best IDE for Java development?
Thanks for your help!

Hi!
Two good books are:
Java Cookbook, O'Reilly
Java In A Nutshell, O'Reilly
I used them daily as a reference.
A good and free IDE I am using is called JCreator. It's pretty simple but is enough for me. Some other good IDE's is:
Forte
JBuilder
Best of luck!

  • Question from a Newbie/AudioBooks

Hi, I had a Motorola phone with iTunes and recently purchased a Blackberry Curve 8310. My question is how can I get the audio books I purchased from the iTunes store to open on my Blackberry? or any other reader????
Please help...I really don't want to purchase the same books from another source. Thank you all for reading my post.

  • Question from a Newbie wireless user

Please excuse the naivete of this question. I'm completely ignorant on everything pertaining to wireless internet. My old Powerbook 400mHz G4 Titanium has never had wireless of any kind until this week when I bought a PCMCIA wireless adapter. Never used wireless, don't know anything about it.
I started following the instructions on the PCM adapter this morning to get it all set up. I plan to toggle back and forth between wired internet at home and the wireless adapter when I'm out on the road.
I was surprised when I saw the window where I enter my settings that there were no less than ten different internet services flying around the room in my house! I guess I have a lot of wireless neighbors and I could easily access their bandwidth.
I imagine the same would go when I'm in town sitting in the library. They welcome you to use their internet access, but it's in a busy end of town and I'm sure I'll see numerous services available there too.
So I'm clueless on this topic. Again, I've never used wireless internet before - but I've read about these guys who've been arrested in front of coffee houses for stealing bandwidth at WiFi hotspots when they weren't paying customers.
What's the deal with sitting in your living room and using your neighbor's internet access? I know it's not ethical and we should all get our own, but what are legalities? And say I hopped on to someone's internet access +quite accidentally+...how does one get caught if you do it quietly? And have people actually gotten into trouble beyond these two guys that made national news?
I guess my main question is exactly how careful do I need to be to set the correct access service when there are ten immediately available in a public place? Can I just click on whatever signal is strongest and log on without fear of being caught?
I hope somebody knowledgeable can set me straight on this.
    Thanks.
    -JOHN
ps. Here's the news item on these guys stealing wireless internet access:

You may find this technical article I've written helps you:

It is fairly long, but it was originally written in response to some questions from a non-technical friend, and so I've tried to keep it as straightforward as possible.

  • Miscellaneous - Questions from a Newbie

I just got my iPhone this week and some questions popped up. I know that some of them might fit better in other categories than "basics"...
    1. Sync with Outlook - I was under the impression that the iPhone syncs up with Outlook but:
    a) How can you mark an Outlook Appointment as "privat" so not everyone in your company who has access to you calender can read it?
    b) Why are no documents synced, which are in a Calender Appointment save in Notes? (The Text in Notes will sync, but no PDFs for example...)
    c) When I reply to an E-Mail, the info that an when I replyed is not saved in Outlook
    d) in Outlook I can mark e-mails with priorities... this is not shown on the iPhone
    e) can the Auto-reply or Out-of-the-Office message set or changed from the iPhone?
    2. Mail
    a) I have differnt E-Mail accounts and would like to use different signitures for each account... the is an App, but thats too complicated. Is there a way to have an automated signature for each acount (this should be a basic feature!!!)
    b) Can I save e-mail attachments in specific folders? (eg a word doc)
    3. Media
    a) How can i created different Folders in the photoalbum, so I can sort them and don't have to scroll for ages...
    b) Can I get access to the Folders on the iPhone, so I can copy (for example Music) for differnt sources to the iPhone?
    c) Is there another Sync programm than iTunes?
    d) Can I delete Apps which I don't use (eg. Weather, Stockmarket...), but which are allready installed when i bought it
    4. Sounds and Alerts
    a) Can i create my own ringtones (eg an mp3)?
    b) Can I add other alert sounds (for E-mails for example)
    c) How can I change sounds for different Events (New Mail, Alert...)?
    5. Connectivity
    a) Can I sync the iPhone over bluetooth?
    b) Can I use the iPhone as a modem for my laptop? how?
    c) If stolen, can I remotely delete it or search it via GPS?
    6. Battery
    a) is it normal that when you use push mail and make a couple of calls a day the battery only last for max. 20 hours?
Thats the first lot of question from week one... Thanks in advance for replys and the awaiting answers
    Axl

I can answer some of them:
Is there a way to have an automated signature for each acount (this should be a basic feature!!!)
    No
    b) Can I save e-mail attachments in specific folders? (eg a word doc)
No. You can't save attachments - just view them
    b) Can I get access to the Folders on the iPhone, so I can copy (for example Music) for differnt sources to the iPhone?
No. The iPhone cannot be directly accessed like a hard disk. There are third-party apps that allow this to a certain degree, but you can't add Media to the iPhone via this method.
    c) Is there another Sync programm than iTunes?
Not really. There's some that may do some features, but not a complete replacement for it. What's wrong with iTunes?
    d) Can I delete Apps which I don't use (eg. Weather, Stockmarket...),
No. But you can move them to a different Home screen.
    a) How can i created different Folders in the photoalbum, so I can sort them and don't have to scroll for ages...

    a) Can i create my own ringtones (eg an mp3)?
Yes. Google "create iPhone ringtone" for a variety of options
    a) Can I sync the iPhone over bluetooth?
    No.
    b) Can I use the iPhone as a modem for my laptop? how?
Yes, although it depends where you are. See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3574
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2756
    c) If stolen, can I remotely delete it or search it via GPS?
Yes. See MobileMe's "Find My iPhone" feature:
    http://www.apple.com/mobileme/features/iphone.html
    a) is it normal that when you use push mail and make a couple of calls a day the battery only last for max. 20 hours?
Quite possibly. Battery life seems to be reduced in the latest firmware and lots of people are awaiting a fix from Apple.

  • Simple opinion question from a newbie about IDE's

I have been looking around for the best architecture for a n-tier client server app. I have been using the jsp/servlet architecture for a while, and have recently found out about web-start . There seems to me to be a great advantage to be able to maintain state on the client, as opposed to having multiple roundtrips to the server.
    My questions are:
    1) What is the easiest (i.e., any open source tools/ide's?) way to build a full featured gui for a desktop application that will connect to servlets or web services and can be deployed via web-start? I would prefer a gui builder with many available widgets - are there any out there?
    2) what is the difference between JNLP and web-start?
    3) How do you bind gui controls (swing/swt/whatever) to the data? I.E., I used to work in Borland c++ builder and there were data-aware controls. Does java have any similar controls that can be bound to a datasources?

    1. I'm sure there are a few out there, but the ones I've tried created crap code, so I usually roll my own.
    2. Java WebStart is the name of the JNLP implementation that comes with Sun's JRE (but the two are often used as synonyms). There are other JNLP projects, but most of them seem to be dead.
    3. I'll leave this to someone else.

  • Top 3 questions from a newbie

Hi folks, I have performed a basic search and didn't turn up an answer to these so am looking for some guidance please.
I love my Nokia Lumia 800 and think Nokia Here (nee Maps) and especially Nokia Drive (which I use every week) are awesome but here are my three questions/requests and hope Nokia is also monitoring these posts.
    1. Could we please be told if Nokia are working on a way to use your address book contacts to set a destination. I used to have this on Windows Mobile 6.5 and most other smartphone OS's have this. I find it hard to believe that Nokia with such innovation and being a recognised leader in mapping that this isn't available.
    2. Can someone tell me how to enter a junction of two roads into Nokia Drive and Nokia Here as every combination I have tried doesn't seem to work e.g. High street and Bond street
    3. Could we please be told if Nokia are working on a way to use a separate volume / audio session to avoid impacting any playing music when using Nokia drive or maps, this will allow a driver to lower the volume of the GPS app and leave the music at the correct level without impacting it. I used to have this on the Smartphone TomTom software on Windows mobile 6.5 also
Thanks and apologies if these questions have already been dealt with elsewhere

About n°1: the method I was told to use does not work:
To navigate to contact: from the contact list, open a contact, click on "map home address", this starts Here maps, then click the "directions" button, then enter, then choose the car, this starts Here Drive.
The problem with this method is that at the "direction" step, the destination is not is exact address you're heading to, it's just the town.
So I still haven't found a way to do that. It seems pretty simple for Nokia to repair the missing link between here maps and Here Drive: just set the full address in the "destination" text field mentioned above.

  • Email questions from a newbie

I just got my curve 8320.  I have the BES and also an internet email account on the blackberry.  I have 2 questions:
    1.  Is there a way to keep the 2 accounts from integrating.  I would like to keep my personal emails separate from by business emails
    2.  I would like to have the choice to delete my internet email from just the blackberry or from my isp's server.
I have been thumbing around this thing for 2 days to figure these out.  Anyone have any ideas.
Oh one more thing.  How do you know when you need a memory card, and can the blackberry support micro SDHC?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    1. Yes, with Empower BES Email Inbox. Google it. It will pull your BES mail to its own folder.
    2. Messages > Options > Email Reconciliation > Delete On = set as desired for each email address you have on the device.

    Hi,there.
I am a newbie on oracle database, and now I meet a question. It is said in the book that you can use:
    create user username

    to create a user.But when I test:

  • Questions from a Newbie - Please Help by Responding

Okay, I just received a new iPod (30GB, black) as a gift and have a few questions.
I apologize in advance for any repeat in them (with respect to being answered in other posts), but I am confused and have a headache from trying to read all of the links provided in responses, etc. I just want to understand procedures is all. I know the questions may seem trivial, but I am a complete newbie at this iPod thing.
(1.) Could someone please explain the entire authorization/deauthorization details to me with respect to iTunes and various computers.
Specifically, if I download a song from the iTunes store on my desktop, how do I get that same file on my laptop and then authorize my laptop to play the song? From what I gathered in reading, I have to authorize my laptop to play the iTunes song downloaded on my desktop, but I do not understand how I transfer the song to the other computer's iTune software?
Do I burn files to a CD, disk, etc. and then transfer via that method and then authorize the songs in iTunes, so that the songs are in both places (desktop and laptop)? Could someone give me step-by-step instructions on this, or link to somewhere that does?
(2.) Could I have different songs on my desktop versus laptop, connect my iPod to one or the other, and send the songs to the iPod? From what I read, I believe the answer to this is yes (I believe I am permitted to connect my iPod to up to 5 different computers to load music from iTunes?).
Should I do this, do I need to authorize anything or just connect my iPod to the computer?
Thank you in advance for any response(s) offered.
Again, I apologize for reposting these questions, but I am having a hard time pulling everything together into a succinct answer I can follow.
    Sincerely,
    wkkunkle

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    1) There are many options. Here are some of them...
iTunes: How to copy music between authorized computers
Once the file is on your laptop, just play it in iTunes. iTunes will ask you for your iTunes Music Store account information and then authorize your computer.
    2) This is what you have to do...
    Using iPod with multiple computers
Authorizing is really only for the music store and purchased songs, not for iPods and which computers they connect to.

  • 2 Questions from a newbie

Hi all, I just switched and am totally new to OSX. I've think the Mini is a miracle of innovation and design. I love it.
My 2 Q's, which are not Mini questions per se, are these...
    1. In Safari, when I view a webpage, the text is a bit small for me. I know I can use the Apple key with "+" to increase it. Works fine, however if I close Safari and re-open it, it defaults back to the original size. I also have found that in the advanced settings you can change font size. This works for certain webpages such as Yahoo, but for most others, like for example, CNN.com, this doesn't work, and when you re-open Safari, you have to re-adjust the size. No biggie, certainly, but any ideas??
    2. I got one of those "mighty mice." Nice. Can I program any of the keys to close an app? I know that in the Sys Preferences you can program the mice keys, to Expose, Dashboard, Application, etc. But can it be programmed to close? I know I can press the Apple key with W, but is this possible to do this from the mouse?
    Thanks!
    Tim

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Switched
    1. I did a bit of a search on MacUpdate for a shareware application that might do this, but I didn't see anything right off You might try a search of either MacUpdate or VersionTracker for "Safari" & see if any can change the setting for you.
    2. I use SteerMouse to configure additional options on my Mighty Mouse. You do need to remember though that unlike Windows, closing (⌘ + W) all active windows in an application does not quit the application. You need to Quit the application - ⌘ + Q or from the application menu.

  • Keyword questions from the newbie

Would anyone mind helping me figure out if there are conventions for entering Keywords into pdf Metadata? I have been having a conversation on another forum about Keywords for images and there is some question in my mind as to whether I should use quotes around a term such as "plate of shrimp" or if I should just use Plate Shrimp. One poster said they were avoiding using spaces for some reason and that they use PlateShrimp.
Anyway, am I correct in assuming that all this goes back to how google searches Metadata in pdf's and/or images??
Does anyone know where to find some of the conventions or standards associated with this? For instance, doesn't google search the /content/ of the pdf and if so wouldn't a keyword have to be /different/ from one in the METADATA? Or ostensibly google would rank a keyword /higher/ and the other Maetadata in a pdf would be associated with Contact and/or Copyright info?
I am a total newbie with this so I am trying to winnow things down here with a little help if possible. I've been able to find info on IPTC Metadata but my assumption is that this only relates to images.
    Thanks.

    1. Is there a "recent documents" on a Mac?
Only under the programs you use like Pages.
    2. When I have a disc in the notebook and I pick up the computer is it normal for the disc to grind inside the unit? It sounds like a garbage disposal.
This happens because you move the macbook and the disk is spinning. If you don't tilt it this usually is OK but tilting causes the noises your hearing and it is damaging the disk.
    3. What is the American flag in the bar at the top right of the desktop? It wasn't there yesterday.
It is the input menu for special characters and keyboard viewer if both are turned on under system preferences. Look under International Input Menu.
    4. Can I run Final Cut Express on the Macbook without problems, or should I have gotten a Pro?
Yes I use it and it works fine. Max out your RAM for the best results.

  • Two questions from a newbie who knows nothing

I have set up my 8330 to receive forwarded emails from my cox.net email account.  However, while on my home computer the spam emails do not get to my inbox, they are immediately put into the junk folder, these spam emails are forwarded to my BlackBerry.  Question (1): Is there anyway to only receive the emails that actually get into the Inbox folder on Microsoft Outlook?
Question (2): Periodically, I get a message on my BlackBerry that says it's "...being used to carry data between the BlackBerry and associated server...please do not delete or respond, it will be handled by the server."  These never go away unless I do delete them the next day.  Does this mean I have messed up something in the setup?
    Thank you very much...
    SedonaBob

    Hi SedonaBob
1- The BlackBerry Internet Service will forward any messages that appear on your server.  Your spam filter most likely is running only on your local machine so it is only controlling spam on the computer, not on your actual mailbox.
2-These network@etp messages are normally cause by installing the Desktop manager to use BES or Redirector instead of BlackBerry Internet Service.  To check if this is the case - if you have an "Email Settings" icon on your Desktop Manager, it is installed for BES or Redirector.  To fix it you must first reinstall (or modify) your Desktop Manager to use BlackBerry internet service.  Next, on your handheld,  you need to go to options, advanced options, service book and delete any service books that start with Desktop (cmime and cical).  Highlight the service book, click the menu key and select delete.
    Cheers

  • IWeb questions from a newbie

    Hi everyone...
I am looking into making my own simple website and am trying to decide whether to make one from scratch or use iWeb and a .mac account. Any advice for the following questions would be appreciated!
    1. I see a lot of iWeb sites that have the ugly "web.mac.com" preceeding the site name. Other iWeb sites don't have this prefix so obviously there is a way to do without it. How do you eliminate that prefix?
    2. My site would only hold a resume and half a dozen short vid clips. But I've noticed on other iWeb sites that the video loads EXTREMELY slow (on a high speed cable line!). Is this a flaw with iWeb (is there a recommended compression rate for vids to play on iWeb)?
    3. When I bought my G5 it came with Garage Band, iMovie, iPhoto, etc. (everything EXCEPT iWeb). I noticed that in order to purchase iWeb, you have to buy all these apps again which seems like a waste! Is there a way to buy or download JUST iWeb?
    4. I've done lots of research on iWeb and on Amazon.com virtually everyone prefers iWeb '06 over iWeb '08. Isn't the newer version supposed to be an improvement? Does anyone know what the fuss is about...and is it a better idea to purchase the older version ('06)?
Thanks for any help you might have!

    1. It's called personal domain. You have to buy a domain at a domain regitsrar like GoDaddy. Example: yourdomain.com
Or Publish to a folder and upload to a server other than .mac
    2. It's not an iWeb issue. It's a hosting issue, thus an issue about .Mac. Publishing to a hosting other than .Mac speeds up things.
    3. iWeb first appeared with iWeb '06 in iLife '06 package. You maybe have iLife '05 or deleted it by accident (or not by accident)
And no it isn't a waste as the applications are new versions, thus improved. New features included and so on. And no there's no way to legally download/buy only iWeb.
    4. I like iWeb '08 a lot more than iWeb '06.
There are compatibility issues with the worst browser of the world, also commonly called InternetExplorer. But it's not an iWeb issue... It's an IE issue.

  • A few questions from a newbie!

    Hello!
So, I am VERY new to using Mac productions and I just got my Macbook recently.
I have a few questions that may seem to have a very simple and obvious answer but like I said, this is all new to me...
    1. Do I have to install a anti-virus/spam program? If so, which one?
    2. Time Machine- this is the program to back up files right? when I try to set it up it doesn't give me any options for a back up disk.
Anything else that I should defiantly know please let me know!
    Thanks so much!

Not unless you want to. I have had Macs for 2 years and never had a problem. This is a good one if you decide to install one. ClamXav
    2. Time Machine- this is the program to back up files right? when I try to set it up it doesn't give me any options for a back up disk.
You need an external hard drive attached to use with Time Machine. This explains it.

Anything else that I should defiantly know please let me know!
This is info that will help you get the best life from your battery.
It is OK to leave your battery hooked to the charger most of the time. The only time I unhook mine from the charger is when I calibrate or for a few minutes to use in another room. Have you calibrated your battery yet? You should calibrate every two months or so to keep the battery fully functioning. If you use your MacBook infrequently, it’s best to re-calibrate the battery at least once a month.
It is best not to use your battery unless you need to. Some people have hurt their batteries by charging then discharging every time they use the MacBook. This will age a battery very fast and cause you to buy a battery sooner than you should have too. Don't discharge the battery just because you used it. Li-Ion batteries prefer small charges over big ones. Use it and then plug it in as soon as you can. The only time my Battery is ever fully discharged is when I'm doing a calibration.

  • A question from a newbie

Hello. I just got a new Macbook, and so far I love it. No battery or wi-fi problems (yet). I am actually enjoying figuring out how to do things differently on a Mac. But I do have one question:
On my previous Windows PC, after I would sync content with my iPod, and after ejecting it from iTunes, I would then have to 'Safely Remove Hardware' from Windows. I have not been able to find this function on my Macbook (and do I even need to do it once the iPod is ejected from iTunes?). I just want to make sure I don't muck up my iPod (two years and not a single issue with it!). Thank you for any advice you may have.

Once you eject any Firewire or USB device all you need do is unplug it. No other function is required. The 'ejection' handles both of the Windows' requirements.
