Books in collection will not open or download.

All but three of my books have downloaded to my collection and will open without issue. I have tried hiding and unhiding these books, deleting my entire collection and checking account for available downloads. They show in my collection as being in iCloud but won't open or dowload. Has anyone else experienced this problem or found a solution?

The version 1.0.1 update broke iBooks on my Mac Pro ... I was able to download and view books with 1.0, but with 1.0.1, double-clicking any previously downloaded book asks for my iTunes password, which I give, and then nothing happens.
Double-clicking a free/public domain book opens the book without problems.
Clicking the "iBooks Store" button correctly shows my account info. So, something seems hosed with the digital rights management and/or iCloud etc.
Double-clicking a book still in the cloud changes the book icon to pastel colors and shows the start of the progress bar and then gives a message "An unknown error has occured" cancel/retry. Retry just gives the same message.
I reported all of this via 'feedback', but am curious if anyone else has had issues or has an idea of how to fix this?

2-Uninstalled Apple Mobile Device Manager
3-Uninstalled Apple Software Update Manager
4-Uninstalled iTunes
5-Uninstalled iCloud
6-Uninstalled any left over Apple software
7-Restarted Computer
8-Installed iTunes
9-Restarted Computer
I did not install iCloud. I was able to authorize my PC and Sync did work.

Pdf files will not open upon downloading

I download a lot of pdf docs for work and want them to open automatically upon download so I can screen them. Since upgrading to Safari 5.1, when I download files (which has gotten much more cumbersome) they do not automatically open upon download. Yes, I DO have the "open safe files after downloading" option checked in Preferences. Any other thoughts? A solution would be most helpful. (If anyone has a solution to how I can automatically download files as easily as in prior versions, that would be greatly appreciated also.)

You downloaded it but, did you install it?
If in Windows, you can try using Windows Explorer to navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement.

Pages will not open a downloaded .pages document from iCloud because index.xml file not found?

New to using iCloud. I created a large pages document on Mac Air and saved it to my iCloud account. Found it at home on desktop Mac and downloaded it. No problem. However, it will not open due to the index.xml file not being found. What should I do to open this document? I've tried several things and no luck yet. Thanks for any tips! :-)

Try this. It worked for me:
1. Single click on the document. This will "highlight" the document icon, but not invoke the error message.
2. Click on "File" in the menu.
3. Scroll down to "Open With".
4. One of my choices in the "Open With" selection is Pages (default) (5.0.1)
5. Click on that choice and the document should open.
In my "Open WIth" selection there is also a Pages (4.0.4), but that didn't work for me.
Now, here is a caveat. If before you open your document you instead first click on an open Internet window, then the "Open With" selection disappears from the File menu. In that case just single click again on the document icon again and the "Open With" selection returns.

Ipad will not open any downloaded apps

My ipad will not open any apps that I downloaded. How do I fix this?

If they are crashing - try downloading another app - any free app is fine.
If they will not open at all when you tap on the icons - try restarting or resetting the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

Address Book 'Frozen' and Will Not Open

My Address Book has completely frozen and will not open. Whenever I try to open the application, it just 'hangs' there, without actually opening. It was working fine only a few hours ago.
I've tried the following:
*Restarting my MacBook 3 times
*Restoring Address Book from Time Machine
*Deleting Address Book and reinstalling from the Leopard Installer disk
Nevertheless, Address Book will not open. Any suggestions?

I fixed the problem! I'm including the solution here, in case anyone else has the same problem.
It appears that my Smart Groups somehow caused my Address Book to freeze up. Unfortunately, you can't delete your Smart Groups while the application is open. Instead, try this:
1.) Close down Address Book
2.) Go to Applications/AppleScript/Script Editor
3.) Enter the following into Script Editor, replacing NAME OF SMART GROUP with the actual name:

delete group "NAME OF SMART GROUP"
end tell
4.) Click "Run."
5.) Reopen Address Book. This should fix the problem. At least it did for me.

Quit Safari.
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the menu bar, copy the text on the line below into the box that opens, and press return:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
A Finder window will open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Desktop, leaving the window open.
Launch Safari and test. Its settings will have reverted to what they were they first time you launched it. If it works as expected, recreate the settings and delete the item you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, quit Safari again and put the file you moved back where it was, overwriting the newer one created in its place.

Why my I Books will not open a downloaded book?

Downloaded a book from the apple store into iBooks.
I can see the book and it said it is downloaded but can not open it.
Operating system 7.0.

Close iBooks, reboot the iPad and try again.
Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the iBooks app then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
If that doesn't work, delete the book and download it again. In the iBooks app, tap the edit button, select the book by tapping on it, then tap Delete in the upper left corner. Go back and download the book again. You will not be charged for the download as long as you use the same Apple ID.

FF4 will not open after download... "you can't open the application "firfox" because it is not supported on this application." If 4 doesn't work on OS 10.5.8, then how do I get the old firfox back?

I downloaded the FF4 update and it has the "no smoking" symbol over the FF icon. When you attempt to open the app it states: "you can't open the application "firfox" because it is not supported on this application."

Are you sure you downloaded the .dmg file? It should have automounted for you and opened in finder. Then all you have to do is drag the FF4 icon over the Applications link in that finder window and it will install.
I seem to recall seeing the error you noted when I accidentally clicked a windows .exe file on my Mac.
Also, if you visit firefox.com from your Mac, it should be prompting you to download the .dmg anyway. The only way you could get the .exe would be to click the "other operating systems" link below the main download button.

Organizer will not open after downloading, but Editor will

When I downloaded the trial and after purchasing the product, Organizer will not work properly. I cannot open it at all; however, Editor opens and works just fine. My Mac is completely up to date and I'm not sure what else I can do.

Bypass the Unwelcome Screen by creating Desktop shortcuts for the Organizer and the Editor, and restarting your computer.
The Editor's executable is:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 10\PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe"
The Organizer's executable is:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Elements 10 Organizer\PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe"
The Unwelcome Screen leaves a zombie process running which prevents the actual program from launching again.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know your password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

I recently downloaded a book and it will not open due to being incorrectly formatted. Even though I downloaded this FROM iTunes!!!! What is going on, I have the latest OS and iBook version....??????????

I recently downloaded a book "In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day" and iBooks tells me its incorrectly formatted even though I downloaded this from iTunes and have the latest version of the iBooks app. What is going on? I want a refund if this doesn't work. My other books open fine.

Before asking for a refund, also try deleting the book and redownloading it.
If you find that the iBookstore is does not meet your needs, you can try one of the others like Kindle, Nook, Kobo, Googlebooks, or Sony.
