Books on iPad with translation?

Hello,
I am thinking about buying a iPad. I like to use it mostly for reading books. But it would be only useful for me, if I can use, while reading, an dictionary.
My idea is: if I read a book in English for example and need a meaning of a word, I would mark the word and a dictionary opens and shows me the translation in German (or any other language I choose) of this word...
So far my wish. Does anybody know if that would be possible with the iPad? There are some experiences with such a function?
Thanks for help.
Anne

No new dictionary features have been added to iBooks.  As for other ebook reader apps, I doubt you will find any info here, you will just have to try them yourself.  As far as I know, none of them advertise what you want as one of their features.
PS  This page does say that the Kindle app for iPad has a German lookup capability.

Can I share my books on iPad with someone in family that has a different computer and email address

If you got them from iBooks, then no. As far as I know, iBooks are linked to the Apple ID that downloaded them. If you got them via Kindle or the such, the apps may have a sharing function.
If it's another app, then whatever  the rules of that app says is what works.
If you're looking for e-books on a budget, check out your local library. Many have e-books you can check out for a period of time, and they either work with an app or are PDF files with some sort of time limit encoding in them

I had purchased an audio book from itunes on my iPad and when I synced my iPad with my computer, my audiobook disappeared. I have already purchased this audiobook, so now I just need to know how to get it back because it is not on iPad anymore. I don't think the audiobook was backed up to icloud but I have the receipt to prove I purchased it. Is there anyway I can get it back?

"If I purchase an audio book in iTunes on my iPad why can't I listen to it on my Mac? "
You can.  Why do you think you cannot?
If you purchased it on your ipad, then you would have to transfer it to your computer. File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.
You can then listen to it on your computer.

  • TS4062 I have synced my iTunes music in iPad with my new iPhone. Problem two audio books which I purchased from I tunes failed to come on my iPhone. Help!

How do I sync audio books from iTunes in iPad with my new iPhone 4???

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")
Providing you are simply updating your existing details and not changing to another account, when you delete your account, all the data that is synced with iCloud will also be deleted from the device (but not from iCloud), but will be synced back to your device when you login again.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your computer, you need to sign out of the account from your computer first, then sign back in using your updated details. (System Preferences > iCloud, click the sign out button)
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iTunes account on your iOS device, you need to sign out from your iOS device first, then sign back in using your updated details. (Settings > store, scroll down and tap your ID)
If you are using iMessages or FaceTime, you will also need to log out and into your ID there too.

  • I can not get imac w/Snow Leopard's address book to sync with ipad 1correctly? I only get about half the contacts?

I have tried repeatedly to get my address book on my imac w/ snow leopard to sync to my ipad 1 correctly and have failed every time. I only get about 1/3 the number of contacts and they don't all even correlate with the ones on the imac. Like one will have full middle name and the other only the initial. I don't know where itunes is getting these contacts but doesn't match those in my address book. I keep telling itunes to replace the contacts on the ipad with those on my mac but it doesnt work. Can't do it with icloud cause snow leopard doesn't support, it still wants to use the non existant mobile me format. Hope someone can help. I added the all amnually once before but they screwed up when I sync each time.

Thanks for your response Ernie. You are correct in that whenever you type a series of letters, Address Book (as it always has) finds every single thing with that combination of letters - Names, businesses, adjectives, people's dogs' names, letters in product serial numbers, etc. This is useful for finding a subject on the Web, or finding all documents related to 'iPhoto' on your Mac, etc., but not useful, quick or convenient when trying to find one person to call in your Address Book (which is what people use Address Book for).
What is DIFFERENT in the Snow Leopard version, is that the ability to type one letter to instantly go to last names with that letter has been removed. Previously, you could easily find 'Bill Tilman' in one second by simply typing 'T'. Now you get every word that starts with T and all the words in the card that have a T in them. If you type out a full name like 'Bill', it finds every person named Bill. No one would ever want to find all their contacts named Bill to call them. You could type out the full last name 'Tilman', but there again you are forced to type out a complete name to do a search. It would actually be quicker to scroll down and find it manually. The ability to type a single letter to find the last name (or business name) of a contact you needed to call, was much quicker and easier than having to type out the entire name.

There are some threads on the use of Calibre with the iPad on their forums. This thread might be of help:

and if not searching that forum for "iPad" may turn up additional suggestions.

If I synchronise my Ipad with my computer, will books I have bought from Kindle on my ipad be saved in itunes through the sync or will I lose them?
    Vivushka

You will not lose them and you will not be able to transfer them into iTunes. Your Kindle books are maintained in your Amazon account, not in iTunes. You manage all of your Kindle books with Amazon.com.
However, if you have never synced with iTunes before, you may need to make the iTunes library your syncing library. Have you synced with this computer before?

I have sync'ed my ipad with my new mac book air, but some of the images did not download to the computer.

Iphoto does not see these images.  How can I download them into my computer?
I have tried using a PC to view the iPad as a HD, but it also does not find the images... yet I can visualize them!!!  I need to make sure I do not lose these pictures!!!!  How can I get them into my new computer?

In iOS 7 you cannot transfer photos and videos anymore to or from your iPad as if it were a USB device.
You must sync them using iTunes:

With iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via control-S on a PC, option-command-S on a Mac. If you are trying to get it to the iBooks app then with the sidebar enabled the process should be similar to how it was on previous versions of iTunes e.g. add it to your iTunes library via File > Add To Library, connect the iPad and select it on the left-hand sidebar, and then use the Books tab on the right-hand side to select and sync it to the iBooks app.

  • Should I get an iPad mini or iPad with Retina Display?

Help! I'm about to start college soon and I was thinking of buying an iPad. Thing is, I'm not sure which one I should get. I'll mainly be using the iPad for eBooks, taking notes, and other class related things. I just want to here some other peoples opinion on which iPad I should get. Should it be the iPad mini or the iPad with Retina Display?
I realize that I could just bring my laptop but I don't want to lug it around and have to carry the charger cords and all that.

    Hi,
First, I think the size of the ipad is very individual. Some love the idea of 'put a mini in your pocket and go.' Others want to hang out somewhere and read more easily, watch movies/tv, etc. among other things, on a bigger screen. If you are near an Apple store, you might want to take a trip there and check out what your preference might be.
If money is an issue, as it is for many students or parents with students in college, consider looking in the Apple refurbished store. And this is because more important than the physical size of the ipad, is the AMOUNT OF SPACE you will buy vs. how much space you will end up needing as a college student.
My son got his ipad 2 refurb in the Apple refurb store before he started his junior year in college last year. He thought 32 gb would be more than enough, but some time during the school year, he used about 50 gb of his ipad 2 64 gb which was the way to go.  He has to have apps and space for required financial newspapers, pdf's for class, text books, and of course, movies, tv shows, and music, and all that goes with it - netflix, hbo go, mlb, nfl, and other sports apps... The list goes on.
Following is a little more detail from a post I responded to this past week.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22601600?ac_cid=ha123456#22601600
PLEASE NOTE - Whatever you decide - I read about an app last year and my son got it. It allows him to use anything on his imac (in his dorm) on his ipad and it works anywhere on campus. For example. if he's working on a paper on MS Word or Excel on his imac, and he's somewhere else on campus, he can actually work on his paper in its current program, save changes, etc., so he doesn't have to deal with many of the ios apps that sometimes change format and fonts in translation from mac/pc to ipad. wherever he is because pretty much all campuses have wireless. (It works everywhere for him on his big campus except in one classroom.)
However, when I was checking for updates on it the other day, I found one that sounds better than Splashtop. It's now the top paid app in the business in the app store, reviews are great, and for anywhere access does not require a cellular ipad. It's called Jump Desktop and it works with macs and pcs with your ipad.
Hope this helps and enjoy college!

  • Using one iPad with multiple iTunes accounts

I am trying to understand the iTunes implementation on iPad..After synching my MBP on an iPad, all of my settings music, photos, mail are transferred to the iPad...my wife now wants to use the iPad as we are traveling...can my iPad's iTunes be signed off and her iTunes account be logged on thus she can access all her data stored on her iTunes account? I have spent a lot of time investigating this on the forum and I do not understand what can and not can be done...If this can not be done, then if any iBooks we want read (different books for me/wife) then needs to be purchased and read on the one iPad needs to be bought on only MY account which is synched to my MBP... ? It seems that you need one iPad for each user...(we each have our own MBP)?

The iPad is not set up to allow different users with different data.
All users have the same data.
iTunes account = iTunes store account to make purchases
iTunes library = everything in iTunes when she logs in with her computer login
wife now wants to use the iPad as we are traveling...can my iPad's iTunes be signed off and her iTunes account be logged on thus she can access all her data stored on her iTunes account?
If you mean she want to sync the ipad with her iTunes library, yes.
She will need to login to her computer account, connect the iPad, launch iTunes then sync it.
This will erase all your data on the iPad and sync all her data.
If you mean can she access iTunes store account, launch iTunes on the iPad, scroll to the bottom and tap Sign out iTunes then sign back in with her iTunes account.
This will not add anything of hers to the iPad but she can make purchases with her iTunes account.

  • How can I remove iCloud from my Mac Book and iPad and Mac Book Air and then just reload back on the MB Air and iPad only?

How can I remove iCloud from my Mac Book and iPad and Mac Book Air and then just reload back on the MB Air and iPad only, which have a different user with a separate Apple ID?

You have quite muddied up the waters, I'm afraid. Assuming you now have a single GUID partition formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled, you should try reinstalling Lion:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • How do I sync my iPad with a new iTunes library without erasing all the previously purchased apps & data on my iPad?

I'm sure this is a common issue, and I've google-searched for solutions but I cannot find a straight forward answer anywhere. I really hope an expert here can help me out.
I purchased an iPad last year and synced it with my iTunes library on my old PC laptop. Well, my PC laptop harddrive crashed last week and I cannot access anything on my laptop anymore. I did not make a back-up for my PC harddrive either. I know, next time I should make a back-up and I will. But that's irrelevant. The PC is gone now.
I replaced my PC this week with a brand new Mac Book Pro. Excited about my new purchase, I quickly hooked up my iPad with the hopes of easily transferring and accessing my iPages, iNumbers, and other productivity iPad apps seamlessly to my new beautiful Mac Book Pro. But now I've run into the nightmarish dilemma of not being able to sync my beloved Ipad with my new MAC without getting the warning that basically says "your iPad is already synced with another iTunes Library. You may only sync to one iTunes Library at a time. You will lose all your data if you sync to this new computer."
Can someone give me a straightfoward answer as to how I can sync my iPad with my new iTunes Library on my new Mac Book Pro without losing any of the apps that I previously purchased? I want to be able to access the apps I downloaded on my iPad on my Mac Book Pro.
    Thanks so much!!!!!!

While it isn't as easy to just use a Mac iDevice as media storage as Android and Windows, you can add documents and such like Word, PDF and others manually in iTunes to have them sync as well.
