  • Recommended Books to learn Labview?

I want to write a Labview program that controls an HP 4277A LCZ
meter over an HPIB from a PC. It is a simple program, and I'd like
to put off the NI Labview classes because I'm just too busy right
    now.
The program should be very simple. It will let the user enter a
voltage range, then tell the HP4277A to output each voltage
looping through the voltage range. At each voltage point it will
wait for things to settle, take capacitance and conductance
readings of the DUT, store these values in arrays. When the loop
is completed, it will graph the C vs V, Cond. vs. V, and so ther
result of some math on the C vs. V curve, and store the array data
    to a disk file.
Can anyone recommend books that would help me pick up Labvie
    w
programming? I have 5 yrs. VB experience.
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Question:
How well do these books apply to LabView 5.1? That is the version I have
.... I am an experienced programmer (C++, VB) but a LabView 'newbie', and
have a few 'version specific' books on my shelf that become obsolete as the
    next language revision comes out.
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Book a credit note related to service entry sheet

    Hi
There is a service entry sheet which has been invoiced and payed. The service was a business trip. The vendor discovered that a discount has not not been charged and sent a credit note to the customer. In the transacion ME2S it is seen that a credit has not occured. In the transaction ME2L, the credited amount is still there to invoice.
How can a credit be booked related to a service entry sheet? It may also be possible to credit only a position on a service entry sheet.
    Thanks in advance
    Esra

    Hi,
ME2S, which is PO reporting with services. There is a column in this
report that is supposed to show the invoiced quantities and amounts. The
problem is when you post a subsequent debit against an invoice, only
zero values appear. However, when invoices and subsequent debits are
cancelled and reposted the correct value are displayed
In the case of 'GR-based IR' (EKPO-WEBRE) and not 'SRV-based IR' (EKPO-LEBRE)
there is no quantity calculation as quantity is always 1 in invoices.
That is why system displays zero quantity and as the consequence also
zero amount for invoices in ME2S.
There was only the pilote note  550434 created to change this behaviour, it was available for release 45B only.

  • Opinions on Labview books....

I'm a newbie at Labview and I'm looking at purchasing a couple of books:
Learning with LabVIEW 6i, 2nd Edition, Robert H. Bishop
    OR
LabVIEW Advanced Programming Techniques by Rick Bitter
Does anyone have any comments on either of these?
I am looking for a good beginners reference and also a more advanced book
which covers initial design techniques and how to structure larger
    applications.

I used the 1st edition to learn LabVIEW. If you can get the version with the
Student Edition of LabVIEW you can teach yourself LabVIEW very easily. Highly
    recommended particularly for learning.
I also like "Advanced LabVIEW labs" by John Esseck. This covers an awful lot
of the minutiae that is left undiscussed in Bishop's book.
    >OR

This isn't so much a how to book, but a how would it be done. I probably
would advise against it. You certainly aren't going to learn to program in
    LabVIEW from this book.

As Joe suggests, Gary Johnson's books are generally good. I like "LabVIEW
Graphical Programming, Practical Applications in Instrumentation and Control"
is good, but I like Power Programming even better. Lot's of HIGH POWER
applications and examples. Mr. Johnson's books are definitely not tutorials
however. Once you have your basic skill set down his books are very good at
taking you to the next step.
Don't overlook NI's LabVIEW manuals available at
    ftp.ni.com/support/labview/manuals
You will probably wear out your printer, but the users manual (P/N 320999C-01)
and the measurements manual (P/N 322661A-01) are really good places to start.

  • Book recommendation - user interface hardware

    Hi all,
Could you please recommend me a book related to user interface design and hardware related knowlege? That will also be helpful.
    Thanks
Need recommendation for hardware and software
    Hi all,
I am doing a project related to current control.
The purpose is to keep the current at constant. So I measure the current and get the value; and send a analog signal to tell our machine to discharge or to charge in order to keep the current at constant. I need to write the program to give analog signal to machine based on the current input.
Also, the machine can communicate with user. User can monitor the machine operation statuse and current level, etc.
I want to use LabView to program, since it doesn't cost a lot of time. I saw there is LabView RT LabView FPGA, etc. I am confused whether all of these are just diffrent function for LabView or different software. Which one I should use?
For hardware, I have no idea what is compactible with LabVeiw. What I should use?
I am totally new to this. I'll appreciate a lot if anyone can give suggestions.
    Thanks

    Hi,
In terms of books specific to GUI design there was one written by David Ritter, LabVIEW GUI - Essential Techniques but I'm pretty sure it's out of print. A very good book to get started with LabVIEW is 'LabVIEW for Everyone', by Jeffrey Travis and Jim Kring. This is the one that I picked up when I was plunged into the deep end and had to start building applications in LabVIEW. I still use it now because it covers a bit of everything and is usually enough to point me in the correct direction even if it doesn't have all the answers.
In terms of your other questions, LabVIEW RT is a real-time version of LabVIEW normally used for things like CompactRIO or PXI chassis hardware. The FPGA add on is for programming FPGA's such as the backplane in the CompactRIO device. The big advantage of both of these is that they avoid the need to use WIndows, MacOS or Linux which when dealing with critical rig control or aquisition can be a big plus. The bad side is that the hardware is more expensive and there's an additional software cost. For a simple application such as yours these would be serious overkill unless they're highly critical.
For the applications I run I use the LabVIEW Developer suite coupled with National Instruments hardware and compile executables that run under Windows. This does mean that I have to add in code to cope with situations when Windows decides to crash, or do something odd, but reduces the cost significantly. In your case it appears you have a single station controlling a simple process so the world is your oyster. The lowest cost option would be LabVIEW basic version running on a PC using a USB DAQ - cheapest that can output analogue signals is a USB-6008 but these are quite limited in their capabilities. I tried to use the slightly higher spec version (USB-6009) to run a lashed up test rig for a short period and had lots of problems because I was using the digital ins, outs, counter, analogue ins and outs all at the same time - it appears you can use any one quite happily up tot he stated performance but it complains when you try to use all together.
If your budget permits then the USB-6211 is a better choice in my opinion. You can look up the specs and prices for your location at www.ni.com
If you're a student then you can get LabVIEW at a very much reduced cost.
    Hope this helps.
    Paul

  • Run-time engine problem in Labview 2009 and Labview 2010

I have a problem with Labview 2009 and Labview 2010. I updated my Labview 2009 into 2010. But it turned out to be a trial one, because i did not have the serial number. So I uninstalled the Labview 2010. however, the funny stuff came over. I cannot use my Labview 2009. So i uninstalled Labview 2009 again. But eventually, I could not reinstall Labview 2009. Every time i had a runtime error and i could not proceed with the installation. in addition, any installation  related to Labview is not permitted and the same error came up every time. it is very annoying.
    So, What is the deal?
I attached the error here. Any comments or advice are welcomed and appreciated.

By chance is this machine's language set to any non-English locale?  You would check the locale setting by:
    Opening Control Panel.
    Opening "Regional and Language Options".
Looking Under "Regional Options" >> "Standards and Formats"
If it is set to something besides English, trying setting it to English and please report back what locale it was set to (or if this even solves the problem).

  • LabVIEW Run Time Engine and ActiveX Automation Server

    Hi,
I have a question related to LabVIEW Run Time Engine and ActiveX Automation Server:
We have a tool developed in LabVIEW and TestStand. End user interface is a LabVIEW GUI (it's an executable) which executes TestStand sequences. Some TestStand sequences call lower level LabVIEW VIs.
Everything works fine with LabVIEW installed, but I was wondering if I could run this tool on deployment machine with only LabVIEW run time engine installed. We are using LabVIEW 6.1 and with only the run time engine installed, I get the error message: "Unable to launch the 'LabVIEW.Application' ActiveX automation server ".
BTW, we are planning to upgrade the versions soon.
Is it possible to make things work only with the run time engine?
    Thank you.

    Thanks for the response, Brian.
I did upgrade to LabVIEW 8.0 and TestStand 3.5. Everything works fine on the development computer where LabVIEW and TestStand is installed. On the target computer in the lab, I installed LV RTE 8.0 and TestStand 3.5, and now when a VI is called in a sequence file, I get the following:
    RunState.PreviousStep.Result.Error.Code  -18002
RunState.PreviousStep.Result.Error.Msg  "LabVIEW: The VI is not executable"
So, the executable opens and works fine (which means that the LV RTE is installed properly), but when a sequence calls a low level VI, it does not make it through.
    comments/suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

  • Address book sync issues

    Hi,
I just added a new group within my MAC (10.4.10) Address Book (4.0.5)
and when trying to sync it with my iPhone (1.0.2) , iTunes (7.3.2) always
shows only the old groups - not the new one.
Here is what I did so far to try to make it work:
    - Reset Sync History in iSync
    - Deleted all the groups in Address Book and created new ones (different names)
    - Power-off iPhone and MAC and rebooted both
    - Plug-in iPhone, but iTunes still got the 'old' groups
Any idea how to fix this issue - meaning 're-initialize' iTunes on what to sync?
Rather than doing a factory reset of my iPhone just to see that iTunes still does
not check my Address book for changes etc. I thought I give this forum a try.
Not sure if I screwed anything up when I removed all the files in my ~/Library/
Application Support/SyncServices/Local/clientdata/... folders that contained a
clientname.txt file with "Markspace" in it to finally clean up my "Missing Sync"
    removal.
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Joerg

    OK,
just got back after talking to a 'guru' ay my local Apple store.
He also 'factory reset' my iPhone and it then perfectly synced with his
AddressBook, so we know the phone is fine - what a surprise
His assumption was that I have a corrupted AddressBook preference
file and recommended to erase it, reboot my system and everything
    should be OK.
Well, it isn't. I did what he told me and also used the DiskRepair Utility
to fix my disk permissions (that had 'ton's of errors with something
Address Book related issues, but still no solution. The thing just will
not sync. As soon as I plug in my iPhone, iTunes shows my old Contact
    groups that I removed yesterday.
Anybody any idea???? I am thinking about completely removing my
Address Book , but how do I re-install it from the original CD without
having to do a complete system re-install?
    Thanks for any help!

  • I can not get LabVIEW to respond to a VB6 ActiveX event

I am working with a VB6 ActiveX dll (VBtablet.dll is a wrapper for Wintab32 for a tablet interface) using LV8.2.1 and can not get it to respond to an event.  I have opend the object and registered it for callback, but have had no luck in having an event generated.  Is there anyway to see these events generated or at least that it has been registered?  The dll has no problem working in a VB app or in Excel using a VB macro.  Is there anything special that has to be in the ActiveX object to get LabVIEW to respond to it?
When I register the callback I use a control reference of the data being returned as my "user data" and in the callback VI I wire the event data into the "Value" of the control reference. I believe this is all I have to do.  Any ideas would be helpfull.
    Thanks,

I am able to see that events are generated from the dll, but somewhere between the ActiveX object and LabVIEW it is disconnected.  Is it possible that LabVIEW is excepting these events and not allowing then into the code.  The path as I see it is
    dll -> WinAPI -> ActiveX -> LabVIEW
One thing this dll requires is a windows handle and I am wondering if LabVIEW itself is reads the events directly instead of ignoring them.  The reason I bring it up is that the tablet works like a mouse and I am wondering if it is absorbing these commands directly and not allowing them to be passed through the ActiveX object. Like this
    dll-> WinAPI -> LabVIEW
therefore the event is never generated.  That is why I wish I could speak with someone at NI that could explain that process better, but it seems like there is no one at NI who knows any high level issues.
First this are not high level issues but lowest low level issues. Some of it certainly is more Windows related than LabVIEW so support from MS, as unlikely it is to get that, would be at its place. NI people are not there nor can't really help you debug your VB issues.
Second you say it is a tablet and works like a mouse, then I'm wondering if Windows is not simply claiming it as a Human Interface Device itself and not really letting you control it yourself in your VB control.

  • Labview freeze when accessing a custom menu with data on the clipboard

This one has got me stumped:  When selecting a custom menu item with data on the clipboard the GUI freezes.  Freezes are longer for more data and longer for older versions of Labview.  I wrote the test code, attached, but the example "Menu Selection Demo.vi" shows the same behavior.
Running Labview 2011 here are some freeze delays for my laptop (a bit slower machine) with various amounts of text data on the clipboard:
    Clipboard size        Delay
    1.3MB                   2.1 sec
    2.6MB                   4.9 sec
    3.8MB                   17.2 sec
    14MB                    253.3 sec
The delay appears to be non-linear.  A doubling of the clipboard data size more than doubles the delay and a tripling of the clipboard data size produces a delay of almost 10X!  Things are also much, much worse on my ancient version 8.2.1 (over a 40 second freeze for 1.3MB and it goes up from there).
Note that the freeze also occurs on programs with a custom menu when exiting.  This would seem to suggest it might have something to do with the timeout, but why timeout should vary with clipboard size and not with the value wired to it makes this feel even more like a bug in the custom menu functionality.
This seems to be related to known issues in Labview 2011 #39604 49UBP4LE (http://www.ni.com/white-paper/13168/en#39604_by_Date) that was first reported in version 8.2.1.  This known issue relates to Labview freezing when large amounts of data are copied from Labview to the clipboard.  No fix has been implemented since this was originally reported in 2007.
This freeze also occurs when shortcuts to menu items (such as Ctrl + L) are used when large amounts of data are on the clip board.
Thus far this has been 100% repeatable and I have not been able to find a way around it.  I also haven't found anything else similar on the forums or on the web.  It appears to be a GUI freeze with Labview still running in the background, which is also odd.
My work-arounds at this point are either to not use the clipboard (bad), programatically clear the clipboard several times each second (worse) or remove all custom menu functionality and replace those functions with onscreen controls.  So, for now, I'm removing custom menu items because my users need the clipboard and I can't have massive delays making my data acquisition code look crashed.
Any ideas would be helpful.  This one has me scratching my head...

Well, doing Microsoft Word, Excel and what else on a computer that is used to run an important production test, is a very bad idea. There is no way that you can guarantee, that one of these applications is not causing some interruption to the currently running time critical task. Word and Excel and just about any other computer application can crash, lock up the computer or eat your breakfast while you are doing seemingly harmless things.
The issue with the clipboard in LabVIEW is indeed a problem that exists for a long time and I hope they fix it sometime, but the fact remains, that you should NEVER use a computer for other tasks while you run a test or other manufacturing related application on it, when a failure of that application can cost you more than a few pennies.
