Books & Spoken Word and Audiobooks

I downloaded some books on CD I have to itunes. One I converted to a "true" audiobook using instructions suggested elsewhere in the forums (what a hassle! I will probably just leave them "Books & Spoken Word" in the future). Other books I imported and left "Books & Spoken Word". Problems I'm having:
1) The "true" audiobook appears and reappears in iTunes under Audiobooks. Even though I couldn't see it in iTunes at the time it did successfulyy sync to the iPod and I can listen to it just fine. I go back to iTunes it's there -- then it's not.
2) Some the books on CD I loaded show up fine in iTunes and iPod but one doesn't "Italian Immersion". I see it in Genre "Books & Spoken Word" in iTUnes but it is no where to be found on the iPod.
Thanks for any ability to demystify what's going on. It shouldn't be this inconsistent!

As you found out, in order to be in the audio book section of the iPod it needs to be a "true" audio book.
This is done by making it a .m4b file type. No other way.
Once you understand how to do it, it should be fairly simple.
Here's a link if you don't remember how or where you did it -> How do I get my audiobook to appear in the Audiobooks menu on my iPod?

  • Spoken word and Garage Band

I will begin work on a book soon which will require interviewing many people. Rather than taking notes I plan on recording on my Mac with a Snowball. Is Garage Band suited for spoken word or is there some other software better for this? What about software that will convert spoken word to text?
    Thanks for your input.

Is Garage Band suited for spoken word
At it's core, GB is a "Multi Track Recorder" What you record on those tracks is up to you, guitar, violin, or vox, GB will record it fine if you use a decent mic (the snowball is a good mic)
or is there some other software better for this?
If I were doing it, I'd probably use an Audio Editor, but that's personal preference

Forget about that as an option.

  • Spoken word on i-tunes

    Hi,
I'm sure there is an easy answer to my question, but it's one I'm struggling with. Every time I import a book (spoken word) on to my i-tunes, it ends up all mixed in with my music. I have just purchased 80 CD's of spoken word and I really do not want this to happen again. How can I ensure that it gets put somewhere else? I can't see a book category to import into. Thanks.

This forum is a largely volunteer outfit. Sometimes is can take a little while to get an answer. I actually read your post early this morning but was at work and didn't have the link I wanted to refer you to.
See if there's anything here that helps:

  • How do you move a spoken word book from Music to Books

At some time I managed to include some spoken word books into my Library under MUSIC.  For clarity, I want to move them to the BOOKS section of the Library. Drag and drop does not work and I have not found any other way to accomplish this. If you know how, please answer. Thanks.

Still require some help.    The reply I received did not help me. At least, I was not able to straighten out my iTunes Library to move some audio books out of music. (See answer and my reply to that)
Possibly this means that it is impossible to do the operation. If anyone has a different idea, I would appreciate your input.  Thank you.    6/11/2013

  • I would like to upload an audiobook from cd. iTunes uploads this as music even if I select "books & spoken". How to upload audiobooks?

I would like to upload an audiobook from cd. iTunes uploads this as music even if I select "books & spoken" as "CD info". How to upload audiobooks?

Thanks, but the given instructions (Audiobooks on iPods) do not apply to iPhone/iPad 7.0.2 on iTunes/Win 11.1.1.11. The software asks whether to import the CD, select the media type (and there is no "Audiobook" to select") - and starts importing. All the book appears among the music files.
-Or... once it has happened, is there a way to move it to audiobooks?
    OK

  • TS1424 I purchased and downloaded a book in iBooks.  I read about 16 chapters.  The next time I opened the app to read the book, no words loaded on the pages.  It would go to the table of contents, but not to pages in chapters.  Any ideas?

Try to reset your phone, hold the home/sleep buttons until it reboots and the apple logo appears, don't release the buttons till apple logo appears.  If no luck there, Resync the book.  Or delete it and redownload it.  Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • HT5071 It is possible for me to distribute my book as a PDF/word and on the Ibooks app?

    Hello,
So I am currently writing a book, and I am curious to know if it is possible to distribute my book as a PDF/word and on the Ibooks app store. I intend on making the book a free download.

It's your content - you can distribute as you like, but as noted, only via the store when in .ibooks format. As a PDF, you can do whatever you want with it.

  • Mac book pro running slow and word and excel from Mac not opening

Mac book pro running slow and word and excel from Mac not opening

Call it Monday morning humor.... ALL the MacBook Pro owners we see asking the same thing (more than once a day, too) are slower since 10.10.x so we can assume something. Heard the very same story with every new OS in the past decade from laptop owners, heard a lot especially with Snow Leopard back in Aug-Sept 2009.
A new OS goes better if you do a clean install / checked Roaringapps.com for compatibility / wait for vendors to have updates
About the only things that can be done in addition - if you have like many posting those symptoms have minimal 4GB RAM is to upgrade to 8GB+ and throw in a new 250GB+ SSD (the most recent MBP have to be bought with and cannot add RAM later).
Even the MacBook Air 2014 though with 4GB RAM have PCIe-SSDs that helps, plus 4th gen Intel i5's and an IG of 5000 or later all help.
Try including more details. Model year and configuration at least.

Does the same file play normally in iTunes?  Do other audiobooks play normally on the iPod?
How does "borrowing" work?  Does it require use of another app, other than iTunes, to get it on the iPod?

  • T and S and D sounds too loud w/ spoken word recordings

I am doing spoken word recordings, and my t, s, and d, and sometimes f sounds are too long and loud. I have the following settings:
    -visual eq: reduce s
    -speech enhancer: male narrarot
    -compressor: vocal compression basic
Could someone suggest any other setting(s) that might help me reduce these long sounds, which are usually at the ends of my words.

As the previous poster mentioned, this is a sibilance issue. It's actually caused by the compressor. The hard consonants you mentioned peak very quickly, too fast for the compressor to compress them. But the rest of the audio that follows is compressed. So you basically have the consonant at the original volume level, but the rest of the word is being reduced in volume by the compressor.
One thing you can try doing is going into the settings for your compressor and moving the 'attack' slider all the way to the left. This may not fix the problem, but it's something to try. You can also try using the "Remove S" preset on the Visual EQ for that track.

  • Mixing music and spoken word

Is there a way to have both music and spoken word on the Ipod and suffle my playlist without have the spoken word files playing?
I know I can Manually Mange my Ipod on Itunes and not load the spoken word files, but that is not what I want to do. I want to have both available but not have spoken word files come up when I want to suffle my playlist.

Can you make 2 different playlists in iTunes, one for music, and one for spoken word, then upload both playlists to your iPod and go to the music playlist only? You'd then just have to tell your iPod to shuffle and only your music would be played.

  • If I import audio books into the music section of itunes it lists the books as albums and all the chapters as tracks fine when I sync them to my ipod classic, but not if I import them as audiobooks, any ideas please?

If I import audio books into the music section of itunes it lists the books as albums and all the chapters as tracks fine when I sync them to my ipod classic, but not if I import them as audiobooks and then sync them, any ideas please?

If you import the audiobook as an audiobook to your iTunes Library, it will be listed in the Books section of your Library. You may need to turn on Books in order to see them. If you cannot see the File/Edit... etc. menu, use CTRL B on your keyboard to make that menu bar appear. Then go to Edit/Preferences>Books and put a tick in the box.
But, if the imported audiobook shows up in the Music section of your iTunes Library, highglight the files (in iTunes) and select File/Get Info/Options/Media Kind>Audiobook. These files will now transfer to the Books section of iTunes.
Once on an iPod Classic, look under the Audiobooks menu. Again, you may need to change the settings in the Settings menus, in order to have the Audiobooks option shown on the Main Menu and/or the Music Menu.

  • How do I shorten one region and take up slack keeping later regions intact and in synch in short story spoken word reading

I import one track which is one region and it is a little more than one hour long. It is the import from the master, It is a spoken word short story and the reader makes a a few flubs/miscues in reading. He repeats to redo text where he makes reading mistakes. So, I have a story in one track-spoken word. Now, I edit out mistakes and finish the first draft.
There are now 100 regions in the track. I go back to fine tune the edit and recheck for reading mistakes and editing mistakes. In region 10 I realize I must cut a portion out because of an extraneous word mishap. This spilt makes region 10 shorter. Now I must move ALL regions, 11-100, up to take up the unwanted gap. How do I get all, 11-100 regions to move up and keep the story intact, in synch?
Then, in region 20 I realize I must lengthen it, part of a sentence is cut off. I re-import the original to a new track and find the sentence I need and spilt the track so I can replace the faulty region 20 with the new and longer region 20. Now, region 21-100 need to move downstream to make room for the longer replacement region.
How do I get 21-100 to move as one unit, downstream so I can add 20 and keep everything in sync?
I do not think, or at least hope, I have to select each 21-100 regions individually.

the most obvious way is to zoom out and drag select them all.
a less obvious way would be select all the regions (click in the track header) and choose the Join menuItem to create one large region out of all the peices, then you're moving only a sngle region after your edit point

you created extra work for yourself, edits are non-destructive:

(Let the page FULLY load. The link to your answer is at the top of your screen)
just grab the bottom right corner of the region and drag to the right to bring back the missing section

You get one and only one download of audiobooks.  As always it is your responsibility to back up your content.
