Boolean logic for Smart Mailboxes?

So all my incoming email goes thru a mail filter and I maintain a separate mailbox as a logfile. This is so that I can view the log online via a web client. The log is basically a mail box whereby I trip off the body of the message and annotate how the message was handled. Now this becomes an issue when I want to create a smart mailbox where I have multiple addresses to the same mailbox but I don't want to see the log messages. So I make use of message no in mailbox a lot whenever I'm using smart mailboxes but Mail.app doesn't let you define ((this address or that address) and (message not in mailbox))

  • How to use Flagged mailbox in rules for smart mailbox?

Since I installted ML I have a new mailbox called Flagged. In Lion I had a smart mailbox called Flagged which did the same.
I used this smart mailbox in Lion in rules of other smart mailboxes. The new mailbox Flagged in ML however can't be selected in a rule for a smart mailbox. It is in fact the only one I can't select.
Am I the only one facing this problem? If so, is there a solution for it?

The only use I've found so far for the Flagged messages is to be able to set different colours for different things and then use the preset mailbox to isolate and concentrate on them:
And, as I'm using iCloud, I also get to see them on my laptop.

  • Compound criteria for smart mailboxes?

I would like to create a smart mailbox with compound rules such as:
(To contains "x"  AND Subject contains "y") OR (From contains "z")
Is this possible?  If so, how is it done?  Is there a manual or web page that explains how to do this?
Sorry for the elementary question, but I'm new to Mac Mail.
P.S.  Another way I could handle the same need (for me) would be to have mail rules that apply to outgoing e-mails, not just received e-mails.  My understanding from other posts I've seen is that this did not exist in the past.  Has that been changed?

  • What is Behavior for Smart Mailbox message retention/deletion?

When (how long) do Smart Mailboxes delete their mail? Mine seem to last only a day or a week. It's impossible to tell. I don't see anywhere that I can set the preference.
    Thanks

Smart Mailboxes don't do anything to messages except list them. The messages must reside somewhere else. If the message is deleted from wherever it lives, or if it no longer satisfies the search criteria that define the Smart Mailbox, it will no longer appear. For example, suppose the Smart Mailbox specifies "unread" messages. Once the message has been read, it will not appear in that Smart Mailbox the next time it is opened.

  • Unread messages count is wont for Smart Mailbox

Has anyone else noticed that a smart mailbox has a non-zero unread message count but as soon as it is clicked on the count is reset to zero? Zero is correct because all of the messages have been read. I've tried rebuilding the inbox but it hasn't helped. I also recreated the smart mailbox but that didn't help either. Sounds like a bug to me but I wonder if others have experienced it. I am using Mail Tags so that is a possible complication.

Same problem here with Yahoo mail.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  I have looked at Yahoo mail from all folders in my phone (running 7.0.3 now), as well as in a browser, looked at Inbox (empty), all Trash, Sent, etc. folders and they're completely empty on Yahoo servers.
I thought that 7.0.3 had initially cleared up this issue but it has reappeared, and I don't know how to fix it.

  • ICloud Mail replacement for smart mailboxes?

Anyone guide me here on how to have the Mail that is forwarded from my work show in separate organization like I could do in Smart Mail Boxes.  Folders/New Folder and mail rule did not work correctly for me in iCloud mail.  Or is Apple not there yet with something new losing something old?  OS7.2 and iOS5.
    thanks

aside from the rules settings there is nothing to manage. Only "archieve", but that's more of a "to keep" folder .

  • Is it possible for smart mailboxes on iPhone and iPad in iOS5

    Hello,
I've tried googling this to find an answer but had no definitive luck.
Is it possible on iOS 5 to setup mailbox rules (like in mail on my mac), or any other way to send messages from sepcific senders, or with specific subjects etc to a separate inbox (folder).
I'm using my .mac and .me accounts. on iCloud
    Thanks

    I don't believe so.

  • Why are complex Smart Mailbox rules not available?

I wonder if this is a technical limitation in OSX Mail, or simply that Apple can't find a good way to present the UI.
Here are some rules I can create in OSX Mail for filtering or for smart mailboxes:
ALL rule: Find mails which are **in the last 31 days** AND **from [email protected]**
ANY rule: Find mails in the last month **from [email protected]** OR **from [email protected]**
Here's the rule I'd like to create, but can't:
COMPLEX rule: Find mails which are **in the last 31 days** AND ( **from [email protected]** OR **from [email protected]** )
The third rule there combines both ALL and ANY rules. I have yet to see a mail application which supports this form of query in smart mailboxes, yet it seems like a perfectly normal use case (eg, find emails from team members A, B, or C, and which also have quality X).
Smart mailboxes would be much more helpful if they were that little bit smarter.

if you are not into editing smart mailbox plists by hand you can esily accomplish this by creating multiple smart mailboxes and combining them into further smart mailboxes. say, make smart mailboxes 1 and 2 using a bunch of AND conditions and a smart mailbox 3 with the condition that a message is in smart mailbox 1 OR in smart mailbox 2. that said, it's really not clear why this has not been implemented into GUI directly. it's been like this for a very long time. that mac os x hint you found is 4 years old.

  • Restore Smart Mailbox Settings from Time Machine...

Where are the settings for Smart Mailboxes stored?  I had to reinstall my OS from scratch and now my Smart Mailboxes are gone.  When I go into Time Machine with Mail open and go bak prior to the re-install I see the Smart Mailboxes so I know they are there somewhere.   What settings files do I need to restore from the finder?

I copied the time machine back up from a day ago ... I first had to reboot to remove a lock file and then used termnal to copy the file over the original with sudo cp  command. .. The VPN is part of the System keychain ... I have looked in the System/Library area but have not found anything that looks like the file I want .. thanks for  the help.  any ideas where the system keychain is kept?

  • Automatically delete Smart Mailbox contents?

Does anyone know of an easy way to automatically delete all messages within a specific Smart Mailbox when Mail is opened? I found an Automator action for selecting Smart Folder contents in the Finder, but nothing for Smart Mailboxes.
    Thanks,
    Sky

    Hi Dan,
Thanks for the speedy reply. I do understand the difference between smart mailboxes and real folders, and I suppose either could work for my application. What I'm looking for is an add-on like Johan Carlsson's Get Smart Folder Contents Automator add-on (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/getsmartfoldercontents.html) that works instead with Smart Mailboxes.
Setting up a rule in Mail.app will not work for me as I'm using SpamSieve and have the Junk filters disabled, so again it would have to be an Automator add-on that processes local mail folders.
    Regards,
    Sky

  • Nest Smart Mailboxes?

I would like to create a smart mailbox with a number of smart mailboxes nested within it. The Mail help menu suggests this can be done, however, it escapes me. The exact words from the Mail help menu under the organize smart mailboxes topic are:
"As with regular mailboxes, you can 'nest' Smart Mailbox folders by creating new Smart Mailbox folders within existing Smart Mailbox folders."
I cannot drag them onto other smart mailboxes, and cannot find any options when creating a new smart mailbox to do this. Am I missing something?

When you create a new smart mailbox you must have the one it will nest in selected. This is the usual procedure for nesting mailboxes. I haven't carried this right through to test whether it works for smart mailboxes but it does for ordinary mailboxes.

  • Smart mailbox for mails which are not in another smart mailbox

    Hello!
I tried to create a smart mailbox for all the mails which doesn't appear in any other smart mailbox.
I know that I can tell my smart mailbox not to look for mails who are in the inbox or the other default-boxes of the mail program.
But how can I choose a smart Mailbox instead???

Thanks, John, but the original idea isn't mine. Someone else realized that some time ago:

  • Smart mailbox for Unread messages doesn't update automatically.

    Hello everyone.
I've set up a smart mailbox in Mail to show only my unread messages.  But, it doesn't update automatically in that when I read a message, that message remains visible in the list until I leave and then return to the "Unread Messages" smart mailbox.
Any thoughts as to how I can get it to update automatically?
    Thanks very much.....

Thanks for the note, Jeffrey and trust me when I say I'm a die-hard Apple believer.  But, at work I support Windows machines and Outlook has views to show only unread messages.  As soon as a messages is read and we move on to the next messages, the read message drops out of the list.  This is what I'm look for so that I can apply it to the few Macs I also support at work.
What Apple's Mail gives us is good, but what we were hoping was to have the smart mailbox work the same way that Outlook's feature does.  However, I still much prefer working with Mail rather than with Outlook.  So, we will adjust.
    Thanks again.

  • Mac Mini: Smart mailbox items disappear after a month in one mailbox but stay for years in others.  All settings are the same!

I have several Smart mailboxes set up on my Mac.
Some of them hold all mail for years and others delete after about a month.
All settings are the same on all mailboxes.

    BDAqua Hi,
I have only 1 E-mail account, It is a POP and the one earlier account that I set up that works fine and saves all E-mails comes form a friend who also runs Apple.  Don't know if that has anything to do with it.
All others are running Bill Gates stuff.
Even when I delete the "Friend Apple" E-mails his messages stay in the smart mailbox.
I deleted the other E-mails as I usually claen out once a week and get rid of junk and adds.  I deleted the other smart mailbox E-mails from my main mailbox figuring that they would stay in the smart box like the other one.
    Still perplexed,
Thanks for the help so far,

  • Smart mailbox for addresses NOT in my address book?

I want a smart mailbox that only contains emails from addresses that aren't in my address book. It doesn't seem possible with the options in the dialog box, unless I'm missing something really obvious.

I just discovered I can do this through the Junk section of Preferences. Click "Advanced" and you can create a filter specifically for 'Sender not in my address book'.
