Maybe this page can help you construct complex searches in Mail:
I noticed this line in the page:
+Note: When searching Mac Mail does not use some frequently used wildcard searches. Use of the asterisk * or the syntax teresa@somewhere returns no matches.+

  • Advanced Search in Apple Mail with Logical Expressions (Attibutes)

We need to be able to search in Apple Mail, currently version 3.6 (936), with advanced expressions such as the junk mail flag.
We want to search only within mail flagged as junk with a specific domain, such as a domain.com. Users are not using Junk Mail moving to junk folders yet. All junk is in the inbox until they train the rules.
Logically speaking this would look something like, FLAG:JUNK FROM:Yahoo.com. I have been unable to find the attribute for flag. It would also be helpful if there was a listing of all attributes that can be searched within mail. This type of list is available through various sources for Spotlight.
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Many thanks for the kind reply. I finally installed Thunderbird and so far everything is good.  Time Machine  would, were I using the laptop in a more traditional setting, help resolve this issue. However I am prepping for a year + back pack trip to South America and elsewhere and the MacBook Pro is going along.  What I have done is install Time Machine Editor (since Time Machine is parsimonious about daily updates) and update now once a week. Better than nothing and given what my schedule on the road may be like its a better fit than once a day. One would think Apple would make Time Machine  more controllable particularly in the versions of OSX that are installed in laptops.....
In any case this is my first MacBook Pro and my first Apple computer but I am a long time Linux/Unix user so feel right at home with OSX. In spite of the mail problem, this is without a doubt  the best laptop I ve ever used....and I ve been using them since they were suitcases
Regards and many thanks for the kind read and reply.

You can't, it does not exist in Mac Mail.

  • Apple mail - help flagged items

I deleted flagged items before removing the flag. They are gone but the number of flagged items remains even though there are none! help please.

Let me paste in the instructions I give for removing the com.apple.mail.plist, and check to see if this is what you did? Also, do you have any email info set up in Internet Explorer preferences (even if not using IE)?
There are some other things to try, but I want to know that you followed the right procedure on the plist.
Also, did you mailboxes originate in Panther or earlier, and then converted when upgrading to Tiger?
    Paste:
Quit Mail, and in the Finder open Home/Library and locate the Mail folder. Control-click over the Mail folder, and choose Duplicate -- then drag the resulting copy to the Desktop for temporary backup. Next, open Home/Library/Preferences and find the com.apple.mail.plist file and drag it to the desktop.
Relaunch Mail, which will open as though new, and when prompted to import anything DECLINE. Instead, re-enter your account info, and Mail will re-discover the account for this account, and all should be well.
Ask any needed questions, and keep us posted.

  • Apple Mail Help Please

Hello all. I also am having a mail issue. It was working fine last night and when I woke up this morning, it stopped working. I am running mail 2.0.5 on 10.4.5. I am running Tiger through the original disks and have roughly 28GB of storage left from my 160gb hdd. When I try to open up mail, I get a constant pinwheel and it does not time out. I have tried to remove the plist and launch it and I have also tried shift clicking on mail like previous discussions suggested. I hope this explanation is detailed enough. I am new to the Mac world and don't entirely know how to explain myself any better. Any help would be much appreciative. Thanks.

  • New SSL email settings for Apple Mail help please

I too received the Verizon email settings notification but when I turn on ssl and change the server ports for incoming and outgoing mail to the correct ports...I get a connection error... the mail server "incoming.verizon.net" is not responding. When I change back to the original settings, it connects just fine. Anybody else having issues with Apple Mail on a mobile device I.e. iPad, iPhone?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I had the same problem setting up the new ports and SSL on an ipad. Restarting the ipad did not help. Turns out that the settings app needs to be turned off before incoming will work. For those that aren't familiar, double click the home button. All active apps will appear in a row across the bottom of the display. Press and hold any active app icon until they all start dancing and have a small red circle in the upper left corner with a minus sign in it. Release and then tap the app(s) you want to close.

  • Can't do search in Apple Mail

I have installed the update to fix Mail problems in Mavericks but still cannot do a search in Mail so cannot easily find specific messages.

What finally worked was to not use iCloud at all.
I've had 3 mailboxes, all gmail and none of them worked with the searchfield in Apple Mail, only in Spotlight. All fixes have been tried, envelope index reset, spotlight and all. No luck.
Only a complete zero-erase of the drive and a clean install of Mavericks made the search work and when I activated iCloud only that icloud mailbox was being searched nothing else.
So I did another zero-erase and clean install and setup the 3 google accounts directly. Never did I activate iCloud or made any part of it active. Search kept on working, after all updates, Office 2011 install and updates. Everything works fine, just not with iCloud.
This iCloud account does contain signatures which install themselves when you enable iCloud, so my guess is that those signatures or settings for Apple Mail cause some sort of malfunction and will prohibit Apple Mail from showing any other results than iCloud from that moment on.
Of course iCloud is pretty great, but in this case it does something with Apple Mail and limits searchresults...

  • Attachements not included in search within Apple Mail

    Hi
I have a problem with the search within Mail: my attachments seem not to be included within searches. When I search for terms within an attachment, I get no results. I tried with PDFs, DOCs, RTFs and ZIPped documents.
By the way: if there happens to be some expert out there: what kinds of attachments are searched within mail (e.g. a DOC in a ZIP archive)?
My system is quite new and setup still standard (at least the spotlight preferences).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Phil

    Hi,
It is caused by the deprecated features and components in Outlook 2013:
Outlook search via the Windows Shell
Outlook 2013 will no longer surface search results for mail and calendar items in Windows Explorer (or via the start menu).  Users can still utilize all of Outlook's search functionality from within the app itself.

  • Trying to get different column headings for folders in Apple Mail - Help!

    Hi there
I really hope someone can help here.
I have a few different email accounts coming into my Apple Mail program. For each account I am using a 'Saved' folder (for the incoming email i have read) and a 'Sent' folder (for the emails I have sent).
In my 'Saved' folder, I want my column headings to be:
    a. Who the email is from
    b. The subject line
    c. The date and time received
In my 'Sent' folder, I want my column headings to be:
    a. The address I have sent to
    b. The subject line
    c. The date and time received
The problem is that when I changed the column headings for one folder, it changes them for all of them. So I can display who my incoming emails are from, but in the sent folder, it only tells me who my sent emails are from....me!! This is no use at all. Is there anyway to apply different column headings to different folders? In Entourage this is easy, but Im at a loss of what to do in mail.
    Please help if you can
    Many thanks
    Dan

as i said, Sent mailbox is special and can have custom columns separate from other mailboxes. ALL other mailboxes have the same columns and you can only customize them simultaneously. if you want to change that leave Apple feedback on the issue

  • Apple Mail Saviour Needed!

    Hi there,
So, while moving to a new mail server, I accidentally deleted my mailbox/account in Mail. It was a POP account.
Making a new account and connecting it to the server, restored all my messages in the inbox, but not the "sent" messages. I think there might have been an option to not store these on the mail server, but only locally on my Mac.
This archive of sent messages is vital to me, so I hope someone here can help me find and restore them.
I've already looked in my "Library/Mail folder and can see a "tree" of folders associated with my new account and a general one for "Mailboxes".
There's nothing for my old account.
As I navigate into the "Mailboxes" folder and look in the "Outbox.mbox, there're lots of folders, but when I eventually navigate to the end, the "Messages" folder, there are no files there. Usually there would be files with an .emlx extension.
Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mads

    OS X 10.7.5
    2 x 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

Hello! Looking in your ~/library/mail folder was a good step in the right direction.
    Two things you can try:
1/ Copy that outbox.mbox to your Desktop. Then bring the Mail-application to the foreground, find the "File"-menu in the upper left corner of your computer display (somewhere to the right of the classic Apple-menu) and click import.
In the window that appears, choose "import from Apple Mail" (don't choose import from mbox) and see if you can import your outbox.mbox on your desktop this way.
You can find the imported mailbox to the left in your Mail application, it will be called "Imported"
If this didn't work you can try the same thing but now with choose import from mbox
2/ If above didn't work the outbox.mbox is not containing the messages you want. Do you use Time Machine? If so: while the Mail app is in the foreground, and while your back-up disk is connected, click on the magnifying glass in the upper right corner of your computer display. Spotlight will appear. Type the word: time into Spotlight. Time Machine should be a top result. Click on Time Machine.
Now Time Machine will open in the shape of your Mail application in a kind of Star Trek environment. Use the timeline on the right to find a day when your outbox was still working and click on it. You will "travel back into time" and your lost messages should reappear after a minute. Select them all using [cmd]+[a] and click the restore button down below.
These are the easiest two ways to restore emails. I hope they solve your issue.

  • IPad streaming to apple tv help needed!

Trying to get wnba live access from my iPad to apple tv. I have audio but no visual...help!

Assuming you have a TV with an open port (be it composite, component or HDMI), you might consider buying the right output connection from the Apple Store.  Each flavor costs $39.  I have the HDMI option, but haven't tried it yet.  All three "flavors" mirror what you see on the iPad on to your TV.  With all three methods, since they are hard wired, you will need your iPad close to the TV.
The first link below is an Apple promo on iPod mirroring.  The second link it to the HDMI option.  You can find the composite or component options on the Apple Store website as well.

  • URGENT MAIL HELP NEEDED!

Leopard has seriously screwed with Mail.
Somehow while trying to make my .mac emails only appear in Mail and not on the server my .mac account has become Read Only. I can't move mails, delete mails, mark them as read. I can send and receive but nothing else. Mail worked exactly as I wanted it for many years and now it's completely shot.
    So, 2 things to resolve....
Firstly, I need to make my .mac account not read only. The error box says the following but I can't find what it's on about
The account path /Users/Ant/Library/Mail/Mac-ant.carr is not writable. Please change the Account Directory field in the Account Options tab to a writable directory
Secondly, I just want my sent emails to live in the sent email box and not on the server!
    Hope someone can help!

    If this helps anyone.
I installed Thunderbird and my .mac account works fine.
    So,
I backed up and copied my pref file. App Zapped Mail and re-installed it. Without putting my pref file back in, the .mac account was still read only.
    Anyone...?

  • Mail Help Needed

Hi. I just installed Lion on an external drive and I'm playing around with it.
My favorite feature of Lion is the revamped Mail. However, I'm also confused about how to do searches.
Once I enter some words in the search bar, how do I then filter that search by Subject, To, From etc? It was easy to do in the previous version of Mail. I can't figure out how to do it in the new version.
    So, any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

click in the search box and type,  select the input from the dropdown menu. Type again behind this token to start a new search token.
    Make sense?
One limitation is the search box area does not expand to show all tokens if you exceed the space.

  • So close...Mail help needed!

I desperately need to import mail from PC Outlook 2003 to mac mail 2.11.
I used Mozilla Thunderbird on the PC and imported all email into it fine. I then copy the folder on my mac and import using mail/import. All the folders show show up and every one contains exactly one (1) email. Some of these folders have anywhere from half a dozen to 500 emails in them and the size of the file reflects it, but only 1 email shows up in each folder. Any ideas?

Worked perfectly. My guess is that I needed to rebuild each mailbox seperately. Instead I was clicking on the 'import' folder and assuming it would rebuild each individual sub-mailbox, but that isn't the case.
Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Sending mail help needed

Howdy, just got the iPad, and cannot send emails to myself (my home computer) on wifi, also, will need to do this on any wifi network, any suggestions/help? thanks

Hello, and thanks, what I did when I got the iPad was to sync, and during syncing it asked me if I wanted to use a previous iPad account, apparently it was confusing an iPhone account with the iPad insofar as I had inadvertently downloaded an iPad app by mistake a month ago. I let it use that account, and made some changes on the fly regarding various setlists, apps, podcasts that I wanted on the iPad. It also downloaded all the files to the various apps associated with that account, which is great, I didn't need to reload all of the files with notes, splashID, etc. When done, I was receiving mail fine over my wifi, but I cannot send any email over the wifi (which is all I have right now, no 3G...) Following some of the suggestions in this discussion forum, I deleted the email account and then re-entered the info, once that was completed (correctly), I was able to receive emails ONLY if all of my Mail accounts on my devices is closed, ie., the Mail program on my mac, and the iPhone turned off. But I can still not send my emails, also, after deleting the account and then reentering the mail account info, I cannot receive emails unless my Mail account is closed on the mac and my iPhone off, hope that helps!
