Boost Mac Mini Network Speeds?

Hello,
I'm using my Mac Mini as a hub for an entertainment system. It's located on the third floor of my home, and I have an Aiport Extreme on the second floor. The Mac Mini was purchased new in Fall 2010.
Lately, streaming speeds have degraded for some reason. With Hulu (for example), it takes a painfully long time to load a page, and there are constant pauses.
I'm not sure if this is because of a recent software update or what. But I need to figure this out, as the entertainment system has become essentially useless.
Can someone please suggest a way to boost the speed/WiFi reception of my Mac Mini?
Thanks,
Matt

As your mini is the latest generation, the wifi antenna is basically on the bottom of the unit. If that has too much between it and your router's antennas, your signal will be weak. If the furniture it sits on is metal, or simply too dense, it doesn't help. Also an issue is if you've got other electronic components below it. As convenient as wifi is, I am still a firm believer in using a wired connection for such work - its simply more stable and reliable.

  • Mac mini ethernet speeds cut in half by snow leopard?

I upgraded an old mac mini (2,1) of mine from Leopard to Snow leopard this weekend.  Same physical hardware and setup results in a dslreports.com speed test of the ethernet at about 50% of that of the leopard speeds (about 11.5Mbps over ether).  I have another slightly newer C2D mini on SL that is doing 10Mbps on the same network.  When I change startup disks to the SL disk, I end up with a max of about 4.5-5.5Mbps.  Any ideas?  I ran "Tune for High speed" on MLCC to open up the MTU size and such on both machines.  Same results.  I didn't try to update the existing partition (working Leopard) to SL, I scratch installed it on a new partiition.
Any ideas on what I should tweak to get the SL side to get to the same performance?  I can always upgrade (painfully) the Leopard side and test it and then revert if it has the same poor results)...
    Thanks,
    Jim

Sorry, I checked all the obvious.  The ifconfig shows both ETH0 running with the same parameters.
Wifi is off on both partitions.
Sadly no obvious issue as to the 50% loss of throughput.
Any other ideas out there?  I also made sure IPv6 was off where possible.  Again another Mac Mini on SL is also on the same ETH network doing 13Mb+ to the dslreports.com/stest sites...(the good partition is the same, bad is doing about 5-6Mb/s).

  • Orange Livebox & iMac 24" & Mac mini network, slow transfer using appletalk

    Hi everone
I have my 2 computers (imac 24" C2Duo and Mac mini) connecting wirelessly to my Orange Livebox wireless router to access the internet.
I want though to set up an local network to access filesharing over both of the computers. I found a tutorial and managed to turn on Appletalk and filesharing in system prefs.
The problem is that when i transfer files it takes ages to copy them over, i have full signal on both computers, and they connect really fast to the internet.
I used to have it set up on another wireless router (netgear) and it was much faster than that,
Has anyone got a similar problem? or possible solution?
    many thanks in advance!

looking through i was wondering if i bought a new aiport express base station and connected it to the livebox would it be better?
the mac mini is core duo so doesn't support n speed but my imac would would they both work? any advice would be appreciated!

  • Mac mini slow speed

my mac mini (Late 2009) runs very slow. Is there anything that can be done to increase the speed?

Free disk space is always a question when there's concern about peformance. Software the system loads (see login items and the System Preferences pane) that's not compatible can also impact performance.  Look this FAQ over too.

  • Mac OSX 10.4 Server on a MacMini + Mac Mini Network render farm

    Hi Guys,
I am working at a small vfx post house in Bangkok. We are looking to install some sort of server and network renderfarm.
There was talk of going Windoze based when I first arrived, so I am doing my best to steer them to Mac & OSX. (Most of the current workstations are MacPros)
For a budget solution I said it may be possible to run a OSX Server on a new Mac Mini, and also create a 5-10 machine Mac Mini renderfarm (for rendering 3d scenes from Maya, encoding with Compressor, and 2d scripts from Shake).
    So my questions are:
    1. WIll OSX Server work on a mac Mini?
    2. Will the Mac Mini be able to handle it? It won't be a render box itself, more a machine to keep control of permissions on our central storage (stop people moving and deleting files and saving things in the incorrect place), and control the QMaster Adminstration.
    3. Has anyone had any experience creating a renderfarm from a stack on Mac Minis?
    4. If no one has any idea can they recommend a person/forum to ask?
    Thankyou very much!
    Adam Teale

I found answer to my first question - does OSX server work on a Mac Mini - yes

  • Intel Mac Mini networked to G4?

    Hi there!
Can I connect the new Intel Mac mini to a network containing an old Mac G4 dual running OSX.3.9, and if so will I be able to access files from either computer despite the different operating systems? Also, can I install and run all my old office based software onto the Mac mini (Word, Filemaker, Photoshop, Cleaner 6 etc) and will I notice a significant drop in performance under Rosetta?
    Many thanks!

Microsoft Office for Mac will work under Rosetta, and although it should take a lot of time to load, performance should be correct (comparable to a single G4). I don't know about Filemaker, but Photoshop will definitely be slower on a Core Duo than on a Dual G4, and no Universal version is planned until 2007 ...
I don't know what Cleaner 6 is, but if it's a maintenance application, you should check that it is Tiger-compatible, and if there are any issues with Intel Macs (if possible, trying to find a Universal version would be preferable). Some maintenance utilities cause issues/mess up on systems with a newer OS (because they work "under the hood") so they have to be updated ...

  • Mac Mini Network dropping

I have a Mac Mini sharing a Verizon DSL network with an iPhone 6 and an older iPad.   Except for the iPad, the devices are all up on the latest Apple software.  My iOS devices are typically cabled to USB ports when I'm home using my Mini.
It just started happening recently.   After breezing along for a while on my Mac, my internet service will die, frozen progress bar on accessing web pages, Safari NOT crashed, I still have normal Mac functions except for internet.  Often, restarting the DSL router solves the problem.   Also, restarting the computer has solved the problem occasionally.   I've tried networking the Mini wirelessly AND by ethernet, same result.
The only thing that always works is using iPhone's personal hotspot cellular connection to the internet via USB.   But I have to be careful about my data limits.
My first thought was that my carrier's DSL router and service were repeatedly failing.   So far, they're only interested in having me restart my router, and they don't seem to grasp that I'm having to do this 8 times a day
Now I'm wondering if Yosemite on my Mac mini is causing the problem.   I don't see recent posts on this board about networking problems though.

    Hello whsiii,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you are being disconnected from the internet. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.

  • After installing mavericks on mac mini network printers disappeared

After installing Mavericks on my Mac Mini, all printers on the home wifi network disappeared and cannot get them back.  Tried deleting and re-installing printers and all updates.  Network does not see them from the Mac Mini.  Is there some workaround or solution to this?  Everything worked perfectly until the Mavericks upgrade.

Was there any evidence of a new or update printer driver at the Epson site for use with Mavericks OS X? Even if so, that may not be enough as the peripherial makers can be steps behind a new & different OS.
I have two Epson printers, one is an all-in-one WF845 (bought at 50% off) and an older Photo Stylus 820, this still makes great prints; both work wireless in different ways. However I have what are essentially antiques in both hardware and software.
Not sure if there are any third party drivers that could help as a fix or a patch for the situation you face, if Epson hasn't a working alternative to being printerless. Too bad that paperless society didn't evolve to save a few trees and thousands of gallons in expensive ink.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Need Help With Mac Mini Networking

I sure could use some Apple Expert advise:
I am having quite a problem getting my mac mini to see my Windows (Vista-XP) network. I am only able to see one of my systems when I use the smb://command. First I used this command from the address bar of Firefox, it connected and mounted the drive on my mac desktop.....would not see any of the others. I have (2) Leopard books and have followed the steps correctly.
Went back to the store-local and we did the same functions and without fail the systems showed up quickly in the finder as shared.
I have the WINS: NETBIOS name and Workgroup name correct. I have file sharing, screen sharing turned on.
Can anyone give me some thoughts as to what I am missing here. Again unless I use the smb://command nothing shows up. I have the Finder set to show shared.
Connection to the wireless net, perfect-less than a minute to complete.
    Thanks in advance

Windows PCs aren't visible from the shared area.
Here's a tip: write an Automator application to mount the computer's C drives (you will need 1 app per PC). Then, run that app and open a Finder window and then the PC's IP address will be visible in the shared area. Make sure you know the PC's IP address. Then for convenience, give your new apps their own snazzily named folder and drag that to the dock and make a stack.
Another thing: if you don't already have one, setup a password for your desktop because if there isn't one, serious problems will occur.

  • Mac mini network issues

so i have come to the conclusion that there is something that is not allowing the newest mac mini(with hdmi port) to talk to my router (2wire from at&t u-verse)
i have tried everything i can think of and even took my mini back to the apple store where they swapped out for a new one... this one strangely is worse then the last one...
my problem is the mini will either not connect to the network... or connect and then drop the connection or if it does it moves slower then if i was on a dial up connection!... but only when its wireless... if i plug it in to use theinternet it works perfectly..

    Ipeench wrote:

have you checked for _*wireless interference*_ ?
download iStumbler (free) or AirRadar (it has a trial period) and note the channels other networks in your vicinity are broadcasting on. change the channel(s) of your network as far away as possible from those.
another, more powerful tool, would be KisMac. however, be aware that in some countries the use of KisMac may not be legal !

  • Mac mini slow speed - with pauses

My Mac Mini crashed and I had to reinstall.
Now it runs partly very slow, even with pauses, where I have to wait for responses.
    Start-up takes long minutes.
System profiling tools says HD activity reaches a max of 8MB/s.
CPU workload looks far below 100%.
Is there any experience with this?
How can I check and find out more precise the reason for slowing down?
Mac Mini:  4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM, 500 GB HD, 2,66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, OS X 10.7.2 everything updated

As per the reply to your other post with the same question:
This is not something to worry about or be concerned with. Firstly, the paging counts will depend on how long the system has been running since the last boot, but MacOS is designed to actively page out and in, so in itself, the fact your system shows it is doing so means nothing at all.
If your computer is exhibiting some indication of a problem, I suggest you start a new thread here and describe what you are experiencing. That way we can help you directly with the specifics of your problem. On the other hand, if you have just seen the comments regarding paging and system performance and have checked your own Mac to see what it's doing - the answer is that in the absence of an indication of a problem, it's very likely doing exactly what it ought to be doing!

  • With intel (2009) mac mini networked to macbook, can i use the mini to watch movie downloads on mh hdmi tv, with right cables of course

I have an Intel Mac mini. Main computer is Macbook on ethernet cable. Can I, with the right cables, use the mini to watch downloaded movies on my HDMI tv?

Use your MacBook Pro because it has FireWire. Use Target Disk Mode on your Mac mini so that the Mac mini will display on the MacBook Pro like a external HDD. You'll need a FireWire 400 cable. You can get one for around $10 if you don't have one. And I recommend getting that sooner than later because you can use that for many things if your computer has issues. Anyway, to put your Mac mini is target disk mode, connect the two computers with the wire. Turn on the Mac mini with the "T" key down after your MacBook Pro has started and ready. You'll see the FireWire logo on your Mac mini. And on your MacBook Pro, you'll see the Mac mini's HDD as an external HDD. Do whatever you need. When you finish, drag the Mac mini drive to the trash to eject it. Few seconds later, turn off your Mac mini to complete the whole process.

  • Mac Mini fan speed shoots up with GPU use

    Hello.
I have a 1.83 C2D mini that's recently been giving me problems. I opened it up to install a new airport card (having separate issues with that!) and at some point my fan started acting up. The mini was always dead quiet. Now, anytime I do something GPU intensive the fan shoots up to 4500-5500 RPM (tested with smcfancontrol).
    Here are some examples...
Browsing the internet in safari is normal, 1500-2000 fan speed.
Streaming a movie over my local network from a server through quicktime, ~3100 RPM
Begin watching a video on youtube or running a program like plex or xbmc, the fan goes nuts between 4k-5500 rpm.
If I exit and go back to internet browsing it will slowly come down.
Before anyone asks, I'm on a fresh install of snow leopard right now with same issues, I tried the SMC reset a few times, and I definitely connected the fan wire when I put the mini back together.
Can anyone help me out with suggestions as to what I did or how to fix this? This mini is basically unusable now for my htpc!
    Thanks!

Hi, I have a similar problem. My Mini is from 2005. I will be working online and all of a sudden the fan speed goes waaay up (I make sure to keep the air intake slots cleaned weekly), my connection ends, the screen goes dark (black) and after bringing the screen back into view a few times (clicking the mouse), the computer will shut down. OR maybe it is the Mac running at hyper speed and not the fan.
As I am basically computer illiterate, I have no idea what causes it. I have slower than molasses dial-up and can't even get my AOL to work right anymore.
I had that "Finder" blinking problem after upgrading to this last OSX version, finally got that fixed.
After that fix about a year ago) , my computer ran better. I noticed (for the first time since I got this Mini) that I had an "alias" HD in my home/users folder. Not sure how it got there OR how I recently lost it, but seems I can't figure out how to get it back. Not sure if that is the problem.
Sorry if you don't understand my post, but it's part of my computer stupidity coming out. lol Sure this sure be "parted-out" into several categories
    ok... help please?
    Thanks in advance..... Murphy

  • New Mac Mini - is it capable?

I can't say I'm thrilled about the new update (2014 model), in fact I'm disappointed.
However, it still may be able to cater for my needs.
At the minute I'm using a PC with Win 7. My main usage is browsing the 'net, downloading music and running a few music software programs
which really aren't power/memory hungry. I don't play games on it either.
    PC specs: Intel Pentium dual-core G630, 2.7GHz, 4GB RAM.
I'm thinking, after hours of research, that the new Mini 2.66GHz, dual-core Core i5, 8GB RAM, 1TB Fusion Drive maybe ample for my usage.
Does anyone think differently? Should I upgrade to 16GB RAM? Will Core i7 have any advantage over i5 for me?

I have owned and repaired many Imacs, and owned several of every (2007 and onward) Mac made except the newest mac Pro........   As for the Imac,.....Theyre a HORROR to repair (I despise fixing them, especially the newer ones are near impossible),
and they have FOR A FACT the worse resale value relative to purchase cost.
As for the Mac Mini, I own 4 of them (one is a real OLD clunker however), .......saying "I hate everything" is an understatement, but the Mac Mini is the BEST computer bar none Ive ever owned, and Ive owned a LOT of computers ..... far far more than most anyone.
(used to repair computers ,and had a lot I got free or next to free).
grab a refurb or new 2012 Quad core Mac mini.   Even a dual core is fine unless you plan on vid edits.
Only reason I still own an Imac is because I got it for free broken and fixed it.
Ive told people the BEST "Imac" is a 27" monitor with a Mac Mini on the back (industrial velcro)
    why?
    Far cheaper
    MUCH MUCH easier to repair
    more versatile
best computer resale value (the Mini of course) that exists (Mac or PC)
