Boot and NO USB
Hi,
It's the second time that I power-off my book and, when I reboot no keyboard no touchpad no bluetooth and no USB.
With desktop remote I can check the system management hardware that does show nothing under USB controller.
The first time I've tried every kind of mac reset, NVRAM PRAM SMC Safeboot ecc...NOTHING...
I have solved it with Command+C and new macosx instalation...
Finally I think that was a software problem not hardware....
After a month, today, again the same problem...any idea?
more details,
I have a IOMEGA 1T Ultramax and a USB mouse always connected...
Here the exactly sequence to have a NO USB boot:
- Macbook magsafe, ultramax and mouse connected.
- Ejectetd ultramax and magsafe disconnected.
- Macbook moved to battery working time...and powered off.
- After one night, PowerOn and Keyboard, touchpad and every USB Death in OSX.
PS: USB works in new macosx installations, every kind of reset tried.
Thanks for your time

Q. What sizes of USB Flash sticks are supported?
A. USB Flash sticks are supported in 64, 128, and 256 MB sizes. No other sizes are supported.
Q. Can I use any USB memory stick for this application?
A. No. Only Cisco USB memory sticks are supported.
Q. Can I boot an image directly from the USB Flash module?
A. Yes. USB drivers have been added to rommon, starting with version 12.4(13r)
Q. Can I format the USB Flash module on the router?
A. Yes. You can format the module on either a router or a PC. You must specify "FAT16 file system" as the file system for the PC format process to use.
If your setup satisfies above conditions you can get the router to boot up with the IOS on the USB flash
If you are in ROMMON mode, use 'dev' to find out the name of the USB Flash (should be usbflash0).
set BOOT=usbflash0:
If you are in the router,

I replaced the battery on my RAID card, when I booted my mac pro up, I get the folder with the question mark. I used a boot USB drive to boot and when I looked in the RAID utility, my RAID 5 volumes were no longer showing, advise.
ErnestNot sure if I'm following you. I have 4 hard drives installed on my Mac Pro. I had a RAID 5 configured and functional for about 5 months. My battery died on the RAID card. I replaced the battery, seated the RAID card back in the slot I removed it from. When I booted to the USB drive to look in the RAID utility, I could see the battery is charged but my volumes are not showing.
The drives don't show in disk Utility. I built the RAID with the RAID Utility and they did show there. I have a early 2008 Mac Pro, Mavricks OS running Mac Server -
Prohibitive sign appears when booting Lion from USB flash and DVD
Hi There
I created both a bootable DVD and a USB drive from the Lion download. However I just tried booting my macbook from the DVD and got the "prohibitive sign - ie the circle with a line through it" it was the same when trying the USB flash drive as well. any idea's gratefully appreciated ! BTW my Macbook is a intel dual core.
I'm currently installing Lion on my Macbook pro from the downloaded image OK so don't think the image is damaged.
rgs
Colinwhen you say your MBP is dual core, do you mean core 2duo or core duo?

[solved}Permanent USB boot and new udev?
I'm always booting from an usb stick on my netbook and the new udev seems to create problems in some cases. A real problem in my case would be that udev makes my usb stick not to be found and the netbook unbootable. However, the stick is fully represented in fstab;
UUID=52523bb8-e3fb-40c7-93a5-afe47fb62a91 /boot ext2 defaults,noatime,nodiratime 0 1
UUID=827d9502-aa52-4989-ba55-2afd2a0ed377 /home ext4 defaults,noatime,nodiratime,commit=60 0 1
UUID=b0ab0cc0-9ab9-4b8b-967d-871788b9f4ab / ext4 defaults,nodiratime,noatime,commit=55 0 1
UUID=cd38656a-f2bb-45c3-a23d-6e0d7c09bbb3 swap swap defaults 0 0
I suspect it's ok to update udev but if it's not i'd like some advice to make a fix beforehand.
EDIT: update worked out OK.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php?ti … did=251979
The complete version can be found on the History page, just before the lines were removed:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php?ti … SB_Creator
LiLi changes the label of the USB to MYLINUXLIVE by default but the file archiso-x86_64.conf tell linux to look for installation media named with the month and release date of the file, eg: ARCH_201302 Hence the famous 30 second error.
Anyway, welcome to the forum! Don't forget to mark the topic as solved (by editing the first post) so that other people (including yourself sometimes) may find useful.

Can Macbook Pros (and Macbooks) boot off of USB drives?
I know that you cannot boot off of USB drives in iMacs, but is that the case for Macbook Pros and Macbooks too? I have Ubuntu installed on a 16 GB usb drive and was wondering if it is possible to boot to that usb drive. I cannot simple Boot camp or just dual boot my own way because it is a school computer that they lend me for the year.
I know that you cannot boot off of USB drives in iMacs
That's only the case for some PowerPC Macs. It doesn't apply to any Intel Mac, including MacBooks and MacBook Pros.

[solved] cannot boot from dd usb and cannot install 64 with unetbootin
hi,
been trying to install arch for almost 24 hours now. i just cannot manage to setup USBs to boot from.
first i was using unetbootin, but when the device not found error came up i tried using the methods recommended in the wiki. however, my hp elitebook 2540p cannot boot from the usb created using dd or imagewriter. so i went back to unetbootin and figured out the error was that the syslinux.cfg file needed to have ../../ replaced by archisobasedir=arch archisolabel=KINGSTON. now however, i cannot seem to figure out how to install a 64 bit system. when i run pacstrap all packages have i686 at the end, which i assume means its the 32 bit one.
help
EDIT: ok i have now used 3 different USB sticks and run
sudo dd if=~/Downloads/archlinux-2012.07.15-netinstall-dual.iso of=/dev/sdd
on them. plugging them into the 2540p the laptop just wont boot. it wont get past the first hp screen, where i normally press esc to enter the menu so i can choose boot options. the usb just blinks and nothing happens. this same problem happens with imagewriter in windows.
Last edited by iOfWhy (2012-07-29 13:01:10)McDoenerKing wrote:Was the usb stick mounted, when issueing the dd command?
Did you use "of=/dev/sdx1" instead of "of=/dev/sdx" for the dd command?
Which image did you use?
i wrote exactly
sudo dd if=~/Downloads/archlinux-2012.07.15-netinstall-dual.iso of=/dev/sdd
as mentioned in the edit above, the computer wont get past the hp screen where one gets the option to press the esc key... the usb just blinks and nothing happens...
EDIT:
no the usb was not mounted...
the image was checked with both sha1sum and md5sum...
EDIT2:
ok so i think i am in... i reformatted the usb with fat filesystem, and then went through the second instructions from the wiki, ie installing "Without overwriting the USB stick"... But i am still wondering why i couldnt just do the normal dd method. Is it that the hp bios cannot read certain filesystems?

I have a 2012 Mini with a fusion drive that won't boot from a usb cloned drive. It came with 10.8.2 pre installed. I have zapped the PRAM and reset the SMC. Any thoughts?
When I tried using a recently downloaded (from the App store) version of MtLion 10.8.2 (12C60) I could NOT get the new MacMini to install or boot from a USB I had previously made. I was however able to use the Recovery Mode of the MacMini to create a bootable SSD which I had installed. The problem arose when I went back into Recovery DU as it saw the seperate drives (SSD & HD) as a broken Fusion Drive. Interestingly DU from the boot volume had NO issues and reported NO faults. It was the Recovery DU that identified the faulty Fusion Drive configuration. At this point I am definately out of my depth but my speculation is that the Recovery Volume is being used in some fashion to form the method or pattern that DU assigns files to the drives, System Report sees the drives as seperate volumes with all their individual characteristics.
Disk Utility did not make a bootable USB, I don't have or use CCC or Super Duper.
Here is the longer version I've been compiling:
Having bought a late 2012 Mac Mini(6,2) i7 2.66GHZ with the standard 1TB 5400 HD and 4GB of RAM (base model) I immediately decided to install a Mercury Elite 6g 240GB SSD and up the RAM to 16GB. I received both shipments on the same day and had all my new toys in front of me. After following the video advice on OWC’s website for the installation of the second drive I started the mini and formatted the SSD to accept the OS from Recovery on the original HD. This MacMini shipped with 10.8.2 (12C2034) as the OS, the normal build of 10.8.2 is (12C60). Having used Recovery Disk Utility to format the SSD it came back with an error that DU could’t Repair. I went ahead and installed the OS on the SSD and the Mini booted normally from both drives. The issue I encountered with this setup was that iMovie encountered an “unexpected error” and would not save a completed project. I therefore decided to figure the drive issue out because I suspect the new Fusion File Management software didn’t like my configuration with drives that Recovery DU saw as needing to be “fixed”. After spending some time on the phone with both OWC and Apple Support I took the plunge and used Internet Recovery Disk Utility and allowed both drives to be “fixed” after which DU created a Fusion Drive (Logical Drive) that I then ran Repair Disk on and it showed up as a single drive in DU. It works perfectly as described by Apple’s site:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5446
Having checked the Link Speed and Negotiated Speed they both show as 6g so I’m pleased not to have lost performance due to it being fuzed to a 3g 5400 drive. The biggest drawback is that Apple’s Fusion Management only allows for 1 additional partition and I would have preferred more than that.
I have sourced some additional information here:

http://blog.fosketts.net/2011/08/05/undocumented-corestorage-commands/
If anyone has a factory Fusion Drive could you please post the Link and Negotiated Speeds of both drives? This information can be found in Apple > About This Mac > More Info… > System Report > Serial ATA and the drives should show up as discrete drives with their info listed separately. -
Very slow boot and very slow to enable the keyboard/touchpad
Hello everyone.
After searching this community and elsewhere too, and having tried all suggestions, which I'll list below, I've decided to try to post my case in a new discussion.
I have a Mac mini mid 2011 with 8GB of RAM, OS X 10.8.5.
The problem: when rebooting I have to wait 2-5 minutes of grey screen before getting to my desktop (I have enabled auto-login) and several more minutes of colored-spinning busy icon before getting to the possibility of using my (wired) keyboard or (wireless) touchpad. If I am patient enough, which I always am, after that the system works as perfectly as always.
I have done all suggestions I could get my eyes on, including:
- resetting NVRAM / PRAM
- booting in singleuser mode, fsck, normal boot
- boot in safe mode
- reinstalled the OS (I did not format my hard drive)
- disabled Spotlight
- disabled all login items (only iTunesHelper was active)
- disconnected all external peripherals
Below are the latest console messages since boot, and further down there is more output to show what is currently running on my mini.
Thanks for any help,
Joe

501 346 273 cookied ?? 1 1 W 368640Thanks for pointing me to places to look into that I had not looked into before. I was very hopeful!
I did again the SafeBoot test, and SafeBoot does not show the problem.
Some other findings:
/private/var/run/StartupItems does not appear to exist in my machine
/Library/StartupItems and /System/Library/StartupItems are/system/ empty
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons contains a lot of stuff, at first glance I could not say what might be causing the problem, here is the list

Tecra S1 doesn't boot and hangs at (boot) splash screen
Tecra S1 Model PT831E-107EQ-GR
Problems started a month ago. It randomly didn't booted. After some power off/on tries it finally booted and worked properly. Because it happened more often I've bought a new hard drive (Toshiba 40 GB). I've had Acronis True Image and planned to make a disk clone to the new drive. The problem is that a notebook now doesn't boot anymore so I cannot boot it from A CD nor hard drive. It stops at "In Touch..." logo with "Press [F12] for the boot device selection menu" text and doesn't react any key. I tried to boot with no CD, no hard drive - the same. I also connected internal HD using ATA-To-USB adapter - the same. Does it mean that's not a disk problem but motherboard or other components? Is it possible to enter BIOS before boot selection screen?
Regards,
JacekProblem solved. There was a broken PCB under the CPU socket. I've found that pressing with my finger and holding CPU while booting allowed to startup the system while releasing the finger caused system hanging and its total crash. Our local service tried to repair it but with no success. Finally two days ago we've found a working motherboard (a used one) for about 200 USD and now I'm waiting for installing it in the laptop. Th regular price for a new one (about 400 Euro) is too much, but 200 USD is OK. I do like the laptop because of its ports (LPT, RS232). It's used for programming and controlling some older devices. Newer laptops have no LPTs nor RS232s and it's not easy to find a working USB adapter because the software we're using is even from DOS times and has hard-coded IRQs for those ports.
Anyway, I hope it'll back from the service fresh and new, and of course working ;)
Thank you for your tips.
Regards,

Satellite C50-A-1FT - How to boot from the USB stick
hi,
this is last stop really as have run out of ideas, have asked every techie that know including taking it to an independant computer store.
I am using a toshiba satelite C55 a-1d5, with windows eight preinstalled.
I am trying to get Ubuntu booting off a Toshiba G3 USB stick [sixty four gb capacity],theres nothing wrong with the stick or the multiple distros on it.
so have followed all the advice Ive found and obviously as woud usualy do-on the BIOS/UEFI screen have made sure the boot sequence has USB first, but when using the CSM boot order it wont boot the USB stick it just gets over runned by Windows 8.
I tried to deactive from the BIOS the "secure Boot" or something like that, but it seems to be already off... and its weird because my laptop is new. just bought it 2 days ago.
please can any kind soul take pity and offer reasons why this may be happening or even better, know how to get linux on it? thanks in advance
Message was edited by: yoctomx1Seems that you could solve this issue disabling the secure boot in BIOS as well in registry:
HKeyLocalMachine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\ SecureBoot\State
(UEFISecureBootEnabled needs to be set to 0 to disable SecureBoot within the system)
But to be honest this should not affect the USB booting in case the Windows 8 (or Win 8.1) has been completely powered OFF. -
I have an urgent problem.
As I had a fatal problem with my orignal MBP It's currently getting repaired. However I have my backup with the latest LION on the timemachine drive!
I can now use my brothers MBP but he's running Snow Leopard and not Lion!
Someone gave me the advise to boot from an external USB drive and like this I could use all my saved stuff on my brothers Laptop without bothering his Harddrive at all!
SO I copied all my stuff to this external USB drive and tried to boot pressing "alt" at the start but my external HD wouldn't show up.
How can I get this external drive to act as a bootable drive?
I have the Timemachine Drive and the USB drive connected to the MBP but I can't boot from either the time machine drive nor the USB dirve!
Please help!!You need to partiton and format the drive properly for OS X. You then need to install OS X on the drive using a version that can boot the computer.
Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select the USB hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Afte formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation.
Once you've installed a working OS X that boots the computer you can then go about the task of restoring your software from your TM backup using the Setup Assistant or using Migration Assistant. -
P67A-GD65 (B3) will not boot with external USB DVD connected.
Damnedest thing... just put the build together last night and this was the biggest issue. If I connect my external Samsung USB DVD RW the system stops booting and only displays (B3) in the bottom right corner of my display. If I remove the USB plug the system boots and operates normally. If I connect it to the USB port after boot the system recognizes it and it works fine. The same issue occurs no matter which USB2/3 port I plug it into. I've banged around the BIOS and cannot see any issues in the boot sequence that would indicate an issue. Anyone else in das same boot?

I just came to the forum for the same reason. I'm glad you had a thread already going. Mine is a Seagate 1.5T USB 2.0 hard drive and the screen reads 98 in the lower right corner. Hopefully MSI will get this fixed soon. Other than that the new system is running great.
They are working on it. They sent me a BETA BIOS to try out. The BIOS v1.10B3 was dated 3-17-2011 and it nearly bricked my system though. Here is the response I sent to them the other night after a few hours with a massive headache trying to bring my system back up:
Quote
Tried the new BIOS. While it did indeed fix the USB DVD boot issue and let me boot into windows it created a few new issues. After flashing the new BIOS would not recognize my old overclocking profiles from the v1.8 BIOS.. "hole" error. So I manually adjusted all the settings and saved the new settings. I copied them EXACTLY from my previous settings.. I had screenshots which I had printed out as a fool-proof guide. After rebooting I could no longer get into windows. BSOD. If I tried entering the BIOS by tapping the DEL button while booting the system would freeze at the "entering setup...." screen and never progress into the actual BIOS. I unplugged the power, waited a few minutes and held the clear CMOS button on the back panel down for a few seconds. After rebooting I no longer had video output. After much trial and error I ended up having to also unplug my LCD and cycle power on it as well to get video back. But could still bot get into the BIOS by tapping the DEL key during boot. Luckily I have a laptop with all the files on it and I was able to finally re-flash back to the v1.8 BIOS from a USB drive. I'm not sure what exactly you changed.. but I don't think this new BIOS version should leave BETA status.
To their credit they promptly responded the next AM:
Quote
There were some changes to the CPU voltage, so your overclock settings may not work properly. We are still working on a 1.A release version. It will be updated to our website soon. http://www.msi.com/product/mb/P67A-GD65--B3-.html#/?div=BIOS
I only wish they had informed me of the changes to the CPU voltage up front or included a change log so I could have made an informed decision as to whether or not I wanted to try the BETA BIOS. I was under the impression (mistakenly) that it simply addressed the USB DVD issue. I'll wait for the new release BIOS. I can live without the external USB DVD being plugged in at boot. Bricking my MOBO and having to RMA would be a far less desirable outcome. :p That said.. I'd still recommend this MOBO. It has relatively few issues and MSI support is responsive so far. -
IMac G3 chimes two to four times upon boot and fails to load.
Hello, all.
Today, I moved my aunt from my old iMac G3 to my less old iMac G4. The iMac G3 was working great still at her house, so I decided to take it home with me to replace the iMac G4. I didn't really plan on using it to any extent, but thought it would be cool to have still working.
So I pop it in the car on the passenger seat, drive the mile back home, and unload it onto my desk. I plug power, ethernet, keyboard/mouse and a USB extension cable in, and attempt to boot. When I hit the power button, the iMac makes an attempt to chime, but it kinda does two loud chimes, a faint third chime, and a fourth loud chime. After that, it just sits there with the power button light on and nothing happens.
Now I'm gonna admit it. This was done on an extension cord coming off of a three-way splitter coming off a power strip. Not the safest or most practical way to do this, but I figured that since it worked with my old eMac G4 that had a 17" CRT, it would work with my iMac G3 with a 15" CRT.
So I moved the power directly to the wall. This time, I plugged in only the power and nothing else. I press the power button, and it still does the weird chime and fails to load.
So does anyone have any clues as to what to try? Before you tell me to bust this thing open, I'm gonna say this: I am deathly afraid of CRT monitors, and generally stay as far away as humanly possible from them. The iMac has had a history of few problems, but one of those was a loud, high pitched noise coming from the screen when it was in my aunt's basement. This was probably due to being to cold, or humidity, but switching screen resolutions seemed to fix it. I could switch back and it went along fine. I know it's the screen that was making the sound because my eMac had done the same thing just a week prior, even though it was in an environmentally-sound room, along with some other computers.
Anyway, she has since moved the iMac G3 up to the main part of the house that stays at a fairly steady 75F or so year round and doesn't get too humid. It's worked great, and we were gonna move her up to the G4 for speed benefits and so that she could video chat in Skype. When I last powered down the iMac G3, it was running absolutely fine. I got all the important data off it (thank God) and transferred to the iMac G4. I gently, without bumping it on anything, took it out to the car, gently set it on the foam-cushioned seat, and gently drove it home. When I got it home, I gently took it out, gently took it to the desk, and gently set it down. After a while, I put it screen-down on my lap to read the stuff on the bottom. I undid the RAM cover, popped out a stick, and put it back in. I haven't really gone back to check, but I'm about 90% sure that I got it in perfectly fine. After I looked at it, I gently set it back on the table and did the whole boot process that I explained earlier.
So what in the world could be causing this? Did I really bump it on something, or could it be a weather problem, or could it be that it decided to just stop working at the most perfect time?
Specs are as follows:
iMac G3 600 mHz Graphite
Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 or whatever the last update was
1GB RAM
40GB HD
ATi Rage 128 or whatever it is that's in these things
Combo drive
No Airport card
No internal mods
Never been opened since I purchased it in late 2006.
Also, I think this would be the best place to note that there are little red pieces of what appears to be hard plastic. It looks to be about as thick as the casing that goes around the back. I remember it being in the speaker grill when I first got it, but after moving around, it has moved mostly to the bottom, just under the CD-RW/DVD drive. You can clearly see it through the translucent plastics of the iMac's casing. Not sure what the heck it is, how it got there, or if it has any significant importance to the problem at hand, but I figured it would be worth a shot by shouting that out.
OH, one more thing. I noticed, on the last successful boot at my aunt's house, that the sound would not work. I tried moving the slider up to change the volume, and nothing worked. It wouldn't turn the sound on. Very mysterious. Other than that though, it hasn't had any issues that I've seen.
Sorry for the huge post, but I just want to know if it's my stupidity stopping it from booting or if it really did just decide to end its usable life at the precise moment it wasn't absolutely needed anymore. I will check the RAM and post back if that fixes anything, so if there isn't a reply from me saying that I checked RAM and it fixed it, then it's still being a problem and the RAM wasn't the problem.
And if it really did just decide to stop working, does anyone know of anyone that puts Mac Mini's inside iMac G3 cases? It would be pretty freaking awesome if I could take my Mac Mini, put it in there, and possibly get rid of the CRT and replace it with an LCD panel. I've heard that it's been done before, but again, I'm deathly afraid of the stupid things that are CRT screens. Long story short, one imploded about three yards away from me and it scared the living **** out of me. I really wish all CRTs would just STOP working RIGHT NOW so that everyone had to move to LCD screens. It would make my life so much easier. Hey, why not start with my iMac? All right everyone, if you own a CRT monitor or a computer with a CRT monitor built in, make sure it isn't working by Tuesday, okay? *Shudders in fear of an imploding CRT...*Since you removed/re-installed one of the memory DIMMs from the computer, that's the most likely culprit (as the computer worked perfectly earlier). Remove it again and re-install, making sure that it's fully-seated in the slot and that the locking levers snap closed at each end. Try booting the iMac again. If unsuccessful, immediately insert your Tiger installer DVD when you power ON and hold down the C key. If it boots to the Tiger disk, run Disk Utility to scan and repair the hard drive.
