Boot and shutdown time is much slower
Running a MB Pro with 4gb of RAM. The boot and shutdown times are considerably slower. Any ideas?
Do you have the machine set to auto-login? Or does it boot to the login window? If it is set to auto-login, how long does the machine take to get to the blue screen? How much longer does it take to get from the blue screen to active desktop?
How long does it take to shut down? What applications are running when you shut down the machine?

Is anyone else experiencing long restart and shutdown times?
I installed Mavericks the day it came out. I am experiencing very long restart and shutdown times, well over 2 minutes. I thought the shutdown times with Mountain Lion were bad. Is anyone else having this issue? If so, how did you fix it?
Check your Date & Time and Region Format.

What is a normal boot up and shutdown time?
Can anyone please tell me how much time (secs) might need a 2 months 13'' MBA to boot up and shutdown? ( i don't have any apps download)
Honestly... I don't think there is one "cut and dry" sequence. Plus, you've told nothing about your configuration on startup. Does it load directly into the OS or to the Login window? If it loads directly into the OS what's set to run on startup?
From my experience, it's 12-15 seconds from chime to login window. From there it depends on what's set to run on launch but it's usually another 5-15 seconds until I'm on my Desktop view with all of my startup applications running. -
Internet Speed Through Time Capsule Much Slower than Direct Ethernet
My internet download and streaming speed is pitifully slow. I'm connected by an 802.11n wireless network based in my 1TB Time Capsule. I swear it used to be faster, and has been slowing down. When I'm connected directly to my cable modem via ethernet, I'm getting T1 speeds. But through the TC, I'm getting bad DSL speeds. I originally set up my network automatic defaults. I've tried setting static DNS settings (according to a discussion thread that seems to have worked for others), changing airport channels, rebooting, etc., and nothing helps.
I haven't located much about this problem in other discussions; any threads I have found are mainly unanswered. Am I missing something? Can anyone help?Weejun wrote:

That may be due to a weak WiFi signal. To provide a third data point, connect your MacBook Pro to the a LAN port of the Time Capsule with an Ethernet cable, turn off your Mac's AirPort circuitry, and rerun your speed tests. That will allow you to separate the effect of a wireless connection from the effect of the Time Capsule.
I'd also investigate the signal strength and noise of your wireless connection as described in this post:

Can somebody tell me what is going on with the last update of Mountain Lion 10.8.2?? Since then my computer is pretty much slower and blocken on Safari.
First of all, why did you say yes to Nero Back up before researching what it does with files already on the HDD? When I install Nero, the Back Up is the first thing I disable, it is a nagging pain, there are much better backup programs available. There are several file recovery programs out there to recover deleted files, that is, if that is what happened. Also, if you haven't overwritten the files, so you should be able to find them.

Seems my MBP is starting to start up much slower and shut down a little slower. How do i check to see why this is happening?

After the last upgrade the tabs will begin refreshing at times it slows my movements the page freezes til it catches up. Or if flashplayer is running it will crash. One of the previous versions had this problem but there was an area to go to, to disable it. Ive tried about:config but it still refreshes. Im using Wimdows 7
Thank you both so very much for your quick replies. that is what I thought but the your assurances help me ease my anxiety. And yes the credit union has made a change because now it no longer recognizes my computer as a personal computer when I am using Firefox after the latest Firefox update, and requires me to answer a security question to log in, which is why I had been using Safari, but as I was in Firefox I was lazy and didn't switch browsers.

I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Yosemite and now it runs much slower.
I have a MacBook that came with Snow Leopard. I have used this for about 4 years now and just upgraded to Yosemite. Now my mac runs slower, each page takes longer to load, sometimes when I'm typing (especially right after waking up) it can't keep up, when I click things it seems to not register it or it needs to be clicked harder.. when I power down i have to press the pwr button a few times or hold it (can't figure it out) to make it respond. Help!
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite

Couple days ago vista started installing updates witout my choosing to do so. It took five hours for it to completely shut down. The next morning when i booted vista it showed a bunch of pathnames and then restarted. I selected vista again and vista finally loaded. But is sayz updates were not configured correctly reverting changes. This takes thirty min and when im ready to turn off my computer again it takes over twelve hours for it to install the updates ajd shut down again. Now when the desktop loads im greeted with hundreds of little windows saying bad image and lists a program and says this program was not designed to run on this operating system. What is wrong.
You know, I've been getting a bunch of odd messages on my Vista machine after an update that happened sometime last week. I have no idea what it is, I think they pushed out a bad patch.
I'm not sure what's going on but do a Restore to the state before the update.

I bought my rMBP last August 1 and it was running smoothly and flawlessly before. When I had to restart or shutdown, usually it takes about 2 seconds or a little more than that. When I recently installed these apps and had to shutdown, I was staring at the white screen (when it's shutting down) for more than 5 minutes! I had to force it to shut down.
I uninstalled / deleted these apps and I ran Ccleaner to delete caches and stuff but it still takes a long while to shutdown and restart. Please help!Hi Linc, thank you for your reply. Here is what I have:

Why is connection speed and page rendering so much slower in FF 3.6.13?
After installation of the 3.6.13 upgrade, website connection and page rendering speed became significantly slower than in all previous versions. I searched the knowledge base and Forum and found this post:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/668695#answer-108852
After changing settings as described in the post, speed was easily more than doubled.
I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced the slowdown in connection and rendering speed with 3.6.13. And also why, if the settings worked so well for me, they aren;t standard in FF?http://www.nasdaq.com/asp/quotes_news.asp?cpath=20040608\ACQBIZ200406080001BIZWIRE_USPR_____BW6209.htm&symbol=amd&selected=amd&kind=&mode=basics&formtype=&mkttype=&pathname=&page=news

Error message and run time is really slow-not responding
Hello
I am using Adobe Captivate 5 and have been bulding alot of training simulations over the past few days and have noticed that the system seems to be preforming worse and worse as the days go by. So I wondered if maybe there was a setting or something I'm not doing or doing to affect the preformance?
I have attached acouple of screen shots to illustrate what is happening.
Hope you can help.
Cheers
Heidi. There is some evidence that renaming the file can work but I prefer to open Captivate, select File > New Project > Project from Template and navigate to your current CPTL file. This will then create a normal CPTX file based on your template. I'd use this method just in case there are any issues that might bite you in the end from not doing things the way Adobe originally templates to be used. After you've done this, archive your template away somewhere just in case, and continue your project development using just the CPTX files.

Mac mini server start and restart times
I have a new Mac Mini Server that i jsut purchased 2 weeks ago. It arrived a few days ago and i have already put ram in it and configured it as a raid 1. It seems slower now than before the ram and raid.
Current configuration
late 2012 Mac mini server
osx 10.9.3
2.6ghz i7
16gb 1600mzh ddr3 corsair vengence ram
(2) 1Tb factory apple hard drives configured as raid1(mirrored)
Start time
(4gb) 0:52m
(16GB) 0:52m
Restart time
(4GB) 1:52m
(16gb) 2:14m
Shutdown time
(4gb) 0:24m
(16gb) 1:04m
Any clue as to why my restart and shutdown times are so slow with more ram? i thought ram did not affect this. Secondly does a raid1(mirrored) affect this? it also seems a bit slower to open apps and while on the web
my late 2011 mbp smokes this thing, but it is running an ssd so its understandably going to. what I dont understand is on internet browsing the MBP is still faster. thought webspeed had nothign to do with the hard drive. im a bit new to all this.

When i first got it bootup and shutdown times were pretty awesome (Below 15 seconds for cold bootup and 5 seconds for shutdown). Now after installing many applications (final cut pro, aperture, logic pro, adobe master suite [photoshop, illustrator etc.] and few other apps) my computer seems slow both when booting up (25 seconds) and shutting down (31 seconds), it doesn't seem right to me as the rMBP uses an all flash architecture and is supposed to be fast in booting up and shutting down. Now shutting down took longer than booting up (which is kinda wierd) and sometimes when shutting down the menubar on top is still visible even though the screen had gone to the white image. Can anyone provide any explanations or suggestions to remedy this issue? Thanks in advance.
I am experiencing the same problem - except my Boot time is over a minute!!! - When I received it I was amazed at the boot time speed in comparison to my old MacBook Pro 17" - I've noticed the machine has become increasingly more sluggish when using certain applications such as Photoshop and RapidWeaver.
Reinstalling Mountain Lion had no real affect in improving the situation - I do have large Aperture Libraries - and use Creative Suite 5 reguarly.
Would be happy for some advice on what maybe the issue. - I am bit dissapointed at this point - Spending that much money on a machine that I bought for the performance boost and now that has slowed right down isn't sitting right with me. -
10.6.1 Slow Startup and Shutdown
Did anyone notice the difference between the 10.6.1 startup and shutdown times and the 10.6 times ?
I had to do a clean install of 10.6 and ignore the 10.6.1 update to get back speed in startup and shutdown.
Is there anyway to solve this.
Thanks.I had the same problems, and I figured out the cause. It seems that somehow the ownership of my root directory (/) wasn't assigned to the root account anymore, but to myself instead. This made the kernel prelinking fail since it requires that root is the owner. This is how you solve this after launching the Terminal app:
{quote:title=terminal commands}sudo chown root:admin /
sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
sudo kextcache -system-caches{quote}
You'll have to enter your password after the first command.
Hope this helps someone, since it was really frustrating to have these slower startup/shutdown times for me.
