Boot block recovery

Hello,
Well, this one isn't as desperate as my last post.  Basically, I need to know where to go to get a boot block recovery cd.  Is it downloadable from here?  If so, where?  Otherwise, how else do I get one?  How do I get a backup disk in case this happens again?

hello
i can lead you to the correct download section if you could provide your model number for your BIOS update

  • How do I boot into recovery mode with wireless keyboard

I am unable to boot into recovery mode using either cmd-R or holding down the alt key. How is it supposed to work?
Message was edited by: Niklas Brunberg (better title)

I understand your concerns - I'm glad both of my machines are dual bootable (just in case) and I have my Snow Leopard install disks..... However, this is what Apple has decided, so we need to find the best way to deal with it. Personally, I've tested the recovery mode several times and, at least on my machine, it was not reliable (i.e. it wouldn't work - I tried it again and it did, but it spent more than an hour downloading the entire 4 GB installer again and then another 30 minutes installing it), and on a third try, I found that it had vanished because I had cloned by drive. When you clone, only your system is cloned, not the extra partition.
So, I've decided to rely on a) my bootable clones and b) a copy of the installer (.dmg) in case my clones fail. I don't feel comfortable relying on something that requires an internet connection and a full download to work. But, that works for me; you may want to take a different approach.

  • Windows 7 Installation Media Only Boots into Recovery

Ever since I've updated to Windows 8, I have been really pleased. Everything works fine but when I was automatically updated to windows 8.1, I wasn't happy. I mostly use my PC for gaming and emulating my favourite classic game consoles. But windows 8.1 either
doesn't allow games to play, and makes my emulators run at 15 FPS (normally they run at 55-60). And now, I cant install Graphics drivers! I used to be able to on windows 8. 8.1 will not let me run any of my old Windows 7 Apps either,
So, after spending hours backing up my date, ready to start a fresh windows 7 installation, I figured out that I cannot upgrade, or even start the installation from the USB drive!
I had lots of issues with Windows Vista and used the same installation media to fix the OS. Now, the installation ONLY boots into recovery mode!
Luckily, I use Debian KDE on the side, So I am able to use my computer, but not play any games.
Is there any way to have the installation media boot into Win7 Setup?

    Hi,
Could you provide with a screen shoot?
Please test the USB drive in another pc.
If it is the same issue, it would be caused by the USB  drive.
And then follow the steps to create a bootable USB drive.

  • Installed the latest Java update today on my older iMac and now it won't boot up at all. 2007 model worked fine this morning, now disk first aid say boot blocks f'ed.

I am using an older mid 2007 imac 24 inch running snow leopard 10.6.8
I normally accept software update recs, and today when installing the security update to java, all went fine till restart, when I got the universal "NO" sign, the circle with the line through it and just spinning gray bars underneath.
Booted from system disks, ran first aid, said the boot block partitions or something like that needed updating but disk appears to be ok. Still not working.
Do you think Alsoft Disk Warrior will fix? I am running off external back up drive now.
Thanks for any help or advice. Apple as usual is as useless as tits on a bull, or a screen door on a submarine, pick your simile...

If your backup's up to date it might be less hassle to erase the internal and clone back from the backup. Don't allow the update next time it appears - you're not the only one having problems it would seem.
Note; the message "updating boot partitions" is a standard message that appears after a repair run. It won't go away and should be ignored.
Provided the message "The volume Macintosh HD Seems to be OK" in green has appeared, your disc fle system is fine.

  • Hyper-V guest boots to recovery console after shutdown

    I experience the following scenario:
After a hyper-V host (W2008R2 Ent.) is restarted, the guest VMs (W2008R2 Ent.) boot randomly to recovery console. This means some of the VMs boot correctly into Windows server environment while others boot into recovery console. Whether the recovery console
is booted does not depend on the particular VM i.e. on one occasion a given VM boots correctly next it boots into recovery. Most frequently this happens after updates have been installed and the hyper-v server restarted.
Neither the system log or the application log reveals anything out of ordinary, shutdown procedure is executed in a standard manner without any problems. The same about the bootup after hitting cancel in recovery console. There is no mention about entering
the recovery console in the log.
Can you please guide me through troubleshooting. I suspected that the hyper-v host shuts down before the guests are all off but in this case I would hope to see a notification from the system that the previous shutdown was unexpected which does not happen.

    Hi ,
This issue might be due to the forced restart after updating installed successfully .
As a workaround , I would suggest you to enable No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations :
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-windows_update/disable-automatic-forced-restart-after-windows/8c66d21c-7423-4c2d-a2ef-f4d7685422b0
Also , you may try to set the automatic stop action to save in VM settings to check the result .
    Hope it helps

  • Broken screen, erased main disk, cannot boot to Recovery Mode to reinstall OS X

I am using a MacBook Air from around 2010, not really sure what version of the OS was on it prior to erasing. The screen is broken so I have to either duplicate the screen or use clamshell mode to see anything. When booting in Recovery Mode by holding Command + R, the only option is to use clamshell mode with an external monitor because otherwise only a gray screen is shown.
My issue is a result of erasing the main disk while in Recovery Mode and then shutting down the MacBook. I turned the computer back on assuming I could use clamshell and Recovery Mode to reinstall the OS but unfortunately this isn't working and I can't get anything to display on the external monitor.
I cannot use Target Disk Mode from another Mac because there is no FireWire port and there is also no Ethernet port.
This leads me to these questions in trying to figure out how to reinstall OS X:
    - Is it not possible to boot in Recovery Mode after erasing the main disk?
    - Is it not possible to use clamshell mode after erasing the main disk?
I have also tried booting while holding Command + Option + R to use Internet Recovery or booting while holding just Option, there was still nothing to be displayed on the external monitor after closing the lid to switch to clamshell mode.
I'm stuck, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    FYI:
I have tried booting into Single User Mode, using fsck to repair permissions, but to no avail. However in the Single User Mode I did notice something unusual. When trying to reboot using the command 'exit', a long list of errors came out.
Most were Library/Extensions/... .kext is not authentic; omitting from prelinked kernel.
Some errors were ...: No such file or directory
And afterwards the errors were stuck there and no reboot occurred. I also couldn't type anything.

  • IMac will not boot in recovery mode

I have tried to boot into recovery mode (CMD-R) in Mavericks.  I tried with my hard drive and a Mac Install disk.  Disk utility has grayed out the erase option except for unused space. Can't partition either. I am attempting to donate to my church.  They will use their Apple ID to load their current OSX. Help

If you still have the Install OS X Mavericks.app file from the App Store or can download it again, you can recreate your Mavericks Recovery HD using the Recovery Partition Creator 3.7 utility and the Install OS X Mavericks.app.

  • Invalid bs_jmpboot in boot block

Hi I'm riiiic a new mac user
After a year of discussion, my brother conviced me to but a MacBook Pro 13" and here I am
The notebook (hardaware) is beautiful, superb, marvellous but the software part makes me unhappy.
Hundred of people told me, forgot any error message using a mac, and here we are:
This is an errore message from disk utility:
    Verifying volume “disk0s3”
    ** /dev/disk0s3

How did I get this error ?!?! Like thounsand of new MAC users I got this error trying install win7-64 bit on the boot camp partition.
    I'll now describe my movements:
    - 1. creationof a partition using boot camp
    - 2. installation of WIN7 64bit
    - 3. unable to detect the win partition on finder.
    - 4. boot with pressed alt and selected to boot from windows, anything was great, windows work perfectly (with boot camp drivers) and I'm able to detect and read files from macHD.
    - 5. trayed to find a solution and installed MACfuse e NTFS-3G (it didn't work)
    - 6. opened disk utility and found that "disk0s3" was unmounted and un reperable, the same disk from who I can perfectly boot win7.
Does anyone know how to fix the unbelievable error?
    Thank u

I have exactly the same problem. Although I can boot into windows 7 bootcamp partition, I cannot mount this partition on the mac os X. Have you found any solution yet?

  • Solaris 8 boot block

I have a Solaris 8 machine that was having a hard drive issue. I shut the system down and then it will not boot.
I booted off a CD and ran fsck /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0 and it came back with a superblock error and I typed yes to fix it. I then tried to boot again and it still would not boot.
I then tried to reinstall the boot block but that did not seem to help. # installboot /usr/platform/`uname -i`/lib/fs/ufs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0
Where is the boot block suppose to go? Does it always go on slice 0 of the boot drive or does it go where the root partition is located. The root partition is actually on slice 4 c0t0d0s4.
    # df -k | grep dev
    /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s4 8256660 3799018 4375076 47% /
I have been fighting this issue all day. I am almost to the point of restoring the whole system. Thanks in advance.

If you were seeing "disk:a" then it would refer to the zero slice of the drive (S0).
If you saw "disk:c" then it would boot from the third slice (S3).

  • Mountain Lion only boots into Recovery mode after using iCould lock

    Hi everyone!
I have searched the forums for hours now, but I can't seen to find an answer to my question, so I'd like to ask it.
Recently my system partition failed due to frequent kernel panics caused by a cable in the screen I think. The kernel panics still occur, but I don't know what to do with them.
I managed to save my files and reinstall my osx, which is Snow Leopard (the disc came with the computer). Then I wanted to install my purchased copy of Lion through Appstore, but it said it's no longer available in my country and I couldn't download it again.
Then I decided to buy a copy of Mountain Lion which I tried to install. I managed to do it, and I tried to explore my new operation system.
I tried the iCloud app as well, including the Lock. It locked the computer, and rebooted, but ever since I couldn't unlock it.
When it asks for the password I enter it and it accepts it, but doesn't unlock, only lets me into Recovery mode. Now I reinstalled the whole thing over again and when the Mountain Lion install finishes, it only boots into the Recovery HD without asking.
So if I reboot my computer, no matter what I do it only boots into Recovery Mode.
    Please help!!
    Mike

I was afraid the Apple Store wasn't going to be an option.
Based on your previous post, I was under the impression you could download Mountain Lion, but when you installed it, it locked up again. Not true?
I don't know how to remove it. You can try contacting Apple support through the link below to see if they can help you get this unlocked.

  • Block recovery why it needs so many archive dlogs

Subject: Why does block recovery needs so many archived logs
My blocks were corrupted on Sept 8 (looking at rman backup log).
    I am doing
    recover datafile 19 block 321, 322, 385, 513, 577 restore until time 'sysdate - 15';
I am finding that this command first restores datafile of backup of Sept 7 and then it tries to get
    1.     All the archived logs from Sept 7 until today. If my blocks were corrupted on Sept 8 why does it need logs of next 10 days or so.
    2.     If restore of archived logs from tape somehow fails; then If I rerun recover data file 19 block command,
It starts from the beginning; why?
    3.     Is there a way to do recovery based on archived logs received
So far since I do not think more are needed. Can I just run:
    recover datafile 9 command.
Can it be run while database is in open mode.

Can it be run while database is in open mode. You can try to recover only a datafile if you have the right backup for the datafile and and all archived redo logs needed.
It can be done online if the datafile does not belong to SYSTEM or UNDO tablespace.

  • Could not read boot block (input/output errror) powerbook g4

    Hello
My friend gave me a powerbook g4 and a copy of osx lion, I would like to install it but the internal hardive is not available within the "select Destination" area of the  installation process. I tried to repair the disk which is labelled Disk0s1, but shortly after it is underway i recieve this message.
**/dev/disk0s1 could not read boot block (input/output error) Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit. 1 non HFS volume checked, 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error.
Within disk utilities the Disk01s is grey, I can try to repair it but the above error occurs. Do you know what the problem is and how I can fix it?

Since you are going to install system fresh, it sounds like, you should erase the drive.  Boot from the installer disc, then select the language but do not start the installer.  From the menu bar, you should have either an Applications or an Installer menu. From one of the menus, you can then start Disk Utility.
From the drives and volumes pane, select the internal drive hardware listing.
This will now allow you to partition or erase the disc.  Now click the Erase tab and select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format and then click the "Erase" button.  You can name the volume that will actually be created, like for instance "MacintoshHD" or whatever you want.)
Once the erase has completed, you need to check the information for the hard drive at the bottom of the window.  Be sure that the partition scheme is Apple Partition Map.  If for some reason it is something else, like GUID, you won't be able to install MacOS on it.  You will need to click the Partition tab, click the "Options..." button and select Apple Partition Map, then click the "Partition" button.
Once this is done, then you can quit Disk Utility and you should be able to install Tiger on that HD.

  • MacBook Pro OSX 10.9- Cannot boot into recovery mode or use USB bootdisk

    Hi guys,
I'm having an issue with my MacBook Pro running OSX 10.9. I want to re-install the operating system, however the computer freezes when being booted into recovery mode or when rebooting into a USB boot disk. Either the spinner freezes or it moves to a screen with just the Apple logo.
    Thanks in advance

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List

    Thank you.

Looks like some files might be damaged. You will likely have to reinstall the operating system. I hope you have a back up of your data.
