I wanted to partition 260GB for Windows 8, so what am I doing wrong?
I have a new (one month old) MacBook Pro 15" with Retina Display, 16GB RAM and 768GB solid state drive. I'm running OS X 10.8.3.
Every time I click on the "install" button on Boot Camp Assistant after defining how big I want the Windows partition to be, it crashes and gives me similar error codes in the error log.
I've spent several hours with Apple Technical Support including one of their Engineering supervisors. We tried everything froma clean install of the OS to actually trying to install Windows 7 on a BRAND NEW MacBook Pro identical to mine. Same result - its a bug.
I've left a message for the Engineering supervisor who's been working with me. This problem will be elevated for a fix on a new OS X update.
Frustrating, especially as I've been able to successfully create a Windows 7 partition with Boot Camp Assistant on my iMac (3.4 GHz, 16GB Ram, iTB Hard drive).

Boot Camp "back up your disk before partitioning"
what does it mean when it says "Back up your disk before partitioning it or instaling windows."? what does it have to back up?
Everything you did on your Mac is what it means, email you received, pictures you took, letters you wrote, OSX itself.
Back Up your Mac (if you don't back up you are on the way to losing your stuff anyway)
But if your stuff does not matter to you, don't back up. -
Macbook crashes before partition
i want to install windows on a mac with boot camp but it keeps crashing after choosing how much space i want for windows, other mac apps crash too but not as much as boot camp.

How to back up Boot Camp and how to resize FAT partitions
I suppose someone has already addressed this topic herein, but in case someone needs help I am leaving with you what I learned.
I started with a partition sized to 18 gigs and installed Windows XP on it. Soon the drive became full after I installed software and various disc images so I can play games. I wanted to resize the partition to 28 gigs without losing my data, leaving 46 gigs on my Mac partition.
I was not sure what would work so I chose several methods of possible restoration. The easiest was to boot to the Mac and use Disk Utility to make a Disk Image of Boot Camp. The next precaution I took was to back up my settings with the Windows Files and Settings Wizard. Lastly, I booted to Mac and turned on viewing of hidden files. Then I copied all the files off the Windows XP partition onto an external drive. I also tried Acronis True Image while in Windows but it was not compatible.
I also discovered a free program called Winclone (http://www.tuaw.com) that makes an image of the Windows partition and restores it for you, much like Disk Utility works.
In OSX, I ran Boot Camp Assistant again to rejoin the partitions. Then I ran it again to partition the new drive to 28 gigs.
The first thing I tried to do was to use Winclone to restore the Winclone image. That failed with errors. Then I tried to use Disk Utility to restore the drive and Disk Utility would not allow me to restore the disk image onto the drive. I am not sure why Apple is so unsupportive of implementing their Disk Imaging technology within the context of their own self-created Boot Camp technology.
Anyway, the last thing I could try was to copy the files back onto the new partition or to give up and reinstall Windows and use Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to restore my Windows settings.
After partitioning the drive with Boot Camp Assistant, I copied the files over and rebooted. Windows said there was an unsupported drive. Then I realized that I missed a step in the installation instructions provided by Apple for Boot Camp. I forgot to format the drive again using the Windows XP install CD, that the Apple says is necessary.
So I booted up the Windows cd and erased the Boot Camp partition and made it a FAT drive so that I would be able to copy my files over to it from OSX, which I would not have been able to do had the drive been formatted as NTFS.
As XP started to install its software, and it started to copy files from the cd, I pressed the power button to shut down the Mac. (Do this at your own risk. I am warning you that this could damage your computer, so do NOT try this if you feel uneasy about it.)
I booted into OSX. Then I trashed the few files that Windows had started to install on the Boot Camp drive. Then I copied all my backup files back onto the partition.
Here is a widget that will allow you to view hidden files in OSX: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/developer/hiddenfiles.html
I rebooted the Mac and held down the Option key while restarting. When the Mac and Windows drives appeared at the startup screen, I selected Windows, which booted up successfully. It then recognized the partitioned drive as new hardware and required me to restart, which I did.
I wanted to convert my drive from a FAT drive to a NTFS-formatted drive.
This is how I did that:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb456984(TechNet.10).aspx
After converting Boot Camp to NTFS file system I noticed an immediate speed increase in Windows XP. I
In conclusion, Disk Utility is a good method of backing up your partition, as it allows you to use a password to make a disk image of your drive. It also allows you to copy the files off the disk image onto the Windows partition. But it would be a lot simpler if Apple allowed them to use Disk Utility to restore the whole image back onto Boot Camp.
Other methodologies I did not get to explore because I am happy with my results:
http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-71165.html
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=241035After copying your files back to the Boot Camp partition you may get this error message when you boot up Windows XP. Notepad opens with this message "[.ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\System32\Shell32.dll,-21787". If this happens to you please see this article from Microsoft. I had to perform both Methods 1 and 2 to remove the messages. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330132

Hi
I have upgraded to Leopard and tried to install bootcamp last night only to get the same message as above.
+"the disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved"+
It goes on to say.....
+back up disk and use disk utility to format it as a single mac extendable (journaled) volume. estore your information to the disk and try using boot camp again.+
*I have a few issues:*
1. my volume is already formatted to mac extendable with journal.
2. what software do i use to back up my existing volume?
3. What is the best way to remedy this?
TIAHiya
I eventually had to do a back up of;
mail
safari
+important .dmg files+
iphoto
itunes
movies
+other major stuff I wanted to keep+ .....
......to my external HDD and selected the option to do a clean installation for Leopard, rather than an upgrade. From reading other posts, bootcamp possibly has a problem installing on a HDD that has been 'used' - IYKWIM
As soon as the new fresh version of Leopard appeared. I installed bootcamp with no problems on my mac.
The only problem I am now facing it that when it boots up to WinXP, I lose connection of my bluetooth mouse/keyboard - due to apple installing the required drivers from the Leopard DVD. I will fix this on Monday when I get a hold of a USB mouse. '-)
The only other major thing to do is print out the bootcamp instructions before you start the process - they help a lot - I needed to refer to them, even though I have installed windows plenty of time through the years.

Boot Camp "No Bootable Device" after OSX Partition Resize
I have a MacBook Mid/Late 2007. I started out with a 500GB drive that I partitioned 100GB for Windows 8 in Boot Camp (yes, I know only 7 is officially supported, not the point as it worked fine.) I wanted to try Mavericks so I resized my OSX partition down 100GB to make a new 100GB Mavericks partition. After I installed it and played around, I noticed when I booted with the option key, my Boot Camp partition was missing. I thought i was becaus eI had too many partitions, so I deleted Mavericks and resized my main OSX back to where it was when I started. The Boot Camp partition still won't show up when I hold option on boot, but when I run Boot Camp manager on OSX it wants to remove it, so it knows it's there. It also shows up in the startup disks pane, but if I select it and reboot, I get a "No Bootable Device -- insert boot disk and press any key" message. If there a way to bring back Windows?
Here's the kicker: My optical drive DOES NOT work. I installed Windows 7 off DVD long ago before it quit working and the only way I got Windows 8 on was through a downloaded upgrade. I know I should get it fixed, but I don't have the money (and I never use it, and this is 2 that have died on me in this laptop.) My system can't boot anything other than OSX off flash drives or external DVD drives (I tried, and I tried reEFIt, neither worked.) So I need a solution that doens't require a boot CD if at all possible.Nhammake wrote:
I can get to and boot OSX (it's what I'm using now as this is my only laptop), I just can't boot Windows. All my files show up fine on both partitions.
You can't add/remove or alter the partitions if Boot Camp is installed, Windows will cease to boot.
To fix it, erase all paritions except OSX. Start over, 2 partitions only (OSX and Boot Camp) -
MacBook Pro (Boot Camp) kernel panics, application crashes
I'm currently using a mid-2012 15-inch MacBook Pro with Windows 7 Home Premium installed via Boot Camp. Most of my daily activities before last week were playing games on Steam (for both Mac and Windows), editing videos in iMovie (Mac), and browsing the internet on Google Chrome (both). However, starting last Thursday, September 20th, at random intervals, my programs kept crashing without any sort of heads-up or computer slowdown leading into them. This was occurring on Mac with Safari, Steam and iMovie, and on Windows with the newly installed Borderlands 2, Steam, and Skype. Not to mention, Google Chrome's Shockwave was crashing every 15 minutes or less, and the "Oh Snap!" error page popped up without me doing anything on the pages that crashed (both on Mac and Windows).
To add to the problem, I was given my first blue screen after a string of application crashes last Thursday, and soon after upon switching to Mac, I received a kernel panic. From what my friends and I have researched, this has happened due to memory corruption, seeing as how the blue screen errors all had codes relating to that, like 0x0000003B and 0xc0000005. However, no matter what I've tried to fix this, be it cleaning the Windows Registry, using MemTest to see if the RAM caused this, running Disk Utility on Mac, running the Apple Hardware Test, or uninstalling/removing potential malware, nothing has seemed to work. Borderlands 2 keeps crashing at random intervals, Safari still quits while a YouTube video is still playing, and most annoyingly, I get kernel panics and blue screens while I'm talking to my friends on Skype.
Another interesting problem is that I can't install a Mac OS X 10.7.5 update; it tells me the downloaded file was corrupted every time I try download it and it can't install as a result. I'm stuck on Mac OS X 10.7.4. Yet I'm able to install Windows updates without any problem whatsoever. Why is this?
My question is, is it best to take this in for repair, or is there something else I can do to fix this that I haven't tried yet? I don't consider myself to be any good with the computers I use, so I have no idea if I should have seen/identified the error already.hi,

Boot Camp can't create a Windows partition
Hello,
I'm trying to create a new partition to install Windows 7 on, but I am unable to do so.
At first I tried to do this with Boot Camp Assistant, but it didn't work.
Then I tried to create a FAT partition with Disk Utility, which didn't work either.
So I verified and repaired the disk, tried to create the partition again, yet it still didn't work.
I verified and repaired the disk and tried to create the partition while running the OS, in Safe Mode and from the Mac OSX Install DVD.
Neither of them worked.
I noticed while running the OS, the info of the HD said the capacity is 749.81 GB, while checking that from the Mac OSX Install DVD it only says about 700 GB (I mentioned 698.6 GB).
Strange..
It might also be important to mention that I recently (2 days ago) I installed a new HD: Western Digital Scorpio Black 750 GB, and today I swapped my 2x 2GB RAM for 2x 4GB RAM (Samsung).
On my previous HD, the Fujitsu 250GB, this proces was no problem at all. I installed W7 on that drive just a week ago.
I made a clone of the Fujitsu HD and "back-upped" it to my new WD HD. The W7 partition on the Fujitsu HD was 50GB, which is the difference in capacity mentioned above. I'm not sure if there's a link here..
I've got a MacBook Pro from mid 2009.
I'm not sure what to do next... I'm stuck!
Any help is greatly appreciated!Did you do an upgrade to Leopard? If so, some files may be scattered over your HD, making it impossible for BC to find a single contiguous area on the drive.
Also, be sure you did not have eDisk installed - that's the thing from the TechTools disk that comes with AppleCare.
This is not an uncommon problem. It's not just you.
If you have a complete backup of Leopard, you can use the DU to make a single partition. You may be lucky and not lose any data, but backup anwyay.
In DU, repair the disk, if necessary and verify/repair permissions.
Once you have done this try again.
If BC still fails, you will need to erase the HD and then copy everything back from the backup.
I always suggest a bootable clone for the backup and be sure to test it first to see it works. -
I'm trying to remove my Windows partition and delete Boot Camp altogether off my laptop. When I try to remove the partition, I get an error saying "An error occurred while restoring the disk to a single partition."
Can someone please help?Boot from another hard drive or DVD and repair with Disk Utility.

Boot Camp 2" The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be.."

I'm seriously at wits end with this problem, and still looking for a solution. If any of you want to chime in with an answer, I will eternally grateful.
Oh, and just to get it out of the way;
+"defrag your drive with ____"+
Tried it, didn't work.
+"repair your drive using Disk Utility"+
Tried it, didn't work.
+"restore your OS using the start up disk."+
Tried it, didn't work....and now have to upload all my music files the hard way. Why can't iTunes just take it from your iPod? Who knows.
+"Try lowering the Gs to be partitioned."+
Tried lowering it to 30g, didn't work, and can't sacrifice more.
+"use an external Hard drive to copy your Hd...."+
No. I'm not about to blow money on an external HDD, nor do I feel like I should have to.
Specs: Boot Camp 2.0, Mac OS X 10.5.8. (didn't see a way to DL the newer version of Boot Camp.)
Message was edited by: JtannyHow large is your HD and how much room do you have left?
There can't be ANY files at all in the new partition and there must be room in the old partition to move the "loose" files back to the old area.
I think I read that most "Defrag" programs won't move an "Anchored" file. Meaning it's used buy the 'Root' part of the Mac OS. If any of those files are in the new partition Boot Camp won't install over it, or move it and will just give a warning about not being able to move the files, etc. And it's not suggested to move it unless you knew what you were doing.
"+""use an external Hard drive to copy your Hd....""+
+""No. I'm not about to blow money on an external HDD, nor do I feel like I should have to.""+
What are you going to do when your internal HD dies?
They "rarely" give you any warning at all. You can get an External for as little as $50+- at Amazon, EggHead, etc, just get the size you have now or slightly bigger and then you have a "Backup" drive for the Mac AND Windows to use. Apple even has a BackUp program you can use. At the very least if your internal HD dies then you have another bootable drive to use until you buy another one.
Unfortunately, if you want the Windows install, your best best would be like @Csound1 mentioned, get CCC or SuperDuper and "clone" the drive onto another HD and just copy it back. Takes a couple of hours and your done. Copying it back like that automatically defrags the files as they are copied back. You CAN'T just copy/paste the HD onto another drive as the Finder can't copy the invisible" Root" files.
OR you can wipe the hard drive and start fresh and then spend a half a day to reinstall the Mac OS, then Software Update everything, then install all your third party applications, update those, music, movies, etc, then install Windows, etc.
"""+restore your OS using the start up disk+."""
+""Tried it, didn't work....and now have to upload all my music files the hard way. Why can't iTunes just take it from your iPod? Who knows.""+
I don't think "Restore" works because you may have some "Root" files that don't get erased?
And "Restore" only reinstalls the MAC OS and nothing else, so you shouldn't of had to do anything with ITunes. You definitely want to back everything up anyway, but in theory, it doesn't touch any applications or 3rd party stuff.

Boot Camp "Assistant" reboots and set's up Boot Camp to partition, install drivers and start the Windows installer. Boot Camp is actually an exe program. If you have done the Mac Software Update it's probably as high as you can get with 10.5? Go to the Boot Camp main page and check out the "downloads" section and see if they may have a manual download for you. You also can update the Apple drivers from the Windows side once you get there. -
Hey! So here i am. i open up Boot Camp Asistant, get to partioning. start partinoning then after about 5 minuets i get this message:
*The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved.*
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.
I have checked in Disk Utility & More and i am not sure hoe to fix it.
Here is a picture of both my "Disk Utility" and the Boot Camp Error:
BC ERROR: http://twitpic.com/ehre1
Disk Utility: http://twitpic.com/ehrdo
So if you could help me out here it would be great, as i have just brought a copy of Win XP SP3 and i really wanted to play my new game :P
Thanks
—AlexFirst I can't say I'm a MAC expert, so keep that in mind. But if I tell you my interpretation of that issue, which I also have actually, it might help. I think the probably is that when you partition a HD you can't really be on it, so the Mac needs to allocate enough memory which is either the minimum needed for windows or the amount you choose then separate those needed memory cells from the other memory cells used by the Mac so it can create the partition. Then formats the memory in the partition. However if there isn't enough unused consecutive memory cells then the Mac needs to move files to create consecutive memory cells to partition. But, as you can see, sometimes those files cant be moved so the Mac needs to have the entire hard drive formated so the files can be moved. At that point the partition can be inserted without an issue. Of, course the idea of formatting your HD is not exciting to say the least. Its not hard but it can take awhile to do and then you'll have to reinstall all the third party programs you have. An alternative idea to explore is to use the firewire port on the Mac [if you have one] and you likely do. And get an external HD to run through that and put windows in the external HD. Firewire is a higher speed data transfer option then USB. You can run programs through firewire just as USB does to a lesser extent. But there are limits. So it may, in the end, not work for what you want.
But I think what it's telling you is you need to format your entire HD. But, like I said I'm no expert. If you find the solution let me know. Like I said, I have the same problem. -
Boot Camp Assistant says Install rather than Partition
I have a second gen MacBook (Intel core 2 duo) I installed Windows XP via bootcamp back when I had OSX Tiger. Today, running OSX Lion, I deleted the windows partition with boot camp assistant, wanting to increase the hard drive size and install Windows 7. I successfully deleted the windows xp partition, and restarted the computer. Now I want to repartition the hard drive and install windows 7. I open boot camp assistant, click continue (only option) check 'install windows 7' and not 'download the latest windows support software from apple' as I already have this on an external hd and click continue. I choose the hard drive size, and boot camp assisnt has the option to 'install' and NOT 'partition'. I dont know why this occurs. anyway, if I click install, boot camp assistant says 'the installer disk could not be found' even though my windows 7 dvd is in the computer.
So, my question boils down to, 'why can't i partition my disk for windows 7?'
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! After restoring, I lost my Recovery HD partition. I am currently working to get a new one. Perhaps I will install it AFTER boot camp is finished, which might solve the multiple-partitions error? I could use some advice here.
At this point, bootcamp is giving me a new error which says some files cannot be moved. I am moving this to a new discussion HERE:

Boot Camp Assistant / Disk Utility Stuck during Partitioning
Hello Apple / Apple customers,
I have a 15" MacBook Pro (Mid-2010) with a 320GB hard drive. I recently partitioned my hard drive to install Windows 7 in order to install and play a Windows game. Everything installed fine, but I discovered that I didn't have enough space partitioned to fit the game (I did not anticipate it taking 14 GB to install). So I deleted the partition. Now I'm attempting to make a larger partition and restore a Winclone image that I made of the previous partition on that new partition. The problem I am receiving occurs when I attempt to make a new partition in both Boot Camp Assistant and Disk Utility. During the partitioning process, Boot Camp Assistant stalls at about 30% and stays that way for hours, and Disk Utility also stalls during the "shrinking disk" part at about 30% as well. Is there anyway that I can fix this? I already tried repairing my hard drive by running Disk Utility via the Installation Disc, and it says that my hard drive is fine. Thanks in advance for the help.Reinstall Leopard, but first use the Leopard install DVD Disk Utility to reformat the HD to one partition. See:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh14.html
It's for Tiger, but applies for Leopard as well.
WARNING, you must have your data saved somewhere else.

Failed boot camp install - how to remove windows partition?
Hi There,
After a failed boot camp install, boot camp no longer sees (or can remove) a windows partition - Disk Utility can't seem to remove it and if I use:
$ diskutil list
It shows up as partition 5 "Microsoft Reserved"
I also have a portion of free space that I can't seem to incorporate back into the main OSX partition - how do I remove the windows partition and make the drive a single OSX drive again?
Any help would be much appreciated
Cheers
Ben
- New Mac Pro
- Installing onto internal 1 TB SSD
- 10.9.3
- Windows 8.1Just incase others have this issue, this wasn't caused by using Disk Utility (Disk Utility couldn't remove the partition anyway) it was caused by repeatedly trying to format the Boot Camp partition using the Windows installer when Windows refused to install.
The solution is an Apple tech note (I can no longer find it sorry) that sates that no other hard drives besides the internal HD and the Windows USB flash drive can be connected while installing windows.
Cheers
