Boot Camp 3.0 and hidden files

I've upgraded Boot Camp to 3.0.
Windows XP can access Mac disks except all files in my /Users folder (Desktop, Documents, Library, etc.).
Clicking option "Show hidden files and folders" only shows mac's hidden files.
Can anyone help?

By deleting the Xauthority hidden file on Mac and then booting into windows, it will work GUI wise. However once you are back in the Mac OS X environment and if you launch any application using X11 or X 11 itself, it will rebuild the Xauth. file once more and the temp hack is no longer usable. So for all guys that want to use mac70's hack and never use X11 then go for it if you only want GUI listings of your user home folder files.

Why don't you (generic most every post lacks critical details) be clear and say you never used Mac OS etc.
But, I did try to anticipate and give you what you needed.
Excel is one of those rare programs that, if they are extremely large complex spreadsheets still tend to run better under Office for Windows.
A VM won't do for that but it does make it easier to transition. As in: install Windows natively, then use VMware Fusion or Parallels to attach to the partition and OS. That way you can run Windows as Guest OS VM under Mac; and still run Windows natively dual-boot when needed.
The word "see" was not what you wanted, was it? really? you want to open and make changes and keep it on Windows side rather than Save As or copy to Mac

Upgrading to Vista with Boot Camp 2.1 and XP SP3

I decided to buy Vista to see for myself how it works. It hasn't come in yet, but I want to know if I can upgrade to Vista when I have Boot Camp 2.1, and Windows XP Service Pack 3.

I have upgraded to Vista SP1 from XP SP3 successfully on one of my macs. Once Windows is loaded and up and running then you can upgrade it just like you normally would when running a Windows based PC.

Accessing files on boot camp windows partition and Mac OSx partition

Before I install Windows 7 64 bit on my iMac using Apple's instruction manual, I have a question. The manual states:
*+FAT—Provides better compatibility, allowing you to read and write files on the Windows volume from Mac OS X. This partition must be 32 GB or smaller.+*
*+If you’re installing Windows Vista or Windows 7, the Windows partition must use the NTFS format.+*
I can read, but I want to be sure I understand these two statements as they relate to each other. Because the Windows 7 partition must be NTFS format, does this mean that there is no way to read, write or copy files from one partition to the other, no matter what the partition size is?
If that is the case, I assume the best way to move files from one partition to the other would be to use a flash drive or is that also not possible due to the file format on the flash drive? I also have an external hard drive used for time machine. Any way to use that?
How will I move files from one partition to the other? And yes, I really want to do this.

Also wondering when I try to partition my disk I get this error message "The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved- back up the disk and use disk utility to format it as a Single Mac OS Extended (journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using bootcamp again" Any one know what that means or can answer the win 7 question??

ITunes library and Boot Camp (Snow Leopard and Windows 7)

At the moment, I'm using a Macbook Pro running both OS X and Windows 7 Ultimate using Bootcamp to facilitate this.
The problem that I have is that I keep my iTunes library on an external HDD. In OS X, this isn't a problem as the OS X version of iTunes manages the music on it; adding new podcasts that it downloads and also adding new CDs that I rip to the HDD.
In Windows 7, I installed iTunes and have only run a single "Add folder to library", meaning that only the music that was on the HDD on the first instance is recognised by iTunes. This means that if I were to switch from Windows 7 to OS X, download some podcasts and then go back into Windows 7, iTunes in Windows 7 won't find these new podcasts.
The other (and nowhere near important issue) is that if I forget to disconnect my iPhone before switching over to Windows 7, iTunes in Windows 7 will wipe the apps from it.
Does anyone know how I may be able to resolve this

OS X Mavericks includes Boot Camp Assistant 5, but it's compatible with Macs that can only use Boot Camp 4. Note that you only have the Boot Camp Assistant as the version 5, and not the drivers or anything else, so there's no problem in installing a 32-bit Windows 7 version if you want. Also, you won't lose your Windows copy after upgrading to OS X Mavericks, so don't worry

Flash capacity and hidden files

I am about to order a new Mac Pro and am trying to work out whether to get 512 or 1TB flash storage
I have an 2007 MP, 4 drives in it but looking at the main drive and its content I cannot account for all of the used space.
The main (boot disk) shows 567GB used
Using Cmd + I on all the folders in the 1TB boot disk I get the following:-
So it appears that most of the unaccounted for space (136 GB of 146GB) is sitting in the Users folders.
So my questions is what would the "hidden" files be and would those reside on the flash drive in a new Macpro
Assuming I will put all of the Document files etc onto the Pegasus storage and that I would have the same apps on board, would it be safe to say to allow for
i.e. the 512GB should be sufficient !

Would I be right in thinking that the User's directory would, in the case of the new Mac Pro, always reside on the flash drive?
So in my case above, providing I moved all User content (i.e. Documents, moves, desktop content,) to the Pegasus storage then I could expect to need 256 GB of storage and a 512GB flash storage should be sufficient to run all my apps etc?

Boot Camp Assistant: "Can't move files"

Hi,
I'm trying to create a 500GB partition with BCA and it keeps giving me the "Can't move files, back up data, format, etc." error.
I've currently got a 2 TB HD; the first time I attempted this I had about 633GB of data on the drive, so about ~1350GB free. I received this error so I bought iDefrag and let it run for a long time (~14 hours or so) until it was finished, and again I received the error.
(Prior to defragging I verified and repaired permissions through Disk Utility)
So I transferred a 110GB file over to my external drive, deleted off ~150-180GB of movies and TV shows (which are safely stored on another computer), culled some other stuff, did a verify + repair permissions, and now I'm only using 378GB of a 2TB disk.
It still won't work. I really, really, don't want to format and restore my info.
Any idea's how I can get this working? Thanks

Clone your drive and erase restore
iDefrag has to be run from a CD you burn, or from another hard drive. I definitely favor always having bootable clone backups for OS X.
Has to not have locked files where installers can place there
Boot CAmp Assistant should have iDefrag capability, but it doesn't (should also by now just be part of Disk Utility too).
Partitioning relies on not just free space, but contiguous and unfragmented.

Can't use Boot Camp due to error with files

I am trying to partition the hard drive on my mac and install windows so that i can run windows based programs and other reasons, but my mac is not new and it is harder than brain surgery to locate all the files i need to back up and the ones i dont. when i open boot camp, it starts partitioning the hard drive for a few minutes and i get the error message: The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use disk utility to format it as single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again. i cant format the disk because the computer only has one disk. and i cant format it. Please help!

A very good way to handle this is to buy CarbonCopyClone ($40 download) and an external drive. Then clone your startup disk to the external, and clone it back.
What has happened is that after several years you have created so many tiny unused disk spaces (some only 1 or 2 blocks large) that OSX cannot relocate everything and make room. When you "clone back", all files will be in a large section at the bottom of the available disk space and there will be plenty of room for BootCamp.

Boot Camp ****: HAL.DLL and other problems

Okay I am really frustrated, so if I come off like a jerk... well, I don't mean to, but my frustration is going to bleed into the tone of this post. Let me ask you not to reply that I have a bad Windows CD. I've been a gosh darn network administrator for over ten frakking years now, and I successfully use the same bleeping CDROM disk on dozens of other computers all the bleeping time.
Okay, now that I've got that off my chest, here's the situation: I have a Windows XP Pro CD with Service Pack 3 slipstreamed into it. I downloaded it from Microsoft. My organization has a Select Agreement with them, so we can do that. There is a winnt.sif file on it that automates a few things (such as entering the key number), but it allows me to do the partitioning and formatting manually.
If I leave the partition as FAT32, then when the Windows installer attempts to reboot into the GUI portion of the install, then it says, "Disk Error. Press any key to restart." Pressing keys does nothing, so I have to power it off.
If I format the partition with NTFS (tried both Quick and Full formats with the same results), then it finishes the text mode portion of the install, reboots, and tells me that I'm missing HAL.DLL.
I have tried several different sizes of partitions (partitioning with the Boot Camp utility... not the Windows installer), and been through the text portion of Windows install at least a dozen times. I have searched the Net, and failed to find a CD that would allow me to attempt installing Windows off my RIS server. I have burned new copies of my CD onto CDR and CDRW media. The only thing I cannot do is obtain an original XP CD since our organization isn't big enough to qualify for Microsoft to send us Select CD's (and my boss ain't gonna pay for a retail copy just so that I can run Boot Camp). And please don't ask me if I'm properly licensed to install Windows on my Mac. I know the Windows EULA inside and out. It's all legit.
Any help here would truly be appreciated.

Perhaps you need to use an XP cd with sp2 slipstreamed, install boot camp update 2.1, then SP3.

I have a MacBook Pro 13" and I downloaded the upgrade recommended to use Boot Camp 5.1.5621 for Windows 7. The file is saved in my Downloads file and am needing to know if it linked itself to my factory installed Boot Camp Application?
If it did link the Downloaded Updates can I move the file Boot Camp 5.1.5621 without messing up the path to the Boot Camp Application?

Boot camp partitan crashed and re booted with strange partiation left..

I was trying to partition my HD with boot camp, but about 4 minutes later I had a crash. I re-started and my Mac HD and desktop was all there, but my hd was missing like the 10 gb I wanted for XP. Where is it? Prior to partitioning it was like 28 gb available and now 17gb, but no Windows? What to do? Any ideas??

How do I install Lion on an MBP with Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Boot Camp'd XP and a Master Boot Record?

I think this is called "a pickle."
The machine is a 13" MacBook Pro, 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo w/ 4 GB RAM and a 500 GB HDD.
The HDD has a Snow Leopard 10.6.8 partition, and a Windows XP partition, via Boot Camp. Its Partition Map Scheme, sadly, is a Master Boot Record. I need to reformat it to a GUID Partition Table scheme to install Lion, but when I attempt to boot it from the Snow Leopard 10.6.0 DVD to wipe the drive, it grey-screens. Dead end.
From what I can gather on the forums, I can't boot a 10.6.8 machine using a Snow Leopard 10.6.0 DVD. I can't find my grey DVDs for this machine – still looking for those – but I expect those won't work either, being Leopard-generation?
The machine works fine, for the most part, including the optical drive. Has occassional display and wake glitches. Its HDD is backed up on a Drobo via Time Machine. I also have a 15" MBP Core i7 (with the exact same problem: 10.6.8, XP, MBR) which I can use for Target Disk Mode via FireWire. If I try to wipe the HDD on the 13", using Disk Utility on the 15" via Target Disk Mode, will the 13" then boot successfully from the Snow Leopard 10.6.0 DVD?
I just want to wipe the 13" machine, reinstall a fresh copy of Snow Leopard, then update it to Lion and restore from Time Machine, and never touch anything Windows-related ever again. (And then do the same for my 15", for which I've found my 10.6.3 grey disc. Not sure if that's any more promising.)

Sounds like something is wrong with your disk. Have you tried cleaning it?
The Snow Leopard 10.6.0 DVD is fine – it mounts on both my 13" and 15", and I successfully created an image of it on my 15". I also tried my wife's Snow Leopard 10.6.0 DVD, also clean, which produced the same grey screen result.
Have you tried to use boot camp to erase the Windows partition?
Yep, this is supposed to be the proper way to remove a Windows XP partition from Boot Camp, so this was the first thing I tried. I get the same error as everyone with a Master Boot Record scheme appears to get:

Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.
So, if I can't launch the Disk Utility from the Snow Leopard DVD, my next best guess is wiping it from my 15" over Target Disk Mode. However, if I try that, and still can't get it to boot from the Snow Leopard 10.6.0 DVD, then I'm stuck with an MBP without an OS.
My conclusion – that 10.6.0 DVDs can't boot to 10.6.8 machines – was based on forum posts about downgrading from Lion. I was wondering if there's a way to create a "10.6.8 restore DVD," and try booting from that. Shot in the dark perhaps.

Boot Camp 3.0 and Windows 7 64-bit - My experiences/notes

I just installed Boot Camp 3.0 from the Snow Leopard DVD onto my MacBook Pro 17 (Mid 09) which is running Windows 7 64bit RTM and had Boot Camp 2.1 previously installed on it.
My experiences/notes:
1. The Boot Camp 3.0 installation automatically removed the Boot Camp 2.1 drivers that it was going to update and then installed the newer 3.0 ones
2. You still can only use the GeForce 9600M GT graphics chipset, i.e. only the 9600M GT shows to windows and appears in the device manager
3. Deferred Procedure Calls (DPC) Latency issues still exist although it doesn't seem like you need to run the Bootcamp.exe on CPU 0 affinity only (Bootcamp.exe = the updated/Boot Camp 3.0 version of KbdMgr.exe)
4. You still can't fully dim the keyboard backlight with the F5 key
5. I manually updated the 'important' drivers to the very newest one, i.e.
5a. Latest Nvidia driver for GeForce 9600M GT => 186.81notebook_win7_winvista_64bit_internationalwhql.exe
5b. Latest WLAN chip driver => Broadcom (4322AG chipset) Wireless LAN Driver for Microsoft Windows Vista 5.10.91.8 (14 May 2009) = sp43743.exe
5c. Lateset Realtek High Definition Audio Codec => VistaWin7R231.zip
6. Although I still have bad DPC latency, I haven't yet noticed any audio/video lag/drop-outs/screeches etc.
