Boot Camp control panel does not load: Windows XP via VMWare Fusion

whenever i try to access the boot camp control panel--either via the diamond-shaped boot camp icon running in the task bar, or through the windows control panel itself--i get the following error message related to administrative privileges:
"An error occurred while trying to access the startup disk settings. You may not have privileges to change the startup disk. Make sure you have administrator privileges and try again."
is this because i am running windows as a virtual machine within fusion? obviously i'm not interested in the control panel for its startup options, but rather for its other adjustments such as brightness, trackpad, etc.
i am logged in as administrator--that is the only account i have--and i am running boot camp 2.1 on windows xp sp3.
boring possibly-related background info:
- i installed sp3 before ever putting boot camp on my windows virtual machine. i started, of course, with boot camp 2.0 via the OEM leopard install disk, but even after that installed successfully, i could not access the boot camp control panel. so i plowed forward and installed the 2.1 update, but to no avail.
- i even un-installed sp3 and rolled back to sp2, then removed all traces of boot camp, then re-installed starting from 2.0, but to no avail.
google reveals that a few others have gotten this error message, but i've seen no definitive answer for any of them.

Check your XP Task Manager to see if the processes are running or not. I found that I had issues with my Boot Camp Control Panel if I let it auto-launch. It would hang and not start properly most of the time (but it would sometimes). I removed the process from the auto-start list and put an icon on my desktop to manually start it, and it works right every time now. As for the special keys, etc many of those only work right once the control panel app running.

  • Windows XP Home installs correctly, but Boot Camp control panel will not

I put XP Home onto my 13" MPB and everything works except the Boot Camp control panel and the multitouch and special keys. When I put in the disc it loads and starts to install, as it finishes up and installs the control panel, it shuts down and doesn't install. When it restarts everything except control panel are there. Am I doing something wrong? I have reinstalled twice now with no avail.

  • No 'Keyboard' tab on boot camp control panel - MBP Jun 2009 + Windows 7100

I've been trying for 2 weeks now to get the function keys to work on my MBP (bought Jun 2009) using Windows 7 Build 7100.
This is the 3 ghz MBP with 256gig ssd. Boot camp partitoned fine, windows 7 installed ok, and boot camp ran fine as well. I even downloaded the 2.1 boot camp update and reinstalled the drivers.
The thing is no matter what i do, the keyboard function keys dont work. And i've noticed that the Keyboard tab does not appear on the Boot Camp control panel. The dvd eject button doesnt work either, the sound not working, and also the trackpad is a bit jumpy.
I've researched a lot already for this problem, and it seems people do get Windows 7 to work find on a MBP (even with Vista drivers) so i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong. Any help would be much appreciated.
The machine itself by the way is incredibly quick under Windows 7. Everything is pretty much instant. What a pleasure:)

    I've solved the problem.
The Boot Camp Support Software I orginally ran was downloaded straight from the Apple website so I thought it must be ok, but just to be sure I went back into OS X and downloaded it through the Boot Camp Assistant, switched back to Windows, installed it and everything game out fine! There must have been something Apple put into the software through Boot Camp but not their own site. All the tabs were there, the volume/brightness buttons worked etc.

  • OSX not listed in Vista Boot Camp Control Panel as a Startup Disk

When I go to the Boot Camp Control Panel in Vista, OSX is not listed as a startup disk option, only Windows is. Also if I right click the Boot Camp icon in the tray and choose "Restart in MAC OS X" that does not work.
Vista Ultimate is installed on a separate physical disk on my Mac Pro. In OS X both operating systems show up as target disks. Both show up as an option when I hold the option key when rebooting.
AppleCare had me re-install BootCamp in vista from the OSX cd and then run the Apple Check for Updates program (none found). This had no effect.
So this mainly just an inconvenience. This inconvenience prevents me from using non apple keyboards as they don't have an option key or enable be to program the keyboard to the same. And since I have some minor apple blue tooth keyboard/mouse problems under Vista, I would like to be able to use another keyboard/mouse.

I have the same problem not seeing OS X as a startup or restart option in Boot Camp. I'm using Vista 64 in Boot Camp on a 2008 Mac Pro.

  • Locked out of Windows XP Boot Camp control panel

I'm getting locked out of my Boot Camp control panel under Windows XP with the following message:
"An error occurred while trying to access the startup disk settings.
You may not have privileges to change the startup disk. Make sure you have administrator privileges and try again."
Likewise if I try to restart OS X from the XP icon tray, I get this message:
"Could not locate the Mac OS X boot volume."
However, holding the alt-key at boot up reveals both startup disks. I can boot successfully into OS X and XP using the alt-key, and I can switch startup disks successfully from the OS X System Preferences pane. Also, the Boot Camp partition is visible to Vmware Fusion and can be used to boot into Windows XP successfully. It's only within native Windows XP that the OS X boot volume is not accessible.
I'm running Windows XP Home (SP3) with the latest Boot Camp 2.1 update. Re-running the BCUpdateXP.exe program to repair Boot Camp was unsuccessful. The OS X boot volume still can't be accessed from XP. Any ideas out there?

Same problem, same error message now in October 2008. Running Mac OS X 10.5.5 & Windows XP SP3. Also running MacDrive and Norton Anti-Virus for Windows.
Problem disappears upon reverting to WinXP SP2 using Windows System Restore. Imperfect fix, but it does work. Revert to last restore point when SP2 was working.

  • OS X not showing up in boot camp control panel

Hi, I am using mac book pro with OS X mavericks. Recently I installed windows 8.1 with boot camp assistant. It  was all running fine. I partitioned my windows 8.1 drive to a new volume. When I did this,my OS X disappeared in bootcamp control panel. It not showing up in the list of OS's when we boot the machine. any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you are not seeing the OS X partition while holding down the option/alt key during a restart, it appears your Boot Camp installation damaged the OS X partition, which is probably why it is not showing up in the Boot Camp control panel.
Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then select the Macintosh HD partition and re-install the OS.

  • HT3986 How do I install Boot Camp Control Panel on Windows?

So I recently installed Windows 7 (x64) Ultimate on my MacBook Pro (mid 2012).
There are no drivers, and no Boot Camp Control Panel installed with Windows. How do I install all of this?

In Boot Camp (OSX) download the Windows Support Software, then install it in Windows.

  • Why don't I have Boot Camp Control Panel?

I am currently asking this in Yahoo! Answers as well:
I just used Boot Camp Assistant around a week ago to install Windows 7 Ultimate on my Macbook Pro with Retina Display (and if it also helps find a solution: I'm also using Mountain Lion). At first, certain keyboard functions that can be used in the Mac OS (such as brightness and volume adjustment; oh, + the trackpad functions) that couldn't be used in Windows didn't exactly bother me since I was able to manage without them... until I started to play online games - which is the main reason I had to dual boot my macbook. When I already found it annoying to continuously click control+left click to perform right click, I started to look for solutions, and I noticed that most people online have said, "Oh, simply adjust your settings in the BOOT CAMP CONTROL PANEL. There should be this DIAMOND in your task bar; click on it so that you can apply changes you want. It should be there after you have installed Windows..." ... Well, thing is: in my case, it DOESN'T APPEAR! "Check your control panel," they say. "You will surely find it there." Check for me, if you will, because I seriously have no clue why I can't find it, even after checking using the Search bar...
Now... why don't I have Boot Camp Control Panel? I find it really strange how it doesn't appear in mine when it does in most of other people's... I kinda dislike the idea of reinstalling Windows, because over the week, I've downloaded several drivers and other applications (mostly games). Is there any way I could get it without having to undergo the process of deleting and uninstalling files? I need my Mac OS for school and office work (don't ask) and I need to have my entertaining pastimes using Windows. Please don't hesitate to suggest as many ideas as you can...
    Thank you!

It appears from your description that you did not download and install the Windows support software. It was one of the first menu items you saw when you started Boot Camp Assistant.
Run Boot Camp Assistant again and select the menu option to download the Windows support software. Save this download as described then install it from within Windows.

  • Missing tabs in Boot Camp Control Panel

    Hi all,
I recently just finished an installation of x64 Windows 7 on my Macbook Air. My problem started with me realising I couldn't use the volume/brightness/etc buttons on the keyboard to control those functions, they simply acted as F1, F2, F3 etc. I opened the Boot Camp Control Panel to change this but noticed I only had two tabs, labelled 'Startup Disk' and 'Brightness'. I know for a fact there should be more than two tabs in the Boot Camp Control Panel but I have no idea why they aren't there. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    I've solved the problem.

Third-party NTFS software interferes with the Apple NTFS drivers, which control whether you can see the Bootcamp partition in the Startup Disk option. As a test, can you uninstall all third-party NTFS software and check System Preferences -> Startup Disk?

  • Officejet J3680 Control Panel does not respond to buttons, just make "beep sound"

    Hi everybody, thanks for reading.
The problem is that my (brand new) J3680 control panel does not work until I press all the buttons, yes its weird.
Note #1: The printer works perfect when used through the computer (I am Linux user).
Note #2: Once I have pressed all the buttons at control panel the control panel (kind of) works.
    Heres how this happens:
    I plug the power cord
Now, the printers start and not even the Power button works, so I cant turn it off, each time I press any button it just do a “beep sound” and the LCD screen keeps the same
    The LCD shows this:
    0 Speed Dial
    <One-Touch 1>
Now I have figured out what the LCD screen initialization means:
0: Thats the times I have pressed the “Speed Dial” button
Speed Dial: Thats the button I have to press to make the Control Panel works
<One-Touch 1>: This is the next button I have to press after the “Speed Dial” has been pressed
The printer then makes me press all the buttons (...)
I think this is kind of some “Control Panel button calibration", because the LCD respond perfect when I press the button the printer ask
The other problem is that I don't know how to finish this calibration or whatever this is, because I reach a point where I cant find the button it ask
    The LCD ends showing:
    1 Color Start
    <Hidden 1+Black>
Where “1 Color Start” was the last button it asked me to press, and the <Hidden 1+Black> is the next one combination.
Note that “Hidden 1” is not “1” not “Speed Dial 1”, I have just tried that combinations, but does not work.
Please help I have to do this each time I turn on the printer to make the control panel work. Thanks a lot.

  • My control panel does not have flashlight, calculator or portrait lock

Control panel does not have flashlight, calculator or portrait lock

There is no flashlight since the iPad has no flash with it's camera. There is no calculator icon since the native calculator app available with the iPhone version is not included with the iPad's version of iOS 7. The rotation lock depends on Settings/General/Use side switch to..., setting it to mute audio will put the lock screen button on Control Panel. Setting it to lock screen rotation will change the button in Control Panel to a Mute button.

  • Beware: icloud control panel DOES NOT WORK for icloud email

Opposing evidence is welcome. Please comment.
After dozens of hours, emails and chat sessions with both MS and Apple tech support (the latter escalated as high as it could go - "after this we have to refer you to engineering"), I was finally told by Apple Senior Advisor Ciara Ferguson that icloud control panel does not properly sync icloud mail with Outlook 365 (Outlook 2013).  After several months of working on dual systems I discovered that many (but not all) changes to folder names and filing of emails in various folders made in Outlook were not reflected on icloud and vice versa.   Ms. Ferguson has stated that icloud control panel "works better with calendar and contacts."  Obviously, this non-committal statement is grossly insufficient.  It either works or it doesn't.  It doesn't.
Allegedly, icloud control panel does work to sync other email (the example of an outlook.com email address was given) into apple devices.  This doesn't sound right to me either, since one can just add any POP or IMAP or Exchange account into a Mac device, so why would one need icloud control panel to interface?
I remain stymied as to the actual purpose of icloud control panel, despite asking exactly that question of Ms. Ferguson on several occasions.  The Apple literature and its own setup screens suggest that it will sync email, contacts, calendar and notes with MS Outlook, but as to email, that is apparently untrue.

I don't think so.  I'd like to sync photostream from two iPhones with distinct Apple IDs on our PCs and I don't see a way to do it.  It synced my wife's iPhone while she was logged in to iCloud control panel but not mine until I logged in (and disconnected her photostream PC syncing).

  • Control panel does NOT come up when I swipe up in ios7

the control panel does not come up when I sipe up on the home screen [ or any screen ]

When you start the pre-swipe basically start the swipe with your finger from the lower left-hand corner of the hard case then upwards... not touching the actual screen first (make sure you start the swipe upwards from the actual hard plastic of the case before touching the edge of the screen)
then move your finger upwards onto the screen.  Now I can pretty much do it every single time when starting from the bottom left-hand side. Let me know if this works for everybody else.
Still looking forward to Apple adding a couple of millimeters to the actual swipe area (higher) on the next update, This will make it much easier for everybody with cases to access the control panel. Cheers
