Boot camp - Disc cannot be partitioned....

I am trying to install boot camp but can't seem to get past the screen dealing w/partitions. When on the screen that shows Mac OSX 106 GB 87 GB free, Windows XP 5GB...I chose the 32GB and partition. Then I keep getting the "Disc cannot be partitioned because verification failed. Use Disk Utility to repair this disc. Then, when I go to Disk Utility, it is "greyed out" and I cannot select it. HELP! I need Windows to run a program asap. Thanks!

Ok, I wanted to try out Windows 8 on my Mac, so I got the Parallels 8 bundle pack...but after looking into it...I was led to believe that initially using boot camp and then migrating that to Parallels is a better route. So first question is...Is that true? Should I really start with Boot Camp?. Secondly...(which is what led me to ask if I should really do it this way) I tried to run Boot Camp Assistant and I got "The disk cannot be Partitioned because some files cannot be moved...Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Now some of what I've read is to get a new external HDD, zero it, back up and restore...my question is do I really need to do that with my current set-up? If I already have the external HDD with my time machine back ups on it? I've also read that this may not be necessary...and that it may be possible to restart in recovery mode and "Repair". I apologize for the long winded question...I just want to make sure I give enough info and that someone can help. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

You do not need to use Boot Camp nor install Windows on a Boot Camp partition in order to use Parallels. I think you may have misunderstood. If you already have Windows installed in Boot Camp, then Parallels is able to use that installation for it virtual machine.
On its own Parallels creates its own disc image on which it installs Windows. That disc image functions as a normal Windows hard drive. You can create any number of virtual machines where each one has its own separate disc image.

The above error occurs because you have asked for an amount of space for the Windows partition which cannot be accommodated because Boot Camp Assistant was unable to find sufficient contiguous space to satisfy the request without having to move some files. However, those files could not be moved. The solutions are: 1. reduce the size demanded until Boot Camp is able to accept it; 2. re-partition the drive back to a single volume, reinstall OS X, create the desired Boot Camp partition, then restore all your files.

How to install boot camp on a pre-partitioned HD ?

I have just done a clean install of my mac. Before installation i used disk utility to create a few partitions, one of them made available for Boot Camp.
Now when i start the Boot Camp Assistant it tells me:
"The startup disk can not be partitioned or restored to a single partition.
The startup disk must be formatted as a single mac os extended (journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing windows"
What the h.... do i really have to start over AGAIN?!
I need 3 mac partitions and 1 windows, if i re-install, then use boot camp assistant to create a windows partition i'll be left with just 2 partitions.....
Any help is very welcome at this point.

You don't need to run Boot Camp Assistant since you've already partitioned the drive. Just boot to your Windows disc and follow the installer set up. All Boot Camp Assistant does is partition the drive for you.
However, I'm pretty certain with that many partitions, depending on the order in which you've placed them, you will run into some errors trying to install Windows on the Windows partition you've created. I believe the Windows installer doesn't like to install on anything higher than partition 4. If your Windows partition is #3, and your Mac OS partition is #2, you may still encounter an error, but this has a far easier workaround than having the Windows partition be higher than partition #4.

Boot Camp Is Unable to Partition My Drive

The first time around I managed to set up Boot Camp and Windows 7 Home Basic very successfully and effortlessly on my MBP mid-2012.
Then I found out I could not get activation key for it because Microsoft no longer sold the Basic version. I downloaded the Windows 7 Home Premium version and bought an activation key from Microsoft and am now trying to get it on my computer.
Using Boot Camp Assistant I was able to delete the partition on which old Windows resided. Then using Boot Camp Assistant I built a USB drive that included the new ISO for the Windows 7 Home Premium edition and then the process went well and all necessary support files were downloaded.
We got to the point where I selected the size of the partition and Boot Camp Assistant tried to partition it except that it is not able to. It doesn't giver any reason, it just says: "Your disc could not be partitioned. An error occurred while partitioning the disk."
Anyone here knows what could be the cause of the problem and possibly how I can resolve it?
By the way, I have checked and the base format of the drive is Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and the disk has only one partition.

I am doing a TM backup now. I looked at the iDefrag and the drive definitely needs defragmenting, according to the software, but I thought with Macs we don't need to worry about those things. I want to do one other thing I read somewhere else as a remedy for this inability to partition the drive before taking the leap and doing the full erase and reinstall.

When i try use Boot Camp i get the following message:

You must update your system software before using this setup assistant.
I've installed all the latest updates & it still displays that error??? Can anyone help? I'm sure it used to work.

Confirmed. I was having the same problem, but using SuperDuper to clone the hard disk to an external drive, booting from that drive, reformatting the internal drive using Disk Utility and then finally recloning everything back across to the internal solved the problem. Boot Camp Assistant would then allow me to partition off a chunk for Boot Camp and begin the installation process.
I do tinker more than most people, so it's possible I had screwed up the internal disk structure somehow. My first clue that this was the solution that would work for me was trying to add an extra partition to the internal drive following Dark-Pirata's comment; despite the fact that the disk was formatted as HFS+ Journaled, an error message informed me that I couldn't repartition unless my hard disk was formatted as HFS+ Journaled.

Current issues:

3) Boot Camp Assistant is not working as well with the error in the subject
Any ideas how to fix all of these?

Boot Camp 5 Windows 8 partition

So I haven't dual-booted in a while, I used to run Windows 7 Ultimate. Boot Camp worked fine. I recently have been trying to install Windows 8 Pro and Boot Camp just will not partition my drive. It keeps saying "An error occurred while partitioning the disk". I've tried it both with a bootable 8GB USB plugged in and an install DVD. I'm giving Windows 45GB and that leaves OS X with 101GB. What am I doing wrong? It's a MacBook Pro 13 inch, Early 2011, 500GB HDD, 8GB RAM, etc. etc.

Trying to install boot camp on Leopard - disc cannot be partitioned.......

I have upgraded to Leopard and tried to install bootcamp last night only to get the same message as above.

It goes on to say.....

*I have a few issues:*
1. my volume is already formatted to mac extendable with journal.
2. what software do i use to back up my existing volume?
3. What is the best way to remedy this?

+other major stuff I wanted to keep+ .....
......to my external HDD and selected the option to do a clean installation for Leopard, rather than an upgrade. From reading other posts, bootcamp possibly has a problem installing on a HDD that has been 'used' - IYKWIM
As soon as the new fresh version of Leopard appeared. I installed bootcamp with no problems on my mac.
The only problem I am now facing it that when it boots up to WinXP, I lose connection of my bluetooth mouse/keyboard - due to apple installing the required drivers from the Leopard DVD. I will fix this on Monday when I get a hold of a USB mouse. '-)
The only other major thing to do is print out the bootcamp instructions before you start the process - they help a lot - I needed to refer to them, even though I have installed windows plenty of time through the years.

Boot Camp formatting the windows Partition -XP- I DIDNT! NOW GOT BIG PROBS!

Well Hi everyone, here goes in public! *I didn't read the manual carefully enough*
So, got that out the way, when the XP disc finishes instal and restarts i get the blank dos screen with:
'disk Error, press any key to restart'
but my keyboard has been completely frozen, the only way to restart is a forced restart with the power button.
Even when i try a forced start from the mac os instal DVD, you know- restart - 'D' key all i get is the apple hardware test utility which works only with my mouse and doesn't go any further in helping free my keyboard. although it does say there's no problem with the hardware.
i have important info on my Mac partition and need to recover that.
Is there any way of freeing the keyboard so i can try again?
Any help will be greatly, and humbly, appreciated.
PS. I've already looked at other threads and they all seem to have working keyboards, if i can get mine working i may be able to follow their advice.

I've had to go through this a number of times, and it's just something that you cannot get around.
When you're setting up boot camp, if you choose 32Gb as your Windows partition, it will use the FAT32 format. When you boot from your Windows disk, as you would with a PC that you already know has a disk formatted to FAT32, you would select "Leave file system intact" under the format options. You cannot do this. You HAVE TO select "Format as FAT32".
If you leave the FS intact, it will install part of the OS and reboot, and you'll get this screen. What you would to then is hold the power button down for 10 sec, restart the machine and immediately press and hold the C key. This will tell the machine to boot from the CD, in this case, the Windows install disk. Once you do this, go in and tell the installer to format the drive.
If for whatever reason this doesn't work, boot back into OS X by restarting and holding the "Option/Alt", select Macintosh HD. Once OS X boots, find the boot camp assistant and give the Windows partition back to OS X, and start over.
So long as you DON'T select "Leave file system intact", you will not have to deal with this.

Boot Camp Assistant couldn't partition the drive

I recently deleted my windows partition, and wanted to create a new one, however, boot camp assistant told me that I couldn't (I do not know the exact wording). Boot camp assistant said to save my mac drive as an image, reformat my hard drive, and restore the image using disk utility.
SO, I tried to, but something went wrong, because the disc image I have will not mount....
In disk utility, I created an image of Macintosh HD, but I'm thinking I should have created an image of my hard drive "320.07 GB WDC3200..."
Can anyone confirm this?
Also, if anyone knows how I can view the files in my dmg that I created, that would be great.
The message I get with disk utility is: Unable to attach "Macintosh HD.dmg" (No mountable file systems)
So I click okay, and verify the disk, and I get ALOT of incorrect block counts (should be 1001 instead of 1020220) for example..
After checking multi-linked files and such, disk utility tells me to "repair disk" But I cannot mount the image, therefore I cannot repair it. I tried to repaid the DMG itself, but nothing happens.
Any info would be awesome.

converted corrupt DMG to CDR with disk utility. Some data loss occurred, but I got the majority of my files back.

Boot Camp fails to create partition

I've tried to partition my hard drive (unsuccessfully) several times. Boot Camp keeps failing with a "files cannot be moved" error (which shows up at the very end of a lengthy "partitioning" process). I've tried several partition sizes, ranging from 10 to 40 GB. I followed the suggestion to reinstall OS X (formatted the disk when doing so). I restored my files using Time Machine. Again, same error shows up.
I've tried disk utility's repair and everything is OK. Fsck'ing when booting in single user command line mode agrees that everything in the disk is OK. Not sure what else to try.
I should probably point out that when I had 10.4, I did manage to partition the drive and install Windows XP (that was over a year ago). I later deleted that partition and made a fresh 10.5 install.

Boot Camp Assistant crashes when partitioning drive (exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS)

I run Mountain Lion, a fresh install, brand new Macbook Pro. HD: Samsung 840 Pro 512 GB SSD.
When trying to go through Boot Camp Assistant / Setup it works fine until it wants to repartition my drive. It then quits unexpectedly and returns these errors:
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV) Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x000000000000003c
Everything else on this new machine works like a charm. I checked permissions, verified the disk - no issues whatsoever.
Can anyone help me out with this?

I had the same problem, so I decided the system had too much going on. I stopped Time Machine and unmounted the disc, then I closed every other running program except Boot Camp, disconnected all unnecessary devices, selected the partition size and then didn't touch a thing, just went and made a cup of coffee. When I came back it had started and eventually partitioned fine.

Macpro4,1 boot camp assistant cannot be used

I'm using a macpro4,1 with Mavericks 10.9.1 and boot camp assistant is telling me that it cannot be used. The error reads:
"You must update your computer's Boot ROM firmware before using this setup assistant."
According to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 I am using the latest EFI firmware update, as evidenced by boot ROM version MP41.0081.B08. I tried installing the latest EFI firmare upated offered, version 1.3, but it errors with:
"This compputer does not need this update."
So, I am stuck. EFI says I have the latest, yet BCA says I need an update. It appears I have a later firmware update than is available on http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237. However, BCA does not like this firmware. Does the community have any suggestions to resolve this catch 22?

depends on if it is a standard partition structure or not.
you may need to back/ erase / restore from backup or clone
and free space to create? then it has to be unfragmented (contiguous)

I was trying to install window 7 32-bit in my MacBook Air (2011 Version) by using Boot Camp Assistant.
I had followed all the intruction and downloaded the windows support driver, and when come to the screen of to adjust the partition size, i just only found 2 buttons at the bottom "Go Back" & "Install", but not "Partition"
And i had tried to press the install button (with my window 7 bootable USB drive), it pop up a small windows tells that cant find the installer disc.

When you first open Boot Camp Assistant there is a large button for printing out the documentation. I suggest you do that and read it carefully.
