Boot Camp Hangs, Disk Utility is very slow and gives an error.

Hello,
I would like to install Windows for some games.
But my problem is that when I try to make the boot camp partition it just freezes/hangs 50% in. I have repaired my Disk and it says it is OK.
Got a tip that I could resize my current partition to a smaller size then, make it bigger. This would help bootcamp, but it did not it just hangs around 50% again... I let it say over night, and when I woke up I got a error saying something like
"partition failed at checking archives".
Now I am lost, and do not know what the next step is, this is very annoying and not as easy as I imagned.
Hope you can guide me.

I assume this was the "slow boat to China" syndrome using TimeMachine over USB.
Sorry 'bout that, #1 before beginnng partitioning and the rest was "backup before beginning with Boot Camp Assistant"
Disk Utilty RESTORE is a clone style backup (or there are other programs but not on OS X DVD so you need to boot from something), and of course a different interface (eSATA wold be nice, so would TB or FW800) which should have cut it down to less than a day to backup.
60GB per hour and 500GB?

  • Cannot read partition created by Boot Camp in Disk Utility

Ok, so in trying to get a larger Boot Camp drive, I used disk utility to make a back up og my previous drive onto USB, and then removed the Boot Camp drive from OSX. This afternoon, I tried using Boot Camp Assistant to create a new partition to install windows onto, hoping to restore from the disk image on the USB drive.
HOWEVER, when restarting the computer when Boot Camp Asst. told me to, and it booted to WInXP sp2 disk, I can see 3 partitions on my drive. 1 partition being most of the 160g drive, 2nd partition being 116g of the mac drive, and the 35g of the 3rd partition (what I asked Boot camp to make) However, it doesn't say boot camp partition. I cannot install XP onto any of the partitions I see in the startup disk.
After spending nearly two hours on the phone with a very nice and helpful tech rep from Apple, my cell phone died, leaving us knowing that there is more space reportedly being used on my Mac HD than i have folders using space (only using about 73gigs of space before any of this partition work, now reports using 116 GB). I went back into the XP disk and deleted the 3rd partition, and now there is no gain in space on my Mac HD. We're re-verified and repaired disk permissions, and used the Leopard disk to repair the disk itself. Restored from Time Machine, and still no regained HD space.
Essentially I'm missing 35G of hard drive space now, and I can't install Windows.
I can only see the Mac HD partition on my hard drive. Anyone have a suggestion?!?!

Reinstall Leopard, but first use the Leopard install DVD Disk Utility to reformat the HD to one partition. See:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh14.html
It's for Tiger, but applies for Leopard as well.

  • Boot Camp Assistant & Disk Utility First Aid failing?

    Hi,
I am trying to open my download of 3DS Max for an assignment but the following problems are stopping me:
    1. The message ' The document "Autodesk_3ds_Max_Design_2012_English_Win_32-64bit" could not be opened. The file is too large'
    2. After advice on this forum I tried to create a partition with Boot Camp Assistant (of 32gb). But this failed and told me to repair the disk with Disk Utility.
    3. Disk Utility gives the following messages after I have tried repairing and also verifying the disk
    Would really appreciate some help!
    Thanks

  • Boot Camp Assistant / Disk Utility Stuck during Partitioning

    Hello Apple / Apple customers,
I have a 15" MacBook Pro (Mid-2010) with a 320GB hard drive. I recently partitioned my hard drive to install Windows 7 in order to install and play a Windows game. Everything installed fine, but I discovered that I didn't have enough space partitioned to fit the game (I did not anticipate it taking 14 GB to install). So I deleted the partition. Now I'm attempting to make a larger partition and restore a Winclone image that I made of the previous partition on that new partition. The problem I am receiving occurs when I attempt to make a new partition in both Boot Camp Assistant and Disk Utility. During the partitioning process, Boot Camp Assistant stalls at about 30% and stays that way for hours, and Disk Utility also stalls during the "shrinking disk" part at about 30% as well. Is there anyway that I can fix this? I already tried repairing my hard drive by running Disk Utility via the Installation Disc, and it says that my hard drive is fine. Thanks in advance for the help.

  • My Macbook Pro Retina 2012 is running very slow and gives me frequent speed problems.

So, I've noticed it happen gradually for about a year now. It started with just minor but not significant delays in opening up programs, but I didn't mind it because the computer was still fast compared to a PC, which is what I used to use before this Macbook. I got this macbook in 2012, and luckily I still have a warranty, but it'll close soon.
    Right now, some problems include:
    1)
    2) Shutting down and turning on the computer is slow (sorry no picture on this one). When I first bought this mac, and until about a year ago, whenever I turn it on/off it would do it instantly. But now, there is a bit of a delay when turning off. The screen seems to just freeze at a certain frame, stays that way for a few seconds (longer when turning it off right after playing a game or two-- don't worry they're compatible with Mac OS), and then shuts off. And when it's frozen at that frame time, you can still see the background materials because they're only faded away. You know what I'm talking about-- Macbook turns out when turning off and then shuts down. So, much of the screen is white, but you can still see the screen prior to the shut down faded.
    3) Internet is running extremely slow. When I check my speed at speedtest.net, I get around 47 mbps on bad days and 53-ish on good days (download speed)

Resetting computer to factory conditions doesn't work, time-machine didn't work, and clearing more storage space didn't work either. I would like to get this problem fixed before my warranty runs out. Thanks for reading and any sort of help will be appreciated!

Do you know of any specific tasks or situations that cause it to perform poorly? If so, make a note of those and demonstrate them for Apple. Do NOT, under any circumstances, restart the machine. You want it at its worst when you take it in. If you try to do any of those magic resets, it may just reset things just long enough for Apple to proclaim it healthy. If Apple does that anyway, then there are plenty of opportunities to try those things later after your warranty has expired.
I wish I knew exactly when it does this, but it doesn't always happen. It sometimes does, and sometimes doesn't. I thought about this, too. But the problem is that it's really hard to catch a time or figure out what causes these symptoms to occur. I haven't taken it to Apple because I thought it'll just be a waste of time because they'll probably say that it's healthy so they don't have to put any money/effort to try and fix it...

To get rid of "pop-up ads and other crap on my computer when I am on the internet", click on Safari in the Menu bar, and select Preferences. Next select Extensions. Delete all of them. Restart Safari.
The first step in addressing the black screen is an SMC reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • When I boot my early 2011 macbook pro it is now very slow and pull us the (Command R) window... Pictures Included.

I took my Early 2011 MacBook Pro into the local apple store and they ran their GPU test, and my Mac actually passed it.  The Apple employee then ran a hardware test and the logic board, battery, and optical drive showed problems.  The Genius told me about their flat rate $310 repair deal, and I am going to take advantage of it...
Today when I am able to boot up my mac it loads very slow (showing a beachball during start up) and then the window we get when pressing Command R shows up asking me to press enter for English, and then after that it shows options like Disk Utility, Restore from Time Machine backup, Reinstall OS X, and Get online help options...
I erased my drive (Crucial SSD) and restored from Time Machine backup, and I am still having this issue...  Please help.

Kappy hi, thanks again.  I wiped the drive, reinstalled OS X, and transferred from Time Machine backup...  Seems to be working better somewhat.  I will just have to pay for flat rate repair for Apple to fix everything wrong, and hopefully it will perform like new...  Again thank you.

Does anyone have an idea how I can fix it? I have already downloaded updates, both from Adobe and Windows. I have a new pc with window 8.1.

It could be a coincidence, but I rebooted the machine and (knock on wood) PSE13 seems to be working ok.

Most likely culprit is your Lacie drives which are notorious for flaky power supplies which cause just the sort of erratic behaviour that you describe. Have had similar issues myself. Lacie has been good about replacing my power converter-- twice. If you have seven of them, good luck finding the bad one or more. Like I said, the behaviour is erratic. Sometimes it'll work sometimes not. I can't comment on Samsung drives because I've never used them and have never heard anything about them. Same with Softraid. Why not just use Disk Utility. Sounds like you're ready for an external hardware raid. This will be much faster, much more reliable, and may even be cheaper than seven firewire drives. Check out G Tech, and Maxx Digital for starters.
    Best of luck

Mountain lion download is very slow and in-between it hangs of and starts from beginning. Is there a solution I have already purchased it can I download a torrent and authorize it. Somebody pl. Help

Exactly. Some of us don't understand the situation in India. This is a country with sickest internet speeds. The internet segment is dominated by fraudulant companies. There is no consistency that is why most of the data transfer here is through Pen drives and torrent websites. We have never seen a good downlooad speed here. And on the top of inconsistency lies the Mac book Air without a built in RJ45 port.
If i have to do it in an internet cafe it will cost me more time and money than to purchase a Mac book air itself. Apple should start giving us software loaded flash drives at least at premium.
