Boot Camp Icon Question

I have my Windows/BootCamp Hard Drive partitioned. I would like to change the icon of it when in Mac mode but does not allow me to copy and paste.
What must I do to make this work?

Boot from your Snow Leopard install DVD snd run Disc Utilities to Verify & Repair your drive.  If that doesn't resolve it, make a full backup and then format & restore your backup.
Usually when you get the error message you reported, it means that the drive is fragmented and a critical file can't be moved.  Booting from the Install DVD might be enough to let the Disk Utility fix the drive, but it might require the backup/restore in order to "defrag" the parttion.  I had that happen to me back when I installed Boot Camp under Leopard.

  • Why do i have 2 boot camp icons in the Dock?

Setting up new iMac and when exploring Boot Camp, I see 2 Boot Camp icons in the Dock. When I try to remove one, I see the puff of smoke but then it returns. What did I do wrong? Returning to Mac after years on PC.

Hi Martha, when does it return exactly? Right away or after rebooting?

  • Two Boot camp icons in task bar--fix?

Ever since I updated to Boot Camp 2.02 and then to 2.1, I have 2 separate Boot Camp icons in my task bar (that thingie on the bottom right of your screen) under Vista-64. One of them launches the control panel for BootCamp 2.0, and the other for 2.1 (both work). Does anyone know how to get rid of one of them. Speak slowly for the Windows-illiterate. Thanks.

I had the same problem. This is because you have part of the 32 BIT Boot Camp installation running.
To resolve launch Vista then go to Start> Control panel, switch to the Classic View and double click on Programs and Features. From the list you should see two items named Boot Camp Services. Select the one that is about 6.9 MB in size (the other will be 253MB, do not remove this one!) then press uninstall, confirm the action when prompted then restart when prompted. Once restarted there will only be one Boot Camp icon in Vista.
    Job done!

  • I bought macbook pro at cash america used and loaded with windows 7 ultimate by boot camp.My questions is it has mountain lion loaded but original ower has name with password so how can I reload so I can sign on as administrator for downloads and upgrades

I bought a 13 inch macbook pro9.2 at Cash America with windows 7 Ultimate with boot camp program.
The Mac op sytem has Mountain Lion installed but the previous ower has his name and password attached to it and can only use as guest.
My question is how do I get around this to be administrator to reload software so i can use mountain Lion, and not loose the windows op .

If you reformat the partition that contain Mountain Lion and reinstall Mountain Lion, it should not effect the Windows pratition.
Have said that I suggest you backup everything you might want to save just in case.

  • How do I make a Boot camp icon on my Mac Desktop

When using the Boot Camp partition (i.e. Win 7) there is an Icon on the task bar that lets me switch to Mac OS.  When using OS X, there is no similar Icon.  I have to go to System preferences, select a disk, choose Boot Camp and click OK twice.  I hope that this can be done with just two click, the same as going from Win 7 to OS X.

    Hatter:
Thanks for the quick reply.  Can the Startup disk be placed on the dock?  Recently, I took a cruise, and one of the onboard amenities was a "Computers at Sea" program, which utilized a whole bunch of iMac machines for all classes, Windows as well as Mac.  When I fot home, I decided that my next computer would be an iMac.  As luck would have it, three weeks afteer we got home, the sound card on my PC decided to stop working, so now I have an iMac.
It seemerd to me that when using the iMacs in class, we had only to click once to switch from Win 7 to OS X. and back.   I don't remember how.  I have tried to have a Startup disk on the dock, or on the desk top, but am having no luck.  Was I mistaken, or can I put a Start up disk icon on the Dock?  If so, how do I do it.

  • Boot Camp partition question...

i plan on installing boot camp and using windows only for my XP copy of Adobe CS. so here's my question...
how many GB's do you think is necessary to partition for this operation? i dont want to partition too much, because i know i wont be using XP a lot, but CS files can get big.
also...i have a 40GB external USB hard drive at my expense as well. could i possibly revert XP to that disc instead of partitioning?

  • INSTALLING 10.5 Plus Boot Camp BASIC Questions

I just partitioned a 500GB drive 300/200 with hopes of installing Vista Basic onto the 200GB partition.
All my other hard drives are removed.
I got 10.5 installed and Software Updated on the 300GB volume.
THE PROBLEM IS Boot Camp Assistant is giving the following: "The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows.
    QUESTIONS:
This sounds like my boot drive cannot be partitioned and this is why I have no options in BCA -- true?
I won't be able to install Vista on a second boot-drive partition -- true?

Okay, Erasing my 200GB partition to MS-DOS (fat) let me move another step with Boot Camp Assistant.
Now it appears to take the next step in BCA, I am required to Erase my entire hard drive into one volume/partition, and with that goes my new 10.5 install -- true?
It looks like my options are:
    1) Erase my drive into one volume, and reinstall 10.5, then create a 32MB Vista partition on the boot drive (meaning I have two Operating Systems on the same boot volume (so if one goes bad, I have to Erase both installs from start from scratch)?
    2) Create a 32MB Vista partition on a second internal HD (and mix a boot system with data on the same volume)? This is not good, either.
From here, it looks like either choice is goofy, but I will likely go with putting both OSes on the same boot volume (and eat any time experimenting with this new stuff when one or the other turns bad).

  • Boot Camp virgin question :)

    Hi all,
Sorry for posting a question that is so noobish but I wish to install XP to my Macbook Pro using Boot Camp and I was wondering if the process re-formats the HDD completely or if it creates a partition for XP on-the-fly without touching the existing data on the Mac side of things !
The reason I ask is obvious in that I do not want to lose the contents of my machine in the process !
So, basically, is Boot Camp a tool to add a partition to your HDD without disturbing the contents of what is already there ?
    Thanks in advance.

Open Boot Camp Assistant and save the PDF manual and go through it.
    Backup your system.
Yes, it just 'adds' a partition IF it can find a large enough unfragmented contiguous free space to make the partition.
Otherwise, after your backup, just reformat and restore to regain and unfragment free space.

  • BOOT CAMP VIRUS QUESTION?

Hey guys, quick question. I just got a refurb iMac 27" and finished setting up boot camp and downloaded kapresky anti virus on the windows side, so my question is, when I run a virus scan, will kapresky scan the WHOLE computer or only the windows partition?

Because there's nothing there and because you can't write on the OS X volume in Windows.
Microsoft Security Essentials is a free antivirus that is much better than commercial antiviruses like Kaspersky. I used Microsoft Security Essentials on my old PC and it was the only antivirus that ran correctly, but you can continue using Kaspersky if you want

  • Boot Camp Newbie Question

    Hi all,
I just bought HALO: Combat Evolved for PC last week and loaded it on my Dell. The graphics were really bad due to a weak but operational graphics card.
I got the idea last night to try it through Windows on my iMac. So I loaded Windows via Boot Camp with no problems and went through all the updates that Windows needed. I crossed my fingers and installed HALO and it worked. Then I tried to run the game.
An error window displayed and said "a debugger has been detected, please disable the debugger to continue." I've done some sleuthing and think that it may be related to the video driver. I'm running an ATI Mobility Radeon 2600 XT. Any of you have a suggestion for me or know if I can (and if it would be wise) to change my video driver? Can Windows and OSX run different video drivers (i.e. I change the driver in windows but not OSX)? Thanks!
    Will

So I was able to change my video driver in Windows XP SP2 and that did it! If anyone has this same issue, I followed the directions on this web page:
    http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1017&message=24987376
I found this somewhere else in the Apple discussions.
Note: I haven't had any issues in OSX or Windows since changing the driver.

  • Boot Camp audio question

When I get my MacBook, I want to use the digital audio output for music. I've heard that audio plays through both the internal speakers and the audio output line on MacBook Pros when XP is being used via Boot Camp. Does this hold true with the MacBook?

I'm wondering the same thing...when you plug something into the headphone jack, do the speakers go silent like they're supposed to?

  • Boot Camp Related Question - Somewhat

Hello there. I just made this account forum-usable, so I hope I posted this in the right place.
I just purchased a MacBook, the new aluminum unibody 2.4 Ghz model, and upgraded the memory from 2GB to 4GB. However, I was just wondering about Boot Camp. When my computer arrives (I ordered it online), I plan to install Windows XP, simply so that I can play Windows-based games on it, for they are cheaper and more common. When I do play a game, or any application on Windows XP, would I be correct that the game will use the processors and video card present in the Leopard operating system? For example, I want to play the game Neverwinter Nights 2, and as it requires so much memory, it will recognize my upgraded memory, correct? Please tell me if this is a bit confusing; I apologize in advance if it is.
    Thanks.

Yes. Those are hardware components, not part of an OS.

  • Boot Camp Issue/Question.

I have finally come to terms that I am unable to install Windows 7 on this specific Macbook Pro, CD drive is shot and it does not natively boot USBs. I modded the Info.plist file accordingly and was able to at least make it to a "No bootable device found" screen and that's as far as I got on any of my USB drives. With that being said, would it be possible to swap the hard drives with a similar Macbook Pro (same body style and size, different model year) and set it up on the Macbook Pro that has a working CD drive and is also able to boot from USB? (I previously Boot Camped that computer via USB so I can confirm that it works)

I had the same issue with the XP Service Pack 3 installer reporting I needed an additional 4 MB even though I had plenty of free space. Apparently, the fix for that is to get the Boot Camp 2.1 update for XP. http://support.apple.com/downloads/BootCamp_Update_2_1_for_WindowsXP

  • Multiple Boot Camp Issues & Questions

    Hello,
I installed windows xp on my late 2008 macbook a couple months back. My Mac has 4gb RAM and 250gb HDD. I allotted 80gb to Windows XP, as I use it to run 3D Studio Max as well as Adobe CS4. Ever since the Mac side has been running sluggish (not horrible, just not like before) It's restarts are much longer for example, and it seems the fan is working harder, regardless of it being in Mac OS X or Windows XP.
Now, I know its not the Windows partion size, because i originally had a 32gb partition and it just wasnt big enough, but it actually ran slower then. All I'm wondering is:
-could there be something wrong with my fan?
I downloaded Fan control and on average the left fan says 1600rpm and the right fan says - 1prm(why is hte right so low?)
-is there anything i can do to optimize my mac to perform at its best?
-will bootcamp 3.0 (coming with snow leopard) be able to run 64bit windows vista/7?
Sorry for the long post, but if anybody could answer some or all of my questions, it'd be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Austin

Once you have Windows installed and in use, it behaves no differently than Windows on a PC. In addition, you may run into issues related to Apple-specific hardware.

  • Boot Camp/Reinstall Question

I have a quick question regarding the Mac OS X/Windows XP setup. I have both installed on my computer, but I am having problems with my Mac OS X side, and want to reinstall the OS. Would it affect my Windows side of the hard drive? Or will reinstalling Mac OS X wipe out my whole HD?

If I do an Erase and Install for my Mac OS X will it affect my Windows XP software?? Thats the question I'm having, I did the Archive and Install - didn't fix the issue.
