Boot Camp issues in a new Mac Pro 6 core Westmere

I'm trying to install WinXP SP2 on a drive in bay three of my new Mac Pro (with four internal drives). The boot camp instructions state that a boot camp installation should be done only on a drive in the lowest available numbered bay and that I should remove all the drives in the lower numbered bays in order to do the install. If my OS X system and the boot camp utility are on the hard drive in bay 1 and I'm trying to do an install on a drive in bay 3, this presents a problem. Apple tech support suggested that I swap the drives in bay 1 and 3 prior to the install and then swap them back, which I did. This seemed to work. The startup disk control panel in OS X seems to have no trouble dealing with setting my startup disk to either Mac OS X (in bay 1) or Win XP (in bay 3) after the drives were swapped back. However, I have problems on the windows side. The boot camp control panel in Win XP lets me set Mac OS as the startup disk but I get a permanent black screen at startup requiring me to hold in the power button to shut off the computer and then restart it. Afterwards, I can't start up in OS X unless I hold the option key down at startup and manually pick OS X. I can then reset the startup disk to the OS X in the Mac OS startup disk control panel but this never works from inside XP.
Two questions that I would greatly appreciate answers for:
1. Do you need to install windows on a drive in the lowest available numbered hard drive bay in a Mac Pro?
2. Is the hard drive swap trick I did above confusing the boot camp control panel in XP so that it can't figure how to set Mac OS X (switched back to bay 1) as the startup disk? If the disk swap trick is causing the problem, is there another way to do a boot camp install on a drive that is not in the lowest numbered drive bay?
Thank you very much!
Steve

Support for IE6 is gone. IE9 is coming in beta in Sept. And yes, IE8 can run sites in compatibility mode.
My feeling is those apps that require an old and buggy browser like 6 should be headed for the trash.
XP Mode IS XP in hardware virtualization VM. You may want Windows 7 Pro, for XP Mode but also if you have two physical cpus.
Tech support has been known to give conflicting info on a question, or throw up their hands, and seem really like they need to use Windows first, rather than gain a rep for being clueless and unable to help customers.

  • Has anyone had issues with the new Mac Pro computers and the Adobe Application Manager?

We just purchased a new Mac Pro and transferred everything from the old computer to the new one.  Now we are getting Adobe Application Manager errors and it wants us to download Application Manager.  That leads us to the Adobe Installer that encounters the following issues
Installer failed to initialize.  Please download Adobe Support Advisor to detect the problem.  But that doesn't work either.
    Anyone run into this?

Yep, half of my tracks are coming up displaying an error -69 ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302684 ) and every time I remove a track from the shuffle or update the shuffle, Itunes opens a window displaying the contents of J:\ (obviously the ipod) and hidden folder \iPod_Control.... I'm really irked with this. Been mucking around with the stupid thing for hours now.
Nothing was wrong with it until it suddenly decided to stop working, it wouldn't play tracks and Itunes wouldn't recognise it, hadn't missed a beat up till now. Sifted through the Support site for an answer and getting told I needed to update Itunes and update the Ipod software, ***?? It was working fine before. Me thinks Apple have inserted software in ipod to force users to update to newer version of Itunes. Anyway, ever since updating to the latest Itunes, the Ipod is back in action, but it is trying to tell me that half of my mp3s are corrupt (see error -69), rofl, um no, it's your stupid software Apple, I'm off to by myself a decent MP3 player without the bloat software.

  • Installing XP on Boot Camp help for 1st Generation Mac Pro

    hi all,
i am trying to make my way through the documentation so that i can get WINDOWS XP back on my first generation Mac Pro since i need to run some programs for work. the old drive that i had this information on was running Snow Leopard (I believe) but it has died.
i have a formatted Fat 32 drive in Bay 2 and i am running Lion on my OS drive in Bay 1 and i am hoping someone can point me to the correct URL for doing this.
my understanding is that i need to use Boot Camp 4 but there appears to be a number of different versions of 4 and i am also having a hard time remembering /how/ to do this. i guess i download the Boot Camp 4 version that i need to my OS drive in Bay 1 and i somehow install this on the drive in bay 2? then i insert the XP disk and it automatically installs itself on this drive?
do i have to do something special with drivers?
ALSO, is there anything to be careful about if i have a PARTITION on the drive in Bay 1 that contains a Boot Camp of Windows 7?
    TIA

I would always have a wired connection, even if you generally want/need to use wireless.
I am not up on Airport or how to install.

  • Two Boot Camps installs on the same Mac Pro?

Is it possible to install two Boot Camps on two different internal drives on a Mac Pro? Can I rename the Boot Camps disks to, say, BOOTCAMPXP and BOOTCAMP7? Will this confuse the startup disk system preference in OS X or the Boot Camp control panel in XP and Windows 7?
I would really appreciate any help here.

    Hi,
first: be sure to have/make a backup of what you have now.
second: have a look at the instructions here http://www.harbar.net/articles/mbptb.aspx
The order you need to do the installation/partition is this:
Mac OSX, Win XP (instead of Vista), W7 (instead of Windows 2008 server) (as used in the linked article).
    Good luck

  • How to migrate Boot Camp Vista Partition to new Mac

    Hi there,
I've been working with Vista on my iMac 24" (Core2Duo 2,8GHz 2007) using a Boot Camp partition. I'll be migrating to a 27" Quad-Core iMac soon. Does anybody out there know if there's a smooth and simple way to also migrate the Boot Camp Partition without new installing Vista OS and Windows Apps?
SL 10.6.2 on old and new iMacs. Any info appreciated.

I figured graphics drivers would be an obstacle...just talked to a friend and got some advice:
    1. When display stays black after installation of Windows 7 64 bit (signal is on Mini-Display port)
restart from Windows 7 DVD - open command prompt (shift+F10) and delete all ATI Drivers.
    2. Restart Windows 7 with default graphics drivers. Download ATI Desktop drivers, modify using ATI MobilityModder, install modified drivers.
    It works.
Use of Magic Mouse's multi-touch features in Windows requires Apple's Bluetooth update 1.0 for Windows.

  • Boot Camp on new Mac Pro (Late 2013)

I am stuck with a Boot Camp installation on a new Mac Pro.
I have tried Windows 8.1 Pro, Windows 8.1 Enterprise, and Windows Server 2012 R2. (Can't try Windows 7, obviously.)
All three give me this at the end of setup:
Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed.
I've tried letting the Boot Camp Assistant do everything, I've also followed the advice in several posts that suggest interrupting the process by booting back into Mac and using Disk Utility to format the Boot Camp partition as FAT, ExFAT, etc. All lead to the same error after rebooting to the USB drive and commencing with Windows setup.
Windows finishes the installation, seemingly, but it just doesn't seem to be able to update the boot data.
So, what's the trick? How did other MacPro6,1 users get Boot Camp paved? Is this a firmware update I'm going to need to wait for?
I tried support, it was a joke. Apple couldn't pass me off to Microsoft quick enough; and Microsoft couldn't pass me back to Apple quick enough. I think that's the most I've ever identified with a tennis ball.

What happened to the body of my question? Can everyone else see it, just not me?
Oh wait, I see. This entire site is completely broken in Chrome:

  • New Mac Pro major issue's with Premiere CC 14

I bought the latest Mac Pro with top spec but it runs like a pig with Premiere cc 14, Adobe's video shows the Mac works perfectly. However mine takes forever to render, and has a jerky image on full quality playback with some clips, tried multiple setting, also been on the forum about open cl and open gl and other forums saying it's a mac issue and other saying it's adobe issue
    Has anyone got a solution.
Would Adobe like to comment on the issues with the new Mac Pro's

I add to Jason's response with this: If you are having any suspicious behavior with Premiere Pro CC 2014 running OS X 10.9.4, please update your permissions to Read/Write first. Your permissions may be set to Read Only (this happens when you update, rather than clean install OS X). • New Mac Pro (late 2013)

Having some weird issues with my new Mac Pro which I just received 3 days ago.
To get setup I took my hard drives out of my old Mac Pro, installed them into a Promise Raid. One of the drives was my old startup drive which I had done a clean system install within the last 3 months.
I imported apps, files and settings to get my nMP ready to use quickly.
Using it I have had apps hang at times (Dreamweaver CS6, Transmit 4 to name two) forcing me to restart the computer to get things in order again. Seems to be happening more frequently the longer I use it, had to restart twice today within 8 hours.
I was going to run a disk repair but I don't have a recovery hd to boot into. If I hold command-r during start up I stay at a blank gray screen the whole time. If I hold down the option key I see a recovery HD option but when I try to startup off of it I get the circle with the line through it icon and have to restart again to do anything.
I'm really at a loss here, really didn't expect software issues with this new computer.
Any thoughts on what to look at first?
    System config:
    3.5 6-core
    32gb RAM
    Dual AMD FirePro D300
    10.9.2

No, it shouldn't. If you are having problems with third-party software, I'd suggest reinstalling them from scratch and original media.
As for disk repairs you do it this way:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • Odd Wireless Mighty Mouse  behavior with new Mac Pro?

    Hi,
I have a brand new Mac pro and Wireless Apple Mighty Mouse & Keyboard.
The mouse however is not operating properly, it is jerky and slow to respond on a intermittent regular basis. I can move the cursor around the screen but it will stutter and jerk slowly then pick up ok?
I had the mouse and keyboard with my iMac and it worked fine. I have run all updates and re-installed but to no avail. The keyboard is fine.
I suspect it's a hardware issue with my new mac Pro but i'd love it if someone has any other possible causes.
    Thanks.

Hi, there's a quite a few people with similar problems, including myself.
My keyboard likes to drop it's connection for no apparent reason, which in turn likes to mess up my mouse and cause it to stutter for a while. Pairing up new devices can do this too, I've found.
It's been thought that some Mac Pro's came with their WiFi and BT wires incorrectly fitted, if you have a search you should find a link to the tutorial if you want to try switching them around.
That said, it didn't make any difference to my BT keyboard and wireless Mighty Mouse, so I switched them back.
I've been hoping for a software fix, but no joy so far, glad I got a three year warranty as standard.

  • The new Mac Pro (6,1) and TRIM

With its economical internal design and limited internal expansion options, the new Mac Pro depends heavily on the speed and flexibility of Thunderbolt 2 for expansion. In the old days, we could add four HDs in the internal bays and one more under the optical drive. This also allowed us, if we used SSDs instead of HDs, to enable TRIM for other than Apple drives.
We know that TRIM doesn't work with a USB 3.0 connection. The question is, can TRIM be enabled on an SSD connected in some fashion through Thunderbolt? I know that graphics cards can be plugged into an external PCIe expansion chassis and that eSATA SSDs, such as the OWC Mercury Accelsior_E2, can plug in too. But does having to pass through the Thunderbolt interface interfer with or prevent TRIM support? For that matter, what kind of external connection to an SSD at the other end of the Thunderbolt cable would be able to support TRIM? I'm currently using a CalDigit PCIe card which provides two eSATA external connections, and when a NewerTech Voyager Q is connected and an SSD plugged into it (like putting bread in a toaster), the drive is seen as "Rotational" in System Information, and TRIM cannot be enabled.
Since TRIM support is important for continued performance and longer life of SSDs, is this an issue with the new Mac Pro's design philosophy?

    Hopeful but not comforting.
With Mavericks, not all SSDs will report TRIM support, but doing a benchmark both before and after the change should confirm that TRIM is functional.
I should see TRIM = YES and not from some benchmark.
Thunderbolt support for TRIM is good. But Intel has as yet? never supported TRIM on an array, so not sure how that is accomplished.
"Is" or "may" and "could" - I just  wouldn't make a "TRIM is supported by 10.8.5 and later" as it may vary by Macs that had native SATA III with PCIe support, the new Samsung controller Apple has been using. Certainly not in 5,1 Mac Pro except if and only for an Apple SSD BTO upgrade.

  • AMD Crossfire, Boot Camp, and the new Mac Pro Issue

    Hello, all.
I have a new Mac Pro (Late 2013) with 6 cores, 32 GB RAM, and dual D700 AMD graphics cards.  I'm using an older 30 inch Apple Cinema Display (with the dual link DVI adapter).  I've successfully installed Windows 8.1 under Boot Camp.  Here's my problem...
I understand that for the new Mac Pro under Boot Camp enables AMD CrossfireX by default from multiple sources online.  However, it's disabled on mine, and every time I try to enable it (and hit "Apply" in the AMD Control Center), it disables again.
Is Crossfire only available for use with a Thunderbolt Display attached?  Could that be the problem?  Or is the AMD Control Panel lying to me?
Now, games in Windows are still running well... But I'd like to take full advantage of the dual graphics cards in the new Mac Pro with Crossfire.  Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

    Fixed it!
So, not only would Crossfire not enable under Windows 8.1 on my Mac Pro in Boot Camp... But Windows started crashing massively.  I was about to wipe Boot Camp entirely and try a clean install (even though the only three things I'd installed were Windows itself using Apple's exact instructions, Steam, and Skyrim), but decided in a last ditch effort to try disconnecting and reconnecting peripherals.
Turns out the culprit was my Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock.
Disconnecting the Belkin Thunderbolt dock not only stopped Windows from crashing, but now I can enable Crossfire, as well!
Now, this is especially strange since I have read elsewhere that people have no problems using the Belkin dock under Boot Camp with other Macs... This issue is probably isolated to using it in Boot Camp with the new Mac Pro.  But disconnecting the dock from my Mac Pro has solved not just one but all of my Boot Camp issues.  (Of course, using the Belkin dock under OSX on my Mac Pro is no problem.)
Long story short, if you have a new Mac Pro and plan on using Windows 8.1 under Boot Camp, don't have the Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock attached.
I'm going to contact Belkin and tell them what I've discovered.
    Hope that helps y'all.

  • New Mac Pro 2013 late version USB 3.0 hub issue during boot

Hi all, I just purchased a new Mac Pro 8 core with 32GB of ram and 1 TB drive. When I connect a USB powered 3.0 hub and turn on my Mac Pro, it gets hung on while booting. (Gray screen before the Apple logo appears on boot). If I pull the USB 3.0 hub out, the Mac Pro proceeds to boot normally. Once I am fully booted on my Mac Pro and I plug the USB 3.0 hub back in, everything seems to work fine. I have an enclosure that works off of lightening connector and the enclosure has a USB 3.0 hub onboard. I plug the USB 3.0 hub in that device and every thing seems to boot up fine on the Mac Pro. Any idea why when I plug in the USB 3.0 directly why the Mac Pro ha issues booting up?
    Thanks in Advance.

The Driver for the Hub does not get loaded until late in the Boot-up process.
It is common not to be able to use devices on a Hub during boot-up, as they will not be ready (and therefore not available) until the Login screen appears.
For devices you need during boot-up, attach directly to a built-in USB port on the chassis, not on a display or any other Hub.
If your issue is only that the device interferes with Booting in general, ask the guys at OWC. They select their stocked items for trouble-free, and train their support people to resolve remaining problems quickly. If there is a problem, they will help you get is fixed quickly -- often providing an advanced exchange if that seems appropriate.
