Where does boot camp work on the different types of hard drive on the new imac
Boot Camp installs Windows on a partition of the internal boot drive. If you order a Fusion Drive, which is a combination of a hard drive and an SSD, the partition is on the hard drive.

i'm cross posting this to the iMac forum but I spent hours online with apple tech today and none of the several foks I talked to there had even seen a 5k 27" yet and my call back from Cupertino and engineering is no till tomorrow so I thought I should post here too
MMy bto 5k shipped from China sunday night and arrived in Maine this morning.... Amazing when you think about it for a bto
iinstallation and set up we're going fine and I started up boot camp assistant to create a temp boot camp while I wait for my thunder bay 4 box to take the drives for my old Mac pro when boot camp will have a1 tera SSD all to itself....
so carved off a 700 gig boot camp partition which the assistant formatted fat I then plugged is the lighting to FW adapter in a LaCie 2 tera fw 800 drive to act as a bridge to my LaCie DVD burner which uses the old fw400 cables and inserted my new shrink wrap win 8.1 retail 64 DVD and up comes the win 8 install in very tiny type in a tiny window which got a bit of a laugh out of me.
And I go through it to the point of selecting that boot camp partition and then said it could not use a fat partition and I should reformat it from the win 8.1 installer which I did and then it said it could not use and unknown partition so I said great and booted back to 10-10 and the boot camp tool to put things back and it said it could not I then went to disk tools and it also said the 3tera fusion could not be either reformatted or put back to a single partition I was on with tech support where I went up through 4 levels of support due to the 5k bto which most had no knowledge of. We tried the optioncommand r to get to DT and the same problem as did going to reinstall from the net which after a 30 min down load could not reformat either it is now kicked to Cupertino with a call back tomorrow
( At this point all I want to do is put the computer back in the condition it was in when i started with a plain Yosemite on an unpartitioned 3 tera fusion... Then deal with boot camp when it can have its own drive)
am betting it will take a Unix comand line to reformat but be aware there may be boot camp issues with my configuration
and any help here will be great fully receiveddiskutil list

the 2 are unrelated, you already have boot camp assistant as an application on OSX, if the firmware page doesn't show an updated firmware for your machine then there's no update available

Why Isight is missing?, how to fix boot camp on 2008 iMAC using windows 8.1? can't redownload Lion.
Basically I'm troubleshooting, I have been having problems with my webcam ever since I installed a new hard drive, it seem's to be turned on due to the light above so I'm sure what else to do about it because both Windows/Mac OS aren't picking it up.
At first I thought there be some 'drivers' from the boot camp files that I could manually install, like I did with the other devices but that didn't seem to work for the camera. Also I hear Windows would be fine using either Boot Camp 4,5 to download the appropriate files but each time I try anything I get something about 'unsupported hardware' because before I could install Boot Camp 3 fine but before I was running under 32bit Windows because I hadn't realised at the time that the Mac was using 64bit so it seems like it has something to do with the conversion from 32 to 64 bit but that wouldn't make much sense the Mac OS as far as I'm aware was always 64bit.
And I noticed if I try to be download via the Mac side for the boot camp files then I get 'The Windows support software is not available' but to be fair I have never had any luck in the past with getting those files off the mac side ever.
So in short 2 problems Webcam, Boot Camp need to work but are currently having issues.
Also I can't redownload 'Lion' since it's been saying 'item not available', which is rather frustrating since I originally paid for it, I'm forced to stick to Snow Leopard, I'm baffled to why I can't redownload from my history like I do with Xbox or Steam.Couldn't edit the question so thought add that the Imac camera light is turned on while using Windows, the Mac OS so it should be connected but it isn't.

Windows 7 64 Bit Boot Camp install on iMac 27" (2010) without int. DVD drive
I have a current 27" iMac (bought last year) and the internal DVD drive doesn't work. It's new, has NEVER been used. I guess it's dust inside, but cleaning CDs didn't help. I don't want to bring or send my iMac to the Apple repair service because normally I don't need this internal DVD drive.
Hence I'm looking for alternative ways to install Windows 7/64 via Boot Camp. I have rEFIt-0.14 installed, an Original Windows 7 Retail-DVD (and a ISO image of it), an external USB DVD drive (Samsung), an external USB hard drive 160GB (LaCie), some USB flash drives (Kingston, 4GB) and a Windows PC.
I've read many threads about this problem, for example this:

Hmmm... Some people succeeded in installling - other didn't. I've also read about that "Parallels way" - but I would prefer not to use Parallels.

I've tried it using the Original Windows 7 DVD and also
a bootable 4GB Kingston USB flash drive made
under Windows 7 as follows:
The rEFIt-0.14 boot menu lists the following options...
* Boot Mac OS from Macintosh HD
* Boot EFI\BOOTX64.EFI from EFISECTOR
* Boot Windows from CD
* Boot Legacy OS from EFISECTOR
... but nothing helps - I always get the message
"No bootable device -- insert boot disc and press any key"
and can only switch off my Mac.
What am I doing wrong?
Or will only that Parallels option work? (Last year when
I tried Parallels for the first time, the uninstall function
didn't work comprehensively and I had trouble removing
the Parallels installation completely from my system.)

Can I install boot camp on new startup drive?
I find I have to use Windows to administer a Network Solutions
hosted and built website. They claim to support Mac OS but
there are issues and they tell me that Internet Explorer is the
more reliable browser to use. So I'm wondering if I should
replace my primary drive with a new one and install Boot
Camp. Is this a workable solution? Should I consider one
of the virtualization programs?
TomI would suggest trying a VM first, and I would suggest using VirtualBox (as it is free), it will work but with a slight performance hit. If the hit is more than you can stand go the Boot Camp route.

Driver issue FIXED in Vista / boot camp with new, unibody macbook pro!!
Hay people, I found a fix for the freezing issues with Vista running in Boot camp with the new, unibody Macbook pros. The driver for the 9600M Gt is no good if you install it from the Apple 2.1 version driver disc (Mac osx disc)for some (most) of us.
I needed to go to Nvidia's site and download the one from DECEMBER 08. If you click the "download drivers" tab on the site, scroll past the current driver it wants you to look at (go to the near bottom of page), click the archives, and input your OS version. Also input "Gforce" and "M" series when needed. It will give you a choice of two drivers. DO NOT CHOOSE THE FEB 09 Driver. Thats the BAD driver for most of us. Choose the DECEMBER 08 driver. Download and enjoy. Be sure to roll back the VGA driver (or the current driver) first before you install this. It should work.
I've been through the ringer with this for weeks now and have even tried to take my MBP back to swap for a new one. Apple wont have any of that so I thought I was SOL. Not quite. This DOES work for me with Vista. It also works for Windows & if you have it handy.
By the way, I am posting this for people who HAVE HAD THE FREEZING problems, not for people who haven't. Apparently there are some out there who are running Vista just fine on their unibody MBS's. Most of us are not.

Black screen after installing Boot camp Win7 on iMac 27 late 2009
I've run out of ideas as to how to fix this problem. I have a late 2009 iMac quad i5, Mountain Lion, 12GB RAM, 1TB HD (recently exchanged under extended warranty).
I stopped counting how many times I have tried to get this up and running but I followed a whole bunch of 'how to's' on the net, including the official Appple guide, but I always end up with a black screen. I insytalled it from scratch using both, Apple drivers on CD and SD card and I can confirn that they installed correctly during my last try. That time I first installed Win Vista, then upgraded to Win 7. I took out the install DVD after first restart and left the SD card in its slot (correctly named, as suggested by Apple). the installation finished, the screen went dark for about 5 min, then the computer rebooted, the screen went dark again for another few min and after that the vomputer restarted again but this time all stayed dark and nothing happened for the better part of an hour.
I also restarted from the Win install disk and tried to remove the ATI drivers using command lines, as suggested in one post.
I need to run Win in Bootcamp because some application I use are very demanding so I need Win to run natively. In an earlier attempt I managed to boot Win7 from the Bootcamp partition in Parallels and I installed the Apple Drivers in that environment but it still resulted in a black screen. I also tried to remove the ATI drivers from Drivers directory manually in MacOS mode but the System wouldn't let me edit the Syustem folder at all, not even in Root user mode.
I understand that I'm not the only one with problem and I feel for you, but please refrain from "me too" posts becuase it doesn't really solve my problem. Thank you.I presume that you've followed the instructions for sideloading the iMac Windows drivers into your install via USB stick? (wasn't aware the EFI recognized the SD slot as storage on boot. Now i know)
I always found more success in just slipstreaming the drivers and install.xml file onto a custom Win7 DVD rather than the USB approach when trying with my Late 2009 27" iMac. The Win7 installer needs that enclosed .xml file in the driver package to tell it where to find the drivers so that they be loaded when the Win7 image extracts itself.
If you're using mountain lion, then you should be receiving the proper Win7 driver set. If you wanted to create a custom image, then you can use an ISO file, the driver package and disk utility to make something you can use. Either that or you learn what edits your install.xml file needs to point the installer properly and check it manually.

I'd try a USB stick and the iMac-specific driver set. It should steer your insolent windows installer correctly.

Boot Camp on new Mac Pro (Late 2013)
I am stuck with a Boot Camp installation on a new Mac Pro.
I have tried Windows 8.1 Pro, Windows 8.1 Enterprise, and Windows Server 2012 R2. (Can't try Windows 7, obviously.)
All three give me this at the end of setup:
Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed.
I've tried letting the Boot Camp Assistant do everything, I've also followed the advice in several posts that suggest interrupting the process by booting back into Mac and using Disk Utility to format the Boot Camp partition as FAT, ExFAT, etc. All lead to the same error after rebooting to the USB drive and commencing with Windows setup.
Windows finishes the installation, seemingly, but it just doesn't seem to be able to update the boot data.
So, what's the trick? How did other MacPro6,1 users get Boot Camp paved? Is this a firmware update I'm going to need to wait for?
I tried support, it was a joke. Apple couldn't pass me off to Microsoft quick enough; and Microsoft couldn't pass me back to Apple quick enough. I think that's the most I've ever identified with a tennis ball.What happened to the body of my question? Can everyone else see it, just not me?

Older iMac hard drive in enclosure won't boot long to new iMac?
I have just received my new iMac i7 with the THIN case.....it is pretty awesome! I removed the hard drive from my previous iMac (2006 Intel core 2 duo) and put it into an enclosure hoping to retreive my old files. Here is the problem.....the old hard drive (250GB) will not stay booted long enough to transfer my files. The enclosure is a Sabrent 3.5" SATA hard drive USB 3.0 enclosure. It will appear for approx. 20-30 seconds, and then the message:
"The disk was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off. To eject a disk, select it in the Finder and choose File > Eject. The next time you connect the disk, Mac OS X will attempt to repair any damage to the information on the disk."
It will disappear from the desktop and I am unable to access it any longer. I am able to open the older hard drive and can open older folders, etc. while it is mounted on the desktop.
A little background on the older iMac.....it quit working completely, would not turn on, no fan noise, no hard drive spinning, NOTHING. I ordered a replacement power supply and installed it......but still nothing. I can only assume the logic board is dead. Since it was what the genious at the Apple store called "vintage", we deicided to upgrade, hence the new iMac. (And it was 7 years old after all!!)
What can I do to get the info I need from the older hard drive? Like I said, it's 7 years old and has a LOT of info. I WAS able to backup pictures, music, and some misc. work to an external hard drive before it died....but I need the "little" things like my address book, calendar, old emails, bookmarks, etc.
Thanks in advance for any help in this matter!If this is an enclosure that is USB powered that may be the problem. Mac are notorious for not putting out enough power from the USB port to properly power these USB powered drives. I suggest you get a SATA to USB Adapter that has it own AC power supply to power the drive.

Just got my new dual 3.2 and want to run windows. I have always run Parallels on my MB Pro and it works fairly well. I know want to run Boot Camp on the Mac Pro so that I can take advantage of all the hardware resources (dual 3.2, 8gb ram, dual drives) My main questions are:
A) Which version of Windows do I need to install to use both processors. Is it true that XP home does not recognize both?
B) Am I able to install Windows under Boot Camp on my second drive?

If you manage to install Vista on a second drive using Boot Camp PLEASE post back and let me know if you are successful. I have been trying for two days now with no luck.
The first time I ran Boot Camp assistant and asked it to prepare the disk with a Windows partition Disk Utilities it tells me:
80GB WD ETC ETC (partition 1) is formatted with GUID partition table 74.5MB capacity
Disk 1s2 (partition 2) is formatted for FAT32 74.3 GB

I install the Vista 32 bit Business version DVD (by the way Business and Ultimate are the only versions that support dual CPUS) and run Boot Camp and tell it to install Windows.
The computer restarts and Windows files are copied and the install screen comes up and I insert the CDKey
When the screen comes up where you tell which location to install on, I have these options:
Disk 0 (my Mac OS)
Disk 1 Partition 1 89.9MB
Disk 1 Partition 2 74.3GB
I try to install on Partition 2 but get a message that says:
"Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for install".
I formatted the partition and booted back to Leopard where it now says that partition 2 is NTFS - good.
However back in the Windows installer it still says "Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for install".
I've re-tried this about a dozen time to no avail.
BTW Microsoft web site says that this is a known problem with Vista which wants to go on the primary drive. Their workaround says to remove the primary drive and install. I tried this and it doesn't work.

I have a problem with Windows activation.
My configuration:
iMac 27.4 GB Memory, dual processor, OS X Snow leopard, Windows 7 in a Boot Camp partition
I use Windows 7 in 2 ways:
by starting the machine in the Boot Camp partition (with 4 GB memory)
by opening a session VMWARE Fusion under Mac OS X (with 1 GB memory)
No problem (except: very slow with starting and black screen - problem discussed in the same forum)
My problem: how to activate Windows?
I activated Windows after starting via Boot Camp: no problem
But when I use Windows via VMWARE Fusion, I receive a message “you must activate this version of Windows 7 - there remain xx days” I understand that the hardware configuration is not the same one, but I use Windows 7 out of only one machine (but with 2 different hardware configuration), therefore nothing illegal.
How can I solve this problem?
Has somebody the same problem ?

You need to activate Windows 7 in BootCamp and in Fusion. Microsoft allows multiple free activations. If these are the only two activations for your copy of Windows, just follow the online activation process. It is quick and simple. If this process fails for some reason, call the automatic activation line. You'll be stepped through the activation by an automated attendant (robot). In the very unlikely event that the automated call activation fails, call and talk to a Microsoft activation person who will help you out. -
Moving boot camp to new machine with Parallels 10 or WinClone?
i seem to have a ton of document here but have not been able to figure a way out of my dilemma.
i have a 2006 mac pro that had two boot camp installs with one of windows 7 and one of XP. each of these are still intact on my hard drives in this computer. however, i can not see this computer on my display as there appears to be some issue with the converter that i am using for my cinema display mini display port (to get it to DVI display port on the 2006) so i cannot really DO anything with these installations other than see them when i put the disk in my new 2012.
Parallels 10 appears to have a new "boot camp" mode and i am trying to figure out if there is a way to get the boot camp installs into my 2012 as "virtual boot camp" installations. i just put one of the 2006 disks into the 2012 machine and tried this and Parallels seems to have accepted this but i am not sure if i somehow need to leave the physical boot camp install in this bay 4 or if i can just pull the disk and now i have a "virtual boot camp" install of windows 7.
ALSO, i DO have WinClone backups of both of these boot camp installations on the new machine but i believe i am supposed to run CHKDSK and Sysprep on the actual boot camp installs before trying to migrate them over to the new machine and since i cannot see anything in the old machine i can't try this. actually, i did try it back when i could see the 2006 but there was some error with the Sysprep and the thread proposing solutions was like 26 pages long.
anyway, anyone done this and have any suggestions?

When you installed XP or W7, you would have used either an Install DVD or a USB, or both. This is what you would need. You can recreate the USB using Bootcamp Assistant, if necessary. The only caveat would be if you subsequently upgraded to later Service Packs, and the installer was built earlier than that.

It is possible that Windows may not boot at all, due to hardware changes and driver differences. Safe Mode is a minimal driver load boot. It should be bootable. If you end with a completely un-bootable system after you move disks, then Windows Startup Repair may be necessary first. You may also need to run chkdsk. I would also recommend uninstalling any third-party NTFS software. Once Windows is fully installed, there is no interaction with Yosemite, and a minimal interaction with firmware and Apple Bootmanager which recognizes a NTFS system.
C. can you help me with the terminology here? you ask if any of my "W7/WXP" disks have a version of OS X co-resident". at one point i had what i understood to be JUST an XP install on my 2006 machine on a hard drive which i still have. i don't know if this was installed "under" some OS but as far as i know i /just/ had a boot camp installation of XP on this disk. is this possible? if so, what do i call it? ALSO, i /now/ have basically two disks with one containing a PARTITION of Snow Leopord or Mountain Lion and a PARTITION of Windows XP Boot Camp. then the /second/ disk contains a CLONE of the OS X install and a PARTITION of Windows 7 Boot Camp. Do you know what i call these?! are either of them what you consider "co-resident"? i guess i don't exactly understand the types of boot camps i can have (ignoring virtual machines).
If the disk was formatted as an MBR disk and was fully dedicated to Windows, it will not have OS X. In some cases, a single physical disk can be partitioned to host both OSes. If the OS X part was on a separate physical disk, this is what is usually is done on a MacPro with multiple disks.
D. can i /PLEASE/ ask you to help me understand the types of virtual machines i can create on the 2012 with Parallels 10? right now i just hooked up a Windows 7 virtual machine from Parallels 7. so this is a "true virtual machine". but i can somehow also now create a "boot camp virtual machine" where i can EITHER boot into the boot camp or into the virtual machine? i mean, i guess what we are discussing is a way to CLEAN the Windows 7 BOOT CAMP INSTALLATION on my 2006 by putting the hard drive into the 2012 and to then - well i guess i then create a WinClone of the Boot Camp install and i run the WinClone MIGRATION procedure to get this boot camp on the 2012? /then/ i run parallels and hook up this Boot Camp install in the new machine?
Usually, BC installations can be imported as virtual machines. You can also install a VM using a virtual disk, which, to OS X, appears like a set of system files. You can as a test import the 2006 disk clone as a VM and test. The VM engines impose their own BIOS engine and can have their own drivers in such a VM. For example, they will emulate SCSI to access the underlying virtual or physical disk. They may also provide their own file system drivers. For example, VMware Fusion can provide HGFS to share files between OS X and Windows. Your approach should work, but I have never tested Winclone with the VM layer in the middle. You should ask Wincloen support if they support VM as an in-between layer or not. I do not think so.
E. can you remind me why i can't get a XP Boot Camp on the 2012 machine? was this due to the 2012 mac pro or was it yosemite or both i guess? i mean, for XP i am presumably going to run the TRANSFER procedure on the XP install /after/ putting the hard drive with XP boot camp from the 2006 into my 2012 and then i am going to run this VIRTUAL MACHINE FROM BOOT CAMP operation (link below)? if so, we are saying i can run this from the 2012 and then can i remove the XP Boot Camp drive from the 2012 and still have the virtual machine i guess? in this case i SHOULD ALSO run the XP through the procedure you explain? so in this case i will only have a virtualized XP Boot Camp install and with Windows 7 i will have both the BOOT CAMP install (which i presumably migrated to my OS X hard drive!) and i will be able to virtually boot to this boot camp install using Parallels 10?
Apple deprecated XP support as they moved to BC version 5.x. A new XP installation is not possible, but an existing XP installation will continue to work across OS X version upgrades. This is a 'physical' machine from 2006 MP. Once you install BC drivers on the XP installation to work with 2012, you will need to reverse the migration procedure (uninstall drivers for 2012MP, install 2006 MP drivers). It is a very unusual direction to want to go back to 2006 MP, but it is still a method if the 2012 MP hardware failed, and you wanted to go back to a working 2006 MP. You should check if Parallels 10 supports XP.
F. i guess if i want to make sure to retain a true boot camp install of the Windows XP install i have to repair the 2006 machine is that right?

Not necessarily. If you can migrate (simulating a SysPrep) to the 2012 MP machine, you do not need to resurrect the 2006 MP. -
"No Boot Disk" on new iMac with external optical drive
So I am experiencing a problem similar to what some people have had, but I have the brand new iMac which does not come with a cd drive.
I have a fusion drive in the iMac.
I downloaded Windows 7 Ultimate from my University software store, which gave me a .img file. I burned this file to disk in order to make the boot drive.
I am using an amazon basics DVD optical drive which connects to my computer via USB.
Upon boot into windows, it does not recognize the dvd in the drive as bootable, and says "No Bootable Disk Found, Press Any Key". Of course, I have a bluetooth keyboard and cannot press any key because there are currently no drivers.
So, any ideas on why it won't recognize my boot dvd?It was just a simple case of removing the verbose boot settings which I found a script for after searching on Google.
