Boot camp outside mac

Hi,
Does anyone know if bootcamp can create a partition on an external hard drive so i don't need to sacrifice any mac space? Also i have a new macbook which has no sign of boot camp in utilities folder, what is the best route to get it? a down load or leopard installation disc?

Some DVDs didn't come with BootCamp Assistant, mostly early on Leopard Upgrade DVDs. Take a look for Pacifist on wwww.macupdate.com which can examine installer packages and let you do an extrat-install of just BC if it is there probably.
Mac OS can boot from external or keep your entire home account on 2nd drive. You really can't install and run Windows from an external USB/FW or even eSATA drive - unless you are using a workstation with PCI controller and a RAID controller, which will.
A Mac Pro supports 4 internal drives, lots of disk space. You could pull your internal drive, put it in an external case for backups etc and install a larger hard drive. But Windows should be able to live with 20-40GB (XP vs Vista) and still leave 'enough' for OS X. And use an external drive for your media libraries if needed.

  • Is Apple boot camp on Mac OS 10.7 lion ready to support Windows 8 after it is set to release in 2012?

    Hello!
Is Apple boot camp on Mac OS 10.7 lion ready to support Windows 8 after it is set to release in 2012?
    Thanks!

I think you'll have to wait until one or both of those OS's are actually released to be able to know the answer to this question. Apple put out special Boot Camp updates for Windows7 when it came out. Past performance shows that Apple is on the ball, but nothing is locked in stone at this time.
The only people who could really know the answer to what the beta's are planning are the same people who have signed Non Disclosure Agreements and couldn't say anything here anyway. The rest of us volunteers are not allowed to speculate too much about Apple's plans or design decisions that they have not announced.

Reboot your Mac, as soon as you hear the chime press the option/alt key and hold it until the boot manager appears, select OSX to boot from.

  • How to fix time changing in boot camp to mac osx

After I installed Windows 7 Ultimate with boot camp on my 2011 Macbook Pro I installed the drivers from the disc and installed all the updates from software update in windows 7.
Whenever I restart into Mac OSX 10.6.8 it will change the date to the next day (or about 11 hours) and even if the automatic time set from the internet is selected it will still say this is the correct time
So i change it manually and keep it this way. But then again whenever I restart into W7 it will change back to a different time
I have had a look at this forum but with the last suggestion on the page but there was no file specified to delete

Thanks and I hope i can get this fixed in a couple of days!
I might have to go into the apple genius bar if i cannot get it fixed online

As you've learned the hard way, if you were expecting an instant answer to a problem or technical question, you won't often find it here unless many other people are encountering the issue at the same moment on the same day. If no-one currently online when you post your message has encountered your specific issue or problem and been able to remedy it, you're unlikely to get an immediate response.
In the less-active areas of these forums, questions often linger 24 hours or more before receiving a response, and many questions go unanswered far longer. That is because these are free user-to-user forums, not a paid tech support help line.
And yet, some wonderful people spend an extraordinary amount of time here being helpful: Take a look at the list of Top Participants in any Community. It is based upon reputation points. It takes decades of determined effort to achieve a 'Level 10' status!
I've been a casual user here for almost four years, and I'm barely a 'Level 3' which begins at 500 reputation points, equating to as few as 50 'correct' or as many as 100 'helpful' answers, so take any advice I've posted within these forums at your own risk.
Not being one to assume that any totally frustrated user actually searches far and wide within or outside these forums for answers, or even understands how to use the forum search feature before getting frustrated, I'll offer some links that could still be helpful...
The Boot Camp time sync issue goes back to at least 2007-2008, which predates both OS X 10.6 and Windows 7.  A popular search engine will provide quite a number of off-forum links that may or may not be helpful.
This old link within Apple Support Communities provides a couple of off-site Microsoft links to instructions for setting the system clock and synchronizing with an internet time server.  It does not specifically address OS X 10.6 and Windows 7, but OS X 10.5, Windows XP and Windows Vista: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1285
Note that you must have an active internet connection for time-sync to work properly.
Have you set up your network connection(s) on the Windows 7 side?
Which time zone have you selected on the Windows side?
Which internet time server(s) are you using on OS X and in Windows?
This off-site post suggests using regedit in Windows to disable the Apple Time Service in Windows.

  • Dual monitor not working under Boot Camp on Mac Pro ATI HD 2600 XT

Recently got a brand new Mac Pro with ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics card.
On the Mac side (Leopard), everything works perfectly: my second monitor (a plasma screen connected with HDMI to the second DVI of the ATI card via HDMI/DVI adapter) is fully recognized and it works as an extended desktop or in Mirroring mode.
Under Boot Camp (Windows XP Pro) however, NOTHING: the second monitor always appears in the display properties, but it is grayed out (inactive), and when I try to activate it, it switches back to being grayed out immediately and nothing gets displayed on it.
After reading all the posts I can find on the topic, I tried the following (in pretty much every possible combination - Thank god for WinClone that allows me to restore the Boot Camp basic install image without having to reinstall Windows from scratch every time):
    a) Bootcamp 2.0 (installed by default by Bootcamp assistant)
    b) Update to Bootcamp 2.1
    1) Windows XP Pro SP2c vanilla install (from my Windows XP pro install disk)
    2) Update to Windows XP SP3 (I tried with and without BC 2.1: both worked -> BC 2.1 didn't seem to be required for SP3 - maybe because this is a mac pro and not a MB or MBP)
    i) ATI drivers installed by default by Boot Camp assistant (BC 2.0) or by BC 2.1
ii) Latest ATI drivers found on ATI web site specifically under Boot Camp / Mac Pro.
Note: Interestingly, the catalyst installer worked ok (provided .NET framework 2.0 is installed though), but it seems that the Radeon BootCamp/Mac Pro driver set itself from ATI's web site does NOT include a driver for the HD 2600 XT - so when I install this driver set, it tells me that no compatible hardware was found...
iii) Latest ATI drivers found under Windows XP (these did include one driver specifically for the Radeon HD 2600 XT)
NOTHING seems to work. I read posts (most of the from late last year) about ATI Catalyst utility showing a 3rd monitor at some point, but I never got any 3rd monitor showing in any of my many many trials with Catalyst. I have yet to get a single image appear on my plasma under Bootcamp Windows. I don't believe its the hardware because everything works great on the max OS X side.
I am actually considering switching to an NVidia 8800 GT just to get the dual screen to work under BootCamp/Windows XP because I really need it and I read everywhere that drivers for NVidia are far better than ATI ones.
Any advice? What should I try next before getting an 8800 ?
Is there a diagnostic utility that I can use to test my config including the GC?
    Thanks!

Hi there aside from my laptop I have an iMac 20" with the same HD 2600 XT card. I recently installed the Catalyst 8.6 driver by using a driver mod from driverheaven, I use Vista 32. By installing it this way I got boosted performance and many issues with the bootcamp drivers were fixed. As you may already know the ATI drivers do not install on bootcamped macs usually but the mod tool fixes this. Its unofficial so do so at your own risk but try it out and see if you get the second monitor if not just rollback. Hope this helps and I didn't want to say too much about the 8.6 driver mod because it may not be allowed here but google will provide any answers.

  • Installing Windows 7 With Boot Camp on Mac Pro 3.1 w/GTX285 Video card

I have an Early 2008 Mac Pro 3.1 running the latest version of OS 10.6 with all updates.  I have an nVidia GTX285 card installed in the Mac Pro that has been working fine for at least six months under OS 10.6 with Mac drivers downloaded from the nVidia web site and installed under OS 10.6.  I replaced the ATi 2600XT video card with the nVidia GTX285 in order to have CUDA support in Premier Pro CS 5 and it works beautifully.
I now wish to install Windows 7 Professional 64 bit on this Mac Pro.  I have never had any version of Windows installed on this Mac Pro.  I am using Boot Camp assistant and a new full version of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.
My question is do I need to remove the GTX 285 graphics card and replace it with my AT 2600XT before installing Windows 7?  This would be a real pain to do because the two connectors to the motherboard are hard to get to.  However, since Apple never used the GTX285 in any of its computers, I am worried that I will not have any video display when I go to try and install Windows 7 with Boot Cam assistant.
Please advise me whether removing the graphics card is necessary before installing Windows 7 with Boot Camp.
Thank you in advance for responding.
    Tom

NO.... he has a workstation, and not MBP, nor are "drivers already loaded."
    How I would proceed -
Install Windows on its own drive.
    Pull all the other drives.
Boot from Windows 7 Pro DVD
Forget Boot Camp Assistant, it doesn't do anything - unless you really want to install Windows on the SAME drive as Mac OS - not ideal and not what most of Mac Pro owners do.
Just insert your OS X DVD once Windows is up to date - helps to buy the SP1 OEM version $129.
Run Apple SETUP.exe (Boot Camp 3.0.x drivers) and update with ASU or manually to 3.2.
No you don't need to go back and use that ATI. And you dont' want to be in the situation of changing from ATI to Nvidia and all the hassle that adds. you are fine.
The Mac Pro is as close as anything to a standard Wintel workstation.
Add MS Security Essentials or KIS or whatever you favor. KIS2011 or NIS2011 are good, MSSE 2.0 is free and based on their enterprise product.

  • Boot Camp w Mac OS X Lion

I am new to using Macs -- just purchased a new iMac with OS X Lion pre-installed. I would like to use boot camp to dual boot to windows. Can someone point me to where I can get instructions for how to do this with the new Lion OS? Also, I purchased my iMac with the 256SSD + 2TB HDD. I partitioned my 2TB HDD so that half is for Mac and half is for Windows. But I'm not sure if I should partition my SSD drive also. My understanding is that the OS will run a lot faster on the SSD. Should I partition my SSD in half as well to serve as the boot drive for both Mac and Windows?

Mac Minis with 4 USB ports in back (not 2 USB ports found on older PowerPC Mac Minis).

I can install WIndows 7 but have the following problems.. they have appeared and got worse with use which is hard to grasp.
    (1) Mouse/trackpad on MacBook Pro is almost unusable, inconsistent, erratic, non-responsive, etc
    (2) Attaching Firewire 800 external drives to iMac causes system crash (blue panel)
Does anyone have similar experience and/or have any suggestions as to how to resolve these issues?
Is there any way to run the trackpad as a basic mouse with drivers working properly until Apple comes out with working drivers for their "proprietary" trackpad?
Does anyone know where to find updated versions for Firewire 800 drivers that are compatible with Windows 7? The latest drivers from Microsoft will not install where it says the existing drivers are the current ones.
By the way, this was an "upgrade" installation from Vista where Vista had been working well. The initial attempt at installation failed badly destroying the OS X partition which had to be repaired and restored. I know this is supposedly impossible but it happened. I suspect this is because MacDrive 8 was installed and I have some folders at the root level on the OS X partition with the same names that WIndows uses. The Windows 7 installation failed late in the process indicating it could no longer write to the F: drive, where OS X was installed. I recommend doing the upgrade installation where there is no possible access from Windows through to the Mac OS X drive.

  • Boot Camp on Mac Pro

    Hello,
I hope I'm in the right place for this question. If not maybe someone could direct me where to go. When I installed Boot Camp 1.1 on the Mac Pro, I was prompted for either a quick format in NTFS or long format for NTFS. I wasn't prompted for FAT as indicated by the instructions. Since there wasn't FAT to format the drive I used NTFS File system.
I was able to load Windows XP Pro, Install MS Word, Word Perfect and GroupWise. Now according to the Boot Camp instructions it indicated that when formating in NTFS that you won't be able to save files. Does that mean I won't be able to save word files in Windows?
    Can someone let me know.
    Thank you
    Phil

NTFS is a newer, more efficient, disk format that Microsoft is now pushing people to use. Basically, when it comes to Mac users though the choice really comes down to this…
Do you want to be able to write to your Windows partition from Mac OS X?
If you do then FAT32 will allow you to do this where NTFS will be read-only. The problem with FAT32 however is that Microsoft will not allow you to have a FAT32 partition that is larger than 32GB under Windows (this is how they're pushing people to use NTFS as this is not the real size ceiling for FAT32). So if you want more than 32GB then you're pretty much stuck with NTFS.

  • HT3986 why can't my boot camp in mac system detect the win7 system i've installed

I try to use parallel in my macbook pro, but it can't show me the boot camp option that i used to intall win7.
when i click my boot camp assistance in mac system, it shows me only to continue to install windows. is it supposed to be like this?

Unclear what you did and askng your system to do.
Can you boot Windows natively now?
If you want to dual boot Windows and Mac, you use Boot Camp.
If you want to do all that, AND you also want to use your Windows as a guest OS under Mac using parallels you setup parallels after Windows was installed and functioning and fully updated first.
And Parallels has their How To, FAQ and support forum.
