Boot camp partition on my internal Drive

I Have a imac early 2008 and i partitioned part of my internal Hard drive as a partition for time machine. but now i can not get rid of that time machine partition. I have already erased the partition but it will not let me delete the boot camp partition. even after reformating the hard drive. i can eject it but every time i restart it shows back up under my HD icon.
So my question is how do i get rid of that partition and return my HD back to normal.

Use /Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant to remove the boot camp partition.

  • How can I get my Boot Camp partition off my old drive?

    I swapped out the stock 160gb drive that came in my MacBook Pro since it was acting up. I installed a new drive and restored it with Time Machine, but now my Boot Camp partition is still on my old drive. I slipped my old drive into a usb sata enclosure and tried booting from it in hope I could back it up with Winclone. When I went into the startup disk selector the drive would not show up (but it sounded like it was trying to spin up). Earlier when I pulled the drive out of my MacBook Pro it was still functioning fine, so I do not think the drive has failed.
    Any ideas on how I can get the Boot Camp partition off the old drive? Thanks for your help.

    Some drives require more current to spin-up from a "cold start" than most USB ports put out, even if the port supplies. Additionally, if the drive is failing, it may require even more power for the startup.
    I have a couple USB enclosures with external AC power that I keep around in case I run into drives like this. Failing that, I also have a couple of USB cables which use 2 ports to provide additional current. Also the cable length, and gauge makes a difference.

  • How do I back up my Boot Camp partition to external firewire drive?

    I have a 15 GB Windows XP Boot Camp partition (FAT32). I want to back it up to a 120 GB external Firewire drive. (I know the backup won't be bootable). In OX X Disk Utility, I formatted the external drive as MS-DOS (FAT). I planned to do the backup using the Windows Backup utility.
    However, when booted into WinXP, Windows will not recognize the external hard drive. I thought I might need to create a FAT32 partion of 32 GB or less on the external drive, but I apparently can't do this in OS X or Windows (since Windows doesn't recognize the drive).
    Any suggestions on how to backup the Boot Camp partition will be appreciated. I'm mainly interested in preserving all programs and data. Ideally, a clone could be created that could be restored back to the original partition in bootable form, but from studying this and other forums, it dosn't seem to be easy to do this for a FAT32-formatted volume.

    My goal was to create a bootable clone of my FAT32 Boot Camp partition, while at the same time increasing the size of the partition from 15 GB to 32 GB if possible. This is what I did:
    1. As suggested in this thread, I used Disk Utility to create a disk image. I formatted it as MS-DOS (FAT), and made it 32 GB in size.
    2. Used the Finder to copy all files from my 15 GB Windows XP partition to the new disk image.
    The following steps were only to determine if the disk image is a viable backup:
    3. Removed the internal hard drive with my original Win XP partition, and installed a new internal hard drive.
    4. Used Boot Camp Assistant to create a 32 GB Boot Camp partition on the new internal drive.
    5. Inserted my Win XP installation disk and started the Windows installation. Formatted the new partition as FAT32. (I used the long rather than the quick format method--not sure if this was necessary.)
    6. Continued the Windows installation to the point of restarting the computer, at which time I used the Option key to boot back into OS X.
    7. Used the Finder to copy all the files from the 32 GB disk image to the new Boot Camp partition. (This overwrote a few Windows files installed by the aborted Win XP installation.)
    8. Restarted and used the Option key to select the new 32 GB Boot Camp Partition. Windows booted as usual with all files, programs, etc. from the original 15 GB partition. Windows did complain about "new hardware" and required a restart, but all appears normal.
    This indicates that the disk image containing all the files from my original Boot Camp partition is a viable backup, and can be used to restore the partition if necessary. I'm not sure if formatting the disk image as MS-DOS (rather than Mac OS extended) was necessary, or not.

    My 2011 MBP crashed for the 4th time (bad graphics chips), so I was given a new MBP.  They nicely kept the old machine and transferred the HD info over to the new one.
    However, they did not transfer any of the boot camp/windows/parallels stuff.  I had a $5500 CAD program in there. and lots of files.
    Fortunately, I have been doing bootable backups using SuperDuper, so I have an external HD with all the stuff on it.  The backup is several weeks old, however, and I don't want to erase the new stuff.
    My question is how can I transfer the boot camp partition intact from the external drive to the internal drive?

    It seems to me probable that on your original HD you must have had a Bootcamp Partition, and that you had Parallels installed and set up to use the Bootcamp partition. Apple did not move your Bootcamp to your new HD so it does not have a Bootcamp partition at all, so when you launch Parallels it can't find an operating system. Unfortunately, as CSound1 says, SuperDuper does not backup Bootcamp partitions so your external HD will not have a backup of your Bootcamp on it. Bootcamp partitions need a completely separate method (Winclone is the best) to back up or transfer to a new HD.
    Unless you backed up the Bootcamp Partition some other way, I am afraid you have probably lost everything Windows.
    The only remote possibility is that you did actually have a separate Parallels installation which was not using the Bootcamp partition. If this is the case the Parallels Virtual Machine will be on your new hard drive and will be a substantial size compared to one which is simply pointing to a Bootcamp Partition. Parallels VMs are usually installed in username/Documents/Parallels/ but could be somewhere else in your user directory.
    If you recover from this situation have a look at Winclone as the best way to backup your Bootcamp Windows partition. Personally I gave up on Bootcamp a few years ago because of the problems of backing up restoring Bootcamp partitions, but that was before Winclone was as good as it is now. A pure Parallels set up is much easier to manage and is fully backed up by Superduper. Parallels is much faster than most Bootcamp devotees realise, and plenty adequate for all except extreme gaming (IMHO).
    Another thing to think about in the future is to establish a discipline of testing your backups from time to time.

  • I guess I didn't explaine that I have a healthy operating Windows 8 Boot camp partition on my hard drive. When I upgraded to Mavericks I am no long able to access the bootcamp partition from the disk icon in system preferences; the Windows 8 works fine.

    On both Mini Mac and iMac 27" I am no longer able to utalize the Startup Disk icon in System Preferences; the Windows 8 on Bootcamp partition works fine if I close the Mavericks OX and select the Windows partition at bootup from the hard drive. My question is why don't the icon in System Prederences work anymore since I upgraded to Mavericks. Also, Users & Groups, Printers & Scanners icons no longer work either.

  • Windows will not boot to my boot camp partition on a DIY fusion drive - gives "No bootable device found" error

    I have a MacBookPro 9,1 (mid-2012, non-retina) running OS X 10.8.2.  Here is what I have done to my system:
    Installed Windows 7 x64 Pro to a boot camp partition; installed all windows updates.
    Using WinClone, save an image of this boot camp partition.
    Removed optical drive and HDD.
    Installed HDD in place of optical drive.
    Installed SSD in place of HDD.
    Booted to recovery partition, installed OS X on a flash drive.
    Booted to flash drive, created fusion drive using [MacWorld's instructions](http://www.macworld.com/article/2014011/how-to-make-your-own-fusion-drive.html)
    Booted to recovery partition on flash drive.
    Restored system to fusion drive from a Time Machine backup. Unfortunately, it seems that because I never installed OS X on my fusion drive, I do not have a recovery partition. But that's an issue for another day.
    Using Boot Camp assistant, created a boot camp partition on my HDD.
    Using WinClone, restore my Windows installation from the previously created image.
    Now, Windows boots to a black screen telling me that it can't find a bootable device. I have tried a few things to resolve this, all without effect:
    I know that VMware Fusion has to prepare a boot camp partition in order to virtualize it, so I figured it might inadvertently fix things. Alas, while it *did* successfully boot my boot camp partition into a virtual machine, I still can't boot into Windows.
    I figured I'd just try to reinstall Windows. Surprisingly, my system booted to my Windows install disc, which was in my original optical drive (which I had put in a USB case). But, Windows refused to install, giving me a an error 0x8030024. It seems the solution to this issue is to disconnect all drives but the one on which you want to install Windows, which is something I would dearly like to avoid. It would be a pain, but more than that, I'm afraid it would bork my fusion drive, even if I'm careful to never boot to OS X with the SSD disconnected.
    A lot of places said that this error results from a borked MBR, and suggest using a tool like gptfdisk to rewrite it. I followed the instructions [here](https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4144252?start=0&tstart=0), but *that* didn't work either.
    I am now completely at a loss as to how to proceed, and Google isn't much help either.

    My setup is very similar to your's, Ryan, on a Mac Mini5,2 and the ordering is different and Winclone was not used.
    1. New Mini with internal 500GB with Mountain Lion(ML), put into an external FW enclosure, so the Mini can/could be booted using an external drive for contigency.
    2. Replaced internal stock HDD (500Gb/5400rpm) with SSD/HDD (256Gb SSD/1TB 5400rpm).
    3. Installed W7 x64 on 64GB partition on HDD, which was a single-partition drive to begin with.
    4. The remaining HDD partition and the entire SSD was put into a Fusion drive.
    5. Using Command-R, new ML installed on Fusion HD.

  • Boot Camp partition added to VMWare Fusion...can't see original partition

    I originally installed Windows XP Pro using Boot Camp. The partition was available using the OPTION-startup to select that partition.
    Then I installed VMWare Fusion and had it "use" that Boot Camp partition so I could access it while running Leopard. Now when I use the OPTION-startup I don't see the original Boot Camp partition.
    I check the information on my internal hard drive and it shows a total of 290Gb available when the hard drive is actually 320Gb (30Gb for the Boot Camp partition).
    I'm wondering my options:
    A. Can I use a Windows XP disc to install another Boot Camp partition or will it deny me because there is one still detectable?
    B. Can I restore the ability to see the apparent Boot Camp partition on the hard drive from the OPTION-startup screen?
    C. Is the simplest solution to reinstall Leopard and then reinstall the Boot Camp partition?

    UPDATE: So I tried to reinstall Windows XP using the Boot Camp Assistant but after choosing to create a new 32 Gig partition, the Utility failed, said it could not be created and suggested I try running repairs on the disc using the Disk Utility.
    After running the repair disk feature in the Disk Utility here's the results:

  • Will migration assistant migrate a boot camp partition?

    I am considering replacing my wife's IMac core2duo with a new IMac.  Will the current Migration Assistant transfer the full operable boot camp partition to the hard drive of the new computer?  If not, what is the easiest way to do this?  I do use Carbon Copy Cloner as a back up, in addition to Time Machine.  Thank  you.

    No it don't migrate the BootCamp partition! You can save the partition with WinClone to save and restore the windows partition.

  • Will reinstall of OSX wipe out existing Boot Camp partition?

    After a trial install of Parallels corrupted my XP side I have had to reinstall XP on a new boot camp partition, (seen as C: drive).
    But soon after that I noticed a few apps not working properly or not at all in the OSX side.
    I've tried to start up from the Tech Tool disk by holding the C key but it will not do it. It always just starts normally at the sign in prompt rather than running from the disk. I used the Disk Tools app. on the OSX installer disk to Repair Disk Permissions that seem to be needed. It then verifies the corrections are completed, but show back up again in repeat tests. I've concluded that I probably need to just do a fresh install of Osx but does that mean it wipes out the XP side as well?
    All this reinstalling takes a ton of time that I need to be doing my job instead.

    I installed Leopard over Tiger on two machines (normal upgrade not A&I) and on both machines the XP and Vista sides were still working just as before.
    If you system is clean, there is no reason for an install of one to affect the other. Bootcamp is over and done with, once it creates the partition. At that point you have a dual-boot system and the partition wall will prevent one from OS from changing the other.
    I have not even run BC2.0. My partitions were created with BC1.3 which I updated to 1.4 before installing Leopard.

    it seems that in order to get Windows7 on to my old non supported MacPro 1.1 that I need to firist install onto this mid 2009 MacBook Pro I want to do the install onto an external firwire800 hard drive which I have formater and Downloaded and installed the Windows support folder using the boot camp installer but the installer wants to grab 20 gig of my internal drive for the win 7 install what is the minimun that I must have on the internal drive to install and use win 7 on the external drive?
    is ther annother way to get Win7 onto my MacPro1.1 where it can live on an internal drive of its own. I do not have have it running on this MBP5.3 other than to get it running (64 mode) on the old tower In addition to the MBP I have at hand the esternal drive a blank 16 gig thumb drive and a firewire800 external DVD drive that I use mostly as a burner on the macpro as it is faster than the internal superdrive that it came with

    I assume that is a product so then I can remove the bootcamp partition from my internal drive and boot to the firewire 800 drive or do I need to have a SSD drive inside the macbookpro first?

    Ouch, well there is a problem.
    This is the stack of partitions on your old drive

    EFI has to be at the top of the drive and Lion Recovery has to be at the bottom of the drive.
    And you only have four partitions.
    You can't move the Lion Recovery Partition or Bootcamp partiton, however you can expand the Lion Partition into empty space below it. (but can't delete or move the Lion Recovery partition)
    Your Duplicator duplicated perfectly, too perfectly Likely would work with same sized drives/partitions.
    This is what your going to need to do.
    You need to move the Bootcamp partition to a blank external drive using WinClone and disconnect. This is so you have two backups of it. (one on your old 500GB drive)
    You will need a drive enclousre or IDE/SATA to USB adapter cable for the older 500GB drive and option key boot from it. (some enclosures can't be booted from so check first Other World Computing is good place to ask)
    Download the free Carbon Copy Cloner, grab any new files off the new 750GB internal drive to the old 500GB your booted from.
    Open Apple's Disk Utility and Erase with Zero option the entire internal 750GB drive and let it rip, this will map off as many bad sectors and improve reliability.
    Now use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the 500GB Lion + Lion Recovery Partitions to the internal 750GB, it will "fix" things and place Lion Recovery at the bottom of the drive where it belongs, give all the extra space to OS X Lion.
    Next your going to have to follow WinClones instructions to restore your Bootcamp, likely you will have to recreate the Bootcamp partition first (in Bootcamp) to the size you want and then clone. Likely Winclone may "fix" Windows to recognize it's in a new larger partition now. I don't know you'll have to check as I haven't used it.
    When Bootcamp creates the partition it will place it near the bottom next to the Lion Recovery Partition.
    As you know you will have to re-validate Windows with Lord Redmond or it expires as you changed the hardware.

  • How do I write to my boot camp partition with Paragon NTFS that comes with Mountain Lion?  Or how do I get my boot camp partition to show up in Paragon's "Available NTFS partitions:" panel like my external hard drive does?

    I've just set up boot camp on my MacBookPro with a freshly installed Mountain Lion and Windows 7. 
    I would like to read and write in both directions from drive to drive if possible.  I've hunted around quite a bit to try and work this out, and so far I understand that one can write to or transfer files from one drive to the other with Paragon NTFS among other softwares. 
    I noticed when I looked in my system preferences the utility "Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X" came with Mountain Lion and it will recognize an external hard drive when I have one plugged in under "Available NTFS partitions:".  However, it does not automatically recognize my NTFS boot camp partition nor does it automatically give me write access. 
    Is the Paragon NTFS that comes with Mountain Lion limited in some way? 
    Do I still need to purchase and download the software of the same name from Paragon to get the full write privilidges I want or is there something I can do to get the version of Paragon on my MAC to recognize and give me write priviledges to my boot camp partition?
    I'm open to all suggestions to get the read / write access between partitions in my boot camped drive.
    MacFUSE is also listed in the System Preferences of my machine (it also came with Mountain Lion), if that helps.  I'm still working out exactly what each of these is supposed to do and how I can use it to accomplish the task at hand.
    My boot camp drive does appear normally in other contexts and in disk utility it indicates that the drive is mounted.

    Interesting. Comes with? you didn't have either before? Paragon is commercial and is now v. 10.0, they were the only one keeping updated and was supporting 10.7.4. I would not enable more than one.
    For writing to HFS Paragon has theirs but probably give the nod to MacDrive there.
    I never do an upgrade to a new OS over the old system, I backup (clone) and format the drive with the new OS and do the install so whatever is there I know is clean and also to keep from carrying around leftovers from years and systems past.
    I would assme Paragon is limited. Try their site and knowledge base?

  • How do install windows hard drive (from dead pc) into boot camp partition

    My Windows 7 desktop died recently, so I took the opportunity to buy a Mac Mini (latest version as of Feb 2012) as a replacement.  I want to transfer  the Windows 7 installation (from the dead PC) including all applications, accounts, settings, user files, etc to the Boot Camp Partition.   Can someone please provide the steps on how to perform the Win 7 migration to the Mac Mini. 

    Just to clarify:
    I want to install the Windows 7 installation from dead the PC into the Mac Mini's Boot Camp partition.
    I installed the PC's hard drive into an enclosure and connected it to the Mac Mini via the USB port.
    What I want to do is the following:
    1) Do a Windows 7 "fresh" install in the Mac Mini Boot Camp partition.
    2) Migrate all the applications installed on the  Windows 7 PC and their associated data.
    3) Migrate all user accounts and data.
    Is there a tool that can transfer all applications and user accounts from the Windows 7 Hard Drive to the Boot Camp partition on the Mini?
    Based on the documentation the Window Migration tool is Lion OS utility and does not perform a complete migration of all applications installed on the Windows machine.

  • Boot Camp partition data disappeared - No DVD drive

    Up until today my Boot Camp partition was working swimmingly.
    Today, I was greeted with the "bootmgr not found" error. After restarting into OSX, none of my files on the drive show up (I have Paragon NTFS) pictured below:
    It looks like the data is still there, but something in the partition tables/mbr is messed up. If possible, I'd like to salvage the existing data.
    To complicate things, I don't have a DVD drive on my MBP. Also, apparently I cannot boot from windows USB keys.
    This makes the usual windows boot repair difficult.
    My attempted solution, which worked to get windows installed in the first place was to make a new partition, and copy Windows install files to it, but I can't seem to get that to boot, either. I tried using Boot Camp Assistant to prepare the files, as well as unetbootin. I also tried formatting as both HFS and Fat, and copying the files from the windows install disk. I also installed rEFIt, but I just get errors when attempting to boot the install partition.
    My last ditch attempt was to rig something through VMware fusion to repair the drive by mounting it as a raw disk, 
    and loading my Windows 7 ISO to perform the repair, but raw disks don't seem to work well with partitions, and I didn't want to nuke all of my data.
    Does anyone have suggestions as to how I might fix this drive, to at least grab some files off of it?
    Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

    To clarify, in Bootcamp the " This disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved" error is relating to my OSX boot drive - 128Gb SSD. It currently has ~30gb free. Is there a way I can clone this data, and restore it without a DVD drive, or some other bootable media?
    Not being able to create a second partition is on my second drive, 320Gb. Which has 64Gb free. Searching around the net, I saw that resizing a partition to it's smallest possible size is the easiest way to defrag free space in OSX. I did that, and the option to create a second windows partition is still greyed out.
    Even if I nuke the existing bootcamp partition, I need another working, bootable partition that I can boot the Win 7 disc from. Not sure what's changed since my initial install, but it seems even more difficult this time.
    I'll try using carbon copy cloner on my system partition, and test if it's bootable from USB. I'm running out of Ideas.

  • Does anyone know what the partitions look like after installing boot camp on a 3T fusion drive

    I installed a boot camp partition on a 3T fusion drive.  Running disk utility afterward it looks like this.
    Is this what it should look like?  I understand about the need for bootcamp to create 2 physical drives in core storage in order to install boot camp on a 3T fusion drive but should I see both drives after it is done?
