Boot Camp Partition too small

I created a boot camp partition for Windows 7 a few months ago, but I didn't make it big enough. Now I'm getting a "not enough space" message when I try to update to boot camp 3.2. I seem to remember that if I need to resize, I need to reinstall boot camp again - is that right, because I can't find where I read that?
I have a 2010 Macbook pro, 2.66 gHz, and my 32-bit windows partition was installed as 18 gb. I didn't think about having to run other software, like itunes, when I created the partition.
I've not been able to change the trackpad such that I can tap rather than click (VERY difficult for me to work with), and I was hoping boot camp 3.2 might fix that.
Any advice on all this would be gratefully received.

Hatter, I always search for solutions before I ask - I come to forums as a last resort when I'm not confident about proceeding without some advice. If you don't like the questions I ask, you don't have to get involved and answer. I didn't ask anything about doing backups - I backup my data regularly to an external drive. I asked what "backup system image" meant because I hadn't heard that expression before and I thought it might have been something critical I needed to know before I reinstalled my partition.
Before I moved over to Mac, I spent 9 years learning how to maintain my own pc, so I've got some idea of what I'm doing. But there are always things to learn, and I'm grateful to those who are willing to share their knowledge - I've used what I've learned to help those of my friends who are real novices, and at times I've even contributed to forums.
Since I only use my Windows partition for music, I think it'll be simple enough for me to just recreate. The 15-20 percent rule sounds like a good one, Toocool4, and I wish I'd thought of it before! This time I'll build a partition factoring in the size of software, like itunes, as well, and I'll make it big enough to cover everything!
If I've misunderstood the image-creating ideas, please set me straight; otherwise I'll assume just going thru the bootcamp instructions will serve me well again.
And BTW, I'm a GIRL, not a guy.

Boot Camp Partition shows up Smaller in Windows 7 Setup

I just installed a new Seagate 1TB hybrid drive (STBD1000400) in my mid-2009 15" MacBook Pro 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo, 8 GB of RAM, with OS X 10.9.2 and Boot Camp (and all other Software up to date). Everything went fine with the installation of the new Drive and is showing up as 1TB in the system in OS X.
When I go to setup my partition in Boot Camp I set it so OSX has 600GB and Boot Camp has 400GB. After it completes the partition it automatically goes into installing Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium. But when I go to pick which partition to install it on, the 400GB Boot Camp partition I created only shows up as 372GB, not 400GB. And I can see my 600GB partition in the list only showing up around 540GB. After the Windows 7 install it still shows the drive as 372GB.
After the install and started back up in OS X and I checked the drive and it shows them correctly as 600GB and 400GB. So restarted back in Windows 7 and it still shows the Boot Camp partition as 372GB instead of 400. I even went into Disk Management and it doesn't show any unpartitioned drive space available either.
So I started back up in OS X and deleted the Boot Camp partition and started over trying to go with the 600 and 400GB partitions, but it still shows the 400GB partition as only 372GB again during the Windows 7 setup.
Anyone know what can be causing Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium to not recognize the full 400GB partition?
Anyone ever come across a similar problem?

Capacity of the drive or size of the volume. In windows 7 it says 931.32GB. Rebooting into Mavericks, DU shows the volume as
1,000,204,886,016 Bytes
So....at least one of them must be wrong I would consider Windows 7 using some 1024 based number and the mac showing raw bytes. I bet all your space is accounted for.

Copying a disk which has a boot camp partition

Colleague has an iMac with a boot camp partition, and the disk has failed. It won't boot off the mac partition, although the windows partition works fine. He bought a new 1T disk and we are trying to copy his disk on to it, and will then install the new disk into the iMac.
So it's booted up using the SnowLeopard install disk and I am running disk utility. First I tried to partition the disk into something that looks like the partition scheme on the current disk -- big partition for os x, little partition for windows, although big & little are 750GB vs 250GB as opposed to the smaller version on the 260GB original.
Then I tried to use the Restore to go from the old bootcamp partition to the new MS-DOS (fat) partition on the new drive. This failed. First it resized the fat partition down to an ever-so-slightly smaller partition than the NTFS original, and then generated an error because the partition is too small.
How do we do this?

Well moving the new disk in to the iMac is one of the tasks we need to accomplish, so we can do it now. My plan was to use dd to move the data from the partition on the old drive to the partition on the new drive, once we can get Boot Camp Assistant to create it. Winclone looks like a great product, but it's $29. Parallels is only $79, and if a disk fails or you migrate to new hardware all of the Parallels vms come over effortlessly using Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant.

This is the stack of partitions on your old drive

EFI has to be at the top of the drive and Lion Recovery has to be at the bottom of the drive.
And you only have four partitions.
You can't move the Lion Recovery Partition or Bootcamp partiton, however you can expand the Lion Partition into empty space below it. (but can't delete or move the Lion Recovery partition)
Your Duplicator duplicated perfectly, too perfectly Likely would work with same sized drives/partitions.
This is what your going to need to do.
You need to move the Bootcamp partition to a blank external drive using WinClone and disconnect. This is so you have two backups of it. (one on your old 500GB drive)
You will need a drive enclousre or IDE/SATA to USB adapter cable for the older 500GB drive and option key boot from it. (some enclosures can't be booted from so check first Other World Computing is good place to ask)
Download the free Carbon Copy Cloner, grab any new files off the new 750GB internal drive to the old 500GB your booted from.
Open Apple's Disk Utility and Erase with Zero option the entire internal 750GB drive and let it rip, this will map off as many bad sectors and improve reliability.
Now use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the 500GB Lion + Lion Recovery Partitions to the internal 750GB, it will "fix" things and place Lion Recovery at the bottom of the drive where it belongs, give all the extra space to OS X Lion.
Next your going to have to follow WinClones instructions to restore your Bootcamp, likely you will have to recreate the Bootcamp partition first (in Bootcamp) to the size you want and then clone. Likely Winclone may "fix" Windows to recognize it's in a new larger partition now. I don't know you'll have to check as I haven't used it.
When Bootcamp creates the partition it will place it near the bottom next to the Lion Recovery Partition.
As you know you will have to re-validate Windows with Lord Redmond or it expires as you changed the hardware.

How to adjust Boot Camp partition for more Mac space?

When I setup Boot Camp, I intended to stay in Windows. I’ve now migrated to Mac and want more disc space allocated to it. How can I adjust this in Boot Camp without deleting and reinstalling Windows?
Extended Version:
I have had a 21.5” iMac for right at a year now, and have been running Windows 95% of the time prior to last week. I decided that I was spending more time on the Mac partition and deciding that it was better in my eyes than Windows, and decided to install all of my productivity software (Microsoft Office/Adobe Creative Suite) on it in an effort to wean myself off of Windows.
Unfortunately, when I set the computer up, I did a 90/10 partition install of Windows on Boot Camp, with 90% of the disc space being allocated to Windows. Obviously, this will no longer work for me, and working from my files in the Boot Camp partition is both limited, and irritating. I would like to adjust the partition the other way; probably an 85/15 partition with the 85% being Mac OSX and the remainder being Windows. Because Mac OSX is the boot disc, it appears as though it can be made smaller, but not larger in Boot Camp.
1. Is there a way to adjust the partition size without having to delete the Windows partition and reinstall?
2. Is the Airport Time Capsule a suitable device to temporarily dump my data on while I adjust the partition? I’ve got 99% of my data on a separate external HDD from a data backup a month ago, but would rather not have to make another backup.

Time Machine cannot backup Windows. It will only back up OS - Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.

Windows 8 installer doesn't want to format the boot camp partition

All works but the installer doesn't want to format the boot camp partition, i click on "option" > "format", i wait like 3-4 seconds (so not enought to format 100Go) and then same error "Windows can't be installed on this partition".
Any idea ?

1 USB KEY that i used to install osx lion, so i think it's not the problem.

I have the same issue. Dec. 2013 13" macbook pro with 1tb ssd. Windows 8 Pro (have the box/cd).
Why is it that I can find every computer problem I ever have in a thread somewhere where someone else had the same problem too....but the threads never have solutions. There should be a name for this phenomenon.

BSOD every 20 minutes running windows XP in boot camp partition

Has anyone else had this problem? Everything was running fine for a couple of months on my new mac OS X until around the time I installed the recommended updater to Boot Camp 2.1, then Windows XP started crashing every 20 minutes exactly, BCCode : 1000007f. One line of discussion suggests it's a boot camp problem but uninstalling the update hasn't helped. Others seemed to think it might be a graphics card incompatibility. I've now been advised that it's a Norton 2008 problem and I should uninstall that although I haven't tried yet. But the every 20 minutes must be some clue to what's going on. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks Axel. I removed Norton 2008 with the uninstall tool and hey presto no more BSODs so far (24 hours). I've also replaced Norton with Kaspersky. I guess this is really a Norton/Boot Camp compatibility problem but it's weird that Norton ran without problems on my system for five months until I installed the Boot Camp 2.1 updater. Having said that, I now see that there are a couple of discussions on this in the Boot Camp > Installation and Storage topic list ...
In one of these, Mark Davidson3 resolved the problem by completely uninstalling/reinstalling his Boot Camp partition and is now running Norton again with no problem but I wonder if that's because he must have uninstalled/reinstalled Norton in the process. Like me, the crashes had started for him only after he installed the Boot Camp 2.1 updater. Presumably Norton would run again on my system now too if I reinstalled it.
Has anyone out there talked to the Norton/Boot Camp people about this?

OS X Yosemite (10.10.3) Boot Camp Partition Issue

I just updated the system to OS X 10.10.3 with the OS X Yosemite Recovery Update too. My boot camp partition went missing!!! I checked Disk Utility to see what is happening, the reply is "Repair the disk", when i click on Repair, it say the disk cannot not be repaired and needs to be reformat. Any one know what is happening?

Boot Camp Partition and OS X Cloning Apps?

I've tried a search of previous posts and can't get a bulletproof answer. Here goes:
Using XP SP3 in a Boot Camp partition on my iMac running Snow Leopard. Only one complaint (the metal keyboard Option key issue for boot up -- really lame).
The Windows partition is for two financial applications, mission critical ones. I copy the key data files over to my Mac side after using these Windows apps.
I back up my Mac side with SuperDuper! My mission critical files are thus picked up by my SuperDuper! routine. I've tried restoring them and it works without a hitch.
My question is: if my system HD goes south, will my SuperDuper! clone restore the previous partition structure on the new system HD? Also, I've always assumed I'd have to reinstall the Windows apps individually and replace the mission critical data files one by one in a separate process. Is this right?
I also keep Time Machine backups running. They pick up those mission critical copies brought over to my Mac side. Same questions re: a replacement system HD -- will the partition structure be restored, and am I right in understanding the apps and files on the Windows side are up to me to restore outside any Time Machine rescue.

Hi Terry,
your assumption is correct.
Neither SuperDuper nor Time Machine will clone or backup your Windows partition since both only handle harddisk/partitions that use the MacOS Extended file system.
Files that are on such harddisks/partitions are cloned/backuped regardless of their nature or origin.
So of you copy files from your WIndows partition to your OSX partition like your mission critical files, these are then cloned/backuped when using SuperDuper or Time Machine.
And yes, when booting from your external harddisk with the cloned OSX and then using SuperDuper to clone this OSX back to your internal harddisk all the files (and therefor also your mission critical files) are back "in place".
Same goes for when using a Time Machine backup for a full system restore.
After that you would have to reinstall Windows and the Windows programs to get it all back.
Currently Casper http://www.fssdev.com/products/casper/ is considered the best solution for a full Windows backup/restore.
Mike Bombich, the author of Carbon Copy Cloner (another cloning app for OSX) is to my knowledge working on an addition to CCC to clone or backup a BootCamp Windows.
But it's way too early to see any results on this.

Recover Deleted Boot Camp Partition

A week ago I tried to delete Ubuntu from my Windows 8 Boot Camp partition on my MacBook. However, after the process I couldn't boot Mavericks anymore. When I finally got Mavericks to boot, my Windows partition became unbootable. After running the repair disk, I accidentally ran the "clean" command using Diskpart and COMPLETELY wiped my computer of everything - even my Mac OS X partition. The only way I could get my computer to become usable again was to add a partition using the Internet Recovery Disk Utility tools (there were 0 partitions) and fresh-install Lion.
However, I had all of my important files and apps on my Windows partition and my last backup of it (using Winclone) was outdated. I am not very familiar with this sort of situation, so I was hoping for some help. Currently, I have not attempted to add another Boot Camp partition, but I'm not sure if adding the Lion partition (to make my Mac usable) would make the Windows partition unrecoverable. Also, should I update to Mavericks and then take further action?
I would sincerely appreciate it if I could receive some assistance.

I've found the NTFS partition with the right size capacity, 136 GB. However, when I press "p" to list files, the only directory folders that show up are .Trashes and System Volume Information. The partition also appears to be resized (it may have accidentally happened?) because its size is shown as 146 GB/136 GB.
How would I restore the NTFS partition so that I could fix it with a utility (because I think it's been accidentally resized)? As I'd said above, I deleted my Mac partition too and I had to install a new Lion partition. However, this new Lion partition takes up all of the partition space because there is currently only one, so would I have to re-partition it before I can restore the Windows partition?

Possible to RAID 0 and run Boot Camp partition?

I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro (13"). I have a stock 250 GB hard drive and I just got a SanDisk 256 GB SSD.
I'm running Windows (through Boot Camp) on a small partition of my stock 250 GB hard drive. I want to install the SSD in my optical drive and RAID the two hard drives (250 GB and 256 GB). I also want to wipe my Windows partition and make it bigger (around 50-100 GB).
My question is: is it possible to RAID 0 and have a Windows parition at the same time? What's the best way to do it if it's possible?

If you are planning on setting them up in a Raid Array, it doesn't really matter. The performance is going to be poor no matter what. I see your plan as spending money for little or no gain.
Have you considered just removing the current disk drive and replacing it with a larger one. I think that would give you the best performance for the least money and the fewest headaches getting it set up.
Your need for Windows is preventing me from making any other suggestions. Windows has so many lkimitations built into it.

Boot Camp partition not bootable after update

After an OSX update I lost my Boot Camp partition. Reading you replies here on the forum, i was able to save my important files through testdisk, for what i'm really thankful! Following your instructions in this thread (Bootcamp disk0s4 gone after Yosemite update) the bootcamp partition finally appeared in finder and disk utility.
But sudo gdisk /dev/disk0 returns with this:

Boot camp partition disappeared

Hello out there,
until the last hour I had a working system with a Mac OS X and Boot Camp partition.
After a reinstall of "Missing Sync for Windows Mobile" the Boot Camp partition icon has disappeared and is no longer shown in the start volume preference pane.
But it is still there, because I can select it during boot up, pressing the option key. And it is working fine...
Can someone tell me how to get my Boot Camp partition back into Mac OS X?

PS: May be the wrong discussion, but does somebody know if there are incopatibilities between MacOS X 10.5.7 and Missing Sync for "Windows Mobile"?

Thanks for the reference. You saved my sanity, or what's left of it. In my desperation, I even started getting to know my partition tables on a first-name basis - a sure sign of madness.
My variation on the problem was that after a disk crash, I restored my system from Time Machine. I didn't quite realize that TM does not restore system extensions, like MacFUSE; it does, however, restore the MacFUSE plug-ins, like NTFS-3G. So NTFS-3G was claiming to handle the Windows partition, but actually wasn't. Based on your post, I tried disabling NTFS-3G from the System Preferences; that's when it told me that MacFUSE was not installed. Duh.

P.S. I use Missing Sync for Windows Mobile, too, and it works fine on 10.5.7 - or as well as it ever did on previous versions.

How-To Delete Boot Camp Partition with Parallels Configure to Access It

Hi Everyone,
I would like to delete my boot camp partition from my MB to reclaim some space due to the increasing storage demand from iTunes library? (I need to find out what can I do when the library is getting larger than my HD too, but that's another topic...)
I also have Parellels Desktop configure to access the boot camp partition instead of creating its own virtual hard drive. I'd like to know if there's any problem with my parallels after I delete the boot camp hard drive? Will I have to reinstall my Windows XP OS again after deleting the partition?

Are you saying that I have to reinstall my Windows XP OS all over again, with the patch and everything after deleting the BC partition? Is there a way to create a virtual hard drive from the BC partition of what I have? It's such a time-consuming process that I have to tweak the OS to the way I'd like it.
I wonder what solution will Apple offer when they offer more and more content, and space for each computer is limited. I did some research on this issue and it turns out that the solution is the set the option in iTunes to "Manually manage my music files" in the Preferences panel. I don't want to do this because if I set this option, my files won't be organized any more, and it's gonna be all over the places. But I guess I have to do this until Apple offer an option such as "Move my Podcasts file to _ external hard drive" to keep everything stay organized.

Ever transfer a Boot camp partition from one Mac to another?

My iMac has a working Windows 7 running on Boot Camp partition. I want to move it -- system and all, every last bit -- to my MacBook Pro. I installed Win 7 on the MacBook Pro and Windows said it would not authorize the system cause I installed it too many times. I'll have to move my copy of Mac Office 2010 also.
1) Is this possible?
2) Will it accept the copied files as an authorized copy of Windows 7?
Any suggestions, other than buying a new license?

You can use an imaging program like Ghost or Truimage. Windows will prompt for reactivation if it detects "too many changed devices." A different CPU and network card or motherboard chipset will usually be enough. Basically different motherboard means reactivation so more than likely both Windows and MSOffice will need reactivation since your MBP is a different motherboard than the iMac.
However, back to the activation thing. I'm assuming you're just trying the automated internet activation. If you've not been abusive and this is a legitimate reinstall, (i.e.: this is just the 2nd time reinstalling in the past year or two,) then just call Microsoft using the phone number you see when the reactivation fails. If they ask, tell them you bought a new computer or had to replace a hard drive. They will then give you the reactivation key to type in. I've done this with reinstalling various versions of Windows and MSOffice and calling Microsoft has always worked, of course taking a little longer to deal with the person on the phone versus clicking the mouse. Again, this assumes this is a legitimate "move" and you've not been reactivating every couple of weeks, which would look suspicious. I've never called in a "suspicious" instance so I don't know how Microsoft will deal with that. But otherwise it's relatively painless.
